I've been going to XYZ since the days of Xiao. Hieu (and Samson!) then bought the shop and continued the great work and service. Now, one of their veteran mechanics has purchased the shop and is carrying on the service I've come to expect (I hate to say it, but I'm very bad with names and will have to interact with him two or three more times before his name will stick). He just serviced my truck and gets the RAV4 back in next week for standard maintenance. All the vehicles I've owned have gone there. My 09 RAV4 has never been to any other shop! I've been taking my vehicles to XYZ, exclusively, for almost 10 years / since they were at their former location on 30th, and there's a reason for that... Hieu and the guys are amazing, and I sincerely feel fortunate to have found such a trustworthy mechanic / auto shop. Whether it's an oil change / routine scheduled maintenance, major repairs like the dreaded 100k Subaru timing belt, or (most recently) replacing a burned out AC compressor, they have *always* done great work at a fair & competitive price, while providing stellar customer service. Unlike anywhere else I've taken my vehicles in the past, including two separate Bay Area Subaru Service Deparments, Hieu ALWAYS lets me know, months in advance, if something more costly is coming up (brakes, tires, major scheduled service intervals, etc etc), as well as roughly what it will cost. They have also fixed or replaced minor things (a bumper cover clip, an o ring, etc) as a courtesy / free of charge, while doing other work. Good luck finding another shop that will provide this level of customer service, let alone the service department at a dealership. I stopped calling around for quotes from other shops, years ago, because I'm more concerned with the quality of work & service, than I am with finding the lowest possible cost or saving a few bucks. I trust they're always going to quote me a fair price for whatever work I need to have done, and years of patronage have proven this, time & time again. XYZ Motors offered me a 10% discount if I paid with cash and then when it was time to pay they changed the discount to 5% and told me they didn't offer me 10%. Since the agreement was reached on a phone call I don't have proof or a contract but this agreement change broke my trust with them. Even though they seem to do good work, it's vital that I trust the word of my mechanic and I will look for a different shop next time I need maintenance or repair. read more

Sorry to say I have no reason to go back to XYZ. About 5 or 6 years ago my boyfriend and I found this business on Yelp. We were impressed by reviews so we went. We had good experiences and made it our regular mechanic when we lived closer. However, my last 2 experiences with two different cars changed my opinion of this business. If you are interested, you can read my lengthy reviews. With my last experience, I took a 2006 Mazda 3 for a diagnostic. The car's transmission had recently been replaced at another shop. Hieu told me he thought my car didn't even need a transmission. He thought it needed a Transmission Control Module (TCM). This diagnostic and repair cost me almost $980. I drove 11 miles after picking up the car and the check engine light reappeared along with all symptoms. I emailed him and he advised me to take it to Mazda for a diagnostic. I did and Mazda concluded that the wrong transmission was installed. There was a harness clearly not connected to anything. I was dealing with the Bureau of Automotive Repair because Mazda recommended I file a complaint for the shop that did the transmission work. The BAR agent asked me for paperwork for all repairs done. When he saw the XYZ receipts he said "This shop owes you a refund too. They misdiagnosed your car." I thought I could reason with Hieu myself. So I wrote to him via email. He said something like I really think your car needed that repair...no refund. I was overwhelmed with fights with shops because I have to take the transmission shop to court so I stalled. I told Hieu that BAR told me this warranted a claim and he said "If you need to file a complaint with BAR I understand." I gave it some thought and was busy dealing with the other shop and trying to repair the car. Months later, I filed a BAR complaint, as promised. The same BAR agent who told me I was due a refund managed my case. He scolded me for not filing it months earlier. When I discussed it with the agent, I told him I was okay with 1/2 a refund because Hieu bought a part for my car. Although, I'm not convinced it was necessary. He went to XYZ. He told me the owner (Hieu) didn't put up a fight "I was in and out of there in 10 minutes." He agreed to pay half a refund. So I guess he needed to hear it from a BAR agent. I emailed Hieu my address so he could send me a check. No response, no check. I called and left a message telling him I was going to tell the BAR agent he didn't respond or follow through. No response after 2 weeks, so I told the agent. The BAR agent went again and I finally got a check. NEVER again XYZ! Take responsibility for your mistakes. I was willing to oversee the mechanical problems or mistakes (car 1, a Honda, was overheating on the freeway) but not the denial and difficulty negotiating with this shop. read more

So I had been driving on some squeaky brakes for quite some time ( smart I know ) in my 2011 Chevy Cruze. The pads finally wore down and the brakes began to grind one day on my way home after work. Pulled in to the grocery outlet parking lot right across the street from XYZ because I knew the longer I'd drive my car with grinding brakes, i would be more likely putting myself and others on the road at risk. FIRST IMPRESSIONS: walked in around 4:30 pm (end of the work day for most). The garage was clean, well organized, and the mechanics were attentive to their work. Also, all employees were wearing masks. For how busy as they were and the hour I stopped in, I was very pleased to be greeted with a warm "how may I help you today?" I Asked the gentleman that was working at the desk if I could have them check my brakes due to the noise it was making. Without hesitation he said "yeah, sure. Just pull the car in and we'll check for you." Literally as soon as I handed them my keys they began to work on diagnosing the issue. After they removed the front wheel to expose the brake. The mechanic called me over to show me what the issue was. That meant a lot to me since some just want you to take them for their word. This person took extra time to actually show me the problem. I walked back to my job to wait for my ride to come get me since my car wasn't going to be ready that day. Suddenly I realized I accidentally left my work badge in my car. So I walked back to go get it, and when I got there the crew was already servicing my vehicle! (Not the brakes though that wouldn't be ready until the next day, but read on to see what they were working on) PRICE and Results: When I was told I was going to need new brakes I held my breathe because I knew a total brake replacement can be expensive. The quote they gave me to get a new front brake pad set AND my front brake rotor installed came out to... $380 I was so happy with the price and impressed with the service, I asked him to throw in an oil change and windshield wiper replacement as well. Which brought my grand total up to... $488.73 (see attached photo for breakdown) it's a great day at the mechanics when you're spending less than half a grand. Right? I picked up my car today and am very pleased I don't have to listen to squeaky brakes anymore. Change oil notification is off the dash and my windshield wipers are installed ready to go for a rainy day. Thanks so much XYZ MOTORS for your attentiveness, speed of service, and care. I took my car to Honda Oakland and without even doing a brake inspection, the service advisor told me I should replace the brake pads because they were at 5mm and 3mm 14,000 miles prior and probably needed to be replaced at a cost of $1100. I declined and looked up the yelp reviews for XYZ since it was close by. The reviews are PHENOMENAL! I called and Huey was able to get me in right away and quoted me a price $700 LESS than Honda quoted. I dropped my car off and a few minutes later Huey called to let me know "your brakes have plenty of life left"! Huey and XYZ will be my new go to for all of my Honda service and repairs! Absolutely no desire to go to a dealership and after reading reviews for a few other locations, I finally settled on XYZ based on the reviews and close proximity to where I live. Entire process was fairly quick, coordinated with Hieu (pronounced Huey) who was very responsive via email to lock down a service date and time two days later. For reference my vehicle is a 2016 Mazda CX3. Needed check engine light investigated or diagnosed. As luck would have it, the light was no longer on at the time of service, it had been on for a week and a half prior! Fortunately Hieu seemed to believe I was telling the truth and believed he could still figure out the reason for the warning light. Sure enough he was able to, turns out the battery was at very low capacity to which he was able to switch and install with a new one per my authorization. Looking back, it's actually a huge benefit the check engine light was triggered before the actual battery died, which is what usually happens with all my other prior vehicles. Great shop, super nice, reasonable prices. My Honda Accord was making a wierd rumbling/bumping sound and I had taken it to the dealership to get it checked. The diagnostic fee was ridiculous and the diagnosis was even more crazy expensive. I took it to XYZ where they took a look- and the mechanic even was nice enough to drive with me to identify the issue- and they identified a completely different issue that was not brought up by the dealership! Great service. Hieu was very responsive and helpful. I needed a side mirror replaced after it had been hit backing into a garage. Mazda Service wanted to replace the whole unit for $750. There are several parts in the mirror unit and Hieu helped me determine which were reusable (for example the mirror itself was perfectly fine) vs which needed to be replaced. He then ordered the replacement parts from Mazda for me. Parts plus labor came out to $374.. just under half-price of what Mazda wanted to charge. Thanks XYZ team! read more

I recently purchased tires from a 'reputable' place in Berkeley and when I went in for my first complimentary tire rotation, they told me that my rear brake pads were 1mm and needed to be changed asap. I live in Oakland so I figured I'd take my car to my partner's usual mechanic place in Oakland (XYZ) so that it would be cheaper to uber/lyft back and forth. When I called XYZ and told them the situation, even though they book a week out, they realized that my car needed to be seen asap so they fit me in that day. When Alfredo looked at my brake pads and rotors, he showed me his mirror and how he measured the wear... my rear pads were actually at 4mm, not 1mm, and he said I had prob another 3k miles. I.e. - yes, they need to be replaced, but not so urgently and you can take the next 3k miles to get some quotes and figure out where you want to go. I SUPER appreciate his care AND his honesty. He could have easily just taken the job and my money, but he did the ethical thing and told me the honest situation with proof (mirror & measurement). Fast, honest, reliable service. Took care of my 1999 Lexus using quality products and a completed the suspension (struts and shocks and wheel bearings). I didn't have to ask for an alignment or tire rotation, they knew it was necessary. Only improvement opportunity is to eliminate/reduce/apply as credit the inspection fee which was $160, but most places are charging for inspection too. read more

Our 2012 Honda Odyssey was having brake problems and I gave XYZ Motors a call based on the recommendation of a family friend who used to own an repair shop in downtown Oakland. Huey was very friendly on the phone and was able to squeeze my appointment in on Friday morning. The shop is clean and organized and I really appreciated the clear communication throughout the day as they tested different things. He walked me through what steps he recommended, incrementally ruling things out by starting with the easiest and least expensive options, and getting my approval for the costs before moving to next step. In the end, after trying and ruling out the simpler low-cost fixes they determined that our van needed a repair that would have to be done at the Honda Dealership. Since they couldn't fix our problem directly, they didn't charge the full amount he had originally quoted, but even if they had, the price was very reasonable and everything was itemized and described in the receipt. Overall it was a good experience and and I wouldn't hesitate to take our cars there again for other diagnostics or repairs in the future. read more

When I called XYZ Motors about my issue late in the afternoon, Huey said I could bring it in for a diagnostic test right away.
