Eagle was aware that it should have arrived, and the shop owner took the initiative to call me to check on the status before closing shop. Thankfully Eagle has a key drop, so the tow arriving after hours was fine. They must have looked my car over immediately the next day, because diagnostics were done quickly and I got a call early that morning. They kept me in the loop about the repair, explained what they were doing and why, answered the phone consistently to answer follow up questions I had, and went even more into detail about the repair when I arrived and asked additional questions about the mechanics of it. Just like a doctor who answers your questions, a mechanic who does the same helps put you at ease. It wasn't cheap (& what transmission work is?), but it was incredibly fast and I had my car back and repaired the same day diagnostics were run. Plus, the parts & labor came with a 1-year/12,000 mile warranty.

I can no longer recommend Atypical Mechanic after how they have recently treated me…read more I originally used them in 2021 and left a 5* review for them, but the short story is they quoted me a flat $120 diagnostic fee, showed up and did the diagnostic and asked for $240. We were able to work that out, I thought, and I left a 5* review as they did do the diagnostic I paid for. Fast forward to February of 2022 and I had them back for a different problem, and they diagnosed the problem as needing a right front wheel bearing. Took the car to Juke and did the job and that didn't fix the problem at all. After some diagnosis at Juke, they said I would need the left front wheel bearing and new engine mounts to fix the problem. $2,000 in repairs later, the problem went away. I never left Atypical a bad review for their diagnosis even though it was only 1/3 of the problem. Lucky for me, Juke was nice enough to waive their diagnostic fee to find the real problem. Fast forward to 2023 and I emailed them for a few price quotes for other jobs. After some back and forth, they told me they are "not the best fit for [my] mechanic needs moving forward." I don't remember anything happening when they did the diagnosis in 2022 other than their tech leaving an expensive tool in my vehicle which I contacted them to return. I guess they finally decided they were mad from 2021 that they didn't get another $120 out of me? I don't know. I asked for clarification on what their issue is but they refused to explain if it was anything other than the first incident. I've paid my invoices and have no issues with Atypical Mechanic, so I'm not sure what their issue is with me. UPDATE 03/29/23: Jeremy makes two points in his response. First, that I knew the diagnostic fee was hourly. This is incorrect, and his original message says: "Our evaluation fee is $120. This is also our hourly fee so if your evaluation is under an hour the remainder of that fee would go towards the repair." The first sentence says the evaluation fee is flat rate $120, not hourly, and only talks about a discount applied to the hourly rate for repair. It's poor wording on his part, and when we spoke on the phone Jeremy seemed to understand where I was coming from. Apparently that was not the case, and two years later he still feels like he is in the right and I'm combative. Second, he says I cancelled multiple appointments within an hour which is just a blatant line. I looked over all of the emails, and here are the timelines for all of my appointments: 01/31/22 @ 3:02pm: appointment scheduled for 02/11/22 @ 1:30pm 02/10/22 @ 2:57pm: rescheduled appointment for 02/14/22 @ 11:30am (22 hours in advance) 02/14/22: appointment kept and paid $120 diagnosis 02/14/22 @ 3:49pm: appointment scheduled for 02/24/22 @ 1:30pm 02/23/22 @ 7:34am: appointment cancelled (29 hours in advance) With Atypical's appointments running 2 weeks in advance at that time, it was hard to know my schedule that far out. I rescheduled and cancelled when I found out I would not be available. 22 & 29 hours does not seem egregious to me, and I'm sure you filled those holes if you were booking 2 weeks out. But to say I cancelled MULTIPLE TIMES and WITHIN AN HOUR is an outright lie. You can say that you found me combative, but don't lie, Jeremy. Not a good look when I can pull up the times from my email to prove you're wrong.

I had other help from other mechanics, not that they were bad, but Jeremy was more knowledgeable and informative. I used him for other things and will continue to use Jeremy. I have not used the other mechanics but hope they are just as good.

MTZ had previously worked on her vehicle before. They do great work and in my own opinion they are honest than most places these days. Their mechanic talked with me in person. He told me the worse upfront, basically a new engine. The best hopeful news it was repairable, but they wouldn't know until they went through all the codes and take the engine apart. Basically at 165k+ miles the timing belt broke on the engine among other things. They also told me they recommended to replace the water pump before it went out since it was at the mileage. It a took about a couple of weeks for the entire repair. When I went to pick it up the day they said it was ready. The engine felt like new and to be honest it felt better than it did before. I am going to continue to use this shop for major mechanical needs.

After some research, I determined the brake pads likely needed replacing. I called around the major chains and they wanted to charge me at least a couple hundred bucks. I was scared the rotors might need replacing (or that the shop might bully me into it) which they told me would cost several hundred extra dollars. I was readying myself for a $200 or even $500 bill! Then I found Ed on Yelp; his site listed MUCH better prices so I thought it'd be worth a try. Despite the fact that he's running around town working hard on people's cars, he still managed to respond within a few hours to my first text and typically within a matter of minutes to the subsequent ones. When I had some last minute issues with work, he politely discussed alternate times with me. Ultimately, he showed up within 30 min of the time he suggested and completed the brake pad replacement in only 30 minutes. He looked at the rotors with me and explained why he didn't think they needed replacing yet and what to watch out for later. The big chains always try to get me to replace my cabin air filter and things like that, but no pressure from Ed - just a great job. He was kind, positive, and seemed happy to answer my questions. Their front door says it all with their triple B business rating and ASE certified mechanics. They also do a multi point inspection to make sure everything else is functioning. One thing that was pointed out, which I already knew about, was the fact that I had a torn CV boot that needed to be replaced. Since the CV joint had lost all the grease, it was also best to replace the whole axle which doesn't add that much to the price since most of this is labor. As a result, I made an appt and came back a few days after the oil change and had that repaired. I was pleased to see on the invoice that I am a gold VIP member which means I received an additional discount. I also appreciate the 36 month/36,000 mile warranty which dealerships often do not have. As someone who owns four cars, they'll be seeing me again at some point.

I did my homework and gathered about 5 estimates for this service from local shops and Toyota dealerships. Prices were coming in anywhere from $1000 - $1500. I stopped in at Christian Brothers in Leander on Sonny Drive and spoke to Brandon. He text me a written quote, which came out about half of what the other shops were asking. They also give a "Veterans/First responders" discount. Their work was professional, and they communicated with me all the time. They sent a video of a free service inspection of my truck, pointing out any areas of concern. I think I've found my back up mechanic for anything I can't do or just don't want to.
