The oldest home built in Plano, Texas was built in 1867. This shop inside the home is named The Wooden Spoon and sells Scandinavian candies and gifts. The lady who helped us was as sweet as could be. The gift shop is located on the first floor of the home and had everything from candy, wooden horse toys, Santa figures, books and more. We both bought Swedish candy and I was able to sit in the original owners rocking chair. Mike B. bought a lot of delicious sweets. Got a some products as a Christmas gift from Wooden Spoon from shipped to me from a friend. I live in Prosper TX and they are in Plano, I know it's not far but some perishable items just in a box with some Ice bags, no cooler? Also the box was packed like a kindergartner did it, horrible! On top of that many items were expired! Highly recommend you do not use them for gifts shipped, maybe the store is better but don't get stuff shipped! I see great reviews, we had a zero star experience as the recipient of shipping. At least in the store you can see if the stuff you are buying is expired. read more

I was so excited to find a Scandinavian shop selling goods from the Nordic countries here in DFW! The women here are so friendly! The owner is from Stockholm. The self-serve candy selection is just like the ones you seen in Sweden! They have all the gummy candies that I wished I bought more of when I was over there. This place is a true gem! The shop is very quaint and has a cozy feel. I visited here over the weekend to pick up some Swedish candy and was not disappointed. They have ample parking in the front of the store. They have a good variety of sweet treats and other imported Swedish goods. It would be a great place to buy gifts for friends and family. They do have a cash only policy for purchases less than $15 dollars. It's not difficult to meet the threshold as the goods are a little on the pricey side but well worth it. read more

I visited the Wooden Spoon a few Saturdays ago to see the place, artwork, and grab some Scandinavian candy. The house itself has a very interesting history, and a lot of historical artifacts. Most products apart from the candy are fairly expensive. There were a handful of options candy-wise for me, and I grabbed a bag and filled it with things I wanted to try. My reasoning for removing a star is that only after we filled up our bags (they directed us to the candy section upon our arrival), were we told that we needed to spend at least $15 to use a credit card. My candy came to $8, and I didn't have cash, so this forces customers to either buy more candy or find something else in the store. This wasn't stated on the website, or told to us until we filled our bags, and knowing that ahead of time would have been appreciated. The candy itself was ok - a ton of hits and a ton of misses. They even have classes on making traditional lefse, krumkaker, and rose mailing painting. They have lots of Swedish Gävlebocken to choose from. I'm kicking myself. I don't live in Plano, but go there at least monthly, maybe more. I honestly think I stopped at Wooden Spoon not long after they opened in 1988. Not sure why I haven't been in since. Maybe it made me too homesick. I was an exchange student for 6 months with 6 families in 1987 in Sweden through the International 4-H Youth Exchange and had the time of my life. I love all things Sverige - well, not the caviar and lutefisk - but everything else. I digress. We walked into the shop and I was almost overwhelmed with the feeling of stepping back to 1987 with the familiar images, products, and the lovely woman behind the counter greeting me with that familiar Swedish accent. I literally fought back happy tears. We visited, then I decided to scour the entire shop before making my purchases. It was almost overwhelming the flood of memories - little things I had forgotten, big things burned into my heart that I frequently still think of and everything in between. They have all things Scandinavian, my Finnish host mother who married a Swede would be happy as well, but I was on the Sweden item hunt. It was a challenge to narrow it down, but I brought home two trays, a trivet, note cards, strawberry rhubarb jam, black currant jam, Leksands Original Rye (triangle), glogg, an autographed cookbook written by the owner of this lovely establishment, and cookies that this sweet owner baked. The Gingerbread cookies and sugar cookies were worth the stop alone - and the recipes are in her book. It was a hot day, and as my husband reminded me, we can come back. It's still summer and we had other places to go, so I didn't buy all the things I wanted - including Farmer Cheese, meatballs, and yellow pea soup - for the record, I don't like pea soup, but I did like this in 1987, so I want to try it again. So many other things - mixes and chocolates and books and towels and I could go on forever. They have so many wonderful things. This morning I had my rye with real butter and the strawberry rhubarb jam. Upon the first bite, I won't lie, a little tear snuck its way out. And now I realize I have the means to have this much more often. I've seen others say it is pricey - I hope they take into account this stuff isn't being made around the corner and isn't available in every store close by. It's a small business with big hearts and quality foods and gifts/items. I think you get what you pay for, and it's worth every penny. The customer service is top notch as well. Even if you've never been to Scandinavia, the experience would be great for anyone who loves something different. Might be the closest one ever gets to a place I fell in love with almost 40 years ago, worth the trip to Plano for sure. read more

Yes, they have Swedish candy and they know you're probably here for the candy but this charming little shop offers so much more. The building is cozy and quaint with a cute art gallery on the second floor. The art is super affordable and unique. There's gifts, figurines, posters, and other cute trinkets in the gift shop. The food section is great, lots of teas and jams, tinned fish, condiments, and, of course, candy. The selection of Swedish candy is fantastic, they had all my favorites. If you're a fan of Bon Bon in NYC, I highly recommend stopping in to shop locally as they carry a huge selection candy here for a great price! read more

The only place in the Metroplex that carries Swedish Anchovies and other Scandinavian delicacies. My favorite and only local Swedish store, you can also get some Norwegian stuff if you're nice! When is the shop owner and she will nondiscriminatorally help you out with anything Finnish, Danish, Norwegian, or Swedish; this is the perfect place to go right before your favorite holiday celebration she will have everything you need. You can get your favorite Scandinavian candies, baked goods, dry goods as well as some fun crafts and they teach classes in different languages and some arts. read more

This is a great place to go to when I have a craving for Swedish food items or other Scandinavian food. They have a pretty nice little selection of cheese but we're not talking Central Market type of variety but you probably won't find these types of cheese at Central Market. Vasterbotten cheese is my favorite by far. If they would start selling They have lot's of other types of foods and also souvenirs. They take special orders for Scandinavian ham prepared by a butcher in the US that knows what it's supposed to taste like and is delivered for Chrismas. Scandinavian ham tastes so much better than the American ham but YMMV. The owner is a real nice lady of Norwegian heritage and can tell you some interesting stories. They also have language lessons and all sorts of cultural events. If they would start selling caribou and Skane Akvavit, I wouldn't need to go to Sweden as often. Can't travel due to covid-19? Check out this North Dallas gem and experience Scandinavia! They had authentic items from Iceland, Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. Forget IKEA. This is the place to be, and we were happy to go and support this local business. The Finnish salty licorice were really good with an interesting taste. We also tried the Leksands rye crispbread with the Ekte Geitost Norwegian goat's milk cheese, which was a really delicious mix of crispy and buttery flavors! I can see why they have this for breakfast every day. Annas Finer Swedish Thins were also delectable. Overall, it's definitely worth a visit. Check it out and enjoy! read more

I love this place. Gwen is so nice, and I love being able to explore my heritage at her shop. There's always something new and fun, and there are great events throughout the year. My favorite is the lefse making event. Lefse is my favorite Norwegian food, and I love seeing how different people make it. I got great recipes last time! This place is amazing! I've been going here since I was a small child but hadn't been in years though it's always been down the street. I had forgotten what a little gem it is. It's like a museum/gift shop/market. Almost all of the rooms in the beautiful Victorian house are open, and there are treasures around every corner!
