You watch them blow up the balloon. Flight times vary. Our landing took an extra hour due to wind. After landing they drive you in van back to starting point. OUTSTANDING!! Janet, Hef, and the entire World Balloon team are friendly, helpful knowledgeable, safety aware, and just plain Fun. This was a really great experience! It was pretty tough waking up super early to drive from Santa Fe to Albuquerque for the ride, but it was all worth it. The World Balloon gang is super on time so be sure to get there on 6 a.m. or whenever they tell you to. We got there 15 minutes late and felt so bad because they called us to make sure we were going to be there. They waited for us to get there before "blowing up" the balloon. We got to see the whole process from start to finish and it was all so cool. The balloons are pretty huge and the basket size depends on how many people are in the group. Luckily, we were just a group of four plus the captain so it was a smaller basket and although it was a tight squeeze, it was still comfortable. I felt 100% safe the whole time we were in the air. It was so crazy how easy it seemed for us to get floating up in the sky. It was such a fun time because we flew up to about 2,000 ft and were pretty much just flying for an hour and a half (we got lucky because we had to find a safe spot to land). We were lucky to see the sunrise over the valley and got to see how green Albuquerque is, contrary to belief. On another note, the dogs were going crazy barking left and right and even though I'm sure the humans were annoyed at 7 a.m. in the morning, a lot of them waved to us as well - that was fun. :) We ended the experience with some mimosas and a cool historic story about how hot air ballooning started. I would definitely love to experience hot air ballooning again, but maybe in a different city where there are slightly better views than just neighborhoods. read more

Our balloon flight with Murray this morning was fantastic! He and the whole crew were great: knowledgeable, professional, and lots of fun. This is definitely the "A" team! The flight took us over ABQ neighborhoods (complete with annoyed dogs), arroyos, protected volcanic areas, the Rio Grande and more. Great fun and amazing views of the city and way way beyond... despite the wildfires north and south of ABQ, the air was clear aloft, but hazy at the horizon. The adventure starts with watching the crew unpack and inflate the balloon (amazing), continues with everyone (awkwardly) climbing into the basket, the heat of liftoff, the unbelievable calm once aloft, the surprisingly smooth landing, and ends with champagne and a history of ballooning. Don't miss this when you visit New Mexico!!! Pro Tip: if you're flight home leaves at noon or later... do this in the morning you'll be back on the ground by 8:30 am and ready to start your day. Pro Tip #2: it's warmer than you expect, but wear a hat and long sleeves anyway to protect yourself from the sun and condensation from inside the balloon. read more

Last weekend I did (survived is probably a better term) balloon ride with World Balloon and felt it was important to share this information. I was with a group of middle aged guys (all college friends) and two nice couples in the ride. Everything started off well and we all celebrated one of the couples getting engaged pre-take off. All the feels. Going up in the balloon was cool and our aeronaut seemed knowledgeable and experienced. The view and experience from the sky was cool - now one thing with this group is they are only allowed to operate 4 miles or further away from the main balloon fiesta grounds. This means they take off and land from random (fields) in a suburban part of Abq. This seemed fine at launch as it was a clear open lot but as we were trying to land, we noticed we were hovering over homes, trees, highways - you name it. Anyways, we we were told to assume the position with bent knees inside the balloon so none of us could see how or where we were landing and to our horror, we landed with a massive thud on the curb of a highway, bounced and then got dragged into a 45 degree incline sand dune with shurbs. Shocking. Some of us suffered minor bruises and hit our heads against the side of the basket. Even the on the ground crew seemed surpised at how bad the landing was but everyone pretended like it was no big deal. There was no apology and just a "hey that's ballooning for you". I felt it was important to share this. Yes we all know wind speed and direction are hard to control but the pilot chose to land in a crowded area and clearly missed the spot and for the life of me I can't explain how we ended up on and next to a highway. There was a second tour group waiting in the chase van and I suspect trying to get them in for their ride on time had a lot to do with the very poor decision to land when and where we did. Very disappointing. Relieved to not be seriously injured. read more

What an amazing experience! From the moment I called to make the reservation until the end with the champagne/sparkling cider toast it was stress free and fun. Leslie, the person that took the reservation was kind, attentive and gave me spot on tips for where to take my two youngest kids during the one day we had in Albuquerque. I mean you're in New Mexico, you have to ride in a hot air balloon!! Pros - - The guide was super friendly and will help you take pictures. - You get to watch them blow the balloon up, which is awesome to experience and it makes for some great pics. - They are not shy with the champagne! So drink up after your flight. - The guide will turn the balloon in circles so that you can see everything. Cons - - It was pretty tight in the basket, so if you're wanting a more personalized experience and you have the money to do so, go on a private balloon ride! My boyfriend and I had to switch off who stood on the edge of the basket and who stood on the inside. - You aren't actually in the air until after the sunrise, but that does make taking pics easier. Tips - - Try to get a corner spot so that you can see more angles. - We stayed in Santa Fe, so don't back out just because of the drive. What an experience!!! Absolutely beautiful views and awesome guide and chase crew. This company has adapted to Pandemic procedures and provided a safe yet still amazing experience for us. They had divider walls to keep each party separate, they sanitize and clean very well, and require each person to wear a mask. Our guide Mike, shared the history of hot air balloons and answered all of our questions. The crash crew was so great as well. You can tel this whole team is very hard working and what a great sense of humor they have too! This was such a great experience for us, party of three. Despite morning rain that deterred other balloon companies, they found a parting in the sky, confirmed the weather with official reports and manual measurements, and were able to keep to the planned schedule. Weather cleared up quickly as they predicted and it made for a lovely flight. Our pilot was Heff and he was informative and genuine. We had a graceful and safe glide over the Rio Grande, sticking the landing at the elementary school, which led to a pleasant interaction with the inquisitive schoolchildren. The ride is very gentle as the ballon just tracks with the wind, and they only fly in gentle currents, so I would encourage anyone hesitant because of a fear of heights to give this a try. read more

We knew if we were coming to Albuquerque we had to get on a hot air balloon. And we are so glad we did! It was a very early start but so beautiful to go over the Rio Grande and cotton wood trees with the sunrise. It was a little difficult to get in to the basket, it would've been nice to have a step stool but everyone was friendly and assisted. I'm athletic but the basket is pretty tall, at about my chest when standing. We spent about 45 minutes, maybe more, in the air. It was a tight fit, my boyfriend stood behind me and we were touching elbows with the couples next to us. Two couples to each side and on the other side of the divider there were probably 5 others. We learned about box wind patterns unique to ABQ and just had a grand time with the views. It was awesome to see other balloons up at the same time, easier to photograph because you can't see yourself. Would definitely recommend! We had a funny landing where the basket ended up sideways- not scary just hilarious, added to the experience. Once we landed we loaded up into a van and drove back to the original meeting spot and had mimosas. We got flight certificates and pins to commemorate the experience. They had branded champagne glasses but sadly they were sold out. read more

Went on our first hot air balloon ride this morning. We were greeted by a cheerful crew on a cold Sunday morning. We watched them prep the balloons and then they helped us all get into our balloon baskets and we were off.. lots of good information and humorous banter along the way and a beautiful ride where we got to watch the sunrise floating over the city followed by a landing on a golf course. Helped the crew pack up the balloon and took a ride back to our starting point with assistance from the chase crew. My husband and I celebrated our anniversary with a sunrise hot air balloon ride. We enjoyed a ride with the captain and the two of us. It was relaxing, educational, and fun. We were lucky enough to have conditions that allowed us to touch the water, tree tops, and get great elevation.
