Is this the same high end Hilo Hawaiian Hotel restaurant? Our rather large group of family and friends went for a very special occasion seafood buffet dinner and the food was absolutely bland it was unbelievable. I normally really enjoy pretty much all kinds of seafood. Biggest surprise was the king crab legs which I normally really love had absolutely no flavor and even tasted bland with salt and butter. I couldn't even eat my first plate and it's the first time ever that I ate less than a quarter of a helping plate in a buffet in my entire life. At $252 for a NEW YEAR'S EVE dinner, our meal wasn't even close to being worth it. 4 people (2 adults 2 Young Teens) it was one of their birthday, I even verified with the FOH that it was a special occasion. We ordered the seafood skillet, my husband said it was okay, seasoning was lacking and he didn't feel like working for his food so a good portion of the lobster wasn't touched. Our girls shared the NY strip, ABSOLUTELY no seasoning and was served medium when asked for medium well. We had to ask for steak sauce for flavor. I had the lamb which was well cooked but then slathered with a sauce and served with purple mash (Luke warm and bland) and asparagus (they were good). My mixed cocktail drink was lacking alcohol my husband enjoyed his Rosé. The highlight was the parmesan truffle fries and oysters on the appetizers menu. Our birthday girl didn't get any type of recognition or maybe they just do this, we've been to plenty of restaurants in all price ranges and the more high end has always asked if we were celebrating something and was at least offered some type of dessert. Again, we didn't ask because at this point we just chucked it up to a bad night of food (we drove 1.5hrs to get there). To be fare, we did not request anything be made over, it was already late and we had to drive back. Had a business dinner at WSWTS. Loved it. Started with a Hendricks Gibson Martini $14. Didn't order any appetizer or salad since I knew I was about to be going into carnivore mode and would need to preserve stomach capacity for the beast. I ordered the 18 oz. Ribeye medium rare $45 with a loaded baked potato $5. Clients had the 16 oz. Prime Rib $43. Side order of creamed spinach $9. The ribeye was grilled to perfection and was juicy and seasoned just right. The meat was tender and wasn't too fatty. I paired it with a glass of Penfolds Pinot Noir which worked perfectly with the meaty steak. The creamed spinach reminded me of the House of Prime Rib in San Francisco. Service was excellent. They had a roving whiskey service cart which I didn't partake in, but maybe I'll try the next time I'm in town which will be in November. I'm not sure about parking as I was staying at the Grand Naniloa next door and walked over. I liked this place and will definitely be back. read more

I've eaten here a couple of times and I've had a pleasant did I get experience both times. The ambience Eis casual and relaxed with beautiful views of Hilo bay. There is a spectacular wine display in the center of the dining room. There are floor to ceiling glass allowing for incredible views of the ocean and dazzling clouds and sky. They are famous for their steaks and also excellent seafood and shellfish options. The staff is gracious and helpful. The prices are reasonable for such a nice venue and food. I would highly recommend this place and look forward to visiting again. read more

Came here to celebrate a birthday and boy, what a let down. For a new steakhouse the menu and the atmosphere really make you feel it's still the 80s or 90s. Food is subpar, use the same mise (prep) for all the dishes, there's no pep, and food lacks flavor. The menu was good at putting the director, exec chef, and chef de cuisine's name on it--one of these three should be more apt of being creative, making food that tastes good, and coming out with some new dishes--not items that are menus anywhere in Hawaii.... The food was way too expensive for food that tasted like nothing and lacked any kind of creativity. Service was excellent! Waters were refilled promptly and our server knew answers to most questions. The manager (I'm assuming) who came to check on us was okay. When asked for crushed red pepper or hot sauce, she had nothing. She didn't even offer black pepper or an alternative to help us flavor up our uneaten, untouched dish. I'll probably never come back here and recommend that if you're reading this, save yourself time and money and find somewhere else to dine. read more

Are First time eating here. Got in for Mother's Day. We got the 16 oz. WSW SLOW ROASTED PRIME RIB with Steakhouse Truffle Butter and Loaded Baked Potato. It was so soft and juicy. Are daughter got the Keiki burger and fries. She said her was very delicious. For dessert we got CREME BRULEE and Locally Made Ice Cream, that days special was Cookie Monster. We're from Oahu, Kaneohe and was visiting family in Hilo. Decided to have a nice date night out with friends at WSW, saw lots of mixed reviews about this place so didn't know what to expect. We're Steakhouse people and like to try different steak places where we we go. My favorite steakhouse in HI is Signatures. Here the Ambiance and staff were great. Appetizers were okay. Steak needed more seasoning (salt) we had to ask for salt to be brought to the table. Steak was over done, ordered it rare. We spent about $400+ on appetizers, meal, and drinks for 4 ppl. All good EXCEPT for the TASTE of the food. I sense this restaurant focuses much on keeping the food and labor cost as low as possible. Terrible! We had reservations 6:30 and showed up right on time and the service started out good. We both ordered the WSW exclusive red wine which was awful, it tasted like Welchers grape juice with a ton of added sugar. My wife sent hers back but I managed to finish it. We then ordered the bone marrow for an app which took 35 min to come out and was pretty good. We then ordered our mains, she ordered the burger and I got the fish of the day which was snapper. We order them exactly at 7:15, by 7:50 we still didn't have our food and the waiter never came by once. At 8:00 she finally stopped by and said the food is taking a while and she'll send more bread out. The bread finally came out at 8:20 and at that point we just asked for the check, but she said the food was on its way out right now. 10 minutes later it did show up. The burger was supposed to be medium rare but was very well done and the fries were rubbery, you could tell it was sitting unpaid a heat lamp for a long time. The snapper was terrible, completely overcooked no seasoning and very dry. The steamed veggies that came with it consisted of 3 slices of carrots and 4 lemon wedges! Who steams lemons! I visited WSW twice in the last week, once for dinner and then for breakfast. Service good both times. Food disappointing both times. At least they're consistent. Dinner: Kona kampachi poke appetizer was attractive but small, even by appetizer standards, and was OK, nothing special. It came on a plate with potato chips I'm sure they'd claim were house-made and I'm certain came from a bag. Loaded baked potato was tasty but arrived cold. The ribeye au poivre had an excellent peppercorn cream sauce, but there wasn't enough of it, and it was the best part of the steak -- which was perfect medium rare but not at all juicy. It was like they didn't let it rest, although it arrived at a tepid temperature. The steak should also have had a hard sear with cracked peppercorns encrusted into surface. Should have, but no. Done right, it could've been worth the $44 I paid for it, a la carte. The best part of the meal was smoked Glenfiddich 12-year-old Scotch and two Longboard lagers. They charged for great and delivered ordinary, at best. I really wanted it to be great. Breakfast was equally disappointing. The 8 oz. (their claim, I think not) ribeye came well-done, just shy of shoe leather, even though I ordered it medium rare. Hash browns, OK, probably from a freezer box. I ordered eggs over easy and received over medium. The "toast" was dried bread without any evidence of toaster marks that may have been warm at one time, but not when I got it. The coffee was decent and the waitress kept it coming, but this is Hawaii, home to premium Kona and Ka'u coffees, which this wasn't. Twice, they've excelled -- at over-promising and under-delivering. Maybe they can stay in business by continuing to bilk tourists, but I'm going to have to receive some credible reports from the home team of a quantum leap in improvement before I return. We came here for the second time and the lady in the front was very rude and she had her mask down. When we came in The lady in the front didn't say good morning and she stuck her finger in her nose making us uncomfortable. We asked for another table since the lady next to us kept coughing they said no but have the restaurant was open. Our food took a while and the our drinks were empty and we had to wait so long for it to be refilled. The hamburger patty in the loco moco tasted like it was frozen and they warmed it up. The bacon tasted microwaved. And the eggs Benedict didn't have enough sauce TIP ask for the sauce on the side you get more.Last time we came we had a way better experience. read more

Let me start by saying that this was easily the WORST dining experience my family and I have ever encountered. I have never written a Yelp review before but the absolute absurdity and frustration from this experience has motivated me to speak up. We started our dinner by showing up to the restaurant around 6:10 pm. We were seated and immediately taken care of by a waitress. She then told us that the kitchen/service was backed up so the wait would be a bit longer. We assumed that it would be okay so we carried on like normal. Little did we know that we would have to wait 2+ GRUELING hours to get our food (absolutely not an exaggeration)! During this duration, we watched a huge party walk past us towards the back of the restaurant, who then got the full dining experience all in less than an hour of being there. We figured that maybe they had preordered their meals as a result of being a large party which was fine and understandable but the restaurant's management should have planned better. If you know you're going to have a full restaurant as well as a large party, you should plan accordingly so that you're not just prioritizing one party but all parties equally. As the first hour of waiting passed, we were already getting a bit irritated. We watched parties around us, who had been there much longer than us, just getting their appetizers, and at that point we knew we weren't going anywhere anytime soon. A party that was leaving, walked past us and even told us, "good luck getting your food." By the second hour our conversations had fallen flat and we were just completely hungry and miserable. During those two hours we were given 3 rounds of bread, which for our party meant one piece per person per round. And might I add, the pieces of bread were like oversized croutons that could be eaten in one bite. We had also managed to drink our drinks and then completely sober up before our food arrived. Then finally by the time our food arrived, we felt as if everything would taste unbelievably amazing at that point because we were so hungry. How we were so wrong... Lobster Mac: As a big mac and cheese lover, I was very disappointed. It tasted like macaroni and cream. I could taste the lobster and bacon, but I could taste no cheese or seasoning whatsoever. Caesar Salad: WORST salad I have ever tasted, which is amazing because how can you mess up a salad!? Especially at a fine dining restaurant! The dressing tasted like 90% water and 10% mayonnaise. It was terrible to the point where I couldn't even swallow it and we had it sent back to the kitchen. French Onion Soup: Average at best. Baby Back Ribs: Came out to our table at room temperature. The taste was good, nothing remarkably special or memorable. The plating was weak and looked sloppy. Linguine Vongole: Good amount of clams, however the sauce was a bit watered down. Fresh Catch (Opakapaka Fish): Looked like a small, sad, frozen fish slab. My dad was disappointed and didn't believe it to be an opakapaka fish. So not only did we have to wait 2+ hours for our food, which in itself is completely unacceptable, but the quality of the food was no where near the fine dining experience we were looking forward to and expecting. We felt terrible for the waitresses because we knew and understood that it wasn't their fault, yet they were getting the brunt of all the anger and complaints of the customers. They were completely professional and managed to keep a smile the whole time and apologize every time they stopped by. If the management staff truly wanted to express their apologies, they should've been walking around the restaurant themselves apologizing to each party for the wait. It's a small detail but maybe it would've made a big difference in terms of easing the customers. Then we got the bill, and were only given about a 14% discount along with a waived service fee, which was completely insulting, but even more because the party that had wished us luck getting our food earlier had said they had gotten a 50% discount. And a few of our own party had started individual alcohol tabs, but their wishes were disregarded as it was all added to the one big tab in the end. To say we were a bit upset would be an understatement. We had to approach the front desk of the restaurant after our meal, as did many other parties, to express our irritation and fight for a larger discount (ended up getting 40% off) as that experience was NOT ACCEPTABLE. We refused to pay a ridiculous amount for a terrible wait and disappointing food. They recorded our names and information and promised to give a better experience the next time we went to the restaurant, which is a step in the right direction to resolve our issue, but at the end of the day, WSW will always be tainted by this experience. I am a local resident, thus I am no stranger to amazing Hawaii cuisine, so this was just an embarrassing representation of what Hawaii truly has to offer. read more

Went to Easter Brunch today. $65/person!! Worse brunch ever!! The food was cold: French toast, bacon, sausage, fish and prime rib. The only item that wasn't was the omelette station since your order was made while you wait. The service was bad! Plates weren't removed, had to request drinks....No one came to your table to find out what kind of drink you wanted. I will preface this review with this: Yes I know it's Hilo, yes I know it's Covid time, yes I know it's a new place. I tried to take all those matters into consideration before I wrote this review so I won't be too harsh as I would have a long running restaurant if they were serving food in this fashion. The room: okay, nothing special, definitely not upscale whatsoever. The experience: Honestly only in the cheapest of cheap buffets do you find silverware and plates like this. I was shocked at the horrific forks. The tables have absolutely no character, no condiments are ever offered, etc. just a bare table. The servers seem overwhelmed because it's a BIG room to try to work in. They seemed very competent and friendly. The starters: Honestly, sad. We had the fries, Miso Butterfish Kama and the Kohlrabi. In Hilo you better know how to make Miso Butterfish, they don't. Just ok at best. The other two were soggy and flavorless except the Aoli was decent. Totally unforgettable and overall......sad. We had a Caprese salad....an ice cold refrigerated one. What good restaurant refrigerates tomatoes? The Mozzarella was grainy and weird. Main course: We had the Prime Rib with loaded baked potatoes. It was again lackluster to see when the plate arrived, no garnish just meat and a shriveled up small baked potato that was obviously cooked long ago and kept heated for later. Ugh. The meat had good flavor, the cut tasted like a normal rib roast you could get at any casino buffet in Las Vegas, surely not Lawrey's. Horseradish? Out of a bottle I'm sure, weak not fresh. The biggest insult was the side of grilled asparagus. What arrived was the skinniest asparagus that I've ever seen, which had been murderd by being cooked to completely shriveled and limp. Disgusting. The wine: The wine was excellent. Our server: Excellent and appropriately apologetic when faced with our obvious dismay at what the food runners had brought to our table. Prices; Top tier pricing that one would expect from a Ruth Chris, The Palm or other well run steakhouse. Absolute thievery for what we experienced. Nothing here tasted fresh, it all tasted pre-made or distributor sourced. Will we return? No. Too tragic! Hilo Bay Cafe and Jackie Rays are the high mark in town for upscale dining, sure not this operation. Too bad we had such high hopes for this place. We have come here several times for dinner and enjoyed each visit! This was our first time coming for breakfast and we loved it! The red velvet pancakes were delicious, thin, with a nice crispy edge. The loco moco was huge and had all different types of meat with it. The pieces are incredibly reasonable, we paid $30 for two people for breakfast and had leftovers. Like other reviews....I had such high hopes. With the demise of Moon and Turtle was looking for another nice spot to dine. Started well....got a table by the window (awesome view of the bay), and had a very attentive server. Ordered the TRUFFLE PARMESAN FRIES appetizer. Fries were good, but the small portion of truffle sauce only allowed 1 in 4 fries to be dipped in it, before running out long before the fries did. Filet Mignon is my favorite steak, so I of course ordered it. From having grilled many of these over my lifetime, I know it is the most difficult steak to cook right, and I prefer mine....medium well. I questioned the server, and she assured me they would butterfly it (even before I suggested it), to get the correct cook. As they steak approached my table...I was dismayed to see a very thick steak, with barely a tan, and no butterfly, but being the eternal optimist, I thought....oh, maybe they have found some new technique to cook medium well, without getting the outside brown!? Wrong....I cut a sliver off the end, only to see bright red. So I made the mistake of cutting it across the middle to access the damage....absolutely rare...refrigerator cold and raw in the center. The attentive server came by...and could see the mess on the plate, and she immediately addressed the situation. I merely asked that it receive some additional grill time (as I had basically butterflied it), but she told me they would prepare another. In what seemed like an eternity (at least twice the time as the first steak), I was then presented with a butterflied charcoal briquette. It was so charred, the wings of the butterfly were black all the way through. There was a tiny piece of meat in the center that was WELL done...but not charcoal....so I ate that, as I was famished. After the second steak arrived, my server had trouble making eye contact with me. She did have the manager come to my table. Since it was a Monday, I asked if the chef had the day off....but she assured me .... the chef was working. She did comp the dinner, as even she could see I did not receive an edible cut of meat. I had wondered if I should have waited longer...so they could get their legs underneath them....and the answer is clearly... YES... they are not yet running smoothly. I had a perfectly cooked filet mignon with a side of alii mushrooms. The steak was under-seasoned but I actually prefer it that way - I've had way too many over-salted steaks over the years. No complaints on the food. The martini I ordered barely filled half the glass, so that was one issue. Excellent wine list. Service was gracious, friendly and efficient. The room itself is nothing special but in line with a hotel restaurant - one issue is the noise level is very loud, even with reduced seating capacity. For the prices charged there should be tablecloths which would help to absorb some of the noise. read more

It's a new restaurant, so I will re-review after they have settled in. I recommend it with caveats. We ordered the most expensive thing on the menu, which was a tomahawk steak. It came, only, with a baked potato ("loaded"). We prefer steak frites, and they had pomme frites on the menu. We asked if we could sub it. They said no subs. Well, you would think for $141, they could accommodate that request - or at least - give you the option of one or the other. Anyway, we asked for a side of pomme frites (which is how it was listed on the menu). The waitress brought polenta. We said: "no, pomme frites". She brought the poulet frites meal. Finally, she got it. She knew nothing about the wine menu. None of this is her fault - the management needs to teach them the necessary French and educated them about their wine. Plus I love bourbon. For a whisky place - 3 bourbons isn't enough. That said, the food was cooked well and the view was stellar. It was too cold for me. I live in Hilo so I don't have to endure air conditioning. It's a noisy room. They need to improve fast. But, hey, I will give them another chance as the food was good. read more

My husband & I took my brother to dinner here while he is visiting home from Arizona. My brother & I had the Monday Surf & Turf Special while my husband had the Filet Mignon with Lobster Tail. We also had a bottle of Josh Cabernet Sauvignon & Crab Cakes. I am the only one who ordered dessert, Creme Brulee. All of our steaks were cooked to perfection, no steak knife needed & for the first time my husband's lobster tail was perfection! Other restaurants served him overcooked, chewy lobster tails. Crab cakes were moist & flavorful & creme brulee was just the way i love it! Our waitress & other restaurant staff were incredible & very attentive with so much Aloha! Some may say it's pricey, but for the clean, delicious food we absolutely believe it was worth it. My brother has not been home in 5 years so this restaurant is new for him & he loves it! We've been to a lot of nice restaurants, and this one was excellent. We went for Father's Day and were lucky enough to get in (with a reservation) right before the tables all filled up. The wait staff was exemplary - kind, courteous and helpful. We ordered prime rib, wagyu skirt steak, and a ribeye. This is definitely where I'd go back to for prime rib, and my husband felt the same about his ribeye. For dessert, we split the Jack Daniels cookie ala mode, which was fabulous. Was informed they are on menu 4 what's posted is menu 2, no New York, no 54 oz Ribeye (my anniversary so splitting a 54 oz was the plan). Our dinner plate arrived with HOT potatoes, luke warm vegetables and a COLD to touch steak! Not WARM but COLD! Waitress apologized sent it back to reheat, manager returned it hot and burnt! Apparently COLD got confused with undercooked! Waitress came bye took one look at our totally brown steak apologized, said she wouldn't eat it and took it off of bill! That was nice and appreciated but not why we went there, the steak was suppose to be the star! W.S.&W YOU HAVE ONE THING TO DO COOK A STEAK AND MAKE IT GREAT! I had the lamb shank that came with a mash of purple sweet potatoes and regular potatoes - it was a bit on the "gummy" and sweet side for me. I preferred the polenta which came with it the last time I had it. Their butterfish is a good sized portion for the price and is perfectly cooked. We also had the 39-oz bone-in prime rib which was great and had enough for 2 portions of leftovers. We splurged on the seafood skillet as an appetizer (they no longer offer the Norway lobster), the caper and butter sauce was very good too (wish they had more focaccia toast that came with it, but you'd have to pay an extra $3 for 2 pieces), along with a caesar and wsw salad. Enjoyed the view, ambiance and service. Would go back for a special occasion or as a splurge again. read more

The food was hit or miss. Took 1 hr and 40 minutes to get to our table and then it was cool and not hot. People who sat after us got their food first. Steaks were so so and not cooked to the way they were ordered and chicken was overcooked, but the mashed potatoes, poke prime rib, lobster Mac and the French onion soup were good. Honestly, though, for the price ai would not recommend.
