Looking for a spot to have lunch on New Year's Eve and found Sun Maxim's open with a table free. This was my first time dining in as we've had food to go years before. From my recollection, they didn't have as many tables available. But now, tables start in the front and extends to the back room. ***OUR PICKS*** SHRIMP DUMPLINGS ~ the skin was a bit thick but the dumplings were large with lots of shrimp filling. 4/5 PORK SHU MAI ~ good sized dumplings with good flavor and juicy filling. 4/5 BEEF RICE ROLLS ~ thin rice crepes with soft beef filling. Only problem was trying to keep the beef from coming out of the rolls. It was slippery and didn't stay together. But the texture was good all around. 4/5 PRESERVED MEAT WITH YELLOW EEL CLAYPOT ~ nice crispy rice on the sides and good amount of eel and preserved meat. This was the highlight of our meal. And the rice wasn't burnt or greasy. 5/5 Enjoyable dim sum and claypot rice! If you're in the area and looking for good, crispy claypot rice, this is the spot! Healthy servings and yummy!!

Scorched rice upon arrival...became darker, crisper the longer it sat in the pot.

Table next to us: "Do you have orange chicken?" Server: "No..." Table next to us: "Ok, we'll get the fried egg rolls, fried wontons, fried chicken wings, and fried sesame balls." Me *screaming inside*: "NoOoooOoooo!" I know it's their money and they probably have a mad craving for fried stuff but that's not what Sun Maxim's is known for. It's like going to HoPR and ordering fish. All the po po and gung gung come to Maxim's for the cheung fun (noodle rolls) and bo zai fan (claypot rice) because they know what's up! Sun Maxim's has been around for as long as I can remember, at least since I was in high school. I remember they used to be a takeout dim sum and bakery shop. They changed owners and it's now a full-service, sit-down resto. Takeout, delivery, and indoor dining available. M E N U Cantonese Cuisine, specialty: cheung fun (noodle rolls), bo zai fan (claypot rice), and jook (porridge). They also have your usual dim sum staples. Weekday breakfast special combos from 8 am - 11 am. Complimentary hot tea. Cc's accepted. F O O D I've come here several times now and stick with these items, in different protein variations: * Shrimp Rice Noodle 鮮蝦腸粉 ($9.25): https://tinyurl.com/4w6j4sk3 Perfect noodle texture - silky smooth and supple with great elasticity. It's also thin and slightly translucent so you can see the filling. Large, plump shrimp with a nice snappy texture. Douse it with the tableside sweet soy...so delicious. * Preserved Meat & Meatloaf Clay Pot Rice 腊味肉饼煲 ($16.99): https://tinyurl.com/yc48mwtp - Prep time: 20 minutes - Includes veggies but you can get a side plate with a larger portion for +$2 Canto comfort food, the savory pork patty's juices infuse into the fluffy white rice underneath and the rice crust gets golden brown and crunchy. The preserved meat and chinese sausage adds a sweet umami. Includes two pieces of crisp boy choy. Hearty, deeply satisfying, and balanced meal. S E R V I C E Friendly and efficient lone server. When she's not busy, she'll offer to pack our leftovers. A M B I A N C E No-frills, 8 tables and two large banquet tables in back. P A R K I N G Easier street parking before 10 am...after that...good luck! Overall, I think Sun Maxim's make some of the best cheung fun in the city (if not the best) and solid claypot rice. Worth the trek across the city for me!

Came here during an hour of desperation and was pleasantly surprised with the food. Reminded of something my mom would cook. Highly recommend the stir fry beef noodle dish. Interestingly, we noticed that every single table around us ordered that dish, too. It was really good. The rice noodles were not ordinarily good.

Sun Maxim's was never too far from my neighborhood near City College since it's in the middle of the Sunset District. Just had to go to that place after I got passed it during the Holiday Bazaar Night Market. After my eye exam, I had to quickly order Silver Needle Rice Noodles for takeout before heading home at night. The middle aged Cantonese owner sounds as generous as she's strict, and kinda like how well she approaches patrons like me. She definitely asked if I would like to have a congee or at least a lesser dim sum to pair with my order. But I insisted that I had just one for takeout. Thankfully, I had a free cup of hot tea while waiting 7 to 8 minutes for my takeout order. Silver Needle Rice Noodles was my most favorite dish since I had one as a medium dim sum back in Seafood Peninsula. They're like the size of a broad rat's tail; the shape and color made to look more interesting than the thick layered chowmein I had as a kid. That's why I can't stop having so much of it until I'm satisfied. Back home, the Silver Needle Rice Noodles lacked moisture as they came off with the rolling of my tongue. Other than that, it's not too bad. Hopefully, I was expecting a veggie option for my most favorite dish; well, I take what's given to me anyway. When I look at Sun Maxim's, this Cantonese eatery was completely similar to the Maxim's Hong Kong in many different places during my last family trip overseas. Whichever Maxim's I gone to, I hardly find any better food options let alone specials written on their special board on the wall. Breakfast, lunch and dinner, Maxim's MX my parents and I gone to close to the hotel we were staying was the only place to eat there. Sun Maxim's in Sunset District of SF is one place that always reminded me of where my parents and I were on a family trip.

I just ordered lunch from this restaurant and had it delivered to my apartment and the lunch I had delivered to my place from this restaurant was very good and was like butter in my mouth. I highly recommend this place. The service was nice and the ambience of this place was decent too from what I've read in other reviews. I give them 4 stars

Delicious meat and eel clay pot and fresh steamed shrimp noodles. The pot keeps the rice nice and crispy when you stir it. As a person that doesn't eat rice I was surprised I almost ate the whole bowl lol. Also loved the watercress soup but note portions are one person. Expected a bigger bowl for sharing. Staff are fast and friendly. There are smaller tables in the entry and large tables toward the back. There's also a tv that runs a continual silent ad on the food lol. Soundproofing is minimal if you have sensory issues. Skip the scallop congee though. We got takeout for that and it lacked flavor.

heard the hype about the eel claypot rice and rice rolls so I had to come here. everything was really cheap so that was a plus point. unfortunately, I wasn't a huge fan of the food. 1. sparerib & preserved meat claypot rice ($16.50): unfortunately the claypot rice missed the crispy bottom, I think it wasn't hot enough. there wasn't a lot of sauce either so the rice was pretty dry 2. chinese donut rice roll ($8.50): there was a big ant wrapped into our rice roll at first when they brought it out... we pointed it out and they seemed in denial at first, then whisked it back to the kitchen and brought us a fresh one later 3. pork siu mai ($6.25) 4. bbq pork bun ($6.50) 5. beef congee ($6.50): came pretty plain so we had to add our own soy sauce. it had a lot of sliced ginger too

My friend recommended me to try Sun Maxim's. So happy that we did. I have some dishes that I really like such as Chinese donut rice noodle because Chinese donut was crispy and dipping with sauce. So simple but good. Yum! Mango mochi was good too, it took about 20 min to bake. Michelle was our waitress. She was very nice and patience. She took care of us really well. Thank you

Sun Maxim's used to be a to-go dim sum restaurant with an assortment of dim sum ready. I went in today at 7pm hoping to get food for tomorrow. I ordered a century egg and pork congee $6.50 and a Chinese donut $3.25 thinking it might be fast. The owner tried to up sell me on her rice rolls. After waiting for over 15 minutes, I went in the back and ask her not to heat it up as this is for my breakfast tomorrow. They didn't even have the oil heated up yet. She refunded me for the Chinese donut. The congee tasted OK. Nothing special.

First time here.. cuz all the dim sum places was closed on Irving street, we stumble upon this restaurant , thought it was a dim sum restaurant, but they serve rice plate and wonton noodles and clay pot rice, the lady didn't even give us hot tea or water once we sat down,, we ask if they have crispy fried shrimp dumplings??? N she had to run to kitchen n asked,, we heard them yelling at each other,, geez like they don't know their own menu??? I only ordered steam noodles n I asked about shrimp wonton noodles soup has shrimp or not, she said yes, but when order came out it only had a speck of shrimp, not even half a shrimp,, not worth $15 a bowl.,,soup was so light in favor.. so water down,, only the order of pork dumplings came out OK taste,, we had a horrible snack there,,, never again we will go... not worth the money and time to eat there cause that lady keep going to the kitchen and screaming and yelling....

We came here for lunch bc my uncle hadn't been here in eight years and wanted to try it again. We ordered two types of congee, Chinese donuts - small and light, pork buns and turnip cakes. Mom and I shared the Sun Maxim's individual size $6.50 - it was ok. Turnip cakes were simple and good. I've had other turnip cakes with mushrooms and dried shrimp inside. There were constant orders for take outs. One person handled the cash register, orders, serving and I couldn't see behind the screen, the cooking too? Prices are decent. Would I be back? No, sorry. I've had better.

After a relaxing session at Facial Plus, I asked my esthetician for a nearby restaurant recommendation. She suggested Sun Maxim's, raving about the delicious food at reasonable prices. She mentioned that everything on the menu is good, but especially recommended the rice rolls, clay pot rice, and pan-fried sticky rice. Yum! My husband and I were lucky to snag the last table for two. The waitress was friendly and attentive, quickly bringing us drinks and menus. Despite the steady flow of customers, she had to turn people away, asking them to return in 30 minutes since the restaurant was at full capacity. The phone was ringing constantly with takeout orders as well. We ordered the preserved egg and pork congee (5/5), BBQ pork rice rolls (6/5), and the preserved meat and spare ribs clay pot rice (6/5)--all absolutely delicious! However, it took about 45 minutes for our food to arrive, which I suspect was due to the place being short-staffed. Since it's a small restaurant and the weather was unusually hot, all the customers were sweating while waiting. Would I go back? Absolutely! The Sunset District is rarely this warm, so I'm sure it'll be more comfortable next time. I'm always happy to wait for good food!

Definition of decent food, but questionable service. Came by Saturday ~1:30 pm for lunch. The place was full with a 30-minute wait. Upon waiting, it was very apparent that many orders were being delivered to the wrong table and shuffled around. The place is somewhat small with ~12 tables, so be prepared for a wait if the place is full. When it came to ordering, only one person had ordering abilities, which made it hard to order and ask for the bill when the same person was running orders and handling other affairs. What we got: - Beef, pork, shrimp rice noodle~ The rice noodle skin was very soft and fresh, highly recommend grabbing a dish, but would probably opt out of the beef and/or pork flavor as the minced pork/beef seemed off. -Watercress Duck Gizzard Soup~ which reminded me of the one my mom would make at home, but semi-watered down. Very traditional flavors. Solid. -Fried Chicken Wings~very decent. Crispy. Simple dry seasoning. -Preserved Meat and Yellow Eel Clay Pot~THE STAR OF THE SHOW. Came for this dish and it did not disappoint! This dish was last to arrive, but rightfully so. Crispy bottom. Flavorful meat. PRESENCE OF VEGETABLES! The service here was rough to witness and experience though. Orders were not well tracked as only one person could place orders. Food coming out was passed around tables before it landed at their respective tables, something I saw happen to my dishes as well. The servers were constantly arguing, during and behind the scenes. My condolences to the table over who waited an extra 20 minutes for their last dish of shui mai, only for it to arrive late, raw, and had to be sent back. All in all, the clay pots and rice noodles here is very good! Service, not so much.

Haven't been in person yet so I am speaking solely off of takeout options. So after getting their food about 4828732 times I think it'd pretty long overdue I drop the deets on this little gem. This is our "official" dim sum option for weeknight take out. Personal favorites for me are always going to be the salt/pepper wings, the steamed pork buns, the crystal shrimp dumplings, and the scallion pancakes. My wife loves the soup dumplings, the shu mai. We could eat those dishes every week until we die pretty much, they are reliably good and comforting. Particular shout out on the pork buns though because they are just the absolute best consistency from a filling/bun standpoint. Soft, pillowy, they are glorious. I used to get pork buns from Good Mong Kok Bakery, but tbh, this is about 10x better. The soup dumpling also are quite good, I like the spicy ones but the black truffle is defintely worth it for the occasional splurge. They give you the red vinegar for it too which not all places do. Everything one needs to enjoy. I haven't been in person so I couldn't speak for the service or the location, but if you want a spot that delivers on time and often includes items for free (the pork buns are now free for orders over $50), this is great value and just great food. Chefs kiss.

The staff were friendly and super prompt about clearing empty plates and refilling our tea whenever we signaled it was done, which is always great as the dishes just get on coming! We ordered a bunch of dishes to share, and several really stood out. The spicy tendon was fantastic, shredded paper thin and swimming in a classic spicy sauce. The spicy lamb dumplings were another highlight, with an incredibly thin wrapper and a super flavorful and not gamey at all lamb filling. I also loved the stir fried rice cakes, which were sliced thin enough to avoid that overly chewy texture, and the stir fried noodles Shanghai style were classic and simple in the best way, with big chunks of cabbage and meat and just executed really (the chefs clearly have some serious wok skills!). Not everything we ordered was an absolute knockout as the vegetable dishes could use a bit more flavor and seasoning, but everything overall was good, and the portions across the board were very generous. The desserts were a last-minute decision and I am so glad we went for them. The lava custard buns were fluffy and amazing, with a molten salted egg custard inside, and the sesame balls had a satisfyingly crispy exterior that gave way to a perfectly chewy interior and sweet red bean filling. The value here is also excellent. We left absolutely stuffed and spent around $30 per person, which felt like a great deal for how much food we got and how much we enjoyed it. Highly recommend!

The Peking duck was the most disappointing, we had such high hope for how it looked and how nicely it was setup. However the duck was cold and the skin had zero crisp. Some pieces of skin was basically inedible, very tough and impossible to chew through almost like leather or plastic. Don't know how they managed that. Go-to spot for a simple, casual catchup meal with friends…read more The Scallion noodles come with egg noodles tossed in a light soy-based sauce, topped with scallions and a friend egg. The sauce base isn't overpowering and pairs well with the XLB and dumplings. Of the Xian style dumplings, the lamb is my favorite. I've tried the pork before, but something about the filling tasted off. The dumplings are wrapped in a thick, egg-based hand kneaded dough that gives them a homemade feel. Steering clear of the pork XLB, the tom yum has an incredibly savory soup base with the eye-catching red wrappers. Couldn't quite taste the coconut broth, but was still equally rich and savory. Would definitely order this and the lamb dumplings again. My biggest hesitation about coming back is the recent price hike (between Feb/Mar and July 2026). Compared to just a few months ago: Lamb dumplings: $12.50 to $15 String beans: $10.50 to $14 Scallion noodles: $10.50 to $14 Tom Yum XLB: $16 to $17 Small increases are understandable, but nearly a 50% jump for noodles and string beans are hard to justify. The food is as expected, but with these prices, it'll be harder to choose Dumpling Time over other nearby options!

I walked into the restaurant about 45 minutes before closing time at 9:30 PM and several other diners came in after I was seated. The unsettled weather made the people hungry for dumplings. Bao is warm and woody and serene on the inside, a great counterpoint to the bustle of Valencia at every hour. Upon entering there is a large window looking on to the kitchen prep area where culinary experts are often at work constructing the food diners later enjoy on their plates. Tonight a couple of wizards were in the process of making chicken potstickers. Even being vegetarian, just seeing how the dumplings and other items are made is like seeing secrets being shared. I love it and it sets the vibe for the restaurant. My order consisted of the steamed vegetarian buns and sautéed string beans. The buns come out beautifully presented and taste even better: the bun itself is just slightly sweet and that sweetness adds an amazing dimension to the chopped fresh vegetables inside. Can't tell you what any of these veggies are individually and I don't care, they are so good. Next came the sautéed string beans and the sear on the beans themselves was perfect and smoky and delicious. The crispness of the sautee makes the string beans a lovely pairing with the soft yummy of the steamed buns. Last came the sesame balls as a sweet meal ending. I love donuts and fresh-made sesame balls are similar to a donut hole just with a filling that is actually food and so sweetly tasty. The outer fry was crisp and the insides absolutely perfect. Three dishes, all fantastic, and I walk home happy and thankful to Bao for a great simple meal!

This is slightly more upscale Chinese/dumplings/dim sum than I'm used to (I usually go to Chinatown.) I like their - Steamed Sweet Red Bean Bao, Steamed Sweet Egg Custard Bao, (very Instagrammable and not overly-sweet.) - Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings. Pretty good - Sichuan Xiao Long Bao and Shanghai Xiao Long Bao: must-get! - shiu mai and har gow: my must-gets at any dumpling/dim sum place. Interior is polished and clean. Nice to bike to or go to before or after Dolores Park. Service is fine. I keep coming back!

Quick and tasty spot. Came here to split a siu mai while waiting for my order from another spot…read more The cashier was super friendly and the food came out quickly. Heads up that this is mostly a takeaway spot and they only have 1-2 small tables. The siu mai was fairly big and I liked that the order came with a bunch of sauces- chili oil, soy sauce, and a hot sauce. As a big sauce fan, I appreciated the selection! I'll be back to try most of their selection.

I've only ordered dim sum from here through Too Good to Go (2g2g). Like their Chinatown location,…read moreI find the dim sum to be oily. But overall, it's good. The baked bbq pork buns are sweet with a decent amount of filling. The deep fried dumpling is plump, juicy, and crunchy. The shrimp and chive dumplings are my favorite. It's full of shrimp with a slightly thicker skin, which I think adds a nice chewiness. The veggie egg rolls were okay. I personally wouldn't order those, even if I was craving them. The spare ribs had a really nice savory flavor from the sauce. The egg tarts were okay. I need to note that these bags are leftovers from the day, so they're not as fresh. But they held up the next day so I was able to stretch 2 meals out of them. I can't comment on service since these bags are only for pick up. But they quickly provide the bags once the window open. And it's a small space, with maybe 2 tables. So this place is probably best for to-go orders. Their 2g2g bags have more variety than their Chinatown location. Not sure how many dim sum options there are in the Mission, but I would go here if I was in the area and craving a shrimp and chive dumpling.
