This is a bit of a hike for us but overall, I would say it was worth it. The six of us dined in on a Sunday evening. The restaurant is spacious and there were plenty of seating at 5:30 PM. It was noticeably busier at 6:30 PM and there was a short line at the door. We ordered the fried wonton wraps, shrimp wonton with noodle soup, shrimp wonton and beef tripe with noodle soup, Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce and noodle, beef chow ho fun, and Seven Treasure's 554. We have also dined in for lunch on a Monday at 12:30 pm. The restaurant was probably at a 40% capacity and it was a full house by 1:30 pm. We ordered our usuals but we also tried something new. The black peppered beef chow ho fun was particularly appealing. The chow ho fun was pan-seared and not overly oily. We would definitely order this again! Wonton Gourmet gets 5 stars for the food but 1 star for the service. We've been here many times, and just about every time we get the same waitress. If you've been here, you'd know exactly who I'm taking about. Not very friendly, speaks extremely fast, and often doesn't seem to fully pay attention to the order. Case in point: on our last visit, my wife ordered beef stew with wontons, but the dish came out with just wontons--no beef. When we pointed out the mistake, the waitress returned with a small bowl of beef stew on the side. Now I'm no chef, but you can't just pour a small bowl of beef stew into already-made wonton soup and suddenly have it become the dish that was originally ordered. The beef stew soup base is completely different from regular wonton soup. My wife was hungry and didn't want to wait longer for a remake, so she just ate it. You would think that after a mistake like that they might comp the dish or offer a small discount, but instead they charged us extra for the small bowl of beef stew. I honestly couldn't help but laugh. That said, it's hard to find a really good bowl of wontons in the suburbs, so we'll probably still be back--just hoping the mediocre service eventually improves. Not to be all negative--the food is really good. Our go-to is the wonton noodle soup with the flat wide noodles. Their sesame chicken is my kids' favorite along with the fried wontons. The place is spacious, and they can connect a bunch of rectangular tables together to make a long table. Somehow, the place always found us tables when we visited. Food is usually decent and pricing is reasonable. In our last visit, every staff member was friendly except for one middle-age woman. It could be she's having a rough day, or it's just her style of interacting with people. However, a server could really affect the whole experience of the meal. We had ordered fried noodles, Chinese Broccoli and other dishes to share. As usual, we always ordered at least two or more orders of Fried Tofu (with a crispy skin and silky-smooth inside), as they are so good that they are everyone's favorite! Last time, for our individual meals, I ordered a Noodles with Shrimp Wonton & Beef Stew, while my husband ordered a Noodles with Shrimp Wonton and Fish Cakes. He had forgotten that "fish cakes" were processed fish cakes instead of fresh ones. While the bowls of noodles were decent and tasty, the shrimp wonton only had pork inside but no shrimp! Last time, another disappointment was that they didn't have congee. I wish that they actually add congee back to their menu. Even though they have congee on their website menu now, if you click on it, it does not show anything. A Cantonese restaurant like Wonton Gourmet would typically serve "congee, fun, noodles, and rice". Without congee, it's not perfect. It's nice not having to go to Chinatown for Cantonese food however, my first experience here left much to be desired. I ordered the duck and shrimp wonton noodle. The four pieces of a duck I got only one piece was the meat portion the other three were the bony portion. There was a couple of wontons. They were crispy however it seemed to lack taste, and there was an off note that I couldn't put my finger on. The noodles were great perfectly chewy and cooked perfectly. Service was so so nobody came to refill the water until we ask at the end of the meal. Won ton noodle soup with barbecue pork. Same recipe as in the chinatown now defunct Seven Tresures restaurant. Unfortunately, the service is not the same. I'll explain in a minute. It is a 45 minute on highway from my home to here. But I was yearning for the soup! We weren't seated right away and employees just passed us up. Finally we were able to be seated, and please note it was not busy. Upon seating we waited a while before water or even a menu came to us. Not cool again, as it was not busy. Finally we asked about the soup and how we had been getting it in Chinstown for over 30+ years and so missed the soup. It didn't seem to matter to the waitress as I dont think she cared. The recipe is the exact recipe as this is the cousin of the old chinatown restaurant, (Chinatown owner let us know that he would be sharing his recipe here with his cousin). Again, we order soup and my partner ordered with fish ball dumplings instead of pork as he doesn't consume pork. They said it was fine. Unfortunately when we recieved the soup, his had beef ball dumplings and not fish ball dumplings. When questioned they said "oh we ran out of fish ball dumplings'. That's fine and dandy but don't assume he also eats beef. It was jarring that they didn't really care and I was saddened on this. As Chinatown employees always treated us like family. I still got my soup correct and it was perfection. It took me back to Chinatown and that made me smile. Unfortunately due to this fish ball dumplings situation, I have to drop my scores as I believe honesty and Integrity are key to successful businesse's. Would I come back for the soup? We had lunch on a Saturday recently. There were lots of employees and the place was packed however everything was chaotic as each employee didn't seem to have a specific role. One employee was hostess, waiting tables, doing carry out, etc. We weren't greeted by anyone and the old lady that was up front at the time chose to seat another party even though we were there first. When you spend most of your life visiting Seven Treasures in Chinatown, there's a void to be filled when the restaurant closes down. We recently went to Wonton Gourmet with our family for dinner and looking at the menu was so nostalgic. Wonton gourmet has its own parking lot with plenty of parking spaces. When you walk into, the inside has wallpapers of photos I believe of Hong Kong and the street markets that really added to the ambience. We were quickly shown to our tables where they brought out water. Our waiter came by and took our order shortly after and our food came out quickly after that. I had been craving my 554 meal, but I loved it with a runny egg so it was more like porridge. It absolutely hit the spot. My parents and my siblings got the wonton soup with extra shrimp dumplings on the side and rave that it's the best they've had since their favorite restaurant closed. It's been well almost a decade since my last visit ! Well worth trying ! It was extremely busy for a Sunday evening early dinner time (4-6ish). Extensive menu but would highly recommend and suggest trying their signature dishes listed on their glass wall inside. I really enjoy their BBQ pork dishes ESPECIALLY their CHOW FUN. This is the worst Chinese restaurant i have ever been to. I have been going to Chicago area Chinese restaurants for 30 years. This place is an insult. Overall Thoughts: The "sister restaurant" of the recently closed 7 Treasures restaurant in Chicago Chinatown, Wonton Gourmet serves up dishes reminiscent of 7 Treasures such as their signature 554 dish and wonton noodle soup. Unfortunately, they don't have the classic 7 Treasures meat combo dish with crispy pork belly, which was among my favorite things to order there. The prices are also higher than 7 Treasures, though still very reasonable. The service is quick and friendly, and the interior is spacious and nicely decorated. Located next to the 606 bus stop (which departs out of the Rosemont blue line stop), it's convenient to visit even if you're coming here without a car from the city. Wonton Gourmet is a hidden gem in the suburbs, it's the closest to ChinaTown restaurants in the suburbs as you'll find. For reference this restaurant is about a 40 min drive from home, which is closer than ChinaTown, but we typically wouldn't drive this far for a restaurant regularly unless it's really good. We try to go at least once a month to either dine in or take-out. The restaurant is clean and comfortable, but not specifically modern or updated, but it works. The servers are attentive and fast. The food is prepared and comes out quickly as well. In my opinion, if you're familiar with or aware of the general customer service and style of service you'd get at most restaurants at ChinaTown, Wonton Gourmet is a hybrid, better service, more attentive than what you'd expect. It adjusts well for suburbans that might be more accustom to more typical chain restaurants in the suburbs. The food is great, full flavored and always prepared quickly and served immediately when ready. They bring out dishes when ready, they don't wait to bring everything out at one time generally. We always order Kung pao chicken and really like their chow fun and noodle soups, which is what they're know for. My family came here on a Monday night and the place was packed! Both with tables and carry out orders. The place is larger inside with and open seating concept, so it can get a bit loud. This place is your Hong Kong Style "Tea Restaurant." They have classics like cha siu, wonton noodle soup, and all the noodles galore. They also have some Chinese American Dishes as well to cater to the American palate. The Beef and Chinese Broccoli (Gai Lan) chow fun and the Black Bean Beef Chow Fun were great! There used to be a restaurant in Schaumburg called Hong Kong Cafe, which fulfilled my craving of Cantonese noodles and small dishes. Since it closed, I haven't been to find something similar until Wonton Gourmet. It's generally fast, so you almost have to know what you want the moment you sit down. My favorite dishes so far include roast duck and shrimp wonton noodle (soup), black bean chow fun (the fun noodle was crispy!), and iced honey lemon tea was refreshing for a hot summer day.
