I came here with a group of friends, our main goal the khachapuri, but everything about the food and experience was fantastic. The restaurant has a very open, warm vibe, very spacious. We had boorsok for our appetizer, fried dough bites that reminded me of funnel cake without sugar, and there were a lot! I had the strawberry mojito drink, and it was fantastic, really tasting of fresh fruit with many mint leaves inside. The khachapuri was extraordinary. They do imeruli style, round and similar to a pizza, the crust beautifully blistered and the cheese thick with a wonderful pull. One of my friends hadn't had khachapuri before and is now a convert. We also had boso lagman, with hand-pulled noodles and beef, and big manty dumplings with flavorful meatballs inside. I requested we get a slice of honey cake, too, and that was a perfect finish to the meal. Sweet but not overkill, and really tasted like honey, graham crackers, and cream. I had previously tried Karavan at the taste of Des Plaines and recently had my first experience eating there in person. We went during lunch and were promptly seated. The decor offered great ambiance! In order to try a couple of items my sister and I decided to split the laghman and eggplant salad. The laghman was excellent with fresh hand-pulled noodles. I appreciated that they split the dish in the kitchen for us. The eggplant salad was a good portion to supplement the noodles. But points of caution that they are fried and have an almost sweet and sour sauce on top which for me was a little heavy. Overall quick and efficient service for a sit down lunch during the work week. They also appeared to have an extensive drink menu of different lemonade and coffee that I would be interested to try next time. read more

I cannot think of enough superlatives to describe my experience! I'm going to start with the wait staff and servers. They were so respectful, kind and helpful with recommendations and patient to explain. The decor was exotic with several large planters in the middle of the dining area. The window treatments had ethnic designs luminated with stringed lighting. One thing that stood out that seemed a bit out of place was a large screen by the front door advertising a Fit & Fight gym endorsed by Khabib Nurmagonedov. The fairly prominent screen only showed advertisements for the gym. The food was AMAZING. Deep, robust flavors. The juices of the meat seeped into the rice and vegetables. The assorted festive skewers that had many different types of meat were hearty and plentiful. The spices were deliciously aromatic. It was a very hearty meal. The teas came out in beautiful carafes over a tea light candle. We tried the Peach (sweet, slightly floral, tangy) and Tashkent Teas (blend of black & green tea with citrus rinds ). We went for lunch on a Friday and we were seated immediately. The customers were coming and going steadily and the environment was quiet enough to hold a conversation easily. This was our first time dining at this restaurant and felt welcomed. Our server, Islam Z, was very pleasant and helpful with explaining menu items. He kindly offered suggestions for our food selection and enjoyed all the items that we ordered. The top dish was the eggplant salad, although all the dishes were deliciously prepared. Had the breakfast today. Hostress had no smile on her face. :) It feels like unwelcoming. I normally give a very generous tip. However, it is a breakfast buffet place, and it automatically added a 18% tip to the bill. It is a buffet place. The customers get our own food, and servers brought us drinks. Having been to Karavan twice now, once four months ago and one earlier this year, I'm happy to say that both experiences warrant a 5 star review. First, the service is stellar and the staff is very patient and willing to answer any questions you have about the food. This was quite important because while there are English descriptions, this type of central Asian cuisine wasn't one that I've had much experience in. Their "nan" for example, literally means bread and isn't the same flatbread type "naan" as from Indian restaurants. Food/drink: Classic variety kattama - similar to Chinese green onion flaky pastries Alat Samsy Beef - basically a samosa Alat Samsy Chicken Cheese - basically a samosa Tom Yum soup - reminds me of bun bo hue broth from Vietnamese pho restaurants Eggplant salad (highly recommend) Boorsok - simple fried bread but somehow so addicting Boso Lagman - stir fried noodles with meat and veggies Nan - basically just bread Lamp Chops Shashlik Berry Chai (highly recommend) Mango Lemonade Honey Cake From a drink perspective, I absolutely love the berry chai tea. It has a subtle sweetness to it (I think from the honey) without being overwhelming and leaves you feeling refreshed. On top of that, while it looks a bit pricey on the menu, they give you a sizable pitcher and you can get more hot water as a refill. They were nice enough to even add more honey later on to maintain that level of subtle sweetness. I also ended up ordering their mango lemonade, which while a bit more standard to what you'd expect, is also very solid. From a food perspective, I enjoyed every dish and there wasn't anything I didn't like. The standout though has to be the eggplant salad. It's a standout not because I like eggplant...I actually really don't like eggplant, yet the way they made this dish, I couldn't stop eating it. Everything else was also very enjoyable and I don't have reservations about ordering any of these dishes again. The only thing is that their nan is basically just bread (which the servers would tell you the same thing). That's the only thing I probably wouldn't order again since your calories are better spent on the rest of their delicious food. read more

We were in the area and decided to try Karavan instead of the usual (A Thousand Tales, Grand Istanbul, etc.). The parking lot was packed, but thankfully we found a spot near the trash bins. Inside felt warm and cozy; the decor and tables were nice. The plates, glasses, and silverware in leather pouches were also nice. Service was friendly; our server's name was Askot (sp?). We ordered the Gulchatai Shorpo soup, manty (dumplings), and lamb skewer w/ wok-fried veggies on the side. The soup kind of looked plain, but the broth was full of flavor; there was a reasonable amount of meat in there. The manty was pretty good. The lamb kabobs were tasty, although in hindsight we should have requested medium-rare instead of medium-well. The wok-fried veggies were superb. Pricing was a little high, but on par with other Uzbek restaurants we've been to like Milliy, Chinor, and Anjir. Karavan is definitely a nice addition to the slew of Uzbek restaurants in the Chicagoland area. read more

WOW! Truly a five star experience. My husband got the classic lemonade and I got a matcha latte with strawberry (not on the menu) which were both amazing and fresh. For food, we got the nomad combo 1, manty, and smoked beef wrap. I forgot to take pictures but they were all so delicious! The meats were our favorite which were tender and flavorful. Amazing experience at Karavan this morning evening! My friends and I needed dinner after a convention in Romeoville and some had been to karavan before and had only good things to say. First of all I loved the decor! Feels like you've been instantly transported to another land. We arrive early for our reservation but they were able to get a table ready for our party of 8. Food: I had heard great things about the lagman (think a hearty lo mein but with a savory sauce with a kick and homemade hand pulled noodles! We really wanted to try the manty (a dumpling) with pumpkin but they had run out cause it's such a popular item so we got the beef instead with was delicious! For the table my friends ordered the eggplant salad. I loved it form the moment it hit the table. It smelled so good! It's a little crisped with a sweet and sour sauce, fresh tomatoes, and herbs! It was so good I ordered a second one to go. We also tried the borsook think little pillowy pastries served with a sour cream sauce. Our server Askot was super knowledgeable and thorough with explaining the menu and all the dishes I loved learning about the central Asian culture through these flavorful dishes. Lamb kabobs were great we had the roasted potatoes with dill it great light tomato sauce on the side. The panna cotta was wonderful as well loved the top layer with the passion fruit and lime. Behind Karavan's nondescript exterior is a welcoming, exquisitely decorated restaurant with delicious food. Since we were not familiar with Central Asian cuisine, our server patiently described the dishes to us, and he seemed genuinely eager for us to enjoy the meal. I enjoyed everything we ordered, but the standout was the eggplant salad! Even those in our party that dislike eggplant thought it was outstanding! The eggplant is lightly fried and tossed in a sweet and tangy sauce. I'm not sure if I would call it a "salad," but it would be perfect over rice. The berry chai, served in a large pot and infused with berries and citrus, also perfectly complemented our meal. We worked our way through several carb-y appetizers: kattama (reminded us of the Chinese scallion pancakes - so crispy!), alat samsy (we liked the beef one!), and naan (plain bread). Went here for the first time today. My friend, who was born in Russia many years ago, felt right at home here. He said the borscht was just like his mom and grandma used to make. Due to cancer, I have not had much of an appetite lately. I decided to try the Oroma and it was really delicious. Very savory and light. I was able to eat 2/3 of it and brought the rest home for later. The homemade bread was exceptional and a "must" if you like bread.
