We've been loyal customers of Wise Pies for over 7 years -- maybe closer to 10 -- and it's tough to leave this review. Unfortunately, our most recent visit was really disappointing. The pizza just didn't have the same quality it used to and the breadsticks were very rubbery. Service was fine, but what stood out -- in a bad way -- was an employee sleeping on the floor in the doorway, within 15 feet of our table. At first, we weren't sure who they were or what was going on, which made it hard to relax or enjoy our meal. Eventually they got up, checked their phone, and went back to the kitchen, which raised even more concerns. We've had so many great visits here over the years, so this one really stood out. I stumbled upon this place today because I saw signs as we were heading to the 6th St Arts Festival. I am SO GLAD I tried it. NY Style pizza is my absolute favorite and I saw that they served slices, so obviously, it was meant to be. I tried a slice of their WOW and it was absolute perfection! Thin crust and a little crispy on the bottom. Their flavors and ingredients were phenomenal!! Easily THE BEST PIZZA I've had in Indiana or Virginia (my two homes as of late)!!! I was in town for work and admittedly the name caught my eye so I decided to order a 14 inch pie. I ordered the supreme with no mushrooms. Upon receiving my pie, I opened it and thought to myself that this may have been a bad idea. Honestly, it looked a little bland. Boy was I shocked when I took a bite of the first slice and found that it was some of the most flavorful pizza I've ever had. Loved the crust. It's not cracker thin, but it is a thinner crust which allows you to enjoy the flavors on top of the crust. It's a quaint little spot with friendly employees. This was a great experience! We started out with pizza by the slice - mine was pepperoni and hubby had the barbecue chicken. They were generous slices, the crust was excellent and they weren't stingy with the toppings. Service was great and it gave a good family vibe. Our mistake was then we ordered a Calzone to share. Holy-Moley!! We had never had one before and half of it easily fed both of us and I ended up taking the other half over to my daughter's. Ricotta cheese, Italian sausage and black olives. While I would have to give a slight nod to Maurizio's in terms of the Terre Haute pizza crown, the truth is every time I think about knocking the Wise Pies score down to 3-stars something holds me back. Located in downtown Terre Haute near the Indiana State University campus and not too far from both the Hilton Garden Inn and the Candlewood Suites, Wise Pies Pizza and Subs has two Terre Haute locations and is a solid choice for anyone wanting a slice or a pie of New York-style pizza (or at least New York-style pizza as made in Indiana). I wasn't in the mood for much when I stopped by Wise Pies after a visit to the Terre Haute Children's Museum and a brief detour to my nearby hotel room. I was wheeling around downtown getting used to a newer wheelchair that I would be using for a long distance event and remembered the sign for Wise Pies that said it sold pizza by the slice. I ordered a combo option they have that includes a slice, in my case sausage, along with a couple of breadsticks. I also ordered an unsweetened iced tea. The modest meal came in at less than your usual mall slice combo at a bit under eight bucks. The entrance to Wise Pies isn't particularly wheelchair friendly - this is mostly because it's an older building and they've opted to maintain the old school charm. You enter and there's a handful of tables along with the ordering counter. To the left, however, you have an entire room of booths and tables available. Both rooms are rather narrow, but I found them comfortable and charming. The menu consists mainly of pizza, subs and breadsticks along with drinks. Prices for a whole pie start at $10.99 for a 14" cheese and go up from there based upon size and toppings. I ordered and found a table near the front of the side room. It allowed me to window browse while also leaving lots of room for the wheelchair. At the time I arrived, the place had only a couple other diners but picked up the longer I lingered. The pizza slice was solid, though perhaps a tad on the smallish side. It was certainly tasty, though it didn't really blow me away. The breadsticks, on the other hand, were top notch. While I've seen several comments about service, I must say I found the service to be friendly and attentive. I received multiple iced tea refills including one to go. Even though I was sitting in a corner, I was tended to regularly and never really had to wait for service. I also watched the staff interact well with multiple children who were with one party - if you treat the kids well, I'm a fan of yours. I've wrestled with whether or not to give Wise Pies a 3 or 4-star rating. The truth is that a 3.5 is just about exactly right. Since that's not an option, it comes down to winning service for me and a meal and atmosphere I enjoyed. So, a 4-star rating it is. While Wise Pies has some accessibility concerns, it's far more accessible than Maurizio's and offers free parking on the street. When I'm in Terre Haute, I won't hesitate to go back. read more

My favorite pizza place ever. Fav is the WOW pizza. Thin crust is my favorite so this place is perfect. If you get the combo (one pizza slice with bread sticks) it will fill you up. I would definitely advise getting an entire pizza you're hungry because three silces cost the same price as a full pizza. Restaurant is cozy inside with an old school vibe. Cute little pizza shop downtown right off Wabash and 6th. Great location! Black and white artwork throughout with what looked like original floors gives it a rustic feel. My son ordered 2 slices of pepperoni pizza and I ordered a slice of cheesecake. Pizza slices are massive! I enjoyed a date with my wife here on Friday night about 6pm. I was afraid it would be crowded during the prime dining hours, but there were only a few other tables that were occupied. During our dinner 3-4 other people stopped in for carry out. Parking is ample in the bank's parking lot across the street. Then again, we were not there during the banks operating hours so their lot was empty. There is parking right on the street though. The staff was friendly and helpful in ordering as it was our first time. We went with a small order of breadsticks (made fresh daily!) and a 14" Caesar, Please. Seating outside was very pleasant. They had a covered patio and the picture-perfect weaher topped it off. The food was brought out within a reasonable time. It's a fairly casual joint with paper plates and styrofoam cups. I could tell the breadsticks were fresh (as advertised). However there wasn't anything too spectacular about them. Perhaps some special sauce, seasoning, spices, etc. could really help with making them more of a buzz. The pizza was not the best I've had, but it was pretty good. (After living in the Chicago area for years...I've had my share of ridiculously good pizza.) The word that keeps coming to mind is "good." The sauce, dough, and toppings...we're good, but not great. I wished for more toppings, as it seemed an little sparse. Wifey and I finished off the 14" pie and it seemed just the right amount for us. The atmosphere was very laid back and we lingered and talked for a long time. We left feeling full, but not sick or greasy. I wrestled between the 3 and 4 star rating but settled with 3. Not bad, but not great pizza. Came here on a Friday night with my son and had a nice time. The people are very nice and the service was good. The place was clean and a typical pizza joint. We ordered a sausage and mushroom pizza that took a normal amount of time to get onto our table. The breadsticks were bland but edible, and the pizza was good. I think it's the dough that keeps this place from being great. The crust has a good chew to it, but the taste is bland as though something is missing. We'll come back again sometime. I've been wanting to try Wise Pies for a while now because I kept hearing how great it is, but it's a fair distance from my home. I finally drove out there for lunch and Oh My Goodness! It's so good!! The pizza varieties were beyond just the common ones so I branched out and tried a slice of their crab rangoon and a slice of their vegetarian. My friend stuck with pepperoni. All of them were pizza perfection! A hot, thin & crispy center crust with a delicious soft outside crust, had the perfect amount of saltiness. The toppings were all plentiful and tasted so fresh. I think it was the best pizza I've ever had! Highly recommend!! Well worth the drive. I'll be going back for sure. read more

Best pizza in Terre Haute hands down! I am a huge fan of unique specialty pizzas. There seems to be no other pizza place in Terre Haute that has a comparable selection of gourmet specialty pizzas. My recommendation to you is to come here with a friend and order an 18" pizza. Their pizza is best had when made to order. I have had the slices that they leave out and it's just not as good. I was quite surprised to find such delicious NY style pizza here. My only gripe with their food is the mediocre breadsticks. I wouldn't bother with those. Among other considerations, this place has a fairly nice ambiance/character to it as well. The only let down is the unfriendly service. The employees just don't seem satisfied working here. Hopefully that changes sometime. Nevertheless, this is a Terre Haute gem which is why I gave it 5 stars. read more

Wise Pies serves New York-style pizza in Terre Haute, Indiana They'll certainly make your choice of pizza from scratch, but I took advantage of their premade pizza by-the-slice option. If I had more time, I wouldn't have done this because I've seen the reheating of these slices negatively affect the consistency of the crust at many other places. However, I was happy with how the crust remained fairly soft and somewhat chewy on my pepperoni and carnivore (ham, sausage, and pepperoni) slices from Wise Pies. The sauce was pretty good and the cheese was okay, but there was not a lot of either of them on the pizza. The best part of both slices was probably the flavorful meat. Wise Pies Pizza & Subs has a couple locations in Terre Haute, and I went to the downtown one - close to Indiana State University's campus. This location has a fair amount of room to eat in, and they do offer some bottled beer as well. I don't believe they offer delivery, but it is worth trying carryout or dine-in at Wise Pies. read more

I didn't give it another chance till the other day when I ordered a slice of 3 meat and it was great had good crunch on the crust and not burnt. I tried Wise Pies when some friends came to visit who are serious pizza aficionados. First came out the wilted slimy salads. Bad start. Then we were served the blandest, most boring bread sticks I've ever tasted. They were accompanied by nacho cheese sauce from a can. Gross. I've read great reviews of this place so I was willing to ignore the disappointing sides if the pizza lived up to the hype. It didn't. Not at all. It was dry, bland, and had almost nothing on it. We were so disappointed that we left half the pizza on the table, got in the car, and drove to a different pizza restaurant where we knew we could get a descent pizza.
