I came here for lunch on my lunch break one day. I didn't even know it was there. I was actually going to another restaurant until I saw this sushi place! I moved to NC from NY 9 months ago and have been looking for a REAL sushi place. No such luck. Until I walked into Yama. I knew right away by he atmosphere that this is MY type of place and assumed the food should be good. Well, it was soooo good! Yes! Finally! I will be returning! Fresh and delicious Chefs choice sushi was a hit! My son loved his soup and everything was on point.

Love the decor in here! Very cool industrial vibe. Good service. A few things to improve on tho. We were a little mixed on the food. We had the kalbi rib app - it had a yummy teriyaki glaze but the meat was super chewy and very hard to bite thru esp without a knife. The popcorn chicken was a decent portion and very crispy. Sauce that came with was a good complement. I wish there were more sushi rolls to choose from on the menu like many other places do - several don't even include raw fish (literally half). We had the niigata, naughty akami, and waverly. All were just fine - didn't knock our socks off. Wish there was more texture - all the same flavor. Also had the sashimi platter- excellent! very fresh and tender fish. Lastly, they have a reso system on their website which is great but they do not take same day reso so I guess you have to plan ahead. We love this place and probably visit at least twice a month. Their sushi is very well done, fresh and interesting. We typically have a couple appetizers; Gyoza, edamame, rolls, etc. and all are well done and tasty. I also really enjoy their curried chicken. The atmosphere is modern and the staff is attentive and fun. Overall, this is a terrific choice for a casual evening out or date night. read more

I was in Charlotte visiting with friends and we went here for dinner. Our server was friendly and prompt, without being overbearing. We had calamari and shrimp shumai for appetizers, and they were both really good. I had a ginger salad and the snow roll. It was a great sushi roll but I wish I had gotten something else as well. I didn't leave hungry by any means, but I should've ordered some veggies or something on the side. A couple people in our party had hibachi shrimp, steak, and chicken. It all looked delicious. I wouldn't mind checking it out again next time I'm in Charlotte. read more

Had the hibachi chicken and the rice on each plate for our party was not really good at all. We will try again as I'm hoping we just got a bad batch. Service was good too. No issues there. This is our favorite go to sushi place since settling in Charlotte compared to NY. Can't believe that I waited this long to write a review. We love the staff and fresh sushi and sake variety here. For those adventurous type, highly recommend sitting by sushi bar and letting the sushi chef Robin and manager Q and the wait staff just give you suggestions to try. You will not be disappointed. From the moment we were seated began the horrible experience. Took 10 minutes and me asking the manager if we even had a server to get our drinks ordered. After that, we ordered an appetizer and our food at the same time. Our food came out and by the time we were finished and ready for the check the appetizer still had not come out. We told them not to even bother with it at this point. $50 meal that was not anywhere near worth that price. The experience was really bad even though the food did taste good. this place is not all that. not sure what the hype is all about. the food was salty for my liking . Ballantyne sushi was ok at best . Korean ribs are awful. there's little no meat in them. it was liking just eating teriyaki sauce with bones. the tuna tataki was not served cold enough. the place was hot the the booth was not comfortable and the table was sticky. if I'm going out for dinner and I'm dressed I except better ambience then what we got. I expected better, especially at this price point. I don't mind paying for good quality sushi but when it comes out and it's not cold I question either the quality or the handling. In this case I think it's the handling as all of the sushi refrigeration doors are left open while preparing. I will say that the service was very good (hence the stars I gave) but when I pointed out to the server regarding the temp, she made the manager aware and he made no attempt to speak with us. He did go over to the sushi bar and to feel the sushi and told the chefs to close the doors. I'll go elsewhere next time. read more

Trying to support local businesses but they need to help themselves too and not price gauge as well as provide a tasty product. Additionally, when offering online ordering and providing an option for comments for the order they need to read that! Major order screw up on the order that cost us $79 for 5 rolls! This is not going to get you a very good rating. We got to Yamas a bit after 8:00 PM on Sunday. Around 8:30 PM. They were ready to go. (The restaurant closes at 9:00 PM on Sundays). They were very un respectful. They open the kitchen doors so a truck could do some type of cleaning to the kitchen WHILE OUTSIDE WAS 20 DEGREES . They didn't care about us. They just wanted to leave and go home earlier. Ordered a couple of sushi rolls over the phone, was told that it would be 25 minutes... walked in 35 minutes later and waited 20 minutes for me food to be ready. Really? For a couple of sushi rolls? I asked for a discount because of the inconvience, they wouldn't give me one. Terrible service. Waitress service was good. Hostess service was terrible. Went there and asked for a different table was not accommodated and the hostess said this table was it. We are so busy on weekends. Btw, there are other tables open. Five minutes later, a different hostess said they have a different table. Everything is about message delivery. You don't say this table was our only option. If you are in the service business you need to be at least make it sound like you are trying to work with you and accommodate. Will not go back. This was our first visit. At eight pm it was still very busy. The front greeters were polite and responsive. The dress is casual and the ambiance was nice. We sat at the sushi bar. Our server was nice but she was marginally attentive (this may be because it was very busy). The menu had a great food selection along with the beer and the sake selection. We chose from the sushi section. The food was excellent. The price is above average bit worth the food served. I would have given it 5 stars but the service lacked. If it wasn't for the Manger "Que" I don't think we would have been served as fast. read more

Ate there twice...first time sushi was very good, seaweed salad portion very very small. Yesterday ate Teriyaki salmon, portion was ridiculously small less than 2 oz of fish including skin for $16. So excited that Yama has a location closer to home! Visited during their soft opening and love the new space! Excellent service, food tastes delicious (just like all of their other locations). We sampled a sweet, bubbly Sake called Mio that was awesome. And I honestly have tried Sake and it was always too strong. This was perfect. All of staff worked together to make us feel welcome and at home. The kids loved the chicken and salmon teriyaki dishes, so it is a great place for families. Beautiful presentation for the dishes. YAMA has become our favorite spot in Charlotte. I have never written a review before, but they are worth it. The wait staff are friendly and service is as good the food. I go fairly often and have had all of their wait staff at one time or another. They almost always come by and greet us whether we are their table or not. The chefs are just as attentive. The sashimi is always fresh and has no fishy smell or taste. They are sure to let you know if they have any specials. Try the fatty tuna. It will melt in your mouth. Be sure to ask for recommendations. They have a large selection of sashimi and quite a few that others may not. Give them a shot and you will not be disappointed. Your service will be spectacular, the food fresh and well prepared. You will want reservations on Friday and Saturday nights. read more

Very very Poor service ! After waiting for more than an hour for food, we were told they ran out of rice. my son just wanted rice & all the server had to say was no rice sorry. My 9yo had to go home hungry, the server said if we ordered anything now it would be another 20.mins. They didn't even care to substitute it with something when they knew they were short of rice.
