It's about the same as all the rest of the hibachi restaurants you'll ever go to. I've yet to find one that really shocks/amazes me with something new and different. However, that still does not beat the quality (and quantity!) of food you'll get and the entertainment of the chefs. It's always great for groups and families and a fun vacation experience. I went outside the traditional chicken/steak/shrimp box and ordered the Mahi Mahi. It was good, but a little bland. My husband ordered the scallops and they were amazing. Always a good choice. The miso soup was good, salad had nice dressing options (go with the spicy soy!) and the dessert was just enough to give you a taste of sweet to top off your palette. The chef is the only reason I'm giving two stars. He was awesome. The downfall started with the soup it was served lukewarm at best. Then it got even worse with the salad. The dressing tasted awful. Don't get me wrong we love Yamato and eat a lot in Columbia SC. So I know for a fact they can do better. Maybe a good time to concentrate more on customer satisfaction and less about volume of people. The other bad part is the chef that thinks he is funny by singing at the table he is lucky somebody hasn't knocked him out for making people listen to that crap. We made a reservation for 6 and a baby and were immediately seated. Only a couple minutes passed before we were served with drinks and the chef came right out. Our chef was great. I wish I knew his name. He kept us laughing the whole time with jokes, picked on us a good bit, and had a great sense of humor when we picked back. The food (especially the filet mignon) is the best hibachi style meal I have ever had. I'm not a huge scallop fan, bit several in our party ordered them, and they were bigger than half dollars and very thick. In general the portions were large, and as the good places do, we received a shrimp appetizer. One of the best things was the sherbet at the end with our bill. Sweet, but very light. First off we went at the height of "in season" . Stopped by at 7:30pm and had an hour wait. Hot as blazes outside and then when we were seated it was hot as blazes in our table area. There were fans going and the hostess apologized for the temperature and said the A/C had been out and they were waiting for it to be repaired. Ok, we decided to stay because we were starving. It was getting hotter by the moment and finally our cook arrived. He was good and the food was good but there was a family there in which the kids were afraid of fire and had seafood allergies, so the cook had to stop and retrieve special utensils for them. Ugg! As we left we mentioned to the hostess/front end people that they should not subject people to sitting in that hot area we were in. Her reply was that there was nothing wrong with the A/C and that if you come to a Japanese steakhouse you should know that it's going to be hot. That send a chill down my spine. My friends and I decided to go to Yamato sushi bar after calling to confirm that they were open, in which we were told the kitchen was open until 9:30 PM. We arrived around 8:30 and ordered a few appetizers and drinks to begin. We feel we made it clear to the server that we had plans to continue ordering- we prefer to order a few rolls at a time rather than a whole bunch at once. Our sushi appetizers were actually very delicious and the only reason we give Yamato the stars. At 9:05 we attempted to order fried rice and hibachi but were told the kitchen was officially closed (at 9PM). We figured the sushi bar was still open and asked to put in a few more rolls, as we had thought we'd have at least until 9:30 to order, or at least a heads up that the kitchen was closing. The waitress didn't let us know the kitchen and sushi bar were closing up. As a server/bartender, I think it's absolutely crucial to let customers know at least 15 minutes before the kitchen closes in case they want to put in one last order. The server didn't offer to go check, as it was literally 5 minutes after "kitchen closed," if they could throw one last order in for us, but the sushi chef did offer to make my friend a hand-roll. The waitress insisted on getting the manager over to us, who simply stated she will educate her servers for next time...... that was not beneficial to us. To top it off, as we were leaving, the server had bumped into me with a fresh plate of what looked like bang bang shrimp, which fell and dropped on my shoes- I couldn't even tell you where she was going with this platter, as we were the only ones in there and they made it crystal clear kitchen was closed and no more food was to come out. read more

I have eaten here on vacation for many years, and have always enjoyed it. The food is excellent. This time, it was delicious (as expected). My boyfriend got the chicken and shrimp and I got filet. We also got edamame as an appetizer. This time, they are losing 2 stars for absolutely horrible service. Me and my wife went here for our anniversary and it was dynamite. It was really busy and our table didn't seem to well with a couple on the end that seemed to hate the world and the guy she was with, Three in the middle just wanting to get drunk and then me and my wife on the other end. The service was fantastic, My wifes tea didn't get to half a glass the whole night and the drinks were pretty good. Our chef was really good and seeing that me and my wife were excited for the show and the food he went the extra step and tried to get everyone into it. There is a few different tricks that I haven't seen at the other Hibachi's that I have been to. We started out with the soup. Then there was the salad (which I got ranch and tasted like it had ginger in it really righteous) and shrimp appitezers. The main course came next and I got the steak and chicken and my wife got the salmon and shimp and both of the meals was cooked great. Then we had a bowl of sherbet. There was no cutting corners and the food was fresh with all the bells and whistles that come with the type of restraunt that it is. After the food I spoke to the manager and we sat down had a drink and chatted for a few minutes before we were got ready to head out and they were close to closing for the night. It was a really good experience and do recommend giveing it a go. Its good for some and not for others but if your looking for an adventure then give it a shot. read more

The server was extremely short and seemed like he didn't care to even work there, he was rude and seemed like he didn't even want us there...it seemed like he was more interested in leaving rather than earning a tip for only keeping my drink full, and clearing my plates...which he fell short on as well. The cook was funny and really good and the rest of the staff was attentive. Which kept my group entertained. The food was great. I got some sushi while my family got the hibachi salmon and chicken. The service was good and we were seated fairly quickly. My biggest issue was with the hibachi chef. He was kind of boring. When I think hibachi I think silly jokes, trying to catch food in your mouth, spraying you with water, etc. The chef we had did none of that as we watched other chefs do that around us. We were walking around the Broadway and came across this restaurant but didn't stop since we weren't hungry. But we decided to try it out the next day. The only thing is, they only open for dinner so we had to eat something light until they opened at 4. Thankfully we were one of the first folks there so we were seated right away. We didn't have to wait for any other patrons to sit at our table unlike most other hibachi restaurants. The waitress we had was very friendly and accommodating - we wanted to switch seats for the view of the water. She even brought a sorbet for the toddler we had with us. The chef was nice and kept us entertained. He talked to our group the whole time versus just cooking and looking at us. The miso soup and salad was good but I think it filled me up a little. I had the hibachi chicken. The veggie was plentiful. The portion is large so I had a lot to take for my lunch the next day. When we got up to leave, the place was packed and more folks were waiting outside for a seat. Definitely recommend going early so you don't have to wait. read more

Had a great and fun family dinner here. Service was great and with a smile and we were seated immediately. We had a reservation. The serving was very large and every course was so tasty. They were very accommodating for those at the table with allergies to seafood. Teddy was our chef and he was so funny and made the experience really great! Yamato's is a must for our fam while in Myrtle Beach. We love the food here! The soy vinaigrette is a must for your salad dressing selection. The food portions are always over the top and I love their scallops. Also, sherbet is included with your meal. I'm old enough to remember when most Japanese restaurants used to offer this. I'm grateful Yamato chooses to carry on this tradition. Service is usually good though sometimes feels rushed. This is a high volume restaurant which makes it understandable, in my opinion. Waited about 20-30 minutes after being told 15, not a big deal though. We were seated and waiter came right out and took drink orders and told his we could order drinks only at that point. He returned with the drinks, told us it was time to order. We ordered an appetizer, and gave him our dinner order. Soup and salad were fine. We had an order of my strip and shrimp, and a chicken and shrimp. The sauce on the chicken was burned. Now let's get back to our appetizer... we never received it. Refills on our drinks... never received any. But we were given a to go box as soon as the cook was done cooking. We felt very rushed at that point.
