I found Koku Sushi on TikTok, and honestly, places that blow up on social media usually don't live up to the hype. Even so, I had to see what all the fuss was about. They're known for their oversized nigiri and also have salmon, tuna, and toro boxes that are a really good value. Thankfully they still had the salmon and tuna boxes when we came, although the toro had already sold out. For around $15, getting a box with that much fish is hard to complain about. The fish was fresh, firm, and not overly fishy at all. Portions were generous, and I could see why people recommend this place. I'm usually not a roll person, but we tried one of their specialty rolls with trout, lemongrass, cucumber, and avocado. Definitely different from traditional Japanese flavors and maybe a little overpowering for some people, but I like bright, loud flavors, so I enjoyed it. We also got fried ice cream because I hadn't had it in forever. Tasted exactly how I remembered -- good for nostalgia, but probably not something I'd order every time. Apparently they also own the restaurant next door, which was already bookmarked for me, so now I definitely want to try that too. Next time I'm coming earlier for the toro box. I also saw people posting about their crack sauce, but nobody offered it to us, so I'll have to ask. Koku Sushi is a great new addition to the neighborhood and definitely worth checking out if you're nearby. It's the sister restaurant to Sri Siam Cafe, and while it's obvious they're still finding their rhythm as a newly opened spot, the effort and hospitality really stand out. I always try to support small businesses, so I came in with reasonable expectations--but I also like being objective. The biggest surprise? The nigiri. The cuts are thick. That's almost unheard of in LA, where many sushi spots slice fish paper-thin to stretch portions. Here, the portions are generous, and the fish was fresh, clean, and enjoyable. Is it the best sushi I've ever had? No. But as someone who eats a lot of sushi, I can confidently say it's solid and absolutely worth ordering. The Koku Roll was the only dish that missed the mark for me. It had a bit too much avocado, and the crispy onions weren't actually crispy, so they ended up taking away from the roll instead of adding to it. The restaurant itself is cozy, clean, and has a welcoming neighborhood feel. The staff couldn't have been friendlier--they're genuinely trying hard, and it shows. My only suggestion would be to turn the music up a little to give the space a bit more energy. Overall, Koku Sushi feels homemade in the best way: fresh, generous, and made with care instead of trying to be flashy. I live about five minutes away, so I'll definitely be back. Came here because I follow the Koku Sushi account on TikTok and finally got the chance to try it out for my mom's bday lunch! Safe to say it's one of the best places I've ever tried- this is coming from someone who's managed/partnered in ownership for sushi too. The fish quality is amazing and we got the garlic edamame (spicy) which had a really delicious blend of citrus and garlic. The salmon was not fishy at all and i requested half of the salmon box to be seared and it was, to perfection. Our server was super sweet, really attentive and the ambiance of the place is nice. Overall Koku is an absolutely SOLID new sushi spot with an incredible staff! I stopped by right at the beginning of lunch and placed a to-go order which was ready in about 10 minutes. I ordered the giant salmon and regular tuna box which had a special and the prices are definitely on point. The salmon was HUGE. Even with this size the nigiri is still tender, buttery, fresh, and delicious. The tuna was well cut, tender, and had that classic tuna taste and scent you love when the tuna is prepared fresh and right. The ONLY thing holding me back from a 5 star review is the rice. It was a bit dry where each nigiri was almost falling apart if i didn't pick it up or hold it together myself, and flavor wise it was a bit bland. I will definitely return and give them more tries and I don't think this will completely dissuade me from visiting so I'm hoping that it was just an off day since they were still new at the time of my visit :) read more

Got Koku sushi delivery tonight via Uber Eats after finding them on TikTok. Wow! This is probably my new favorite sushi spot in The Valley! We got the spicy tuna crispy rice, salmon box, tuna box, citrus silk roll, and the Shinjuku night roll. The crispy rice was still crunchy by the time we sat down to eat it! It was both of our faves. The salmon and tuna boxes both were very generous portions, and the fish tasted extremely fresh. We also loved the lemon on the citrus silk roll, and how all the flavors of the tuna, cream cheese, jalapeño, and onion all blended together well for the shinjuku roll. If I had to give any negative feedback, is that I wish they had packed more wasabi for us (we only got 3 small portions). Overall, can't wait to try more things from Koku! After much heartbreak when we saw Toshi sushi was gone, I was super excited to see a familiar face here: the chef from Super Ninja! Overall, this spot has new life and delicious sushi. My husband and I got a little bit of everything. We got a beef teriyaki bento box. Everything was tasty but I must ask: can we get the super ninja teriyaki sauce recipe? I was really disappointed with my order. I ordered the bluefin toro nigiri, and as soon as I opened it, it had a very strong fishy smell. I gave it a try anyway, but it also tasted overly fishy, which made me uncomfortable eating it, so I couldn't finish it. The salmon, on the other hand, was fresh and tasted great. I went to Koku during their soft opening week for a solo lunch. I'm very local to the area, and I frequented Toshi's when it was here. I was sad to see the location change hands, but after my lunch, I have very high hopes for Koku. To start, if you were ever a fan of Super Ninja on Sherman Way, you'll recognize the sushi chef at Koku as the former chef at Super Ninja, which further adds to the awesome lore of sushi in North Hollywood/Valley Village. The interior of this unassuming restaurant is very modern and minimalist. The focus is on the food and the experience. While the decor is sparse, it offers a quiet, almost meditative experience with the meal. I ordered a selection of nigiri, tuna, yellowtail, and unagi, plus the spicy tuna crispy rice and a Ginza Fire Roll. The most notable feature of the nigiri is the generous portion size. The yellowtail was mild in flavor, with a fresh texture. The tuna was meaty and robust in portion size, but mild and cooling in flavor. The unagi was delightful and cooked to an utter perfection that many sushi places seem to struggle with. The flavors here are all subtle, with few heavy or thick sauces. I can see finding myself here for a quick lunch of nigiri any day of the week. The price point on much of the nigiri does lean slightly high, but it is largely offset by the size of the cuts. The spicy tuna crispy rice was delightfully light, with fresh, crispy rice, another component that is sometimes rushed at other restaurants. It's clear that much care is taken to ensure consistency, not only in flavor but in shape and presentation as well. I wouldn't be upset if the spicy tuna were 10% spicier, but as it is, it's a star on the menu. The Ginza Fire Roll was hearty and, if I haven't said it enough, quite generous in portion size. The flavors were fresh and clean, with satisfying textures both inside and outside the roll. Overall, it's hard to be sad about Toshi being gone when in its place is Koku. It almost feels like they are taking special care to honor the legacy of the past while looking ahead toward a very bright future. The food is wonderful, the staff is attentive and warm, and the decor is sparse but well thought out. I'm very happy to have such a quality local sushi restaurant tucked away in a very unassuming location. read more

I have loved this place in the past, and ordered frequently. I will say my recent experience makes me hesitant to visit again. I ordered the toro box and received this (picture attached). I am really disappointed by the quality of the fish being mostly fat on half of the pieces, which is something I haven't experienced anywhere else. New spot. The owners of the Thai place next door, Sri Siam, have revamped and renamed the place. We are regulars at Sri Siam so we had to try the new restaurant and we will be back...soon. My wife is not a sushi person so she had the chicken teriyaki combo. The teriyaki was not oversauced, tender and moist. The tempura shrimp and veggies were light and crisp, not oily. A very full meal. My wife added a Mexican coke to go with it. I started with some halibut sushi. Classically cut with a little special ponzu sauce and green onion. The chef offered me a 2nd version with shiso leaf and a little caviar. I could eat those all night. I tried the crispy rice spicy tuna. 4 pieces. The rice had been freshly deep fried so it was crispy on the outside and creamy inside. A slice of avocado then the tuna and a spicy mayo. I liked the balance of it without it being too hot. Next was the Sri Siam roll which puts the herb sauce they use on the fried soft shell crab dish next door and put that on a spicy yellowtail roll. My favorite was an off menu item. I asked if they had fresh shima aji and received a beautiful plate of shima aji sushi with a perfect very light dipping sauce. For dessert we shared fried ice cream with fresh banana and blackberries. I expected good quality knowing the family that runs this place and Sri Siam next door. I did not expect the beautiful presentations for the sushi plates. Just so you know, no liquor license so no sake. And it's a small place in a strip mall NE corner of Vanowen and Coldwater. read more
