Always treated like family and Dr. Chen is gentle and caring and does not line his pockets with unnecessary procedures.

Long time patient and happy that Dr. Chen practice is back open again post Covid. He's super attentive and listen to your concerns. Highly recommend going for a visit! read more

Dr. Chen is a fantastic dentist. My whole family goes to him. He is exceptional with my son- who started to go to him when he started having teeth. He made my toddler at ease and now my son loves going to the dentist!! Lena- his wife and office manager is also super organized and makes everyone feel welcome. Choose x-cel and you can't go wrong! read more

X-Cel Dental used to have its office on Canal Street. The practice recently relocated to a bigger space in the Financial District. I breathe almost exclusively through my mouth, which leaves me with extremely sensitive gums. For that reason, getting my teeth cleaned had long been a painful experience... until I, like many of my co-workers, started going to Dr. Chen a few years ago. He cleans my teeth using some kind of special system involving spurts of highly concentrated salt water. Whatever it is, it does the trick and nicely minimizes the pain to my gums. There are so many other great reasons to make X-Cel your dentist. Dr. Chen is friendly and explains exactly what he's doing in your mouth, while he's doing it. Dr. Chen and his wife Lena, the receptionist, are extremely accommodating too. I unexpectedly arrived half an hour early for my most recent appointment and they managed to fit me in within a matter of minutes. One morning a friend's boyfriend needed to see a dentist ASAP for some kind of emergency so I suggested Dr. Chen. Dr. Chen took care of my friend's boyfriend that very same day, a Sunday no less. When I had to change my last appointment several times at the last minute because of unexpected things that came up at work, Lena was always patient with me and managed to give me new appointments within a matter of days. I can't say enough good things about X-Cel Dental. I won't go anywhere else for my dental work. read more

I love Dr. Chen- and he is very cognizant of what my insurance covers and does not cover. Lena is also great. Only regret is that now, though many dentist have reopened, his office is closed until further notice. I imagine this is due to Covid-19. read more

Dr. Chen has been my dentist for 2 years now, and their technology/service is seriously amazing. He can take pictures of my teeth at each visit and show me the before/after cleaning pics. Also, in terms of scheduling, they are incredibly accomodating. who can forget the free plate set after your first visit? anyway, my coworker (who wasn't even a patient at X-Cel dental at this point) chipped his tooth at around 6:00pm. He called X-Cel, and Dr Chen and his wife waited after hours at the office for him to return all the way from Brooklyn so they could fix it. Truly exceptional service and really nice people. They also take all kinds of insurance, so it's a win win situation. read more

Dr Chan has truly excellent skills and am truly thoughtful to his patients. I have a situation that was built up over multiple years due to a previous sub-optimal crown treatment from another dentist, and doctor Chan was very patient, very experienced with the treatments, and adopt a plan that's minimally invasive to the patient but need more work on his part. I am truly grateful to Dr Chan, and would highly recommend him to any friends. Btw, his wife Lina is great too, very friendly and try hard to accommodate any change in schedule you may need. read more

Sent from Rudy's I-Phone Begin forwarded message: why I love my dentist Dr Chen???...not only is he extremly talented and pays a meticulous attention to detail, but it's his interpersonal skills that impresses me the most. Consider that high praise from someone that's always been afraid of dentists...his caring personality has helped to alleviate my fear and reservations about visiting the dentist...his staff is just as talented and caring. Lets not forget his wife/office manager Lena who's very personable and makes you feel comfortable & at ease. I always look forward to our conversations during my visits....X-Cel Dental Baby!!!! read more

After getting screwed by more than one dentist, I came to Dr. Chan for a second opinion. The experience turned out to be the BEST dental visit I've ever had. I would even pick this fantastic husband/wife business over the family dentist I grew up seeing. His office is state-of-the art, his assistants function like well oiled machines and there's a level of quality, care, and concern that is rarely seen at any medical spaces. X-Cel is simply the best. read more

The staff and the dentist is very patient with my son after the initial trauma from another dental experience. He would ask to go back to this dental office. (He is only 4 years old) read more

I love, love, love Dr. Chen and his wife!! Firstly, my teeth feel like they are on little mini pillows the entire time I'm being treated. That's how careful and gentle he and his two assistants are as they clean my teeth. And Dr. Chen shows you your X-rays right away. He never recommends any extra services unless they are absolutely necessary and makes you feel extremely comfortable if you want to schedule the service around your budget. I used to hate going to do the dentist. Opening my mouth, bigger, and bigger, and having this giant hairy fist scraping away. But no... sometimes I'll attempt to schedule an appointment in before the insurance allows cause I like him that much. read more

after 8 years of going to another dentist in manhattan that i hated, today i had my first visit to Dr. Chen and had a great experience. They took me for my appointment on time, which was a huge issue at my old dentist. The office is well-lit and full of the latest cleaning, x-ray and video technology. Dr. Chen walks you through the x-rays and videos to show you what he is looking for. He also does the cleanings by himself (as opposed to a hygienist), so you feel like you are in really good hands. This will be my regular dentist moving forward. read more

These other 5-star reviews are so obviously not written by patients. Indeed, Dr. Chen's office is clean and his wife is very nice. He is a nice man and a fine dentist too...as long as he sticks to x-rays, cleanings, filling cavities -- the basics. It's true that his office is good at fitting you in for emergencies, but beware. It has been my experience and the experience of several others I know that Dr. Chen lacks a sufficient awareness of his professional limitations. He works beyond his skill level. Do yourself a favor and go to an endodontist for root canal work. Seek the services of an oral surgeon for extractions. My three cents based on the harsh and extremely costly$$ reality of my experience. read more

This place really makes you feel comfortable about going to the Dentist. Dr. Chen is great, quick, high tech and pain free. What makes the place rock is Lena. She gets me right in for emergencies with no wait. I've been there for over 2 years now and have never waited. I even bring my little daughter and Lena plays with her while I get my teeth cleaned. I am a medical professional myself and this place is highly recommended! read more

This dentist is amazing. They remember you, fit you in when you have a problem, EXPLAIN things to you, endless patience. In addition, the place is SPOTLESS. Couldn't recommend more. read more

It's hard to find medical care in this city where you really get to know your Doctor. Both Lena and Dr. Chen are such amazing people, they will really treat you like family. The work they do is fantastic, and you know because Dr. Chen will take photos and show you before and after photos, which is fascinating to me at least. Even though their office is bit of a trip for me, as long as I'm in NYC I'm a life-long client. read more

I hate dentist! Having said that, Dr. Chen is the best. His office equipment is high -tech. He's caring as is his staff and his willing to work with you in every way. He was recommended by people at my former job. I went to him every six months like clock work until I stopped working and didn't have dental insurance. I now have dental insurance but don't live in New York anymore...but whenever I visit NY (home for me) I will make a stop to his office for a routine check up. A dentist that you find and like -- you want to keep, no matter how far! read more

Currently I'm insurance-less... That's what it's like for Millions of people in the United States who've lost work. Luckily my tooth cracked when I finally found a job but during the 3 month "probation" period so I still find myself without medical coverage! So I crack my tooth around 6:30pm on a Wed night. I scramble to call my Dentist who does not have an emergency contact. Two minutes later I'm on the Web and I find myself on Yelp. I punch in my work zip and I come across a Dr. Chen. I frantically call the office and they're still there. I quickly explain my situation and she responds for in a concerned voice, to come right over that they would take care of me. I run over to 75 Maiden where the lady behind the phone greets me. I explained to her my tooth problem and that I was also worried what it was going to cost me. That I just started working again and the probation period...etc. She looked at my pitiful self and said just pay what you can now, I trust you, and then you can pay the balance when you have it. I was so relieved to find such kind people. She ushered me in to the room where I sat in an immaculately clean office, in a spaceship like chair. Dr. Chen was the man! He effortlessly worked on my tooth as he casually talked with his wife and send me on my way in no time. She even gave me a present; a plate and a neat little pouch with goodies from the Dentist. She looked at me with those kind eyes, shook my hand as I thanked her and said goodbye. I will never forget the kindness they extended me. I'll be a client of Dr. Chen and family for the rest of my days. read more

Dr. Chen and his office were great. I have never been to a dentist without being told that I need some fillings or the dreaded root canal. So as you could imagine, I was really nervous going to the dentist, thinking I would need a battery of work done on my teeth again. The office was very clean and the receptionist, I think her name was Lea, was very nice. She explained what my insurance covered and whatnot. She said that my insurance only covered 80% of any preventive care, but she was wiling to waive the costs for my X-rays and cleaning since I was a first time patient. I was very grateful for that. I didn't have a long waiting time either. After I filled out my medical history, I was immediately escorted to an examination room and within minutes, Dr. Chen came in with two hygenists. He checked my teeth and asked me some questions. After that, they took X-rays. I had two root canals done by other doctors and he told me that there weren't done very well. I'm not surprised since I didn't have dental insurance when I was in grad school and had to pay out of pocket for dental services and went to cheap dentists to get my root canals done. However, Dr. Chen said that since he doesn't see any infection, the root canals were okay for now. He told me that he was going to clean my teeth and I was all set to go. I was surprised and asked him if I needed any fillings and he smiled and said that everything looked good. Last time, I was at the dentist two years ago, which was NYU dental school (terrible btw), they told me that I had a small cavity, but since they don't believe in filling every tooth, they thought it would be better to let the tooth heal on its own and not fill it. I went to other two other dentists after that and they did say something about a tooth having a potential cavity, but were more concerned about a very deep cavity I had and another tooth that needed a root canal. I got both those teeth fixed. but didn't get the minor cavity fixed. I haven't gone to a dentist since then, so I expected some work to be done. Dr. Chen was very honest and told me that he didn't see any decay. He cleaned my teeth very thoroughly and efficiently. I don't remember my other cleanings being as thorough or long as Dr. Chen's cleaning. His hygenist was very good about putting vaseline on my lips while Dr. Chen was cleaning my teeth. Dr. Chen himself even stopped cleaning at one point and applied the vaseline himself when he thought the hygenist missed a spot. Dr. Chen spent a good amount of time with me, and I am very satisfied with the professionalism and competency that he and his staff showed. I will be a repeat client. Thanks again, Dr. Chen and staff for making this dentist visit a good one for me. read more

My family haven't been to the dentist in years due to the lack of care and professionalism from our last dentist. A friend of ours recommended X-cel dental. My wife called and made appointments for us and off we went. Soon as you walk in their is a smile and a friendly hello from the receptionist not like the other dentist where they act like they didn't want to be there and all they did was talked about their personal lives. At X-cel everyone was nice and the dentist explained everything from start to finish. The best dental exam and cleaning I have ever experienced. read more

Dr. Chen and his staff are great. Very professional yet they make you feel comfortable and ease any anxiety about going to a dentist the moment you walk through their doors. I've been to a few dentists in the past and Dr. Chen is by far the best. Goes above and beyond for his patients and doesn't play any games or gimmicks with insurance as a few dentists have done to me in the past. I highly recommend you try him out. read more
