Once inside I took a quick look at all the tools available for rent (lawn mowers, sanders, paint supplies, even a kitchen aid mixer) and I quickly made a trek to the back of the library to the seed collection. The tool library is providing free seeds for gardening and the selection is enormous. I grabbed several tomato varieties, peppers, herbs, and a handful of wildflowers. Everything is free but there is a suggested limit of 10 packets per person. I'm excited to start gardening and very grateful for this program!

I just happened to be there as the owner was subbing for a cashier, and as we were talking, it was so apparent that they love what they do - their energy and enthusiasm for serving Chicago exuded from them and made me excited to be there too. Since most people don't have the space or money to afford their own tools and equipment everytime they need something done, this is an essential resource in any city, and one that I frequent. You can go in person to pick out what you want, but I would suggest going online first the reserve what you need. Once all your items are available, you get an email notification, and you can just go out and pick your items up. You also get a week to return everything, but if you have circumstances that would prevent this, you can let them know and they are more than happy to accommodate an extension. Definitely check this place out next time you have a project you need equipment for!

The slogans and jingles are memorable, and all is good and fine until you need to visit one. Let me guess, it goes something like this: You walk in looking for an item and an associate who can help you. You see someone in paint, but know they can't leave their post, so you continue looking. Aha! A person! Oh wait, that's a cardboard cutout. (This actually happened to me recently at a big box.) Finally, you find someone, and they tell you where to find the item in question. Only, the entire endeavor took way too long, meanwhile, the house is a mess while you're gallivanting the aisles. Enter Clark Devon Hardware. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted and offered assistance. Even if you are just browsing, others will ask you along the way. If you do ask for help, you will either be taken to the item or shown to a person who can help (as in, 'ask this person right over here,' who sees and waves). The team at Clark Devon is knowledgeable, kind, and no nonsense. They know you have things to do and places to be. They will be happy to help you and send you on your merry way. Clark Devon may not be the prettiest hardware store, and perhaps the big boxes may even have slightly cheaper prices (this is unconfirmed). However, it is my go-to for all hardware and home improvement needs, not only out of a desire to support a locally owned business, but because customer service counts for something too. If I am to offer one smidgen of feedback, it's that I wish they were open until later in the evening. For sometimes you come back from work and discover the closet rod has snapped in two, and you need parts to replace and fix.

Because they've been around long enough to make enough scratch to afford those things. Sadly enough, I haven't been able to accrue the expensive tools, fast cars, and large waist line because of my relatively young age. Oft, I am left to complete side jobs, and projects on my home with out the aid of the best tools money can buy. Wirtz has come through in spades for me on several occasions when this occurs. Scaffolding, concrete cutters, portable generators they have and for a decent price. Recently I had a small side job repairing a damaged fire escape. Unfortunately my trusty Miller CST 280 machine couldn't make the trip. So i rented a portable generator welder from Wirtz. Not bad $80 per day, the only problem I encountered was the stinger on the lead was badly damaged and every once in a while I would get a nice shock, or a bright light show if I set down on the base metal. I told 'em about it and am sure they took care of it. Nice place with decent tool rentals, and courteous desk staff as well Some day I will have that nice portable generator welder, and that nice Porsche 911, and probably a much larger waist line as well, but none of that will be a reality if I don't make some money in the mean time, and when I have need for a special tool, scaffold, etc. Wirtz will be there to help put money in my pocket.
