I was invited to a private luncheon event sponsored by a prestigious club. I was a guest and felt a little out of place within WSW. The restaurant has a beautiful view of Hilo's coastline and there is a superb wine cellar centrally placed framed within glass. As I glanced upon their wine selection, I understood why their sommelier paired the wine selection to WSW menu. We had a limited menu to choose for our midday event. My host picked their caesar chicken salad and it would have tempted any emperor. I had a gladiator appetite and chose their bacon mushroom burger. Dessert was not on the private luncheon menu, but I did wonder what sweet delights this kitchen crew could create. Now, I'm curious to know and hope to have an opportunity to explore their full dinner menu and savor the sweeter side of the palate. read more

This is our 2nd year celebrating our anniversary at WSW, and once again we were wonderfully delighted. Service - We were graciously greeted and seated immediately. Our server Maria was attentive and delightful keeping the celebratory mood going all evening. Food - As it was last year, the entire meal was mouth watering & scrumptious. We started with Ulu Hummus, a savory nutty treat. Main course was prime rib, Caesar salad fully loaded bake potato and Catch of the day with steamed veggies & rice. Everything exquisitely prepared and presented. The veggies were perfect, with a light crunch... and... that truffle butter is divine! Dessert- Mango Cheesecake and Crème Brûlée with coffee. I am unable to comment on WSW as a Steakhouse. I can, however, comment on the buffet meal they offered for Thanksgiving, 2023. Our party of six adults agreed that the meal was of "low-quality ingredients poorly or improperly prepared." Food on the buffet line was not at the proper temperature, and often incorrectly labeled. There are many great places to dine in Hilo..........WSW Steakhouse is not one to choose for Thanksgiving. Service was slow, inattentive, and inexcusable as the restaurant was not more than half full. I can understand an automatic 20% tip for a full-service meal for parties of six or more. A buffet where the customer served their plates and carried them to the table and the server's only function was to remove empty plates does not warrant a 20% tip. read more

No. Just no. I've waited to try the buffet nights as well as a regular menu night to come to the conclusion that this place is just barely scraping by. I went 3 nights within the last 2 weeks and tried almost everything along with my family to be severely disappointed each time. Usually if a place is bad, I'll still give it at least 1 more try because we all have bad days and you wanna give the benefit of a doubt. I am beyond disappointed. Ironically, with "steaks" in their name, you'd have the notion that it would be the best item on the menu but it was the worst they served. From prime rib to rib eyes to hamburger, everything was not only cooked wrong / temperature off, microwaved, etc, but also the quality is definitely not wagyu. That is false advertising. The seafood buffet was mediocre at best. Kinda hard to mess up crab legs unless it's old, which it was. Not crispy but not spoiled. Prime rib was over cooked to well done. Also, that station worker could not cut slices if his life depended on it. The desert station was always empty so I suppose either they don't replenish or people wanted to eat something edible. The steaks were supposed to be the best items to order on the menu according to the waiter. I regret doing so. I don't mind paying for a high quality meal but when your bill is closer to a thousand, I was hoping to at least be full. They do not know what is medium rare or medium well. It was either a piece of raw steak or overly well done dry as a bone. We didn't order anything well done so to have to send it back after already waiting an hour and a half, and it still coming back completely wrong, I have nothing nice to say. Whoever runs this place needs help. It would be nice to have a decent steak place in Hilo but all the cooks need help. The bussers did more work than anyone else. From the time we ordered to the time we got our first entree was an hour and a half. By the time we got the "corrected" but still wrong entrees, it was well over 2 hours. I suppose they figured out it was taking too long so they microwaved the raw steak and served it. How long does it take to microwave? For them it took over a half hour. Some of us were overly hungry by this time so some of us ate. While they choked on their burger being so dry, the medium rare steak person was sending back their raw steak complete with a bowl full of bloody liquid. Time management as well as the service was bad. Waiter was overwhelmed with only a few tables. I cannot stress how bad of an experience this was. This review is written in honesty with the hope that they improve as well as a warning to potential future diners. Also, expect to pay a 20% service charge even though it's written no where on the menu and there's no mention of it when making a reservation. Perhaps the 5 people in our party was at the threshold but just be aware that's it's already added in on the bill with another line for tips/gratuities. This restaurant was suggested to my wife and I while we visited Hilo. This place looks very high end. Very clean with very friendly staff. We ordered the ribeye for my wife and a full rack of the ribs for myself. The quality of both meals was AWESOME along with a great price. Quantity was also great. I most of my meal and most of my wife's. I didn't bother with a salad. I ate a little of the delicious truffle fries before devouring the food. Naturally, I didn't have room for dessert. First, im giving this a 2 purely because the Chateaubriand was good quality and the staff was super nice, but from the Valentines course menu, the Steak Tartare didn't have Ali'i Mushrooms or a quail egg or caviar like the menu said but ikura but I thought oh well, they might have ran out. The salad itself was alright except that it was advertised as Caesar salad and "Crab Leg" but we got imitation crab instead of the "butter poached crab. Now to the saving grace. The Chateaubriand was cooked perfectly and mashed potatoes were also very delicious. There was no tarragon jus or caramalized hamakua mushrooms but it was subbed with a vegetable medley which was still alright, would have loved the jus but that's alright. For desert we had the Crème Brûlée. It was a good quality desert but just not enough to carry the whole course dinner into another star. I REALLY hope you guys don't advertise an $85 course dinner and cut corners with cheap replacements or just missing it overall without letting us know that you are missing items without anything to sub for it. The other half had the Ahi Tartare which she said was alright. She was disappointed that there was no crab leg as that was part of the reason we decided to come tonight since she loves crab legs and turns out we don't get any. Her seafood trio was also okay, scallops were a bit under-seasoned, lobster was definitely the best part about it, though it was super chewy and tough. OVERALL SCORE: 3 out of 10. Wow! Ok, where do I begin? Let us start with the positives: -The Sushi was delicious -The Bloody Mary was delicious -The ice cream is icemilk but taste just like real ice cream. It was delicious. -The prime rib was cooked ok (cooked medium but we prefer medium rare). -The prime ribʻs flavor was ok. We have had much better (Seaside Restaurant) but also much worse. -All food choices were fully stocked and kept stocked (but there were only a few tables eating). -The servers kept the table cleared of old plates. Not OUR server, but the other ones. -Our water glasses were kept full. Now, the REAL-REAL: -The server came to take our drink order. She got my husbandʻs order and went to walk away. She took about 4 steps away from us and turned around to look at me, as if I was a second thought. . I was kinda shocked, as it was only my husband and I at the table, so how could she "forget" me? Lol. I ordered the bottomless Mimossa, but they no longer have it (although it was advertised online), so I said just water. -NOTHING WAS HOT. In fact, it was BARELY WARM or DOWNRIGHT COLD, including the prime rib, and butter. -The crab legs were very overcooked/old/dry/yellow, and fishy tasting. -The crab legs were cold and the ones on the bottom in the water were barely even warm, and so full of water they left a puddle on the plate. -The "butter" was fake and very oily. It was like dipping crab in room temperature vegetable oil. -I had to get up and ask for crab crackers. -We had to get up and ask for extra napkins. -We had to get up and ask for wet wipes. -We had to get up and ask for our check/bill. The service was very poor and the restaurant was very empty. -There were flies in the food area and the sushi server had to keep shooing them off of the sushi. -The bacon was burnt black to a crisp. Like, how could ANYONE (from the cook, to the server, and especially the manager) allow such burnt food to be served???? -The Portugese sausage was dry and burned. -The link sausage looked under-cooked, but I did not try them. -The omelet cook took off his hat, ran his fingers through his hair and over his face, put his hat back on, and went back to cooking. He never washed his hands. -The omelets others customers ordered were burnt, as the eggs were brown and crispy looking. -The waffle cook was on his phone while cooking (imagine the germs on your phone screen as most do not sanitize it regularly)! -The dessert choices were minimal: green tea cheesecake (was not good), haupia something, and ice cream. -My husband LOVES poke, but it looked slimy and gross so he wouldnʻt even try it. The only things he would eat were the crab legs and prime rib. He tried the cheesecake but didn't like it, as it was kind of sour tasting (I agreed and I wouldnʻt eat it either). -This is a fine dining restaurant, yet there were no tableclothes on the tables, no coasters or napkins set under the drinks so they left puddles on the table. -Noone ever asked us how we were doing or how the food was. Not the server, not the manager, and noone that cleared our plates. -My husband ate the crab legs because he wanted to get his money's worth somehow. He said it was so weird because one crab leg on a hand would be good and the next leg on the same hand would be dry and overcooked. But he kept going like a trooper! We sure do miss Queenʻs Court! We will NOT be returning to WSW for their Sunday Buffett, but we will tey them 1 more time for dinner (not anytime soon, but we always give each restaurant 3 chances. This was strike 2 for WSW). We went to the Thursday buffet dinner, huge mistake. $60 each. The restaurant looks like a tired high school cafeteria. The view is beautiful but it was so incredibly hot inside, no AC. The glass enclosed wine room was even hotter as it's in the full sun all afternoon. The food was not good. There were 4 types of poke,2 were good. No bread, no rolls, no crispy wontons of any kind. We're were served water in old damaged plastic cup. No table cloth. We arrived at opening and I noticed that none of the "salad" items were refrigerated or on ice, even those massive bowls of poke. 2 kine salad dressing. Slimy white rice, something that was unrecognizable as chicken rice? Beef stew, no bowls anywhere, Laulau that looked like last week's, dried out kalua pork, then the long spider thin crab legs, impossible to eat and finally prime rib, or so they said. I've never seen one that tiny2/3 fat, 1/3 meat. It was so tuff I couldn't chew it, and it was completely cold. Now this is a $60 per Hawaiian buffet, oh there was poi. This is the Walmart of buffets.6 people then at 6:20 a long line form at the buffet. Now it's still the same in cooled food as when we started an hour and a half ago, in the hot sunny windows with no AC. GROSS the dessert bar had stale chips ahoy, melted jello, something brown dry thing that had NO flavor and an ice cream machine. I had the ice cream. There were 2 handles, vanilla then chocolate? What I got was vanilla and water, it over ran the paper cup, yes a paper cup, and was everywhere! No signage to warm you just water everywhere. I gave up. We got the bill, $175, we had screw top wine $45. The suggested tip was 22%, 25% & 30%, they do nothing but drop off a bottle of wine but want a huge tip. Didn't happen. We paid & left. In two hours there are going to 100 very sick people in Hilo tonight. This place needs to be closed & turned in to the health department. On August 19th, 2023, celebrated my 23rd anniversary with my ohana. Left CheeHoo Festival early for dinner @ WSW. The younger gentleman at the front switched to my name. That was nice of him. I didn't get his name. Seated a few minutes before our reservation time. Our server, Pikake, was very polite. We were given water to sip while we looked at the menu. Took 40 minutes for appetizers to arrive. Side Salad was just that. Nothing special. The hubby & son loved the Bone Marrow. No complaints there. We all received a Coke each. No refills on the soda. However, we were offered once for a refill of water. Our order: Side Salad w/Ranch @ $5 Bone Marrow @ $15 8 oz. FILET MIGNON w/Garlic Mash @ $44 8 oz. FILET MIGNON w/Garlic Mash @ $44 12 oz. NEW YORK STRIP w/Loaded Baked Potato @ $45 (All with the WSW Steakhouse Truffle Butter) Excited to finally try this place (we were so hungry too). We waited an hour and were telling each other, I'm sure it'll be bomb af. As the food came out I was completely mortified & embarrassed. What a joke. Our food was served on a huge white plate. Just the meat and potatoes. No garnishes, no bedazzle. LOL. NOTHING. It was so bare. I couldn't even look at the plate until it was placed in front of me because I was afraid my disgust would show on my face. The "truffle" butter was served on the side in a cup. The steaks were so small & dry. I know Filet Mignons aren't big, to begin with, but oh my was I disappointed with what was before me & my ohana. We're big on trying new places for Steak & Potatoes. This was by far the worst place EVER! My son drenched his steak w/the "truffle" butter (I quote cause it's really just butter, nothing truffle about it) to try & get it down & nearly choked on it. I took one bite & knew even before that when I cut my piece that it was going to be terrible. The dictionary does not have enough bad words to describe the food that was served to us. I was able to fit my Filet & Garlic Mash on the appetizer saucer. YIKES! Pikake came over to see how we were doing & I voiceed my disappointment. I let her know that the steaks seemed as though they had sat out for 2 days & then microwaved to warm before it was brought out to us. I told her we were not happy with the dishes we were given.I stated we were celebrating our anniversary & this was not what we expected for a high-rated establishment. She did apologize & let us know that she would let the manager know. About 5-10 minutes after sitting there (still hungry, almost to hangry) the manager strolled over. He made it seem like he wasn't coming directly to us. So I was like um are you the manager? He did not give me his name but was able to get it from another worker. I let Nahoku (manager) know the same thing that I told our waitress (Pikake). He apologized & asked if we wanted him to box up our food. LMFAO. REALLY???? We declined. He took our food & left us. Our waitress came back & I told her we were ready to go. I was close to just walking out & not paying for the check. However, because I have integrity we stayed & waited. We were told that the manager would not refund our check. We did say that we didn't have an issue paying for the foodies that we did eat, which were the Side Salad & Bone Marrow. Nahoku did take off the dinners from our balance, however, from a business end of things, we should have been comped for the whole balance. I have never been so disappointed in a restaurant. I would NEVER suggest ANYONE to eat here. We sat there for hours, looking forward to a nice steak dinner for our anniversary & left hungry. We could have stayed at the festival, eaten at the food trucks, been satisfied & sated, and not missed a portion of the festival. On our way home we stopped by Mcdonald's for food but weren't able to because by that time there was only a drive-thru option. I have a large truck & cannot fit in the drive-thru. So, we went home, showered, & went to sleep hungry. What a disaster. My suggestion for anyone looking for a good place: PINAEAPPLES! So far this is the best place that we have eaten at. The service was amazing, the food displays were great, the meals were delicious & memories at Pineapples for lifetime. The only thing that compares with the two restaurants are they will not easily be forgotten...Pineapples for a good reason & SWS for a bad reason. We PAID $27 for appetizers & tipped Pikake $10 for her service. Had we not said anything, we could have easily paid $150+ (minus tip) for a bad memory & a bad taste in our mouths. An employee approached the host stand after about 5 minutes to attempt to seat the party in front of us- let's just say there were issues. In the meantime, another "host" stepped into the front area, neither greeting or acknowledging us OR the 4 other parties waiting to be seated. Finally, after we had been waiting for 15- 20 mins, an employee asked "your name, how many in your party". No "thank you for waiting", "good morning", etc. The employee than told us it would be " at least a half hour wait" to be seated, despite an abundance of empty tables visible. We declined due to already having waited 20 mins to be acknowledged. Ended up going to Naniloa- much better experience! Great food AND service. So we came back from hiking to see the lava flowing tired and hungry and we thought, let's just eat in the hotel. Sure, it's expensive, but it's late already, and this is Hilo. Plus the front desk gave us a coupon for a free appetizer.* As it turns out, this was a solid choice. We both ordered the miso butterfish, and I was expecting one small piece of fish on the plate (albeit artfully arranged). Instead we had these huge plates with three (yes, three!) large pieces of fish, a ton of rice, and a really interesting watermelon rind relish. Again, having anticipated the small (yet artfully arranged) fish, I ordered the lobster mac and cheese as a side. This also turned out larger than expected, and ended up being almost more than we could eat. Now you're probably thinking, surely he's too stuffed for dessert, right? We finally got out for a date night and the whole experience was awful. The service was bad, entrees came out while we were eating the apps, no salt and pepper on the table, had to ask for water, and steak knives were put on the table after we were halfway through with our steaks. The prime rib was mediocre at best, the ribeye steak was medium rare on one half and rare on the other when it should have been medium, the mashed potatoes were instant idahoan, and the veggies tasted like the frozen ones from costco. I had the best experience at dinner last night here. I came by myself since I am on a work trip. They wanted to make sure I had a nice table. I had the most wonderful server! As a starter I ordered the truffle fries. Heads up, it is a very large portion. After almost filling up on the fries, I still wanted to try an entree so I ordered the Kampachi, to keep it light. It was delicious! To complete the experience, and after going on a food bonanza, I needed dessert so I ordered the oreo cream pie! It was delicious! Everything about my dinner was perfect! The server, who I also considered company at that point was so sweet! Please keep in mind this is a steak restaurant. I read a lot of reviews that discussed their lack of presentation. I did not find this at all, but if you do think the presentation is lacking, you are welcome to go to a place that serves bite size portions, with beautiful presentations. Sams reviews: breakfast at WSW. Let's start by saying if you want good breakfast I would go into town. I was lazy and decided to eat at the hotel. I got the hungry breakfast, which I will attach picture below. Coffee was so weak I would have preferred dog piss. Also found a weird blue hair thing in my eggs?? Recently went to the Sunday brunch at WSW. For $69.95 per person, the food selections, presentation and quality was not great. The buffet is located in an adjoining room and not in the same area as the dining area. If you are someone who is not fully body capable reaching and getting to the some of the food items will be difficult without assistance. Some items are on pillars and hot items have lids that you have to fully remove. I noticed that the walking area in the buffet room might be a little too narrow for some. The dining room area is very spacious and has a very nice view of the water. The crab clusters were horrible. Because they sat in water, they were very mushy and waterlogged. They were also very bland. The servers were very attentive and nice. The front desk could use a little more training on decorum. One of the employees was constantly looking at their phone and took awhile to notice that someone was waiting to be acknowledged. This happened quite a few times. read more

absolutely the worst ribeye steak let me rephrase that worst steak I've ever had in my life and I've had some bad sirloin. Can't tell you about anything else but half my steak went back half chewed. It's bad when you request steak sauce to go on your steak but they didn't even have Heinz 57 steak sauce ( my go to for bad steak) to go on my (so called steak) All they carry is a1. A planned breakfast with friends which turned our to be a great day but the food was absolutely horrible! First the crab legs were overcooked, tasteless, dry, and too rubbery to break open. The butter that was served to enhance the crab did nothing for it. As for the Kalua Benedict was also a rubbery piece of bread with a perfectly cooked poached egg that had no seasonings and the hollandaise sauce just lacked! The prime rib and the oxtail soup were just okay and the dessert table... well compared to the buffet prior it does not come close to comparison. We did not get what we would have expected for $69 per person not including tips. As for the waiters and waitresses they were all great very friendly and helpful. But what a waste of space in such a nostalgic hotel! read more
