I have a few times waited a hour and a half - most of the time it's half an hour - to get my hair cut here for a reason: Bernard does it right. I wish they took reservations and cash only is not ideal, but after I get home, I'm glad I went here. In all honestly, I'd plan for 30 minutes on the cut and 45 minutes wait, but worth it. All I have to say is that I have continued to go to this place since I discovered it. At this point, I have more than Yelp 20 check-ins here, so yeah, I'm a fan. read more

I have been coming here for my haircut since the start of my residency. That was 13 years ago. Bernard still has the most efficient and reasonably priced service around. I've been back for the first time says the covid-19 pandemic started, and I have to make a note a saying that this place has the cleanest most the elaborate safety procedure around of any business. Went for my first haircut here and was pleased. Reasonably priced, no frills, solid men's haircut (longer on top, shorter on sides, nothing fancy). Was able to make an appointment without a wait, but it might get busier as Covid lets up. Owner takes safety/cleanliness seriously - he wears a mask and a mask is required for patrons at all times, disposable plastic hair apron, et cetera - but it wasn't a big deal and it was a good mix of feeling safe while still getting a quick haircut (approx. 20 minutes in the chair). I can't criticize Bernard too much because he's a great guy who makes great conversation. However, his disability really doesn't allow him to give a quality haircut anymore. Because of his leg, he has to stand back and balance himself on the customer's chair, and is hacking away than really giving the cut the precision and styling / fading a lot of customers will be expecting. There were many times too where I felt close to getting cut because he wasn't able to work up close. I feel bad about this review because the condition is out of his control, but customers should manage their expectations come in. He can still chop everything short all around in his current state, but trying to get even a minimally styled crew cut or Ivy League or fade, etc. really is not going to be possible. read more

The bad reviews of this place are hilarious. I drive a half hour from Norwalk to get my haircut here. I feel inclined to review your bad reviews: 1. Cash only is pretty normal at most Barber shops I've been to. I usually ask ahead of time anytime I go somewhere new, and can't make it to Y. 2. Talking to clients is good for business, and it keeps people coming back. If that's not important to you (it is to me) don't come here. 3. I always come here expecting to wait. They take their time and do a great job with the haircut and connecting with you. Also, there's people constantly walking through the door here while you wait. This is because it's popular, and it's popular because they're the best. 4. Managing reservations for the kind of demand these guys have, would be impossible. I am an unapologetic proponent of this classic-style barbershop. It is indeed the cheapest haircut within walking distance of Yale's campus by a few bucks. I appreciated the ambience created by old-school Yale athletic swag. The barbers there have always been exceptionally friendly, and the conversations they have with each other and with the clientele is an integral part of the experience. A word of caution: they only take cash, so have a $20 on hand so you don't have to run down the street to the nearest ATM, as I have had to do. Walk-ins welcome. This place is pretty good. It's just like your standard barber shop run by a couple of surly dudes. The haircut was good, the price was pretty standard ($16), and the service was ultra fast. Literally, it was like this: I ran through the door and did a mid-air flip. While I was in the air, the dude took out the clippers and did the first round of cuts on my hair. Then I touched the back wall and started running towards the door. The dude whipped out a katana and finished the job on my haircut. As I tossed him the money, all I saw were doves everywhere and people firing handguns and then combs flying through my hair and somehow I was outside... John Woo style. Cash only. Always a wait when I go. These are the only two downsides to this excellent establishment. $20 for haircut, plus tip. I've been two times now and have had haircuts by both men working there (John is the younger, I didn't catch the name of the older man). It's much harder than you might think to find non-Asian haircutters who know their way around my unforgivingly poky, straight hair. Both have given me some of the best haircuts I've ever had, and they are quick and efficient about it (whereas some other New Haven haircutters have given me some of my worst haircuts). Warning: Attention all potential customers!!! You know the feeling you get before you walk into a new haircut place that you've never tried before it's that feeling of apprehension I guess you could say it kind of like a evil foreboding well that's the exact feeling that I got before I walked into this place.! Anyways not following my gut instinct I walked into the place anyways figuring hey they've been here forever they must do a quality job I see all the college kids with nice haircuts they probably get their hair cut here! Right? Wrong! This place was a freaking hack shack! Some gay guy cut my hair nice guy terrible haircut in fact the people there are really cool however being cool and being a good barber are two totally different things anyways long story short I was working on the hard part comb over all I needed was the sides blended up conservatively not asking much no low fade nothing fancy I walked out of there in much worse shape than I walked in now my top priority is getting this darn thing fixed hopefully it salvageable I'll find out tomorrow so if you're looking for a high quality haircut I would highly advise you against going to this place by the way I'm Filipino and Italian my hair is poker straight if your hair is anything like mine I would steer clear away from this place because obviously it takes a trained professional to cut Asian peoples hair thank you! read more

I would recommend Y Cutting particularly if you are a college student or a retired person who does not value your own time, if you value being treated disrespectfully by the store manager, and if you are seeking poor-to-mediocre cuts. After walking a mile in 90+ degree heat and arriving at 10:10AM to see an open sign and the hours listed opening time for Monday as 10:00AM, the door was locked. Having arrived without anyone else waiting in view, I decided to wait. I waited about 5 minutes and then the manager casually walked over with Starbucks in hand and tried to say he saw another patron's bike had been locked in front a while ago, so maybe that patron should go before me. I pointed out that I had been waiting in line and arrived first. I also pointed out that if he had known the other patron had arrived during the store's open hours and he kept the door locked anyway--an extra 10 minutes while he went next door to casually get himself a coffee, then I'd prefer to go elsewhere that values its customers a bit more than that. The manager stared at me, tried to backtrack and rather than offer an apology to any of the three customers (including me) who were still waiting, he offered to let me go first. I politely declined, let the other customer go first, and shared that I'd find a haircut elsewhere. It's unfortunate the manager values customers so little and yet, given that New Haven is a college town, he likely understands that there's a near constant influx of new students who either don't know what they're in for or tolerate being treated so disrespectfully because they're here such a brief time for school. As a human being and a customer, I feel justified in expecting a decent minimum of regard and consideration so despite my having been a customer for a few years here, I won't be returning here again. read more

Got there at 4:15...two employees who were sitting there however; sitting on their cell phones said they were "closed". But the sign said 4:30. They clearly didn't feel like working. My son is 11 - just needed a quick buzz cut. Never takes more than 10 minutes max. I'll never try here again. read more

I have never left a review before for anything. Not Amazon, Netflix, YouTube, nothing. But this barber gave me the worst haircut I've ever received, possibly the worst I've ever seen. As in I had a whole tuft of hair left on the back and several notches cut in areas of longer hair. What's worse, I had initially asked him to "even it out and cut as little as possible." He also took a very long time and stopped several times to watch COMMERCIALS for a basketball game recap. He seems to be a good-natured guy, and I will give him credit for being nice enough to fix up my haircut when I went back and showed him the part in the back that he didn't cut, but he really just made is worse. I've never had a haircut so bad that people couldn't even pretend it was good, they just laughed at me and assumed it was a joke. I had no choice but to go to another place to correct it, which meant basically giving me a buzz cut, and still there were areas that were cut too near to my scalp (I had pretty long hair before, for perspective). "Salon J" was the place, if you're wondering. Faster, much better (it's a literal salon) and CHEAPER at $17, which was a big shock. I actually saw a few people (all Caucasian men) walking out with clean looking cuts. If you have rigid Asian or Asian-like hair do not do here. read more

I asked to have my puffy beard just trimmed in a certain way and the dude gave it just as much attention -if not more- as I give. Clipping away with scissors, rather than the clipper. The owner always seems to have an attitude towards people he doesn't know. Also the younger barber is better whereas the older one don't know how to cut. I gave him an old picture of mine and he churned out something completely different, not even the length matched up. Let me first start by saying that this review is primarily for a SHAVE. The shop itself is your typical barber shop and the barbers seemed fairly nice. But the shave was not good. Before I got my shave it seemed like no one in the shop wanted to be the one to shave me, like I was just inconveniencing them. Other cons: the guy used Barbasol (I don't think they had a brush and soap or even a hot lather dispenser.) While he used a straight blade, it was one with a replaceable blade. (Not necessarily bad, but not what I was hoping for.) He used a hot towel, but he didn't leave it for more than 30 seconds at most. He did only one pass. Which means not only was this not a close shave but he also completely missed shaving portions of my face. I had to finish the job when I got back home. One small consolation was that he used a nice after shave toner that felt great and smelled good. For $20 you should go somewhere else for a shave. read more

Worst haircut ever!! These guys ought to shear sheep hair

I walked in with two people ahead of me on a Friday afternoon with two barbers on duty. A few minutes after I sat down two guys walk into a barber shop.....They asked how long before they could get a haircut. Apparently the barber had heard the joke before, so he said "15 minutes". They scoffed, but waited. As I was walking out the door 15 minutes later they were being served. Getting a good haircut doesn't mean waiting an hour and a half. Thanks guy. Was $16 + tip I'm taking two stars however because cash only is really bull@#$. All these NH businesses that take cash only. They're popular, they can afford to price their products to make up for whatever tiny credit card fees are charged and not lose clients. So why not take cards?
