I went here with a group of friends for lunch on a weekday. One of us had contacted the restaurant days earlier to make sure they would be able to accommodate a group of our size. They said yes, but I'll get to that in a moment. The dining room is modern and upscale and the food is Hong Kong-style cuisine with a focus on old school Cantonese. We were disappointed to observe that the vast menu offers neither lunch specials nor lunch-size portions. The carryout/online menu lists both small and large portions, however everything on the dine-in menu--including apps--comes only supersize. Ditto the soups. There was only one server for the entire restaurant, which was filled. Apart from being completely overwhelmed, she was woefully inefficient. It took her 20+ minutes to serve canned sodas. Then, the kitchen churned out apps and entrees in no particular order. Of two orders of egg foo young ordered as entrees, the first one arrived before any other dish, and the second was nowhere to be seen until nearly everyone had finished their entrees. Requests for missing items had to be repeated several times. At least our food arrived hot. Noodle soups and noodle dishes seem to be the most popular items here. Everything else was hit-or-miss. Our entrees ranged from excellent (soups, volcano shrimp) to so-so. My Mongolian beef, sans 'styrofoam' noodles and swimming in a watery sauce, was somewhere in the middle. My egg roll appetizer, which did not arrive until after I was done eating my entrée, was mediocre. Two orders of pan-fried pot stickers went uneaten because their wrappers were doughy, tough and overcooked. The crab Rangoon was a meh. Chinatown quality not. We were not served tea or fortune cookies. At the end of the meal, we asked repeatedly for enough containers and bags for everyone in our party. But for some unfathomable reason our server would bring only a couple containers at a time instead of all in one trip. Duh. read more

We ended up here because our flight got rerouted and the airline put us in a hotel across the street from Wonton Gourmet. The parking lot was empty and there weren't many people in the restaurant. It wasn't the best looking place when you want to describe ambience. It seems like it might be a family owned business. We ordered the General Tso's chicken, orange chicken and chow mein. We also ordered 3 egg rolls. The food was cooked fresh and very good. We absolutely loved our food. The only thing is my son was confused if he liked the chow mein or the lo mein, and turns out he ordered the wrong one. So he was upset about the chow mein, but it I thought it tasted good. 12 years later and I find myself craving this place since I took over a decade long hiatus -- not purposefully, just more out of sight out of mind as life changed and I moved around. Anyways, I recently started to come back to this old timer of a place this year and since then, we have had been here 5 times and will probably be back before year's end. There is something so nostalgic and unbeatable about their shrimp wonton noodle soup. That, and the Yang Chow fried rice (sans soy sauce), the 554 rice dish with the most tender & flavorful BBQ pork you'll ever have, the tangy hot and sour soup, their fried shrimp wonton actually have chunks of shrimps you can taste, and even their chili oil is on point! (And yes, you can purchase it to go). We come here not for the fancy ambiance but for the true authentic Chinese cuisine. I literally would go through periods of craving their Yang Chow fried rice & Shrimp Won Ton noodle soup like no other. And trust me, I have tried to find replaceable dishes, or ones that are called of the same names and nothing has compared. I simply need to go back to this place in order those exact dishes. We've already celebrated at least two family birthdays here, and I imagine there will be more to come. On this particular visit, I ordered the 554 rice dish because I saw two people at the adjacent table to us had it on their plate and it looks so appetizing that I had to ask what it was. I took a chance, and it was worth the risk because my whole family finished it-- pretty much licked it clean. We now have another favorite dish to add to our palette's repertoire, it has become a staple of our order. Service comes out fast for us when we visit, they were also very nice to let us cut our own cake for a birthday celebration. I asked for a knife to cut the cake, and they brought out extra plates and forks. They offer free oolong tea as well. And the prices are reasonable here for the portions, as of 2023. We were able to feed a bigger group here for less money than when we go for Dim Sum which if they ever offer, I would need to move next door. I hope they continue to keep prices affordable and food quality high here. Fun fact, they are also a sister restaurant of Seven Treasures in Chinatown. I've been here 3 times now with my parents and it always hits the spot! My family lives in downtown Chicago and we sometimes travel all the way up here just to go to lunch here! The place is very spacious with large tables to accommodate big parties and also smaller booths for the small family (like us) :). I highly recommend the bbq pork. It is sweet, but not too sweet and is super tender. I could eat a whole plate of it! We are always fighting on who gets the last piece. The other thing we rave about is the Chinese broccoli. It is cooked to perfection and goes well with any of the dishes. They offer a variety of noodle options, but my favorite are definitely the chow mein crispy noodles and the braised noodles. I hate to give a bad review of any establishment but we went for a birthday party and this establishment was the requested restaurant of the birthday girl. The service was not great - some of the food was overcooked - the drinks in the tin cups were not good and then there were the extra uninvited guests aka: bugs in the booths and the workers would come with napkins and kill them and take them away with no apologies and then we made it thru dinner to find more crawling across the table. we left our leftovers and didnt even open the cake and sent the cake home with the birthday girl as we didnt want to have a bug get into the cake. OK I had high high hopes for this place as it took over the 555 dish from the famous restaurant in Chinatown. When we walked in it was almost all Asian people eating there, which is always a good sign. Unfortunately, that's the best thing I can say the food was not good. There was way too much barbecued pork on my 555 dish overseasoned and fatty. We brought home egg foo yong, which was ok and fried rice, which was edible. A not so hidden gem located in Des Plaines, IL. Alot of familiar favorites like 554 (bbq pork with 2 fried eggs over a bed of rice with soy sauce) as well as the popular BBQ and shrimp wonton noodle soup. Service is a little slow, especially on days that they are packed. But once you order your food, it comes out pretty fast. Our go to dish is the beef chow fun with chinese broccoli. Make sure to ask for the noods to be extra crispy. Its a game changer!! We also enjoy the soy sauce noodles. The beef with tofu was a little on the salty side, but eating it with rice helps tone the saltiness down. i definitely had to chug a few cups of water immediately after. When I called they informed me that I only ordered the beef stew and I should have informed them beef stew noodles. We had lunch at this place which had been here for many years which previously was a Browns Chicken. Anyways, we got seated and waited right away. Service was very good, and the food have improved tremendously. Maybe new owners or a new cook. We ordered pot stickers for starters and it was huge plump and delicious. It's been a while since I went to Wonton Gourmet and overall I was pleasantly surprised at all the changes they've made since I last visited. Overall I feel like this restaurant is more in line now with the look, atmosphere, service, and food of what you expect from the classier Chinese restaurants. It's great that you can enjoy authentic Cantonese flavors without travelling all the way to Chinatown, especially with harder to find items like noodle soup and congee which are less common in the suburbs. Compared to before, I also find that the food quality is also better -- definitely less salty and oily with better ingredients. The BBQ pork here has a nice sauce, not too sweet and good to mix in with rice. The pieces of meat I got were a little on the lean side and cut a little thin but still enjoyable. The Yang Chow fried rice was a little light on wok-hay from seared egg, but the generous amounts of BBQ pork and pieces of shrimp did help to give it a good level of savory flavor and fullness. The orange beef was quite saucy and deep fried nicely. Though it didn't retain its crispiness for very long, the flavor was still evident in the batter which did well in helping the thick orange sauce stick to each piece. The sauce was probably equal bits salty and sweet, which I liked, with a little hint of tangerine peel in the sauce. The beef was fairly tender and had a nice light flavor to it. The seafood chow fun mixes the best of the saucy seafood chow mein dish with the addictive crispy chow fun noodles that I love here. It had generous amount of seafood for the price, with good large shrimp. The cabbage and carrots did a good job of adding some earthiness to the dish, making it a nice light alternative to the usual gan chow beef fun. Overall, a quick and reasonably priced alternative to heading into Chinatown with fairly good food. read more

Wonton Gourmet is a great authentic Asian restaurant. My husband and I came here to meet a friend. When we arrived there were plenty of tables available. We ordered the BBQ ribs as an appetizer. The BBQ ribs had a flavorful sauce and was very tender. For entrées we ordered the orange beef, yang chow fried rice, and seafood chow fun. The orange beef had a crispy, crunchy batter, in a mildly spicy sauce. The meat was tender and tasty. The seafood chow fun had large vegetables, big pieces of shrimp and other seafood. The sauce in this dish was very sweet and savory and has a comfort food feel to it. The large and sweet crispy noodle was cooked in a way that I have never seen before. The noodle was laid in strips at the bottom of the dish. It was a struggle to get it apart to eat but it was well worth the effort. The yang chow fried rice was lite on sauce but I enjoyed it. The rice was rich and fluffy and the fried egg added to the dish. Overall, Wonton Gourmet is a solid choice for great Asian food. I highly recommend it. read more

We went for lunch and ordered egg rolls, crab Rangoon, house fried rice, braised noodles with roasted duck and sesame chicken. I would not only order all of it again, but I noticed a TON of people in the restaurant got noodle soup (which came out in a huge bowl and hot) so next time I'm ordering that. The service was fast and professional! We had multiple people bringing out food to us and it looks like they turn around tables really quickly. We travel a little farther to get here, but there is plenty of free parking in the lot when we arrive. The food is so tasty! Egg rolls are very good. Wonton Gourmet is similar to the old seven treasures in Chinatown. I believe is the son-in-law of the owner of seven treasures they are known for homemade thin noodles and wontons. The ambience is OK. I always get the barbecue pork, with shrimp wonton it's a big bowl of soup with those homemade noodles, barbecue pork, green onions, and shrimp wonton balls. Always a great spot! My family (including ALL of my extended family which equaled about 20+ of us) decided to come here after my little sister's graduation for a celebration. Absolutely amazing experience per usual. They had placed the tables together to make it easy for us to come as one big group. When we ordered the food, the waiter was extremely helpful in helping my mother with how many plates we needed for such a big group. The food was fantastic as we were eating family style. The portions were incredible and we definitely had leftovers. Everything is always great! I had low expectations coming to a place in the middle of Des Plaines, IL, but I was pleasantly surprised by the authenticity of the food and it's flavors. But the attitude of one middle-aged woman with dark hair, her attitude was very rude and this is still an understatement! My friend raved about this place and how he would come here for lunch when he worked around here and how authentic it was so he dragged myself and another person here. The prices here were pretty good, less than 10 bucks for congee-which I didn't share and the wonton soup which we did share was decent. It's definitely an upgrade over a strip mall Chinese take out place and serves some more authentic Cantonese dishes and not just Orange Chicken. However, my friend, the one who recommended this place suddenly had to cut our outing short. Whatever it was that he ate needed to be evacuated IMMEDIATELY and it was such a bad one that he needed/wanted the comfort and security of his own bathroom and not a public one. I hate Chicago and the traffic. Therefore I go here due to proximity. This is Chinatown without the Chinatown! It's great! Ample parking bc they have their own parking lot, easy to find, easy to get out of as well even though it's on a main and busy road and usually always busy. I forgot to take pictures of the wonton soup but our standard orders include the wonton soup beef broccoli chow fun and beef broccoli chow mein yang Chou Fried race and this time we ordered the Szechuan chicken. Potstickers here aren't bad either as well as the congee. This is our go to spot as a family for Chinese food when we do not want to fight the traffic nor drive the distance to Chinatown.
