My wife and I visited Yagumo Sushi after seeing glowing reviews on Instagram. We were genuinely excited to try a new spot together but what followed was one of the worst dining experiences we've had in years. The food? Practically inedible. It started with a bean sprout dish drowning in soy sauce--salty, limp, and uninviting. We ordered several items, including a scallop hand roll and a tuna avocado hand roll, both of which were so unpleasant we couldn't get past the first bite. Everything was soaked in overpowering sauces, masking any trace of fresh fish. I honestly don't think I had a single piece of real seafood the entire night. We also tried a "special roll" whose name I've forgotten probably because I wanted to forget the taste too. Another one-bite-and-done situation. Our total bill came to $68, and we left most of it untouched. The ambiance only added to the chaos. One TV was playing what looked like an off-brand MMA fight grainy, awkward, and totally mismatched with the vibe. Another screen had the local news running, while a static-filled radio station played sad, moody music in the background. It felt like we were dining in someone's garage during a power outage. And then there were the hygiene red flags. I watched our server sneeze into his hand and continue working without washing up. One of the kitchen staff entered the restroom and returned so quickly, it was physically impossible he washed his hands. That alone should've been our cue to leave. This wasn't just a disappointing meal it was a complete breakdown in food quality, cleanliness, and basic hospitality. We will never return, and I strongly urge others to stay away. Finally tried this place dine in. Went on a Friday night and called again to make sure that there's no wait time. Personal who answered the phone said that there will be a table available and would reserve it for us so I told him I'll be there in a few mins since I'm already in the area. Got there and sat in a corner table in front of the tv. The place has a few tables and bar se. They have photos on the wall of people who were able to finish the level 10 spice. They're known for having that spice level on some of their rolls. We ordered a couple of tuna rolls, salmon roll, rainbow roll, L roll and some hand rolls - blue crab and avocado and spicy scallop level 3. We have no complaints with regard to taste and quality of the fish. I took out 1 star because my pet peeve with sushi cut rolls is when they're not rolled tightly. My son's L roll was loose so it sort of falls apart when you pick it up with chopsticks. They also missed 1 appetizer I ordered. They didn't charge me for it so I didn't follow up anymore. I don't recall if I asked for the check or our server just handed it to us. He was attentive otherwise with refilling drinks and the place isn't big so it's not hard to get their attention. The restroom is right in front of the seating area and the waiter came out while rubbing his seemingly unwashed hands on his apron and proceeded to serve our food right after... also randomly pacing around for some reason. Mussels and scallops were covered in mayo and cheese and even the California roll (which is incredibly hard to mess up) tasted like chemicals. We wanted to like this place and had high hopes but left with a $60 bill and food 95% untouched after the initial bites. Hidden gem!!! Came here last minute with a friend for an impromptu celebratory dinner. Found through Yelp.. of course!! I initially called to ask if they do reservations.. no reservation needed.. perfect!! Arrived at the establishment at around 6pm. We were greeted and seated right away. Employees all wearing cloth face masks as so were we. Menus were given and the server took out drink orders right away. The menu was simple and straight forward. As Japanese cuisine should be. We ordered several dishes which arrived timely. The dishes we ordered were excellent. The rolls and hand rolls that we ordered were so nicely filled. Definitely did not cheap out on the ingredients. The grilled veggies we ordered were well grilled and very tasty. Price point was excellent as well. Totally worth it. Parking is available. Restaurant located in a strip mall. **my ONLY issue: I noticed the sushi chiefs wearing clothe face masks however the masks were not covering their nose. Which defeats the purpose of the face mask. Meh... that's basically the whole thing haha. Don't get me wrong, the food wasn't horrible by any means, it was actually pretty good... but it wasn't great, and not too memorable. The disappointing part really came from the service, or lack there of. We told them from the time we got there that we were in a bit of a rush, but that didn't stop the overly judgmental and somewhat bitchy (sorry, there's not other word to describe it) waitresses to take their sweet time when taking our order and even bringing us drinks. It took so long that at some point I had to insist that i take our order to go. But they brought my companion's food in the normal bowls and mine in to go stuff. Since we had to wait until he was finished anyways, I ate my food... rather quicker than I like in the to go stuff. Rather than bring the bill over, like I had requested 3x, they decided to lean against the cash register, and stare at me while I ate. Both of them. As if I couldn't see them, and as if they expected me to get up and go with my food instead of paying for it. This is a very casual sushi restaurant. Parking lot seemed limited but I had no issues. I really enjoyed the BLUE CRAB HAND ROLL. My fiancé, brother, some friends and I had come here for dinner based off the reviews. Yagumo is tucked away in the corner of a little "strip mall" on the corner of the street. There's plenty of parking in front. We came at night so maybe we just got lucky with the parking. We got seated right away which was great. There were two other tables there so the seating was plentiful. Once our party all arrived, we ordered within 10 minutes or so. We were all intrigued by the spicy challenge so my brother and friend got #8 spicy level hand rolls. After we ordered, we waited. And waited. And waited more. They don't bring out food as it's ready, but instead wait for all food to be ready together. It wasn't until the teriyaki chicken (I know. Not what you order at a sushi place but wasn't for me.) came out and we made a comment that we were surprised that his food came out before our sushi that they pushed to get our food out. It probably took a solid 25-30 minutes before our food came out. Aside from the time it took for our food to come out, we ended up having a lot of food that we couldn't have because they had run out. The rolls were all just okay. I wasn't a huge fan of the surprise ninja roll or whatever it was called. Also the #8 is SPICY AF. I tried a little bit of the fish and my mouth was on fire. I know I've reviewed sushi places before and given them a one star but compared to this spot, those places are 4 and 5 star. Ordered 3 hand rolls and one cut... hand rolls had 99% rice, 1 % fish, but Even that 1% fish tasted very bad! Bottom Line: GREAT prices for sushi, variety of rolls, and their signature ninja handroll is bomb. OK let me just start by saying this place is a hidden gem okurrrrr. I completely ditched SushiStop after I found Yagumo and SushiStop upped their prices... the prices are literally the same for more food and better quality. Food: They have a large selection of rolls, and the food is fresh. My rolls usually come up to 4-5 dollars for your standards and double for the special ones... and you get A LOT. Try the ninja if you haven't already. The only thing I'll say is sometimes things can be a little mayo heavy so I'd ask if you want to avoid that. Also- they serve delicious bean sprouts automatically as an appetizer. Atmosphere: Very very causal. I believe they do karaoke on Wednesday nights which is dope. You can also win a prize at their wheel or fortune like wheel LOL --- the things that excite me. Am I five? Service: I personally like sitting at the sushi bar the most or I usually take stuff to go. Oh, ninja handrolls...how do I love thee?! Let me count the ways...Level 1, Level 2, Level 3! I seriously LOVE spicy food...so I need to try Level 4 & 5 next time I'm here. This place is a hole-in-the-wall kinda place with a big surprise - they have really good food. It's in a seedy little plaza/strip mall but if you blink you might miss it while driving through ghetto Van Nuys. (Yah, I can say that because I live in Van Nuys. LOL) I came here on a Sunday night and the parking lot is small. There is plenty of street parking if your okay with walking. Don't worry...It's a busy street area so you're safe. Hahaha :) Most of their sushi rolls are $7.95 which is good for my cheap ass. :) They don't have an extensively huge sushi menu but there's definitely enough to choose from. Here's our order: - Lobster Roll: $12.95 It was good but came with 8 really small pieces. - Red Dragon Roll: $9.95 Good and definitely worth the price. - Ninja Handroll: $3.50 They don't tell you what kind of fish because it's a secret, but that's fine because I loved it anyways. I doubt you'll see me trying their spicy food challenge but I will definitely try upper levels next time. LOL ;) - Spicy Salmon Handroll: $3.50 Yummy. Not as spicy as I would like but still good. - Dynamite in a shell: I loved the portion and presentation and the flavor was good, but I was weirded out by the rice which I thought I was gonna be okay with. I have been to this place countless times and it never disapoints, I would recommend checking business hours since i believe they are closed mondays and have split business hours during the week. They also have a special baked roll, I cant think of the name unless i see the menu but its beyond Yummy.
