Went yesterday to this little bakery/sandwich shop. Went once in 1999 under the former owner and hoped my visit would be just as good. It was wonderful! I was happy that there was outside seating. Unfortunately missed the live music that ended right as we got there. The last song sounded good. Hubby had bratwurst with potato salad and I had Chicken salad on some of the best multigrain I've ever eaten. Then on to the bakery. Oh, my!!! Great location - almost feels like California vineyard on a Sunday with music playing outside. One of the buildings says pizza is coming soon which will be great for those of us who don't eat meat. If you eat meat, the deli will be fine for you. It continues to amaze me places in America still don't cater to vegetarians. It's so odd. I see a case full of disgusting flesh but not even a salad option. Over in the bakery side, you've got plenty of sugar based items from which to choose. Some even gluten free. But honestly, in this land of 75% body fat and I suppose why one would care about health insurance, you absolutely lose your appetite to indulge in sweets. And I'm a total sweet lover. Go walk over to the bourbon house instead. It's honesty a lovely property and the music playing delightful. It looks like at one time it may have been a happening place. The line is confusing, the workers not helpful or friendly. When we first walked in the cases looked good, as we were looking closer the baked goods looked old. We ordered a ham and cheese croissant and it was good. The coffees we ordered were horrible. Please improve your coffee. We also ordered a guava turnover, good but overpriced. We bought day old pretzel rolls , they were good. Please improve this place, it could be great with some effort. If you are watching your weight, or trying to cut back on carbs, Yalaha Bakery is not the best place to come. I remember visiting this German bakery as a kid, and have forever since craved it's decadent and fresh creations. I happened to be in Leesburg for work, and was incredibly pleased to find the bakery from my youth along the road to Orlando. Just as I had remembered, it beckoned with a jovial air of children laughing, as music wafted from the courtyard. Inside, the best kind of tough decision awaited, as I tried to narrow down my choices among the ample options. Huge, crusty loaves of bread line the shelves, while rows of jewel-colored pastries tantalize from the display case. Rhubarb tart? Lemon rosemary cookies? Coconut almond macaroon? Homemade Banana bread? Cheese-covered pretzels? With so many delicious items, they don't make it easy on you. The bee sting has been etched in my memory for years, and I was enthused to learn they were still selling it years later, with an ethereal layer of cream atop a thin cake, topped off with caramelized almonds, it is unique and completely unforgettable. I studied abroad in Munich a couple of years ago, and I must say they pay homage to the delicacies of Bavaria quite well. The service is fantastic, and they lovingly box each item quickly and with great care. I also appreciated that they offered to slice the loaf of Sourdough bread for me, since my own attempts to do so would have ended with clumsy and jagged cuts. This is a unique spot the whole family would enjoy. Definitely worth a detour when you're nearby. The only tiny niggle in an otherwise flawless bakery is the coffee, which really left a bit to be desired. Otherwise though, it is absolute perfection, and the baked goods are sure to hook you. WOW! So gorgeous, inside and out. So much outdoor seating to enjoy the gorgeous weather. They are also known for live music out outdoor events but unfortunately I went late in the day right before closing, but I feasted on some amazing cookies and mini pies. The Raspberry filled, WOW! Now the only thing I was not happy with was the small coconut pie, very dry and I was just expecting something else. This was one of the midpoint stops for the first ride of the Mount Dora Bike festival. A good sign that this place is so awesome was the fact that it was packed full not only by the riders that were participating in the ride but also by people who obviously drove out here from other places. It must be noted that this place is simply in the middle of nowhere, however, everyone agrees that the drive is well worth it. They were well prepared for the influx of pilgrims and there was no shortage of great bakery goods. We opted to refuel with some delicious apple turnovers, and croissants, and it was too bad that we were on our bicycles, otherwise we would have brought back a lot more goodies to be consumed at a later time. Beautiful place, lots of lovely offerings but BUYER BEWARE!! The counter server was a pleasant young lady, but the cashier (an older lady) seriously acted like she wished we hadn't stopped there. It was only when we got home about 20 minutes drive from bakery that we realized that someone added another item into the box with the two we ordered - something lemon flavored that neither of us even looked at - and overcharged us for the two desserts we purchased (over $22). The server asked us twice before pulling the two items we wanted, and there was no one else there when we were ordering. We would have definitely seen her pulling the other item during our order, but regardless of what happened, it's sad. We actually talked about bringing house guests we're having over this summer to Yalaha, but we'll find something else to treat them to. read more

Bread is good but the pastries were a big disappointment. Forget the tiramisu. They made it with very dry white cake in place of espresso soaked lady fingers. In fact there was not even a hint of coffee. While generous size single serving costs $4.50 - $5.00 each, which I would gladly pay for good quality. I believe that the deliciousness in which I partook was not enhanced by the fact that I rode my bike almost 30 miles to get there and still had to ride back. When your body needs fuel things just might seem better then they really are. This isn't the case. It really is delish!! This is a very well known German bakery that is a must go for anyone who is in the Mount Dora area. I had a delicious pastry with cherries, and it was just out of the oven and quite good. They were also grilling some Bratwurst that smelled like heaven. Unfortunately for me at that moment Brats would have been just a bit too much. I had to ride some incredibly WICKED hills back. In 97 degree weather. Viva Florida in October! If you have a car and wish to sight see definitely try it out. read more

Stopped in for lunch and pastries. Place was clean and staff was friendly. Overall food was hit or miss. Schnitzel was greasy and underwhelming with no seasoning. Also got bratwurst which were really good. The pretzel that came with the brat was definitely not fresh unless real German pretzels are supposed to be dry and crumbly. The house made sauerkraut was good as was the house made potato salad. I have to say I thought it was slightly over priced. Next up was the bakery. We got an eclair, croissant, and bear claw. The eclair was good but at $5 each I'll pass on them next time. The bear claw had the same issues as my pretzel. There's no way it was made fresh that day or even the day before. It was very dry and crumbly like old stale bread. Overall I have to say we probably won't go back even if this was just an off day it's quite expensive for what you get. I'd say that if you happen to be in the area, stop in and maybe you'll catch them on a good day but I'd never recommend anyone for out of their way for this place. Wish I had read reviews first. They have some of the best bread and desserts in the area. They have a variety of cookies, cakes, and pies which are all made in their kitchen. One of my favorites are the Lavender cookies! I usually buy a loaf of their multi grain bread, too. Very fresh and affordable. And luckily, they have a smaller shop right off of Orange Avenue in the Ivanhoe district. Located along the rollin hills just off of Route 48 a few miles outside of Howey in the Hills situated right at the southern bank of Lake Harris, it's possible you might forget you're in Florida once you grab a sit at one of the wooden tables. Since moving to Central Florida, I've heard people rave about Yahala Bakery 50 minutes away from the tourist packed corridors of Orlando. On Memorial Day we decided to drive the one-tank trip to the antique shops of Micanopy, stopping for breakfast at Yahala along the way. The Yahala Bakery serves traditional German pastries, breads and cookies in an atmosphere that, except for the suffocating humidity, is undoubtedly Bavarian. Waiting in line on Sunday morning is like working the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. The uninitiated are packed together with the usuals in the tiny bakery lobby as their numbers are called. Families shuffle around each other to get a view of the goodies behind glass in preparation to order. We learned to show up early next time. In the 30 minutes we stood gripping our paper number in anticipation, they ran out of the Ham and Cheese Croissant and Fruit and Cheese Pillow that everyone in our party had hearts set on. We ended up with the Cinnamon Stix, Apple Streusel, Almond Croissant and Apple Strudel, all of them to die for. If you're a coffee snob, my advice is to bring your own. Yalaha's coffee is just plain old drip brew that slowly burns in a glass carafe. We were there on a Sunday. Hymns and folk music were performed by Pastor Tom Barnhill, though this is not advertised like the music on Saturday. Nearby is a fresh produce stand. This is still one of my favorite spots in Lake County! My go-to sandwich at the deli is the chicken salad with cranberries on rye - my favorite chicken salad ever! Something new I tried today was their bread soup, which was phenomenal - cozy, warm, creamy with hints of leek and chunks of pretzel bread. It might be my new favorite soup and is perfect when the weather is cool. Highly recommend! read more

I purchased a Black Forest cake from Yalaha on 3/8. When we went to go serve it that evening, it was completely frozen. I called the bakery on Monday and only received a call back today, 3/13 to "apologize" for the mistake. The woman I spoke with informed me that the baker left the cake in the freezer for too long. I asked about a refund, as the cake was $60 ($55 for the cake and $5 to write on the cake) and was told they only could apologize. The woman I spoke with asked me to return the cake to which I informed her that it was thrown away as it was not something that could've been eaten and that we traveled 1.5 hrs to get this cake. The woman proceeded to yell at me and tell me I was "threatening her" and hung up the phone. When I called back and asked the name of this person, she reported "that is none of your business". I asked to speak with the owner and what their name was and was also told again "none of my business". I am writing this review to caution people to not order cakes from here for any any special occasion in fear that your cake will be frozen and that you will be told "sorry" and spoken to in such a rude manner. I have never been spoken to this way in my life. I'm still in complete shock about the whole conversation. Pretty sad when this was a yearly tradition for a birthday cake. read more

We got the lavender shortbread cookie , chocolate bombe , chocolate chip cookie , French onion bread , and a baguette hard to say what my favorite was but if I had to choose I'd say the French onion bread .. The young lady that greeted us was wonderful. She said she had been there about a week but you couldn't tell she was very knowledgeable and so sweet. She sold me in more than I needed!
