I LOVE Indian food and have eaten some outstanding meals in other cities. This was not one of those occasions. First of all we were not given menus at lunch. The hostess made it seem like it was the buffet or nothing. Well the buffet was not well stocked however they did replenish it while we were there. There were very limited offerings. I LOVE Yak! The lunch buffets is one of the best I've been to. Even though they don't have that much selection, the food here is quality. The past couple times I've been, they seem to rotate out some dishes, but I don't mind it much at all. All the food is cooked and seasoned well and it's always hot and fresh. Sometimes you notice buffet food getting cold or mushy, but Yak has proved the opposite each time I've been. Another great perk is that their lunch buffet is every day of the week! Some places just have it on weekdays, but if you're feeling especially carnivorous and wanting Indian/Nepali fare, this is the spot to go to in Mobile. The food here used to be really good. Used to be our favorite place to eat. We would drive over an hour to go here. Well, the past 2 times we went, the food has completely changed. I don't know if now they have a new chef or what? But it is terrible, we got the lamb Rogan. It was so watery only 3 pieces of meat, mostly only onion and potatoes. We also got chicken Tikka. And it was extremely greasy, very watery and hardly any meats. The naan bread was ridiculously hard. And then we got the tandoori chicken, which used to be amazing. Now it is so hard, it is basically inedible, you cannot eat it. The lamb Tikka masala taste it absolutely terrible it was the same tikka sauce as the chicken so it was extremely greasy and so watered down it tasted like spaghetti sauce from a jar ! I don't know what happened, but we are never going back here again. $86 wasted and don't even bother trying to call and complain because they never answer the phone, and when they do. Great little Indian/Nepalese cuisine. Large menu to choose from, catering to meat lovers and vegans. Can't go wrong with any of the curries or tandoor entrees. If you're just starting out with this cuisine, stay away from the Gundruk until your taste palette develops. I recommend the Momos to start off on Nepalese side. They are very similar to potstickers. For the Indian menu, Butter Chicken or Chicken Tikka Masala would be a great beginners choice. Vindaloo would be the next step. It's vinegar based and a bit fiery. To accompany your entree, I recommend a side of naan. They have a variety of different flavors with the bullet naan being my favorite. We always make it a point to stop here when we're in Mobile. It's delicious, the price is right, and the taste is delicious. I have never seen any indication that anything was less than fresh. My go-to is any of the saag plates, but we've also tried the biryanis, tikka masala dishes, and the goat curry. The naan is to die for - get the garlic and plain to share. read more

I have been wanting to try something very different. This is a great place if you're interested in trying Indian for the first time. The staff is very helpful in answering your questions! I loved every single thing I ordered! I highly recommend the chicken tiki masala and us samosas. I could eat a dozen samosas! Everything here is wonderfully made and seasoned. Hit this place with the family while in town for an overnight. Place got great reviews so we had to try. Staff was very friendly and were aware and receptive to us using the 10% off Yelp check-in discount. We started with veggie mo-mo and bullet naan. The mo-mo was awesome with a very unique sauce that paired perfectly. The waiter said they take about 15 minutes to prepare but we took that as a good sign and were not disappointed. Unfortunately, the naan was a disappointment. No flake or any of the good tandori char that gives naan that unique taste. For mains, we ordered the salmon masala, aalu tarkari and Nepalese veg Thali. Salmon was above average. Tarkari was well seasoned and had a great depth of flavor. The Thali was a new dish for us. Some rice surrounded by small bowls of lentils, mustard greens, potato/bamboo dish and some other veggie dish. Very unique and just wonderful. Excellent meal and with the discount and no alcohol, we got out of there for $42 before tip. Would recommend. read more

My husband once worked with a man from India who turned him onto Indian food. For a few years, he always wanted to go eat Indian food, and I really didn't get what all the fuss was about. We weren't hitting the right places. The spice was always there (poor Kyle got the brunt of that at a UYE), but the flavors just didn't keep me coming back. After the first time we tried Yak, I completely understood the cravings. The food here is SOOO good! Particularly, the curry chicken and the tikka masala are addictive. I could go and eat just those two things, but of course, I have to grab a little naan, dipping sauce, veggies, rice and noodles. The buffet is perfect for someone who likes a variety, or someone who's trying Indian food for the first time. The pans are small, so they're always bringing out fresh dishes. If you know exactly what you want, no worries, they also have a menu you can order from. For $10 per person, this place is a real bargain. I increased the rating to 4 stars from 3. Note that I originally wanted to put just 2 stars because of how disappointing I found the place, but my wife got me to post 3. When we talked to my wife's many relatives and friends in Mobile, they couldn't stop raving about the place, so I've increased the rating to 4. That's not my opinion, which remains unedited below, but I find it difficult to dispute their opinion of a place in a city I don't live. Lunch buffet, like many such, is okay at best. My wife begs we mention we came at 1:45 and they end the buffet at 3. But she's able to post her own countervailing review. The chicken tandoori is dry, though that is often true and it could be unfair to say as there were only three pieces left in the tray and it was never filled while we were there (photo). The spicy veggies surrounding the chicken tandoori were good and there were plenty of those in the tray. They let the naan run out and never refilled it (photo). The "Chicken Chilly" was spicy if misspelled. The saag paneer was okay, as was the chicken tikka masala and chicken curry. I'm visiting relatives in Mobile. So even if my initial perception is arbitrary, I'm unlikely to do the buffet here again. I will note the fellow at the next table, seemingly a regular, loved it. read more

Flavor was good but could be a little (or a lot) heavier on the spices. The meat was cooked properly. So...'ok' is about all I would put it at. Yuck. Don't do it. I'm so grossed out right now. We tried the lunch buffet and it was not good. The okra was overgrown and like chewing on sticks. I can't remember the last time I actually had to spit out food. The flavour of the potatoes was okay, but some of the potatoes were undercooked. I've eaten food in Nepal and never had anything like the food here. Decent Nepalese/Indian food. It's really more Nepalese than Indian, but not bad for the Mobile area. They catered to my vegan needs (I ordered a veg thali that they were able to make vegan). For appetizer, I ordered the mulligatawny soup. It was too salty and was likely bludgeoned to death in the microwave because it took nearly 15 minutes to cool down. Before then, it was entirely too scalding hot to sip. Overall, the food was decent. Nothing special...nothing I'd probably come back for. I don't understand how a thali doesn't come with any bread (no roti, no naan, nothing). I had to order that separately. Almost any thali I've ever eaten anywhere else comes with some sort of bread. Service was slow as others mentioned. If you're in the mood for South Asian cuisine, I guess that this isn't a bad choice considering the limited options down here. read more

If you love those Indian flavors without the spicy heat l then Yak is a must try: the chicken tikka masala is phenomenal; the, curry chicken delish; the tandoori chicken I could eat all day; the sauteed cabbage yummy. I had to go with my second choice of chicken tikka masala. This food was DELICIOUS! It had the perfect creamy spiciness that tikka masala should have. Yea Alabama, way to represent the Nepalese / Tibetan culture with this delicious food! We came in for lunch on a weekday, and the buffet was going on, but we just ordered off the menu so we could get what we wanted. Saag paneer and dal fry, yum to both! We had to send the paneer back to get a few more pieces, but they accommodated us which was super nice. The dal was very milky feeling which was a new but welcomed experience. Garlic naan was great, a little bit thick but still tasty. Prices are good and especially if you're on the road, stop by for some delicious food. Decor is nice with some Tibetan flags decorating the lifted seating areas, it's cute. read more

The food is still excellent, but the service I got yesterday 1 PM-130 PM was almost terrible. The Momo dish was not refilled on the buffet, and, even though there were only 5 patrons on the restaurant for about 20 minutes, none of us received any attention from the attendant/waitress. I had to go to the bar to get my own drink refilled while she looked on. I also think the paper towel dispenser in the men's restroom needs to be replaced, as it must be termed with the fingers to get paper towels, leading to hand contamination. However, food-wise, only Aroy comes close to this place. It's just too tasty. read more

I applaud local business and local business owners. I also love Indian food. However, this is not the way to run a business. I walked in and was not greeted, and one of the two employees present was on his phone. They did not have a host or hostess instead, I was required to make my order at a computer. I fumbled my way through the instructions (once I found them--they are hanging to the left-hand side of the computer) only to discover there was no beverage section. It was clear that I was struggling with the computer, yet no one in the restaurant, acknowledge my existence. Why would I spend my money at a local business for a restaurant that does not even acknowledge that I am there? I understand times are tight and a lot of people are not working, but in order to survive this restaurant needs to ditch the computer and get its employees actively involved in customer service. read more

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE ... SERVED **CHICKEN** AS VEGETARIAN DISH!!!! I'm a pure vegetarian by religion and by choice. I went to their lunch buffet on 11/12/17 along with my wife. This was our first visit ever since we were driving over from New Orleans to Atlanta and thought to have some good Indian food. On their buffet table, they had put "aloo chilly" to a dish tag so both of us put some on our plate. But as we started eating, something didn't feel well and as we took stuff out from our mouth, we were shocked to see that what we were eating was CHICKEN!! When we went upto the counter to complaint, the server very casually said "OH, I FORGOT TO CHANGE". After we pressed her hard that it's a horrible mistake, only after that she apologized but was still defensive. When we asked for the manager Salaam Singh, she disappeared into the kitchen and didn't come out until after 5 mins after she saw a new customer walking in. They didn't quite understand how they hurt my religious sentiments!! Of course, this was just any other pit stop for us and won't be coming here again, but this experience has left a big scar and taught us a big lesson of being careful in future. WOW. This was amazing. I don't even to where to start. First of all, I wasn't sure what do order. I am somewhat familiar with Indian food. However, Nepalese food is new to me. I ordered the veggie thali because it seem like there was a lot of options in that order. My husband ordered the chicken chow mein and we also ordered naan bread stuffed with potatoes. I ate everything! It was so good and so flavorful. Extremely easy for a vegetarian eat there. I can't even tell you what exactly I ate in the veggie thali, just that IT WAS SO GOOD. I went for the first time for their lunch buffet and I was blown away. There we're about 12 dishes - all hot and fresh. I tried a little bit of everything & there wasn't one I didn't enjoy. The dumplings were delicious, and the tiki masala was some of the best I have had in Mobile. I now understand why it has won so many Nappie awards!! They have kiosks now to place your order and if you're not familiar with the system and the different types of dishes, it can be rather daunting. But the food is delicious and once you get past the ordering process things go a lot smoother. Went to Kathmandu for the first time for the lunch buffet. The food is great for the pricing- lunch buffet was $8.95. It provided a great variety of dishes, my personal favorite being the chicken tikka masala. Servers were also pretty quick with replacing food items when they ran out. The environment is very casual and there is plenty of seating. There are three larger tables available, perfect for larger groups (8-10 people). Overall, it was a good experience. It's definitely one of those (literal) hole in the wall places that you might look over, but don't miss out on this little place! The Samosas were perfectly fried and crispy. My boyfriend had the honey chicken while I had the curry chicken. Both were beautifully seasoned and spiced just right so as to not over power the curry. Craving Indian food and discovered this place. Ordered take out and I t was ready, fast . Balanced flavors, perfectly cooked rice, not greasy, lamb was cooked to perfection, chicken was juicy even in the stews. Ordered the medium spicy option and it was hotter than I was expecting but I like heat so it was perfect for me. The hot would likely be too hot me.
