Actually I have the mayor to thank for this Outer Sunset find. I watch Dan Lurie's daily Instagram feed because he shares evidence of how the city is improving, and he spotlighted this place. I recognized it from riding the L-Taraval line to the Sunset Dunes where I sometimes walk on the former Great Highway. This time, I stopped at this casual deli cafe before heading back into the city. It appeared most of their customers were regulars coming in to pick up takeout orders of roasted duck, pork, and chicken. In fact, the constant rhythm of the chopping cleaver was pervasive as I found my way to the cafe potion. Since it was my first time here, I decided to take advantage of their two-item lunch plates and chose the $15.50 Roast Duck and Chicken with Rice (Photo 8). Accompanied by braised cabbage, a scoop of white rice, and a minced garlic and green onion dipping sauce, the plate featured hefty portions of roasted duck and dark soy sauce chicken. I'm a Richmond District kind of girl, but will definitely drive across town for Win's tasty roast duck. I know sucking the bones is rude, but I couldn't help myself. The flavor was so delish!!!! It was around dinner time and wanted some bbq meat to go. We decided to try Win's restaurant again. The place is kind of dark inside. Not too many tables, but it wasn't crowded. We could have eaten there, but we just wanted it to go. We've had their food a few years back, but it was pre-pandemic. We weren't sure what to expect. But we were pleasantly surprised! We got 1/2 a duck and some roast pork. We did reheat the roast pork and duck in an air fryer for about 8 minutes and the skin was SO crispy! And the duck was seasoned just right and not overly salty. I heard about this place that their roast duck was fantastic. Well, I had to try it for myself. Win's restaurant is out in the avenues. Parking is limited but eventually you'll find a space. The restaurant is small with limited seating. However, most people seem to come here for take out of roast duck and roast pork. The service was excellent, order was taken and the food arrived quickly. I ordered the wonton noodle soup and a plate of roast duck and roast pork. The roast duck and roast pork was very delicious. The young duck meat was tender and flavorful. The roast pork skin was crispy and the meat was tender and full of flavor. Probably one of the best tasting roast duck I've had in a while. The wonton noodle soup on the other hand was very disappointing. The wontons did not taste fresh and the soup was very bland. If you want to waste $36 on a whole roast duck that is flavorless, tough, primarily bones and skin, with a minuscule amount of anything edible, this is your duck. I hate to be so critical, but just to be somewhat civil, the service and ambiance seem to be just okay. Tried some of their BBQ pork which was okay only because it had some flavor with much more meat by comparison. I definitely wouldn't recommend the roast duck though. read more

Anyways, a co- worker spoke well of the way Win's restaurant stating they cook their Peking Duck by using their hands to turn over the bird while in the oven instead of packing their ovens together with chicken and other food items. Our duck and chicken rice plates were quite greasy. It seems like mostly regulars who speak Cantonese come here. My first time ordering in store and it was hard to know how to line up to order take out especially since there's a row of chairs where people are sitting at randomly, so I got cut in line by a few older ladies, but finally after ordering, we waited around 30 minutes before we finally decided to go finish walking our dog first while I stayed to wait. Good thing we decided that because we waited around 40 minutes total! Small restaurant located on Taravel outer sunset. It was my first time eating here and won't be my last! Service was great and friendly. We got a bunch of different dishes, my favorite is their soy sauce chicken. I loved the saltiness of it. They also have some already made Asian savory snacks to go and have duck/cha siu/chicken... My family didn't know they close at 6:30pm and we got there at 6pm. They were very friendly the whole time and we were the last table to leave. My family thought it was weird they were cleaning up and some workers were leaving, we didn't think it's because they actually closed. We thanked everyone at the end and the person chopping the meats at the front was so kind and actually thanked us for coming to support their business it was such a cute and wholesome moment. As soon as I saw the roasted duck in the window AND easy street parking, I was sold. I ordered the roasted duck and BBQ pork over rice. I just happened to be buying a drink at Andytown when my roommate asked if we should try it out. I love duck, so I said yes. The wonton duck noodles are small portions and the duck itself is like scraps. The duck wasn't as flavorful as it was in past years. I think it's because the OG chef left. Wife came in here to order food for takeout. While they were nice to her, they told her the food bill was 90 dollars. My wife was puzzled and asked them to read out the reciept and add up everything to make sure the order was indeed 90 dollars. It was actually 62 dollars. Thinking this was a mistake, she asked the guy why it was 90 dollars previously. The guy didn't even look at her and walked away. She went up to another person working there, and they just waved her away and she took her food and left. We're Chinese, so it's not like we can't tell what is and isn't on the menu. I wonder what would happen if you aren't able to respond back in Chinese and get waved off by them ripping you off. I would say, avoid this place. Don't spend money on dishonest buisnesses, even if it's a locally run restaurant. If you can't be honest about pricing in this economy, you deserve to lose buisness. read more

Win's for decades has been our "go to" when we have a taste for Chinese food. We have found the service always to be courteous and accommodating, despite the ownership and menu changes over the years. On what must be their fifth or sixth try, the new management at Win's has put together a terrific menu. At the beginning, they operated under the old management's menu, which emphasized soups, stir fries, and noodle dishes. They replaced that menu with a series of different ones that mostly emphasized roasted meats, clay pots, and dinner "sets" that were pictured but not explained. The current version of the menu is back to basics, with a bit of everything. Prices definitely are higher, but not grotesquely so and, more to the point, they are competitive. Over the course of menu run, you could order items from the old management's menu, but sometimes they didn't turn out as they used to. In fairness to Win's, the old items usually were terrific and up to or even better than the old standards, but sometimes they were conceived differently by the new chefs, so I decided to stick more to the current menu items. The last time I picked up food at Win's, I ordered off the brand new menu for my mother in law's birthday dinner. We got her favorite item, the sweet and sour pork, the pork and tofu clay pot, vegetarian ma po tofu, curry chicken, roast duck and pork rib combo, vermicelli with shredded duck and pickled vegetables, and the $5 jellyfish appetizer. The clay pot is my favorite Win's dish, with tender and savory pork belly and delicious firm tofu. The jellyfish was great and a super bargain at $5. The weakest dish was the ma po, which we still enjoyed despite the sauce being a bit thinner than we'd like. When I got home, I realized that my bags did not include the rice for three that I was certain that I ordered and suspect I was charged for. If I was charged, that would make three consecutive sets of Win's owners who owe me rice. read more

Win's has changed ownership since I last visited the place. My husband's favorite dish, salt and pepper fried fish is no longer on the menu. We won't be eating there since he doesn't like pasta, rice, Chinese barbecue items, seafood, or organ meats. I ordered a piece of char siu and a pound of roast pork to take to my parents, and it cost me $27! It took them 20 minutes to chopped the items. They were really slow chopping items for the dine-in crowd and the to-go orders. I felt sorry for the guy who just ordered a chopped item over rice. He was there before I got there, and he left with his order just before I got mine. Good luck on finding parking. My husband was double parking and circling the block as he waited for me. Our 2nd time here and highly recommended by my sister and brother in law. They live in San Francisco and frequently have lunch here and have been made to feel like family. The food is amazing from the pork and carrot house soup, roast duck, special chicken, squab, ribs and seaweed. Today we had the noodles with beef stew. Last time we had the Garlic noodles that was tasty without any meat. The waitstaff were Very Attentive! We ordered the staples. cha siu- normal, nice glaze outside. some pieces are more dry than others. roast pork - husband likes it, I thought it was okay, I'm not a fan, because again some pieces are dry to me. tea yellow chicken - I think that's what it's called, their version of I guess soy sauce chicken/yellow chicken? It was pretty tasty! Some may say a littleeee salty but I liked it! duck - we thought it was again okay. I felt like it had good meat to fat ratio. Overall we were happy with what we got. So unfortunately, I have to give low ratings for Wins do to the high prices and subpar food portions. Combo BBQ plate is $17 and not at all like the pictures on website. I broke my cardinal rule of never getting BBQ plates and only ordering whole or half ducks because you know what you're getting. Rolled the dice and got mostly bones for the duck and five small pieces of roast pork. Not to mention that they want cash and charge a 3% surcharge on cards. Maybe my second rule should be to avoid places that are cash only or upcharge for cards cause this in itself is kinda shady. read more
