Worst haircut ever, I asked for a buzz cut with a 3 on all sides and the woman doing the haircut ended up giving me bald spots. Super uneven and the spots on top of my head speak for itself. Also got a nice razor burn on the back of my neck from the dry clippers on there. She was also very pushy with how much I was going to tip her in front of the only other customer there. Feel like I got ripped off and tipped her way more than I should've. Never going back and I hope nobody else does. read more

I travel quite a bit for work, and I have had my haircut at dozens of places around the world, but I have never had a worse haircut than the haircut that I got today at Phil's. I received my haircut from an Asian lady that used a comb and clippers without a guard for the entire haircut. Because of this the haircut was incredibly uneven. For the beard trim, she basically tea bagged me with a peanut clipper for 10 minutes, taking chunks out of my beard like she has never trimmed a beard before. I've been trying to grow my hair out for several months and came in just for some cleanup. Gave specific instructions for a low fade, basically, just trim around my ears. They forgot the instruction and started a high fade, almost skin. When I told them it was too high, they said "oh well it's already short, nothing you can do," and kept insisting I look better. This place is fantastic. Silvio is the best. Clean, professional, yet barbershop charm. I used to go to a salon every 3 weeks and plunk down $40 plus tip. I tried out Silvio, and, WOW!!! What a difference. The guy really knows how to cut men's hair. Also, they take their time here and make sure they get it right. This means old school straight-edge razors and hot shave foam. Walked in around 4 or 5 pm on a Monday, got a super nice cut, for a super good price, in a super short amount of time. That's basically all you'd want in a barber shop. The famed Silvio wasn't available and because I really needed a haircut I ended up just going with whoever was available. Mirian really hooked it up. She whacked through 3 months of growth that had me looking like a cleaning duster. Number 1 on the side, comb the top to the side. I love it, wake up in the morning, throw a tad bit of hair product in there, comb it to the side and I'm out of the house in a minute. No waits if you go off-peak, reasonable prices ($19), really professional people, and a great location means I've found my new go-to barber. Was hoping I'd get a straight razor shave for the neck, but I'm guessing I'll have to wait for Silvio for that. read more

Looking at the review here I probably got the bad barber. She was not very attentive. She also was not meticulous with the electric clipper, I didn't go to hairstyling school, but the angle at which she approach the skin was definitely very awkward. I'm surprise that my head wasn't bleeding... She just seem to be out of it most of the time. Price is not so much a problem for me, it's the worth. If it was a $50 haircut and worth it, I would be there everyday. But this was a less than $10 haircut charged at a $21 price. Definitely not worth it and will not go back. read more

This is the best barbershop I have been to in all of CT. Miriam has been cutting my hair for years, however, I moved to New York 8 months ago. Since then, I have tried several different barber shops and no one could cut my hair like Miriam. I needed to come back and see her to get my hair cut by her amazing hands. Today, she cut my hair and I feel like a new man. I will continue to come back to Miriam at this new location in New Haven every month. The trip is worth it. Silvio is an outstanding barber too, and a gentleman. Also, the new location is super clean, is next to several good restaurants to eat lunch, and they have Wifi. But they charged me $40 for a cut that even the person who cut my hair described as a "men's cut," even though men's cuts are only supposed to cost $21. I made an appointment for an updo before a very important wedding for a good friend of mine. When I showed up they told me that the updo lady was actually not there and that they had coordinated with the Phil's around the corner to do the updo. I thought that was fine, so I walked around the block. When I showed up, though, that Phil's was totally taken aback because nobody had ever called them or coordinated with them. They were very apologetic but were fully booked. I called the original Phil's back and they still wouldn't help me. I asked them why they had accepted my appointment booking?! I couldn't find anywhere else to get my hair done before the wedding, which was really disappointing. I definitely felt like I hadn't been treated correctly. If they had just told me earlier that they couldn't take me, I would have had time to find somewhere else to get my hair done. Instead, by waiting to cancel on me when I showed up, I was left without any solutions. read more

This is hands-down the best place for a haircut in New Haven. I tried a bunch of different barber shops in town for a year before finding Phil's, and have been a regular at Phil's for the past three years. Miriam is the GREATEST--always gives a professional cut and is also very friendly. Each time I step out of Phil's I feel like a new man, energized and confident. I had a great experience there with Miriam. She's always so professional, perfectionist and she knows how to please her clients since we always get the look we went looking for. I'd gladly recommend my hairdresser Miriam and her work and the rest of the staff that work at this new and convenient location at Whitney Ave. Prices are more than reasonable and the quality of the service will delight you. One downside may be the poor advertisement and displays at the door and front of the salon. Amazing experience!!!!! Had my hair cut by Silvio and he was extremely helpful and completely salvaged my hair from a previous barbershop a month ago. I told Silvio what I usually do with my hair and without question new exactly what I meant. A little expensive for a cut ($21) but you get what you pay for and I will never complain with a great haircut . Definitely will be going back to Silvio in the future. read more

Most people really like them and they have been around for a long time. Let's not one bad experience, which seems not be the normal, negatively influence your decision. I always think it is pretty easy to do what I want. Trim my hair: sides shorter than the top. You give clear instructions for what you want. The guy who cut my hair did the opposite. Seriously the sides are longer than the hair in the top of my head. It is very disappointing when people are so careless and just do what they want.
