This is one of the best Indian/Nepali/Pakistani restaurants in Mobile. I love how they have serve different central Asian cuisines. When me and my husband went we tried the lamb biriani which was delicious and the chicken vindaloo which was spicy and really good (only recommend this for the spicy lovers). We also tried their samosas which were also really delicious. Yak is my favorite for Indian food in the Mobile area! Chicken Tikka Masala with naan is always what I order and never disappoints. They have the perfect spice level for every palette. I eat a lot of Indian Food throughout the US & also in the home of Indian Cooking - England ! The food is wonderfully cooked, authentically spiced & I haven't had one poor dish here. In addition they put a Nepalese twist on the Indian cuisine that I can honestly say improves it. The family staff are an absolute delight, very friendly & always serve with a smile and love to chat with us. Prices & portion size are very reasonable. This is absolutely one of our favorite places in Mobile. First of all, it's a cultural gem with authentic Indian and Nepalese food. Other than that, what you get for the price is really hard to beat. Whether you go for for their lunch buffet or for dinner, you won't be disappointed. Everything we've ever had is delicious, the servers are always nice and please, and we leave feeling satiated. The food scene for vegetarians in Mobile is spotty at best. Downtown hosts a not so great Thai place, a middle eastern joint which is closed at almost all times and the laughably over-priced spot of tea. The sole reprieve of the downtown Mobilian vegetarian is Serdas; however, the food offering there is mostly light. Yak, located in a run down strip mall a few miles off of the main drag is a true diamond in the rough for the hungry vegetarians of Mobile. The lunch buffet is killer. It features a great salad and several vegetarian entrees as well as a few additional options for the carnivorous diner. These cats served up some of the best saag paneer I've ever tasted. The gulab jamuns are of the hook. Yak is definatively the best place I've eaten in Mobile. read more

I got cold triangles filled with mashed potatoes and feild peas (i assume they were meant to be at Least warm) and the lamb curry was visually indistinguishable from a plate of Gravy Train. When it comes to Indian food, this is about as good as it gets! We are fans of the majority of Yak's menu (tiki masala and vindaloo, in particular), as well as the different kinds of naan they make (regular, cheese, garlic and then the spicy "bullet"). The service here is always top-notch and very friendly; they make it feel as if they are blessed that you have come to their restaurant and they definitely take care of you if you're dining in. There are a few other places for Indian in Mobile that are closer to me, but I will drive the extra ten minutes (happily) to pick up more from Yak. read more

This place is amazing! We have eaten here on so many different occasions. The chicken tikka masala is the thing that keeps us going back time and time again. It is so delicious. It is creamy and savory. I have tried it mild, medium, and hot, and medium is definitely the way to go! We always order an extra container of rice when we get this for takeout because there is not quite enough rice without that. The samosas are also delicious. We have also eaten the lunch buffet several times and think that it is fantastic! Try this place, you won't be disappointed. read more

This evening we had a group go to this restaurant for dinner. The time was 7:00 PM. we were essentially the only party in the restaurant. The owner was not there and it appears neither were enough cooks, staff etc. We sat for far too long and then only received parts of our orders. A few couples never received any food at all. The entire available staff appeared to be 2 people who obviously were inexperienced and totally overwhelmed. AS i HAVE ALREADY STATED AND THIS NEEDS TO BE EMPHASIZED AGAIN.....we were the only people in the restaurant. It was not late and in truth they should have closed their doors rather than subject us to this type of treatment. So to the consumer I can only say. STAY AWAY..... this place should not be serving the public when the owner is not there. The food in the past has been good but now we must scratch this restaurant off the list of places to frequent. read more

I absolutely love this place. I normally come here once every other week for the lunch buffet and everything is amazing. My typical plate will include Naan, Tandoori Chicken , Masala chicken and the Kathmandu sautéed cabbage. I also like to get the curry goat when it's on the buffet. read more

The naan was great! The sag paneer was pretty good. I went at lunchtime, and the food on the buffet didn't seem fresh--the white meat was dry, and the potatoes were gummy. Very fun dining experience because you get to try all sorts of different things for a great price! We had plenty of leftover too so totally worth it to try different things. Yak the Kathmandu Kitchen came highly recommended by my doctor who grew up in India. It is in the Food Champs shopping strip by McConnell Auto and behind Checkers. They serve a buffet at lunch or you can order off the menu. Friendly staff and we are usually seated pretty quickly. That day they served palek paneer (paneer cheese cubes in creamed spinach), aaloo mattar, dal (lentils), vegetable korma, naan, cabbage stir fry, chicken curry (on another visit, they had goat curry), crispy vegetable pakoras, chicken tandoori, chicken tikka masala, steamed rice & vegetable biryani. I started with cucumber slices and mixed the mint & tamarind sauces for dipping. Then a plate of everything I wanted and watermelon for dessert. Gulab Jamun is a traditional Indian dessert - spongy milky balls soaked in rose scented syrup (not my favorite). Since then, I've introduced 4 people from my downtown office to the Yak and they loved it. So now we go to the Yak once or twice a month; more frequent if they were closer to our office. I feel like I could eat here everyday. They have great chicken tikki masala. Their saag is also great. The bullet naan is made with hot peppers and will clear your sinuses! This place is great if you need a vegetarian option. They have plenty of items on the menu that are vegetarian. The lunch buffet is also great. You can get a flavor for a bunch of different Indian/Nepali dishes. FYI they are closed on Mondays. read more

Wonderful food! I loved talking with the owner, who is from Nepal. She told me about how she brought most of the decor back from Nepal and how she misses her country very much. She was so sweet. The food is incredible. Nepali food is wonderful because it is a fusion of Indian and Chinese food. This may not sound good to you but I promise you it is! We got these delicious plates that came with a little bit of everything. I had the chicken tikka masala, cauliflower masala, palak paneer (aka saag paneer), lentils and naan plate. It even came with dessert. All for $13! The decor is very peaceful and the food is incredibly authentic. Don't be afraid to ask for medium. However, ask for spicy at your own risk. I love spicy food and the spicy cauliflower masala definitely got to me. Their chai is wonderful and really helps round out the meal. This is a great place to take your family. Great lunch buffet and a nice variety of meat/sauce dishes that go well with rice. Not very elaborate but quite tasty and a nice change from other cuisines. The dinner isn't not as good as lunch, more expensive and not as tasty in my opinion. The lunch buffet is $10 + tax per person, which is not expensive, imo, but not the cheapest lunch you could get. Updated March 2016. Yet another visit to my sister this spring break but this time I got the Lamb Masala. Complete redemption just for the Lamb Masala. I will get this every damn time it was so incredibly delicious. I did get a chance to try their deep fried vegetables and they were pretty solid although fried food is not my favorite in the least. Updated March 2015 (3 stars). My sister took us here again and we opted to try the Nepali food which was so delicious. I would give it a 3 just for the Nepali food. 2013 (two stars) I was taken here by my sister while on vacation visiting the area. She has raved about this place since she moved to the area and the restaraunt opened so naturally I was excited. She is the one who got me into Indian food. Unfortunately I was horribly disappointed. The decorum was average, nothing special. We ordered the appetizer with the crushed samosas topped with mint and tamarind chutney with a dash of yogurt. It was very good. My favorite is Korma so I got that with chicken. My husband got Tikka Masala. My Korma was super super thick, more like paste than a sauce. Mine was made with chicken thighs while my husbands was made with tiny cut up pieces of chicken which was weird. His Tikka was way better than my Korma which was flavorless and dark looking. Suffice it to say that he liked his better than I liked mine but we both agree our place back home is better by far. We also ordered the cheese naan which my husband loved but I did not. Service was atrocious. As others have reviewed and I agree, Indian food is meant to be made to order and it does take time to prepare. What I do not agree with is having one waitress on a busy night doing everything. We waited a long time for less than mediocre food. It was cheaper than most places but still not worth it for 10 bucks a dish. I will never come here again. read more

Decent buffet to go and try different offerings for this style of food. If you are not used to Indian fare a buffet is your best choice so you don't get scared off because it's new and unknown. The spice level is about medium so you will not be punished to badly if you choose wrong. The dining room is large and not cramped, and the buffet itself was clean and well maintained throughout the time period we were there. This place is a good stop if you are ready to try something new and different. read more

YUM!! My husband and I had about zero experience with Indian/Nepali food going in. We felt like moving out of our comfort zone so we tried Yak. The woman who waited on us was so incredibly friendly. She helped us decide on things based on our tastes and what we were willing to try. OMG I now know I LOVE chicken tikka masala. No liquor license yet, but they are next door to a liquor store.
