Most of the reviews are for the dim sum on the left hand side but I went to their hot food deli on the right hand side. Somehow I spent $160 -- yikes, don't ask me how that happened... 3lbs each of rice noodle rolls, sticky rice, and thin stir fry noodles. Then 3lbs of fish, black bean chicken, and fried chicken wings. They don't display price per pound for anything so it's easy to get carried away if you're just ordering with your eyes. Ladies are quick and efficient here. They do speak some English and they do also take credit card!! Even my Apple Pay!!! This is a no nonsense ordering takeout place so even if the lines look long, you'll get through fairly quickly. Now quality of the food, it was maybe good for the first pound but then the leftovers got really tiring. Also I found every single item to be slightly sweet, as if they added just a smidge of sugar to everything -- not what I like -- so for that reason, I cannot see myself getting hot deli items from here again. Good things first. This is probably the cheapest dim sum ever at $1.25 per piece, and they have a good variety! They do a good job keeping them warm so you can eat them right when you buy them. But yeah while this will scratch the itch for dim sum, the quality just isn't there. Har gow and chive/shrimp dumplings 2/5 - both had an insanely thick wrapper and they definitely skimp on the shrimp. The overall size is quite large however so it will fill you up. However, I'd much prefer them be smaller in size with a nice thin wrapper than to have this monstrosity of thick ass wrapper with not enough shrimp. Flavor was OK. Siu mai 2/5 - tried both chicken and pork, tasted okay but definitely below average. Lotus leaf sticky rice 3/5 - probably the best thing. It was alright. $5.39 for a fairly large size one. This use to be one of my go to for quick dim sum pick up, but this visit showed me that things have changed round here. The hot food section still looks good, but in this visit we just got food from the dim sum side. We got some pork shumai shrimp har gow, shark fin dumplings, and some dessert I forgot the name to. Pork shumai still tasted good. But for some reason I recall it had shrimp in it as well, but didn't on this visit. Maybe I'm tripping?! The shrimp har gow was hella skimpy. Hella dough and less shrimp... The shark fin dumplings were just ok. Tastes like something was missing. The mochi like dessert with red beans in it wasn't my cup of tea. Came by here yesterday on Irving and my comments from my previous review still stand for the most part. For the uninitiated, HB is a great spot for take-out dim sum and Chinese lunch specials. Think of this as a homemade Panda Express, only MUCH better and add in a full selection of dim sum too! As you walk up, the Dim Sum counter is on the left, and the hot lunch entree counter on the door to the right. it's a functional vibe here, nothing at all fancy, with servers focused on the mission of getting you your food so you can be on your way. They are patient, and courteous. Knowing a little bit of Cantonese or Toi Shan dialect helps here, but they understand English just fine. The Lunch Counter Side: We usually frequent the dim sum side the most, but the lunch counter has some of the best Chinese-style fried chicken drumsticks in town. Crispy, salty and oh so tasty, so we pop on over to that side too to pick up a couple of drumsticks, and their chow mein which hit the spot for us. Other hot entrees include beef with broccoli, veggie dishes, chicken with eggplant, lightly fried whole shrimp, tofu with veggies.. etc. Dim Sum @ Happy Bakery The Dim Sum Side is pretty good as well. The items I love to order here include: Har Gao (shrimp dumplings) These have a translucent glossy skin, good filling, but are a bit too thick for others to be award winning. As for me, I take these home, and toss them in a HOT frying pan to give them a light sear before serving. Chinese Tamale (Doung) I love the Chinese Tamales here. Filled with plenty of rice, but a good amount of filling too with fatty pork, a tender slice of Chinese Sausage, 1000yo egg yolk and yellow beans (or peanuts), they are perfect for stashing in the fridge for those busy days where you just don't have time to cook at lunch. I just steam these for about 15 minutes and voila! This is one of two Happy Bakeries here in SF.. Their mothership is located on the other side of town over in the Richmond on Clement. Stopped by here on the way home from grocery shopping and ordered har gow and siu mai. It was $3.75/3 pieces of each dim sum. I believe they only take cash. Overall, it was pretty standard and not the best dim sum I've had, but is convenient if you're looking for a quick meal. 3.5 stars. We were in the area and stopping by again to pick up a couple of lotus leaf wrapped rice, Chinese tamales. This time I tried the green bean filled. Unlike other places , their green bean is all green bean or with an egg yolk. At this bakery, it's got all the regular fillings with some green beans in it. I thought it tasted pretty good and plan to get some more next time. The prices have gone up now. For the 3 tamales and 2 lotus leaf wrapped rice, it was $26 with tax. The food is good, however the tall lady that works with the dim sum is rude. I enjoy the dim sum. It taste very good. If the lady was not rude and acted mad with everyone in line, I would give the place a 5, but I give it a 4 because the lady that always handles the dimsum is screaming and rude. The customer service was awful--the staff seemed uninterested and unwilling to help as soon as I walked in. The food tasted stale and didn't seem fresh at all. I walked by from the other direction which north or south and then I found that they have all the same food that my mom liked and it's good and everyday they serve the food and I can pay about $20 and eat 2 meals and then I still need dinner. Spending almost $4 for a Large Chicken Bun, the filling was disappointingly small. We asked for half dozen but they ran out and sold us a 3 large and 3 regular Chicken Buns. My go to spot for whatever this mochi with coconut, sugar, and peanut ball stuff. Bought 3 today (1 order) and I believe it was a little over $4.00. Typically don't buy anything else from this place. No inside dining that I've ever known but I only started coming here around 2020 and they've never offered it even though they do have indoor seating. It's all to go. They have a hot food to go bar on the opposite side of this dim sum bar. I believe I've tried their noodles before. Pretty fairly priced. Did notice the lady wearing gloves getting my stuff bag it using tongs but also not removing the gloves to take the cash. Parking sucks on Irving unless you come early like before 10. We are frequent frequent customers of happy bakery these days. We still regularly buy the zhong zi (chinese tamales) and lo mai gai (sticky rice with chicken) as quick weekday meal options, but on top of that we have also been going for their steamed buns and chow meins. The steamed buns are a little more expensive than options in the inner richmond but they still taste just the same. I really enjoy their big chicken buns and their chinese sausage bun. I can't quite say the same about the dim sum as good luck dim sum really is king...but if you are hankering for a quick fix, this will do. The pork siu mai are my fave. The har gow skin is too thick imo. But, they do have my favorite childhood dim sum dessert though - it's like a mochi pancake with egg custard inside. Yum! As for the hot deli noodles, they are a reliable option. The ladies will really pack the box (sold by weight) but that also means a small box can easily equal if not surpass a regular flat box from any nearby restaurant. Only get it when it looks fresh though...if it's near empty, pass on it. It's really greasy on the bottom. As for the hot deli, most things we've tried have been pretty decent. This review is for the dim sum side of the business. We were in the area and wanted some dim sum since it's easy to eat in the car. The line had only 3 people ahead of me on a Sunday around 11.30am so I got in line. I was expecting much but the dim sum was better than I expected and most likely comparable to the popular take out dim sum places on Clement Street. I went with the usual suspects and something new: Shrimp (har) gow - good shrimp flavor and size. The skin is a bit thicker than I would like but it is good and has a good bouncy texture. Pork siu mai - also good and juicy Shark fin gow - this one is one of my fave things to order and it is good here with the slightly chewy skin and the filling has a crunch Boiled leek shrimp pork gow - never had this before but the lady recommended it. I thought the leek flavor might be too strong but it was good and the skin had a good chewy texture Sticky rice bun - The rice is a little drier than the leaf wrapped sticky rice but that gives it a different texture with the bean curd wrap Without a long wait and with pretty good dim sum I would definitely come back here again. I like to stop here occasionally enroute to the airport or just coming through town, Happy Bakery is a quick hitter for an inexpensive grab and go dim sum fix, right off 19th Street. Just line up, order and take away. Decent har gow, giant shu mai and enormous fried sesame balls with black bean paste to round out an order. Their steamed pork buns, while very large, had a strange version of bbq sauce inside, a glow in the dark pink red that doesn't quite taste right somehow. On this visit, I was looking to try the fried rice/fried noodles. The fried rice didn't look that good,due to lack of veggies, but I tried the fried rice noodles with bbq pork and it was scrumptious! This review has been a long time coming. In this case though, it's not because I came here years ago and never got around to writing my review. Rather, it's because I came here years ago, have been back countless times since then, and I STILL haven't written my review. It's subtle, but there's a difference - this is an ongoing thing! You know, just in case I decided to give a different rating. Yeah, that's why I haven't done this until now...ha! Now, despite what their name might suggest, Happy Bakery isn't your "cakes and cookies"-sort of bakery. Rather, think more like har gow and siu mai, as it's more of a "dim sum to-go" type of joint. What sets them apart from similar spots along Irving, though? The other half of the business - a Chinese to-go counter where you can get a bunch of deli staples, such as chow fun, chow mein, fried rice, fried chicken wings, sweet & sour pork, braised tofu, and so much more (though no char siu, roast duck, or roast pork, unfortunately). While I've picked up food from both of their counters, I frequent their dim sum one far more often. Not that any of their hot foods that I've tried have been bad; in fact, their drumsticks and wings are actually pretty solid (crispy, albeit oily). It's just that nearly all of the other hot foods I've tried have been unremarkable, like their chow mein. On the other hand, I've enjoyed nearly everything from their dim sum side, especially their siu mai (meaty, juicy) and fairly unique sticky rice balls (SO GOOD!). Though I can see how people may not be overwhelmed by the food here, I find it surprising that so many people have shaved off stars because of the service. Beyond how I've never had any problems, shouldn't it be kind of expected that workers aren't going to be overly friendly, given the reputation of Chinese eateries. Sure, they skip the pleasantries, but it's not like they're outright rude. Based purely on taste, Happy Bakery fits the exact definition of a THREE AND A HALF STAR rating - three stars for the Chinese deli side, four stars for the dim sum side. However, factoring in their prices (3 items for $2.20-$2.50, depending on what you choose), it's an easy call to round up to four. Even though traditional dim sum joints might taste better, it's hard to argue with paying half the price (or less!) while eating from the comfort of my own home. read more

Dim Sum is 3 pieces per order and of course, I order the usual, Har gow, Shui Mai, Chiew Jeow Fun Gow, turnip cake, lotus wrapped sticky rice and some other things. I was surprising please at how fresh and hot the dim sum was. They were all delicious too. I would totally come back here. Across the hall from them they also have a Chinese counter take out place. they have a 2 item special for $7.95 over a big bed of rice. I wasn't exactly enthusiastic about what I ordered from the take out but it was reasonable. Definitely stick to the dim sum if you are ever around though. IT's better than it looks. read more

Happy Bakery was a take-out restaurant I frequented as a kid--the steam trays of dim sum and pastries called to me, and I still recognized some of the Chinese ladies running the place from 20 years ago! There might not be anything all that impressive about the food--the shrimp dumplings, chive dumplings, and chicken shiu mai are things I've had over and over again; the chicken with sticky rice in lotus leaf was served cold but had a huge amount of savory chicken and shiitake mushroom filling. And everything here was cheap--no more than $2 to $3 for an order. So would this be a place I'd highly recommend? Perhaps not, but worth a visit for old times' sake! read more

I really don't want to give them an updated lower- starred review. This used to be my Go-To restaurant for many years, but now their price has gone up and quantity/Quality gone way down. Whenever I ordered the two item rice plate, I barely get any food. It's just ridiculously small quantity of food/meat and like 80% rice. I mean come on. The lady does this with a sneakily like she's having joy giving you literally 80% rice with no meat. The dim sum price has gone up like crazy too. 3 pieces of dim sum, which is "one order" is $3 now. $1 a piece. Which is fine but again, it's 80% wrapper and barely any meat at all. I swear to god this place does it on purpose. It's really sad this place has gone so down hill. I really don't want to, but I'm done with this place and won't be coming here anymore with so many other options around this area. Look, I get it, times are tough and small businesses are hurting. But you cannot skimp on giving customers a fair amount of food for patronizing your business. Read my previous review from 11 years ago, I praised this place so much back then.
