Ok...so I cannot count the number of times I visited Hollarbach's. On most every occasion, the experience of schnitzel and beer left me with a full belly, and a happy smile, as I, again, enjoyed the wonderful fare of the food I came to love while living in Germany. As far as authentic German preperation goes, this place has it down. Yet, today's experience left me a bit...wanting. I wanted the dish I ordered to be served, but instead of Schnitzel Champignon, I was presented with Jagerschnitzel. While I enjoy the Jager finish, it wasn't the creamier, sour cream based with mushroom treatment my mouth was set for. As it took much longer to receive our food order than in past visits, (it was a busy afternoon at the Cafe), so a tad longer wait was to be expected. And, as I did not wish to wait another 20 min. for a refired order, I settled for the dish that was presented. We had driven 40+ mins. from Port Orange to celebrate my daughter's b-day, per her request, and were happy to do so. Still, some nagging details...incorrect order, smaller portions of Schnitz and spatzele (except for the red cabbage), and higher prices left the experience to be less than desired. Decided to try lunch specials and got the lunch portion Pork Schnitzel with Potato Pancakes and Gurkensalat (fresh cucumber salad with yogurt/sour cream dressing) My companion ordered the Buffalo Sandwich but opted for pork rather than chicken. The schnitzel was perfectly fried and tender. The potato pancakes crisp and delicious with applesauce and sour cream toppings! Gurkensalat, fresh slightly crunchy cucumbers in a light creamy dressing. Perfect summer salad! The Buffalo sandwich with pork instead of chicken was amazing! Cooked to tender perfection with just the right amount of buffalo sauce and heat. The grilled pretzel bun with cheese, lettuce and tomato was excellent. The fries were a great companion to the Buffalo sandwich. Red cabbage rounded out the meal adding both color and texture to the lunch. It pains me to write this review because we usually have a great time but this situation was so bad. My mom made a reservation for my Dads 90th birthday party on a Saturday at 6 pm. We should up ( 10 people) half over the age of 80. Christy ( the manager) asked us to wait outside in the heat , which we didn't do. She did not offer a chair inside to any of the older people. There were 3 empty table she told us were for other people and there was a line outside. It was a mess. She then told me it was because the World Cup was on. Authentic German Lunch with Great Service Yesterday we met our friends for our monthly lunch outing, and this time we chose Hollerbach's German Restaurant in Sanford. It turned out to be a great pick. They seated us in a big, open room -- no sound‑absorbing décor, but surprisingly, it never felt loud or echoey. We could talk comfortably the whole time. There's also a charming little German market next door where you can pick up groceries and specialty items. Our server, Rebecca, made the experience even better. She was upbeat, knowledgeable, and handled our group like a pro. When we told her each couple needed separate checks, she gave a playful wink and said, "I gotcha." She also made sure to check that I was okay with their unsweetened iced tea having a peach flavor before bringing it out. Small details like that go a long way. I ordered the Jäger Schnitzel, and the flavor was fantastic -- rich, savory, and comforting. The only downside was that it wasn't hot, more on the warm side, as if it had been waiting a bit. Still delicious. My spouse ordered the Sauerbraten, which looked great, though I thought the meat was a little dry even with the gravy. My goulash soup starter, however, was excellent. The place was busy, and I saw people waiting outside, so reservations are definitely a good idea. We all enjoyed our meals and the chance to catch up. Wow! Wow! What an amazing place. We found it driving back from eating the other night. Super friendly hostess and an awesome server. The menus like a newspaper with history and great descriptions. We were on the way to Disney when we were feeling hungry. Husband was craving German restaurant so luckily we found one! We found parking easily and were greeted immediately inside the restaurant. The restaurant was busy, lively, and felt cozy. There was happy hour specials($5 appetizers and beer) going on when we arrived so we decided to order off that menu. To do so, you do have to order at the bar so keep that in mind. We were led to the bar room and it was spacious and alot more quiet than the main dining area. Our server was attentive and made sure we were taken care of. We had the following: Pretzel with mustard and cheese: 7.5/10 - it was a bit salty but combined with the sweet mustard was delicious! Since it was the smaller version of their giant pretzel, it was only $5 and worth every penny! It was a pretty good size and enough to share between the both of us. I liked the cheese spread too but it was bit rich for me. The mustard was definitely our favorite dip! Potato pancakes with applesauce and sour cream: 9/10 - this was by far my favorite appetizer. The potato pancakes were fried perfectly and the crispy edges were delightful! I didn't think I would enjoy apple sauce and sour cream together but it worked so well with the fried pancake. It cuts through the grease and adds a little sweetness. The portion size was hefty too for $5! Bratwurst with hot mustard: 8/10 - There were a variety of flavors we could choose from and I chose cajun since I love spicy flavors. The bratwurst was cooked perfectly and it was also cut into pieces for easy eating. For $5 you get a big bratwurst and some mustard. I wish it was a little spicier but nonetheless, it was juicy, flavorful, and had that signature snap of a great bratwurst. Jaeger schnitzel: 9/10 - my husband chose the veal and he said it's one of the best schnitzels he's ever eaten. I could see the joy in his face in each and every single bite. It came with warm, pickled cabbage and spaetzle. The schnitzel and spaetzle were covered in this absolutely delightful gravy. I had a bite of everything and it was divine! My husband has lived in Germany and he said it was very reminiscence of his time there. It was a pretty hefty portion too and I knew he loved it when he cleaned his plate completely haha Apple streusel: 9/10 - The apples combined with the flakiness of the pastry and hints of cinnamon was like a warm, cozy hug on a winter day. I cannot explain to you how yummy this was. The pastry itself was light, airy, and each bite made us smile. Definitely try this dessert out! I've been more than once but this most recent time was the first time I was here when the musicians were singing and playing. This is a vibe. Take your friends, get a boot, enjoy the beer and the exciting times. We had a while before a show around the corner so we took our time and even played some cards in between an app and our meal. We weren't rushed out and we felt glad for that. I didn't love our latkes. They were cold when they got to us. Our server seemed confused that they had not made it to our table so my guess is that they had been sitting in the window a while forgotten. I almost sent them back, but I hate that. Our server was nice enough to tell us one of the beers we considered ordering wasn't even German so it wasn't the best choice ;). Thankful for that. I would say the sausages are the best here. A spot I've been wanting to try for years, and I was so happy to find that it was worth the wait! The day I went, there was a line outside that looked like it would take forever, but for a party of 2 it probably only took around 20 minutes to get a table. For larger parties, they will take your phone number and notify you when your table is ready so that your group can wander the shops nearby or grab a drink at The Lodge bar (part of Hollerbach's). There is a ton of seating both inside and outside, and at certain times there is live German music inside which is broadcasted outside on TV and speakers! One thing I was really impressed by was their ability to substitute sides. I substituted both of my sides for no extra charge. I highly recommend the German potato salad (warm kartoffelsalat) instead of French fries for a way more traditional schnitzel experience. The cucumber salad (gurkensalat), egg noodles with gravy (spätzle mit soße), and sauerkraut (sauerkraut) were all delightful as well! We stopped by Hollerbach's for our 2nd visit to watch a friendly soccer match and had a great time. We enjoyed the polka "half time show" in the German themed space. The musicians were talented and entertaining. The Hugo was a refreshing sparkling wine cocktail with mint and elderberry. My husband enjoyed the Oktoberfest beer. I'm not a huge fan of German cuisine, but even I could appreciate just how good and authentic this place is. Oh, and they have root beer on tap and it is the BEST root beer I have ever had, maybe will ever have except actually in Germany. Their desserts were also fabulous, so I'd come back again literally just for root beer and dessert. The cake? Moist but not overly sweet, so delicate and delicious. We arrived on a Friday night around 6pm and were told it would be a 40 minute wait. Only 15 minutes later I received a text that our table was ready! They were extremely fast in being able to accommodate us. The restaurant is very open and noisy, but that's all part of the appeal. It's just fun! Next door this the store had coffee and I got a Dubai chocolate and have to say it was the best coffee I've ever had in my life! I got a muffin to go with it and I enjoyed it very much. Totally forgot to get a picture, but I definitely recommend starting with the Riesenbreze. It is a fluffy pretzel served with two delicious dips: a sweet mustard and Obazda. It's not a trip to Hollerbach's without one of the pretzels! Their menu has lots of German specialities and a wide variety of options. They have delicious wurst options, and I also really enjoy the Kase Spatzle. Honestly, everything we have tried on their menu has been delicious. Some options are fairly pricy, but they are good portions. Of course, there are plenty of beer options and you can even do the Das Boot. The atmosphere inside Hollerbach's is super special. It is loud and a bit chaotic, but also lots of fun. This won't be a good spot if you are looking for an intimate setting, but between people doing Das Boot, live entertainment, and the communal tables, there is a lot going on. If you are heading here on the weekend, be prepared for a bit of a wait to be sat and likely a bit of a wait once you have been seated. We were here on a Saturday night and waited about 35 minutes for a table and it took over 30 minutes to get our food once we ordered. We've been coming to Hollerbach's for over 25 years, and tonight was the worst dinner the four of us have had, here. While the recipes are the same, the quality sucked. The chicken snitzel was dry, chewy and flavorless - the same with the spatzel and gravy. The red cabbage was too vinegary, as well as the sourkrout. The first server left for an emergency, with a manager stepping in to help (sincerely apologizing), until another server (also very nice) took over - but clearly overextended. We sat inside, which meant the band was playing, which most customers enjoyed. I looked online to see where Hollerbach's WillowTree Cafe ranks in the German-American restaurant assaociation. At one time it was #1 and #2. Today, it's not even ranked - which I can see why. Since the family ownership changed hands, the food quality has significantly gone down hill, which makes me sad. They're almost always packed, with a line out the door, so I recommend making a reservation ahead of time if you can, especially if you have a big group. If you're seated in the Lodge, the atmosphere is super cool and rustic! It honestly felt like we were in a Bavarian tavern. If you get a table in the main room, it's kinda bare and basic looking, but you have a better view of the live music. No matter where you sit though, the service is cheery and you're gonna have a good time. The food here is hearty and delicious. Don't come here if you're on a diet -- everything is pretty much meat, potatoes, or carbs (there are a select few veggie side dishes though). They also have some pretty good vegetarian dishes too. We enjoyed everything we ordered. The Hungarian Goulash was flavorful and hearty, my Rubenstein was amazing (I loved the corned beef), and the Black Forest Cake was one of the best I've had (it was rich and fluffy). I should know by now... dont order takeout!!! How is it that in person everything is always great, but multiple times getting takeout the opposite? I always order the honey mustard pecan chicken salad. It has romaine, cherry tomatoes, cukes, bowtie pasta, chicken and a nice dressing....with a warm fresh baked roll on the side. This restaurant in historic Sanford was a very entertaining German dining experience. The waitress that seated us was visibly annoyed when we asked to sit near the back instead of the front, but the visit got better from there. They had many varieties of pilsners and German wheat beers to choose from- the Erdinger Hefe was smooth and refreshing. Our food took about 45 minutes to come out, which was annoying since the restaurant wasn't close to full. When the food did come out, it was great. the Eisbein- giant pork shank- which was delicious and filled me up (I'm 6'3). Their dishes come with a lot of sauerkraut as well. They had live polka music, which was fun- the performers got the audience involved and let us take a selfie with them. Our delicious pan-seared Eisbein is served with Sauerkraut and Heaven & Earth potatoes. Yes, the meat is really that good. However, I was never a fan of sauerkraut, and the Heaven and Earth potatoes -- yes, I managed to not like those either. Just give me the meat next time! Service was there whenever needed. After almost five years living in Sanford, I finally checked Sanford's staple restaurant. What a great place! Great food, live music and atmosphere. I have not had German food besides the German pavilion at EPCOT, so I was excited to try a local spot. When we got the menu, it was a little confusing. It is in the form of a newspaper. There's lots of information and it could be overwhelming. So if you have questions about the menu don't be afraid to ask. We sat indoors where we could enjoy the music up close. The tables are set up picnic-style (long tables), so you might end up sharing with other parties and it makes it feel like a true German beer hall experience.
