    Black pepper sauce pork cutlet
    Nicholas k.

A nice little addition to the neighborhood. This place is in the old location of Shabu restaurant so it is realitively small. It's a hong Kong style cafe and the menu is limited in options but so far, it has been good. We ordered the tomatoes pork chop and black pepper pork chop. Black pepper sauce was sooo good. I have never had a sauce like this before. We wished the pork was deep fried longer because it was a little under and wasn't crispy. The tomatoe sauce pork chop was bomb. I am absolutely getting this again. Looking forward to try more items at this place.

Was excited to see that there was a new Hong Kong style cafe in SF! Came here on Saturday at noon and there was a short line. There is a kiosk where you can order takeout and behind that is the waitlist. Tried a few of classic dishes and overall they were decent. Wonton Noodle Soup(7/10) - A decent bowl of wonton noodles. Egg noodles were nice and bouncy and the wontons were a good size and it was topped with yellow chives and some lettuce. The soup was okay...it was a tad sweet. Beef Chow Fun(7/10) - Noodles were good, beef was tender and the wok hay was present and seasoning was lacking a bit. Shrimp and Pork Sui Mai(8/10) - Came out piping hot and was juicy. Very flavorful pork with bouncy shrimp topped with some roe. Black Pepper Sauce Chicken Thigh(7/10) - Decent dish. The chicken thigh was really good and wasn't dry. I wish the black pepper sauce had more flavor...it lacked that punch from black pepper. Baked Pork Chop Rice with White Sauce (7.5/10) - A good rendition of the baked pork chop rice. The pork chop tender and flavorful. The dish was very cheese forward...there was a lot of cheese. Rice was okay, a bit mushy. Service was a bit slow, since they're still working out the kinks. The dishes did take awhile to come out. Pricing is pretty good for the portion sizes(except for the Beef Chow Fun, that was a bit smaller that I'd hope). I would give it some time for them to hopefully improve and will give them a try again!

Don't want to brave the crowds at Supreme Dumpling in the mall? Look no further than this new Hong Kong cafe + dim sum spot in Lakeside. Because it's in Lakeside Village, it's super easy parking. Bilingual English and Cantonese servers and cooks. I always prefer when I can understand what's being said, so I felt right at home. Servers are young and welcoming, but you can tell this is a very new restaurant. Gold utensils and cups, but utensils are super smudged so I cleaned them with a napkin and water and then they were super shiny. Food, however, is on point, thanks to the Cantonese speaking cooks who look like my great aunts and uncles. Our dim sum selections were solid! Siu mai (3/$6), har gow (3/$6.8), steamed egg yolk lava buns (2/$6). Few places in SF seem to get these staples right, however especially for a spot that's not purely dim sum, I was pleasantly surprised--I'd get these again in a heartbeat. Actually, I did immediately order more siu mai since my soon-to-be first grader gobbled up an order before I could get a taste. She also happily ate the side of plain udon I ordered for her lol. Truffle beef fried rice ($14) - truffle is super light; this is more of the typical soy sauce-forward fried rice. But it was nice and homey and I happily ate it. Beef was sliced in small pieces which is good since it's your typical not as tender beef that's often in chow fun. Appreciated the small slices of Chinese broccoli which gave color as well as the slight crunch for texture in each bite. I'd order this again, however I was disappointed that there were no pieces of mushroom--a few bits would go a long way! Lemon tea ($4) had plenty of lemon slices and you could taste the honey. Would def get this again too. It was relatively bustling at 2pm on Fri, so I wonder if it already tends to get more crowded. Easily one of the better restaurants in the immediate area, and they can expect to see my daughter and I back for at least a couple weekday visits before school begins. Hope they will offer delivery and reservations soon!

HK Baked Pork Chop Rice ($15)

You know those cringe-y, cheesy AF Dhar Mann short films? "Don't judge a book by its cover...." "So, you see...." Name alone, I judged. I thought "Wok Up" was going to be a mid Americanized Chinese resto but I was so wrong. Soft opening last week, Wok Up took over Shabu House (same owner) serving delicious HK Cafe (cha chaan teng) fare. Currently open for takeout and dine in only. Soft opening hours: 11:30 am - 2:30 pm, 5 pm - 9 pm everyday. Closed Tuesday. M E N U HK Cafe Fare and Cantonese Dim Sum. One pager but menu will be expanding. Wallet-friendly with nothing over $15. Cc's accepted. F O O D * HK Baked Pork Chop Rice ($15): https://tinyurl.com/27338b6f My litmus test for any new HK cafe is this comfort dish with British roots. A bed of egg fried rice topped with panko crusted, marinated boneless pork chop that's juicy and flavorful, smothered in a creamy tomato sauce with a nice balance of tang and savory sweetness. Finished with mozzarella cheese for that extra satisfying richness. SO good! Enough for two to share. * Black Pepper Chicken Thigh Rice Plate ($14): https://tinyurl.com/ym37mjxj This took us by surprise, the marinated skin-on chicken thigh was deliciously juicy with a charred flavor. Served with a thick and spicy black pepper sauce, steamed rice, and crisp broccoli florets. * Po Tat: Portuguese Egg Tart (2 pc-$6): https://tinyurl.com/5ecpa67c Flaky crust with a smooth custard filling and caramelized top. Not too sweet. Decent but I prefer a more jiggly custard. S E R V I C E Friendly and customer-oriented, Aaron (manager?) was great about checking in and asking for feedback. Prompt food service, we received both our dishes in about 10 minutes. A M B I A N C E Newly renovated space with about dozen tables and open kitchen. P A R K I N G Easy metered parking. Overall, Wok Up is a great addition to Lakeside. If you're looking for wallet-friendly, HK comfort food with generous portions, give this new small business a try!

I came across this new spot on Yelp and decided to give it a try! This HK cafe is clean and modern with a kiosk to place your order in the front for food to go. If you're eating in, grab a table for dine-in service. They just opened last week, according to the gentleman who took our order and served us. ***OUR PICKS*** BEEF CHOW FUN ~ noodles were good, but sadly the beef was on the tough side. Wok hay was good and it was seasoned just right. 4/5 BRAISED BEEF EGG NOODLE SOUP ~ the beef was not your typical beef brisket, but possibly the shank/leg section. It was well seasoned compared to the rest of the dish, but kind of dry even in soup. The beef was too lean for my liking, though the noodles were perfectly crisp and blanched just the way I like them! Wish it had bok choy as there were only a few pieces of cooked lettuce. I was told that the noodles were supposed to be udon and he asked if egg noodles were ok for me. The menu said egg noodles, so I was expecting egg noodles. It seems their menu may be changing to different noodles in the near future. 3.5/5 BAKED CHICKEN THIGH RICE PLATE WITH TOMATO SAUCE ~ my partner ordered this and enjoyed the cheesey rice and tomato sauce. However, the chicken was marinated with 5 spice. The chicken is usually lightly seasoned with neutral spices like salt, pepper and possibly garlic powder. We felt the cheesy tomato sauce didn't mesh well with 5 spice. It played an odd number on our tastebuds. 3/5 PORTUGUESE EGG TARTS ~ you get 2 tarts for $6. A bit pricier than a Chinese bakery! But I wanted to try it. The crust was flakey and buttery though not a lot of crust. Custard was not very rich or creamy. It was more like a regular egg tart than a Portuguese egg tart, just burnt on top. I think I'll stick to getting tarts from a bakery. 3/5 With high ratings from a handful of people, I guess I had high expectations. I hate to be the one to give it 4 stars. The food is actually 3.5 stars. The service was attentive, so I upped it to 4 stars. I just felt some things could have been better. Maybe they're working out the kinks like most new restaurants. Hopefully they will make some improvements for better results. Wishing them the best of luck for their new cafe!

Pork with tomato sauce over rice. Delicious!

We had the fortunate pleasure of eating here during its first few weeks of opening. I'm sure they're still working out the kinks, but we didn't notice any. The food, service, and pricing were spot on, and I can't see what else they could do to improve. We had their pork with tomato sauce and fish with black pepper sauce - both were delicious and perfectly cooked. To end our meal, we had their egg tarts, which were fresh, hot, and also very good. Would love to return to try other dishes. BB

This place opens recently. We came to try it and it's pretty crowded. We had to wait for a table. The place is clean. The decor is modern and simple. Their dim sum is steaming hot and delicious. The wonton noodles dish is excellent. The wonton is awesome, the noodles are cooked just right and the broth is flavorful. This dish tastes just like the ones I had in HK. The baked fish filet over rice with tomato sauce and the stired-fried noodles with soy sauce are both good. We also had a couple of the small plates: The Typhoon pork tenderloin dish and the Stir- Fried Cauliflowers with Beef are both tasty. For dessert, the Portuguese egg tart is crunchy outside and soft inside. Definitely will come back to try other dishes at this authentic HK cafe.

New Hong Kong Style Cafe just opened here on Ocean Ave in the Sunset District. The interior is clean and modern. The menu prices look reasonable and fair compared to other HK style cafes. I do wish there were more menu options but perhaps it's relatively new. Trying out the HK style milk tea is a must try when you are visiting any HK style cafe and this one was really solid. The drink had a strong tea flavor and was not too sweet. We also ordered the baked pork chop rice. The portions weren't huge but adequate for lunch. The pork chop is initially deep fried and then baked over fried rice with a tomato based sauce and cheese. The pork chops were tender but wish they were a little more crunchier. The sauce was slightly sweet with a fresh tomato taste. Nothing special on the fried rice which could use a little more egg. Personally, I liked the truffle beef fried rice the most. It was a unique dish with bites of beef mixed in with truffle. Really satisfying and you can taste the "wok hey." :)

We stopped by for lunch on a weekend and parking was easy to find nearby. Waiters were attentive and setting is clean and modern using turbo stove and machine to do all the cooking . Love the juicy tender pork chop over toasty fried rice with flavorful tomato sauce that didn't taste like ketchup . Nice portion too . 5/5 The beef brisket noodle soup ( replace with won ton noodles as they didn't have the egg noodle). Beef was tender, would prefer some green veggies and wide noodles. 3.5/5 Lemon tea - 3.7/5

Expectations can be fleeting. I should have fled after reading the menu, a two-sided one page sheet (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=rT410_I5kwE522HvthzUVQ), (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=DIKoseAsc3266nJuOoGJUw). This business came up out of curiosity as I was a frequent diner at the previous business known for their hot pot. In seeing the reviews especially from one of my favorite reads Cherylynn N. (https://www.yelp.com/user_details?userid=eKUGKQRE-Ywi5dY55_zChg), it was a priority to try given her opinion. After a busy day of errands, office work, and home tasks, I made a point to come here just after they opened on a cool December Thursday evening. I was a bit surprised that it was totally empty and was given my choice of tables. I picked one near the expediting station since that was the nearest two-seat table. After studying the menu and NOT seeing the popular dishes that caught my eyes, I pivoted. I started with the braised beef broth with noodles (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=TUZ2hOX_WHgaLmbKK05FaA) after being offered a choice of flat rice noodle also; there were small tender pieces of stew like beef pieces, mostly lean. The noodles were on the thin side and soft in texture, not the HK thin chewy noodles. The broth was clear and clean tasting with small pieces of ginger as a garnish as well as two large slices of white oyster mushrooms. It was okay but didn't stand out. I would probably enjoy the spicy braised beef noodle soup more as it was pretty much a one note dish. I also tried the Bang Bang chicken wings (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=6O2PlUPJB7hCShq_r2vXEg). The Chinese description matches that of the famed spicy wings on Irving Street. It was served temperature, smoking hot while being mildly spicy with a light and sticky sauce. The mix of both wing type pieces were crunchy and nicely flavored. I finished about half as the soup noodles were filling. In walking in, I noticed an order station just before the kitchen and was confused whether there was wait service or an order and be seated eatery. A young gal greeted me and gave me my choice of tables. A gentleman asked me what I wanted to drink and I opted for cold water. The wait staff were present but mostly mulling by the cashier and expediting area. Part way into my meal, I asked the man when did the menu change and why. Apparently, the chef left and the new menu started about two weeks ago (early December). The room is clean and updated from the previous shabu please and much brighter. However, coming in wanting to try the baked pork chop rice, JK milk tea, and other items from the old menu that people complimented. The young lady said they have the old recipes and the ownership is the same but I likely won't return unless those menu options return.

Delicious and attentive. Had dinner with Mom and they gave us hot water to drink. Ordering was easy with QR code at table and paper menu was also offered if we wanted it. Baked Pork rice/spaghetti with red or white sauce were both delicious. Tried both sauces at 2 separate occasions. Truffle beef fried rice was great. You can taste the truffle oil. Offering something different from other cafes. Wonton noodle had soft dumplings and spongy egg noodles. Noodle made just right. Typhoon Pork Tenderloin. my only suggestion would be to served with rice on side with a side bowl of broth. Serve it like a Lo-mein. The pork is good but a little dry therefore the broth. Without rice, the plate is incomplete as they charge similar pricing to their full rice/spaghetti plates. Staff was courteous and offered service whenever you look over at them. Dining room is very nice and clean. Street parking was plentiful. Constant flow of take out orders with people popping in and out. Side tip: If you're dining in. free parking at meters starts at 6pm right outside.

Good choice for takeout. Decent amount of options. Also restaurant looks like a nice, clean spot. Next time I think we'll eat in. Service was average at best.

I want to gate keep this place but I really hope they do well and succeed. It's hard to find a good tomato baked pork chop rice and this place hit the spot. The pork was so soft and juicy with an amazing sauce. The wontons were a little small but the sauce on top was soo good. The beef truffle rice was so fragrant and an awesome twist on a classic. We ordered the lava buns for dessert and it was a great way to end dinner. The staff is so nice and attentive. I definitely will be back.

One note is that parking can be a bit challenging so get there a bit early. The inside is lively and filled me with so much nostalgia with the decor. The staff is really attentive and friendly. I also appreciate the free peanuts and cucumber salad that you get when you're seated. My boyfriend and I ordered a lot of food because we wanted to try so many things! The lamb skewer was super moist and had a nice flavor. The XO escargot with milkbread had a nice buttery, garlic taste. The milk bread was fluffy and when dipped in the sauce it tasted very rich. We also got the clay pot rice and it reminded me of when I had it in China. The rice was crispy at the bottom and well seasoned. My favorite dish of the night was the squab. It was cooked excellently and the skin was really crispy. The five spice powder on the side really brought out the flavor of the meat. The eggplant was cooked well and portion was good but it didn't stand out as much as the other dishes. Overall, I would visit this place again. It definitely lives up to the hype. The squab and and clay pot rice were the stand outs to me but all the other food was really tasty as well.

Honestly, I think I have to readjust my expectations for the SF food scene. If there were no wait/reservation, I would think of this as a very solid restaurant (hence the 4 stars). The beef chow fun is on par with ones I'd get in NYC Chinatown, and was actually not very overpriced. Our server was very sweet but only recommended things that my friend did not love (seafood/spicy food). I was excited for the spicy cabbage, hoping it'd be comparable to the addictive spicy cabbage at Uluh (NYC). I was disappointed. The popcorn chicken was a bit dry; I would not get it again. The mapo spaghetti had heat, but not much flavor, and it was okay for me - worth getting because it sounded intriguing, but fell short of my expectations, especially since I've made mapo udon, mapo ramen, and mapo pie at home that were better. The escargots with milk bread was definitely my favorite; sourcing escargot alone is a plus and it was very well-executed. The milk bread was fantastic, pillowy and soft. Our server was very nice and offered to move us to the cute window seats after we were already seated at the counter, which I really appreciated. However, would I spend energy trying to get a reservation here or waiting in line? Absolutely not. It makes me sad to think that this is the pinnacle of Cantonese food in this city full of Cantonese people, but I guess it makes me extra appreciate food in NYC.

One thing that stood out was the restaurant's mandatory 18% gratuity, which is automatically added to every bill. While I understand and respect service charges, I also believe they should come with a reasonable standard of service. During our meal, we politely asked our waitress, Lily, if she could please bring us some soy sauce whenever she had a moment. In response, she audibly sighed, turned her head, and rolled her eyes, which felt unnecessarily rude and unprofessional. Throughout the rest of the meal, whenever we thanked her for bringing our dim sum, she didn't acknowledge us, and simple requests like refilling our water were ignored while she happily chatted with other coworkers and the table immediately next to us (which appeared to be people she knew outside of work). The rest of the staff seemed normal-friendly, which made this interaction stand out even more. Had the gratuity been optional, I would have tipped based on the service we received. Because it was mandatory, paying an 18% service charge for an experience that lacked basic courtesy and attentiveness felt particularly unfair and disappointing. This was my second visit here, but it seems bad service is not uncommon based on other yelp reviews.
