As always, this place does not disappoint. They've finally opened after being closed for more than 2 months and I am so dang happy. I love this place. The food is always consistent and the owners are great. The lady who runs the front is always nice and always has a smile on her face. It's such a welcoming place. This place came highly recommended by my brother so I had to try it out while in town. It's right by my favorite banh mi shop, but I never knew it existed. Unassuming exterior and can be easily overlooked if you weren't looking for it. The name is partially in Chinese characters so just look for the word "BBQ." The interior is small and intimate with cool murals on the wall. We were greeted and guided to seat ourselves. I was instructed to get the lamb skewers and to not even look at the beef skewers, both being top sellers, but the beef tends to be dry here. The lamb was generously flavored with a cumin forward seasoning. Don't take your time with these. They are best eaten right away. The lamb is lean and juicy with some fatty pieces for the perfect balance. If you get the tendon, be prepared for different textural bites. Some are hard and chewy while others are soft and gelatinous. Veggie side dishes are great! I am a new lover of the smashed cucumbers. It's a refreshing, cool pairing to the grilled meats. The stir fried garlic on cai is another delicious side dish. Also known as water spinach, it's one of my favorite Asian greens since I was a child. I also ordered the spicy fish filet which are fried fish cutlets served in a bowl of chili oil. I ate a couple of pieces and thought it would be great eaten with rice, which I was skipping that day. Wish I found this restaurant in Chinatown earlier - skewer galore! They have a wide selection, all are very affordable. The skewers adopt a traditional Xinjiang (Chinese) spice profile and I really enjoy the mala flavor from the Szechuan peppercorn. The most interesting was the beef tendon. To my surprise, it was very chewy and flavorful, which suggests to me that they marinated the cut very well, since I would think that it's hard for flavors to seep into the thick gelatinous layer. Came here for a late night snack one night with my friends. I randomly found this place during one of my yelp searches and I looooove xin jiang styled lamb skewers so I knew I had to come here. I think it was $11 for 10 lamb skewers so we got 10 lamb skewers. We also got 5 gizzard skewers, one heart skewer, one oyster mushroom skewer, and one beef skewer. Our friends ordered a beef chow mein and a pork chow mein. The chow meins were pretty decent. Had a really nice aroma to it. The only thing was: the pork chow mein had vinegar in it so it was more sour than the beef. Also, they tasted like the chow mein you get at Panda Express but a little bit better: more noodles with meat and less cabbage. The lamb skewers were pretty good. They had a good flavor. I wish they used ground cumin instead of whole cumin seeds. Some of the skewers were fatty and some were lean. The gizzard skewers were so-so for me; it wasn't that flavorful. Had a great experience here!! It's been bookmarked on my Yelp for a while so I finally came for dinner with a friend. We got lamb and beef skewers (10 for $11) which is a decent price point. The seasoning is similar to Fat Ni BBQ across the street. It is super flavorful with a slight kick. We saw pics of the combination noodles online and they looked delicious so we got those - they came with beef, pork, and shrimp and it was amazing. My friend had found this place during her research of houston and decided to have it on the list of places to try since we loved a cart in Flushing that sells xin jiang style skewers. Lamb skewers were $1.25 each but $11 for 10. Along with lamb, got 5 chicken gizzard skewers for $5, 1 chicken heart skewer, 1 oyster mushroom skewer. Friends had ordered a pork chow mein and beef chow mein, and a beef skewer. Unfortunately for one of our friends, he could not eat red meat (lent kind of thing) on that Friday so he couldn't join us on the lamb skewer eating. Lamb skewers were decent. Flavor was nice. Wished they had used cumin power along with whole/crushed cumin seeds. Adds a flavor profile to the physical appearance of the seeds. Their "chunks" varied in sizes and fattiness. Some leaner than others. Some fattier than others. Unfortunately, like them, i had not figured out a good lamb cut for skewers that was as good as the cart in Flushing, NY. The price is the biggest selling point of this place. I've never seen any restaurant sell beer so cheap. They sell beers at the actual bottle value if you buy a six pack, NOT at a ridiculous 4-5$ per bottle. They have a lot of skewer sold in bundles of 10 for a better deal. Service was normal, and restaurant was decently clean. The big plate chicken was quite tasty as other reviews suggested, and it was plenty to share between two. The first Chinese hole in the wall place I've gone to in Houston. Well, it's still a rather new plaza for its location. In generally speaking, the plaza is not well kept. This Northern Chinese Barbeque place is good. We ordered shrimp, lamb, and squid skewers, along with a Chili Chicken Stew, an order of Ong Choy (green veggies), and beer. The skewers is delicious! Very tasty as it's lightly marinated and grilled. I'm not too much of a lamb person, but that was the most tasty. The shrimp skewers was fine. I wasn't a fan of peeling the shell, and eating its guts along with the brain matter. I would have enjoyed it more if there was no shell. The squid skewers was chewy and a bit bland too. I assume the toughness of the squid had the chef use metal picks instead of wooden sticks. But I would probably pass on the squid the next time. The Ong Choy with garlic was delicious! Very tasty green veggies. You could either order it sauteed or stir fried with garlic sauce. I recommend this​ to try. But proportion of this order was rather small and had no presentation. Just sloppy. The best item ordered was the Chili Chicken Stew. The chicken falls off it's bone, soft potatoes, and a bit spicy for a nice kick. It was cooked to perfection. The stew comes with a side of flat rice noodles as a neutralizer. The proportions was hefty​. The way I like it. The place wasn't as busy when we walked inside. The waiter quickly took our order. As you can see from all the other reviews, the only thing you really need to order here are the lamb skewers. I shared 22 of them with two friends the other night and we were very content with how much we ate. I had about 7 sticks, and paired with the rice (which I think you need to ask for), it should be enough for a meal that takes you from 0 to 7 on a hunger scale out of 10... That being said, I'm buying all 10 for myself next time. These were just so damn good. We also ordered the beef skewers, but compared to the lamb, these were straight garbage. Except not, in reality they were ok, just a bit dry.. but see that was mainly dependent on the fat content of the raw meat itself. The fat in the lamb they used was more prevalent than the beef, resulting in a hell of a lot juicier bite for the lamb. Seasoned quite well with cumin and some slight heat... deliciously caramelized... fun to eat... Be warned though, I think they roughly chop their cumin seeds or something because a few long strands were still on the meat, so when you bite down it's as if you're chewing on a splinter...when in reality it's just the longside of a seed. +1 for not heavily relying on the powder, but -2 for the lack of finesse. Be careful; just know it's a seed and not wood that you're actually chewing. Interior was nice and clean. Waitstaff was as to expected from Chinatown. I've never really had a place where I'd go and order just one thing when they have so many dishes...but I'm not even curious about the rest of them when I know that I have an A1 dish at the very front of the menu. 8/10, would come again and would recommend to a friend. read more

TLDR: A great place featuring Chinese BBQ skewers, but the dishes here are sure to impress. Get the lamb skewers, Big Plate Chicken, and a noodle dish if you're really hungry, but stay away from the beef skewers. The main draw of the place is the Chinese BBQ skewer selection, which takes up the entire first page of the menu, but the dishes here are pleasantly surprising and certainly worth a try. On this occasion, I tried the lamb, beef, beef tendon, and chicken gizzard skewers. The grill that lays atop the table isn't for cooking the meat, but rather just a fancy surface that your skewers lie on top of in order to keep warm. Though I was most excited about the skewers, they were mediocre at best. The lamb was by far the tastiest of the bunch, covered the great, cumin-y rub definitive of Xin Jiang cuisine, and having a perfect meat to fat ratio. The tendon was inconsistent, featuring some pieces with a perfect, gelatinous texture, and others that were just far too soft or inexplicably hard and crunchy. Having never had gizzard, I can only best describe it as a bit like clam meat with a crunch, but it was mediocre at best. The beef skewers, however, were a huge disappointment, as all 3 I tried were extremely tough and chewy. I will say, though, that portion sizes were quite fair, and each skewer fairly substantial. Xin Jiang BBQ does offer a huge selection of skewers (including bull testicles, if you're feeling adventurous), so I'd recommend sampling at least a few varieties. Stick to the lamb, though, for the majority of your order. In my opinion, the dishes are where this place actually shone the most. Our party ordered the grilled enoki, grilled eggplant (these were listed on the skewer side of the menu), noodle soup with pork and pickled greens, and the Big Plate Chicken, the last one being a classic Xin Jiang dish. Xin Jiang BBQ does an excellent job in packing tons of flavor into their dishes, and they taste authentic and well seasoned. The grilled enoki had a seasoning rub reminiscent of the classic cumin-y rub on the skewers, but with a little more kick that elevated it. While I am not usually a fan of eggplant, this places' rendition features tons of roasted garlic on top, making it one of the only times I went back for seconds for an eggplant dish. Having lived in China myself and sampled the chicken dish and the noodles in an authentic setting, I can attest that this place does a pretty good job. The Big Plate chicken comes in a heaping bowl with potatoes, peppers, and cut up chicken drumsticks in a delicious, spicy, gravy, with thick cut noodles on the side to mix in afterwards. The noodles with pork and pickled greens featured a clear broth that actually had great flavor, rather than the standard salty, watery liquid that accompanies many clear-broth noodle dishes in Houston's China Town. Though it wasn't my favorite dish, I can easily recommend it as a great noodle soup. To top it all off, this place prices pretty farily, too. As the only place I've yet to visit in Houston that can serve great Xin Jiang food, I'd easily come in if I had a craving for skewers, and I'm excited to try some of the other dishes. This is a solid place for a variety of BBQ skewers and authentic Xin Jiang dishes. We came in pretty close to closing time but the owners/servers were very nice and accommodating. As for the food itself, we ordered beef, lamb, chicken gizzard, and beef tendon skewers as well as the shredded pork and pickled cabbage noodle soup, big plate chicken, eggplant, and enoki mushrooms. The skewers were all seasoned well, but some of them were slightly tougher than expected. I did really enjoy the firm and springy texture of the gizzards and the elasticity of the tendons. The eggplant was nice and tender, topped with flavorful minced garlic. The noodle soup and big plate chicken both tasted pretty authentic, and the big plate chicken came with a decently-sized portion of plain, flat noodles on the side to be mixed into the semi-spicy sauce to taste. I only had a couple of complaints about the dishes- I felt that the seasoning on the enokis was a little overpowering and I wish that the flat noodles which came with the big plate chicken could've been more al dente. Overall, I'd say that Xin Jiang BBQ mostly lived up to my expectations. Western Chinese cuisine at its best (that's where the lamb and cumin come in - from the middle east influence), with the Lamb Skewers perhaps being one of the best things you will ever put in your mouth. Or rather, put Xin your mouth. If you've tried those carts in Flushing NYC (such as Xin Jiang) then you know wussup (sorry, Laci Kay brainwashing issues). Well this is like the sit-down restaurant version of those. You need to come and try it. If you take a girl (or boy) here on a date with you who happens to be dolled up like a porn star (because that's her thing and who are you to say it can't be her thing), then be warned that all the male employees (and, really, the girls too) will ogle and gasp the entire time. But maybe that's the point. Beef skewers also good but not as much as lamb. Chives amazing. The Mushroom skewers (both the cheap one, probably better, and the expensive one) are bizarre and sensational and not like mushrooms you've ever had before. So sauteed and marinaded and dripping with flavour. Yummmmm. I found all the food Xintillating, to be honest. And don't forget that Fish in Hot Oil dish (see my pic). It's not a skewer but it's so good that you won't care. But let me not obskewer the main reason you came here. Lamb Cumin! As an aside, why is Xindiana so Republican? It's cheap by the skewer, but it adds up fast, so be careful or you'll spend too much. It's worth it though. It's a favourite of Frank Xinatra and Nancy Xinatra, as well as Xinbad the Xailor, and Xindy Crawford too. One of the best places to eat in Houston, and open late night to boot (an hour or two later than most places in Bellaire-Chinatown). Normally I'd go crazy over meat that is grilled in any kind of style. So it's a rare occasion that I would actually be turned away from grilled meat. You would think a restaurant that claims its specialty in their name would actually be good at what they claim. But I didn't feel that way with Xin Jiang at all. As soon as we saw the skewers being served, I had already noticed how shriveled up and dry they look, as well as the same thick coat of chili flakes on all of them. First bite into a beef skewer and I proved myself correct. The beef skewers were way too overcooked, making it incredibly dry and chewy. The beef tendons were even worse, and weren't even chew-able. Just when I thought they couldn't possibly season the skewers any heavier than this, I took a bite of the enoki mushroom. The layer of chili flakes on top was SO THICK, I thought the chili flakes were seasoned with enoki mushrooms instead... After seeing all the yummy pics of the skewers, I was excited to try this place. We ordered lamb, tendons, chicken gizzards skewers, enoki mushrooms, spicy chicken with these thick noodles, and shredded potatoes with vinegars. I'm not much fan of Chinese food. The food was a bit of a disappointment. I don't think it was exceptional but wasn't too bad either. The meat on the spicy chicken was a little thick and not soft. There were a lot of veggies in there that I didn't bothered to eat. The noodles, however, were fresh and I like that it had this sort of thickness and a chewy texture. The lamb skewers were good. I wasn't a fan of the tendons or chicken gizzards. Nothing special about it. The vinegar potatoes were interesting but something were lacking about it. the only thing I did like was the enoki mushrooms. Interesting spices and tasted delicious on the mushrooms. The place isn't that spacious. It got a little more crowded through the night. The service was the usual. Every now and then the waiter will come by and pour you more water. Stepped out of my comfort zone with this one to go with a friend who wanted to go here. Food is good, but be careful and read the menu closely or you may end up ordering something you don't want. Didn't happen to me but happened to a guy at the next table. read more

A good friend with good taste recommended this bbq place to us. I really haven't experienced a lot of Chinese bbq. The place is small, but we found a seat right away. We ordered a mix of 2 beef skewers, 2 lamb skewers, and 2 enoki mushroom skewers along with the west lake soup with mushrooms and a combination chow mein. The skewers do tend to be a little spicy and are quite small for the $1.25 price tag, but flavored quite well. My favorite was the enoki mushrooms, it has so much flavor and come on a plate. These are the types of mushrooms you typically put in hot pot. The combination mein has shrimp, chicken and beef. It was like typical chow mein but had a nice stir fry flavor. The soup was pretty good too but it comes with a lot of black fungus mushrooms and other atypical soup items. Service was typical for China Town but they gave us a free grilled brocolli heart which was pretty good and the barley tea was cheap with free refills. Overall, I would come visit to try out more skewers as they had a lot of organ meats. read more

Came here for dinner Monday with a girlfriend. I've been wanting to try this spot but just never made it. It is located in a strip plaza where Jusgo grocery store is. We ordered: 11 Lamb skewers 5 chicken gizzards 1 chicken heart 1 king oyster mushroom 1 enoki mushroom 1 side of rice 1 egg white, mushroom, bamboo, and ground pork soup I was so hungry everything was great. Definitely the lamb was a favorite and the enoki mushroom got crispy. Their house seasoning is great, it looks spicy but it's not. They did have great beer specials but I passed on it. I will definitely be coming back here with my dad. He was the one that got me into eating gizzards, hearts, kidneys etc. =] read more

Went here late and wanted to order something that had variety. Ended up ordering the combination fried rice and even decided to take some of it to-go knowing that I'd probably crave some more of it in the morning. Good for a first visit! read more
