I am fond of Witherspoon Grill. I used to take my volunteers for lunch here when I worked nearby and only recently introduced it to the BF. We have eaten there together twice. Once, just the two of us, and most recently with another couple. The BF LOVED the boneless short ribs and continues to talk about it. The last time we were there, I wanted to order the sirloin tips, but the BF got that instead. The meal also includes green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy. I had a bit of it and the combination of flavors were absolutely delicious . Long story short, dinner at WG is worth it. This is an excellent restaurant! The food was delicious and the staff was pleasant. A few things that really stood out during COVID times were: 1) I witnessed a waiter disinfect salt and pepper shakers with two different cleaners. 2) tables were spaced out what seemed further than 6 feet. 3) the staff was attentive of the 1.5 hour rule for dining and gently reminded a party when their time was up. It is always a pleasant experience at Witherspoon Grill. The service is great and they do not rush you AT ALL. There are always different specials that are very good. The artichoke hearts francaise is so totally out of this world amazing!!! Borderline orgasmic even!! My friend enjoyed the calamari too. Bartender was patient and answered all our questions, and asked for refills when our drinks were low. It is in the heart of Princeton, so the atmosphere is good. My fiend and I sat outside on a cool summer evening. The metal chairs were very uncomfortable. The waiter was nice but did not smile at all. The salad was very good but expensive at $10. The drink I got was a pineapple cosmo--medium strong. I ordered a ten cheese onion soup for my entree. It was a regular crock of French onion. I didn't see or taste ten cheeses. My friend got salmon. It was served over a bed of vegetable relish. I tasted the fish. Too strong fishy taste with no seasoning. We got two free bread baskets. The first batch was stale. The second batch was delicious. No dessert The bill was $74. Exorbitant. I probably won't go again because of the crazy prices. read more

Been here many, many times- always a satisfying meal and worth the price- except for this time. Went on Sun 4.18 for our 30th anniversary with a party of 5 and was very disappointed. Service slow- no communication between staff. Long, long stretches between courses and server nowhere to be found. Appetizers/ salads were delicious. Entrees fell short. I had the flank steak special, others in my party had the steak frites, shrimp scampi, char and veal chop. Sea food was ok, nothing special- but the meats were way over cooked , fatty and subpar. For a steak house of this quality- you'd expect more- and for the money spent- we won't be going back for dinner ever. Just finished dinner with friends . The food and service was quite good but the noise made it hard to enjoy . The regular noise was enough in itself but they had a jazz bang in the room that played throughout dinner that made it impossible to hear and have any reasonable conversation. Too bad. What I like about this restaurant is that it has a diversified menu, and they serve generous portions. There is something for everyone from pastas, seafood, steak, and meats. Plus they have a great dessert menu! It's right by a parking a garage which is another plus. Tonight I had the pear and blue cheese salad. It was good, but it was supposed to come with candied walnuts. They ended up being just being plain old walnuts. For entrees I had the crab cakes and a side order of Mac and cheese. The crab cakes were very good! The Mac and cheese was decent. There was too many burnt hard macaroni on top so I couldn't fully enjoy it. They should add some gruyere cheese too give it some more flavor. For dessert I had the banana foster bread pudding and a chocolate fudge layer cake I took to go. The banana foster bread pudding was delicious! The chocolate fudge layer cake was good, but it needed thicker layers in the middle of fudge too give it that "WOW" factor. The restaurant is really nice inside, and my waitress was very attentive. My boyfriend and I had a dinner reservation this past Saturday (5:30pm), we decided to try it out after receiving the recommendation from a good friend, and I'm so happy we did! Our server was excellent and did not miss a beat! (I believe his name was John? But could be wrong) The food and service was excellent, I loved the ambiance as well... the only thing I wasn't fond of was the seating arrangement, the tables were a bit too close for my liking, but luckily the couples seated around us were very personable so it wasn't bad! Overall, I would definitely recommend Witherspoon Grill, we will be back in the near future! PS: You should definitely try the Guadalajara cocktail if you go here, it's addicting LOL! read more

A very pleasant dining experience indeed. We went on a weeknight when it was pretty miserable weather and this was a nice reprieve. The atmosphere is pretty casual, but the food and the prices are more along the lines of fine dining. They have a pretty good beer list including some Jersey offings which I really appreciated. We started with calamari for an app and I really thought it was quite good. Probably the best thing I had. They seem to specialize in steak so I had the ribeye, but the menu certainly wasn't one dimensional. My wife had the ravioli and our friend had the tuna. Everything was good. The ribeye was well cooked and seasoned fine. It came with the most underwhelming fries you could imagine. At this point we noticed we were getting wet. Confusion ensued. The window was broken and when the rain picked up it came right in the restaurant. We asked for some assistance and were abruptly told they couldn't take anything off the bill. Never asked for that, was actually looking for more like a towel, but kind of insulted they assumed we were trying to cop a free app? We didn't break their window. Then the waitress literally asked us to hurry up because she had concerns about driving in thunderstorms. Wasn't even 9pm. So we finished on a little bit of a low note but the food was not bad. I'd go back for maybe lunch, probably not dinner and not if it is raining. On an unrelated note the urinals in the men's room are comically low to the ground. Like unexplainably low. read more

At this point, I've been to Witherspoon Grill more times than I can remember. All things considered, despite a solid strip steak offering at Mediterra, Witherspoon Grill remains the best place for really meaty dishes in Princeton. The service here is pretty unremarkable--I wouldn't count on them for recommendations as to what's worth ordering, and I've found myself wishing someone would refill my water on more than one occasion. As for what to order, the steak tartare is exquisite (and rather filling--I've ordered the steak tartare with a side of fries several times and found this sufficed for an entree)! The fries, spinach dip, bone-in ribeye, and salmon, meanwhile, are pretty good. You can generally avoid the short rib, lobster risotto, lobster mac and cheese, and fried calamari. read more

Good steak, decent sides and ok service made Witherspoon a pleasant dining experience in the downtown Princeton area. We came craving a carnivorous experience and were happy with the range of steak options on the menu. I got the filet mignon which came out pretty perfectly medium rare and our table shared the brussel sprouts, the creamed spinach and the mac and cheese. I found the brussels to be a bit salty but did enjoy the mac and cheese. Weirdly the creamed spinach was almost not creamy enough - it felt more like I was eating cooked spinach with cheese on top instead of the gooey creamed spinach I had in my mind. The serving sizes here are very generous, especially of the entrees and sides, so if you're going with a few friends you can definitely count on sharing. It seemed like those in my party who did not get steak was less thrilled with their entrees than we were - they had large portions but weren't as flavorful. Ambiance wise it is very dim lighting but there are a lot of business patrons during the week so it was a weird vibe - loud yet sort of "romantic" in decor and lighting. I would not recommend the cocktails - they are incredibly strong and the flavor profiles have not been my preference. Stick to traditional beer or wine. The waitstaff can be a little hit and miss - sometimes they are very attentive and helpful but other times service can be incredibly slow, and water refills and simple requests seem to take an overly long amount of time. read more

The dishes were great and delicious. It was a little dark but the outside seating is so nice. They tri to great to everyone as quiet as they can but sometimes when it's very busy it is a little slow but that's expected because of how many people there can be. They like to ask you if you want outside or inside, so that you get what you want. There can be very long waits but you can't control that. I think the longest I've had to wait was about 30 minutes once. read more

I like this place. It's the sort of place where I can be pretty certain that I'm going to get a good meal, good service and a kid-free environment. The room is fairly tight, the bar stretches an entire length of one wall with little free room, and it's loud, but the loudness is a good sign in this case: people are enjoying themselves. It's the closest thing I've found to a NY style steak house (I'm not a Ruth Chris fan) in the Princeton area. I can get a tasty, aged-beef steak with creamed spinach and hash browns that will make me a happy camper. The bar tender knows his stuff (although they ran out of Wild Turkey the other night...how does that happen?!) and there's a helpful list of bottled wines for under $30. The lobster bisque is the only soup I'm going to have there. It's killer good. I've tasted the 5-cheese onion soup, and while it's tasty, it won't steal my heart away from the bisque. One of these days I need to try the seafood tower--it looks pretty good. We've had raw oysters there, and they've been good, which I would expect since the owners also have the Blue Point Grill under their umbrella--another of the very few joints with outside dining in the area. My wife feels the crab cakes are the best she's ever had, and she eats a lot of them. Downsides, other than running out of Wild Turkey, is the bread. It's not bad, but I'd really like some sort of a toasted roll choice. Also, don't get stuck in the "private room" to the left of the entrance. That place is a dead zone. There's none of the ambience of the main room. They should keep that area just for big parties and not try to fit couples along the window. I always choose to wait if they try to sit me there. The service and front door team is very courteous and the place is a hive of activity if you go on a Friday or Saturday night. Sometimes, when it's buzzing, it might take a bit longer than usual for a server to get to your table, but they don't vanish off the floor. My daughter found this on Yelp and chose it for lunch on a visit to Princeton. We were seated quickly even though we didn't have a reservation. I ordered the chicken Cobb salad. Hub had a burger and my beautiful daughter had the lobster roll. The salad was perfection. A generous balance of usual ingredients avocado, blue cheese,bacon, tomatoes, egg, chicken and lettuce. The dressing was on the side. His burger was huge and tasty. The accompanying fries were thin and crispy. Her lobster roll was a bit small but she enjoyed every bite. Great atmosphere and the bar is pretty! Really appreciated the Olympics running on the screens and the waiter striking small talk about it. We got the crab dip and kale salad (with pork). The crab dip was a good starter and as you would expect. Simple toasted French bread slices with a warm cheesy crab dip. Good, but nothing very special. I would not get the salad again though. The pork was tough (and very salty) and the kale leaves were few. Next time, I will try one of their bigger entrees. We've avoided this place long enough due to the overdressed crowd that it is full of, but recently dared to go in on a sunny afternoon for dinner. Seating near the window overlooking Witherspoon St. was charming with an elegant atmosphere. I usually spring for the interesting looking items to experiment on. Eh, that doesn't always work out well... The place had much recommendation, therefore I had the thought to order something basic to size up the place. Since this was mainly a steakhouse, I decided to go with the steak and fries dinner - too boring for my usual fare. Though boring sounding, that was only until the food arrived. The steak came out amazing, and the fries that came in a metal cup (and stayed hot throughout) were some of the best I've ever had. The meal was full of flavor and the taste seemed to linger on for days. The lady also raved about her delicious looking perfect seared scallops and asparagus dish. We topped it off with an equally delicious bananas foster, another boring sounding dessert done right (while enviously watching the two businessmen eat their cool looking sorbets). Coming back shortly after for lunch with our out of town guests, I sprung for the 21 day dry aged Delmonico steak ($37). Seasoned and salted perfectly, this must have been the best steak I had in the last few years. Tasting their Filet Mignon side by side, this fattier special cut was a couple more times more flavorful. Try the steak. I know it sounds basic -- but when you are a career carnivore, you know that the quality of the burger can make a difference between "I had a burger for lunch today" and "I had steak at lunch -- oh no wait, it was a burger." The burger was that good. Perfection seasoned and prepared. Got a little chopped salad on the side; perfect portion, awesome house salad dressing. One of the friends with whom I was dining got the Cobb Salad and said it was awesome; I do plan to go back and try that in particular. The Witherspoon Grill is right in the village of Princeton.. next to the library and has a nice open feel to it. In summer you can sit outside on the patio. Presentation is done well here.. cooking is average...had eggs benedict.. because I saw it on everyones plate.. It was Sunday at 1 pm.. and there were omlettes, salads etc.. but mostly that... so I tried it... eggs were runny undercooked and no flavor on the hollandaise sauce. There's no excuse for that.. that's what makes it great. Home friend potatoes in here and in this town have been hideous - see the update on PJ's very scary stuff. Here.. these were little diced potato's with onion an peppers.. but so small and diced and luke warm.. .. and spiced/colored orangy etc.. over chopped over seasoned underheated somewhat oily.. naa.. skip them! I never had this before but it tasted so good. I couldn't really tell it was steak though. Crab & Artichoke Dip- Delicious melted dip I got the steak salad for my entree with a side of creamed spinach. The Steak was perfectly cooked on the rare side which was what I ordered. The salad had a lot blue cheese which was great! The creamed spinach was delicious and had some cheese sprinkled on top. Service was great and fast! We had like 10 people at the table. Finally made it into this place after years of walking by. Came here for a dinner on a Friday via a reservation on Opentable. The reservation was easy to book so I would suggest going that route as there was a 15-20 minute wait that we avoided. We got a table outside as it was pretty nice out and it presents a really nice view of the courtyard and Witherspoon street. My only complaint about this restaurant is that the outside tables are a bit flimsy. Almost like tables you'd see in a public park. It was also shaky and unstable. Anyway, table aside, it's a really nice atmosphere and I would highly recommend dining outside in the warmer months. I had an order of seared scallops in a creamy bacon vinaigrette with asparagus. It was a very good dish. Scallops were prepared very well as was the asparagus. The bacon vinaigrette was good, but I felt they used a little too much which overpowered the scallops a bit. After scraping some of it off however, the meal was really good. We also had an order of shrimp cocktail for an appetizer and it was fairly standard. Overall a very good experience here. The bar is also great of you can get a seat. Great drink selection including the rum! I'll certainly be stopping by more often. read more
