Known as Yan Kei (岩記) in Cantonese, it took me a minute to realize it was the same place as Yan Tea Cafe. The lack of an English sign didn't help, as I figured Yan Kei was all about BBQ (#1) and Yan Tea was something like a cafe, when in fact it was the same place the entire time. Still, the rarity that is Cantonese siu mei in Houston, let alone Katy, makes this place still worth a look. It's always great to see the daily selection of meats hanging near the window to entice folks. They have roast duck, soya chicken, BBQ pork, and a very crispy siu yuk pork belly. I think their 3 meat combo over rice (三寶飯) is the way to go. It's the most ideal lunch option and could also make for a fairly hearty early dinner meal. I wouldn't go too late though, since most of their meats are at their optimal freshness during the early morning / afternoon. It's not that spacious, but it's enough for small'ish groups to dine. Takeout is pretty common here, often with some kind of bubble tea. I'm not particularly fond of the latter, but then again I've never seen a specialty Cantonese BBQ place and bubble tea do either particularly well. Another area that they're solid in is the congee selection. The pork and preserved egg are enjoyable despite the pricetag ($9) and the fish slice congee also gets a thumbs up. Prices are adequate for Katy and the service is good overall. This used to be my most favorite place to eat. But lately, things aren't just what they were at all. Today was the last straw - after spending over $50 on 2 noodle dish, a rice dish, and a side of vegetables - to which hardly anything was edible (I legit spat out my food), I just cannot support this place anymore. The "roasted pork" tasted and had the consistency of boiled pork. I even saw blood in certain places (not the "pink" you get from roasting either). The vegetable with oyster sauce was just disgusting. And the noodle soup's broth tasted like they washed the vegetables with it. The crispy noodles were dry and soggy at the same time - I mean, how is that even possible? My kid was so hungry he ate the latter. My baby on the other hand, kept spitting the food out. We thought he was just being picky (since he was the first one to eat). All in all, I don't think I've been this disappointed at any restaurant before. I'm sure the staff knew what was going on as I had to spit out food and put away dish after dish. Is it worth bringing up? We finally got to try Yan Tea and I would definitely recommend it. I seriously LOVE how it is a tea shop but it is also a full kitchen. Their meat plates are absolutely fantastic, huge portions and taste amazing. Only complaint was that the soy sauce chicken was mostly bone. This is my go-to spot for a quick, budget-friendly meal. The place is small but cute, making it a nice spot to hang out. The owner and staff are incredibly friendly, and they bring the food and drinks directly to your table. They serve the best crème brûlée milk tea, complete with an entire crème brûlée as a topping. It's a must-try for any crème brûlée milk tea fan. I usually order their two-meat combo, while my husband orders the three-meat option. The meat choices include duck, BBQ pork, soy sauce chicken, and crispy pork belly. Each combo comes with a side of steamed cabbage and a bed of rice, and the dish is super filling. As part of our Katy Asia Town food crawl, this was our last stop before heading back home. I've walked past this establishment over the years and I finally checked them out this past weekend for my MIL's birthday. The store owner was very gracious and hospitable as we had a large party of 6. This is a smaller store but they have one large table that can fit approx. 8. I had surprised my MIL with a birthday cake and the owner welcomed us to eat the cake there. (Some establishments are funny about this but glad he was very accommodating). We got to try several items on the menu - but beware that rice is not included if you order certain dishes. I believe it was $5 for a large bowl of white rice - which was a little odd to me. We tried their peking duck - highly recommend this! My in-laws really enjoyed it and they even ordered a couple of milk teas to go. We came here on a saturday and ordered 1lb honey bbq pork and spicy popcorn chicken! the popcorn chicken tasted good and was served fresh - if they were trying to imitate taiwanese popcorn chicken, they came close. definitely needs more basil and 5 spice seasoning but it was still pretty good! the honey bbq pork was orders by the pound. All 3 of the meats were good but I was most impressed with the crunchy pork belly. It was actually nicely crunchy without being tough. If we didn't order so much food I would have ordered some more of the pork belly. I had the seafood crispy noodles. They were delicious. I wish it had more seafood on top but the sauce was balanced and the noodles were the perfect texture for us. My friend ordered the pork and tofu and it tasted good. I liked the sauce on the dish and the tofu had a nice texture. Popcorn chicken was also very good. Nice and crisp. We also ordered drinks. Crispy pork belly here is the real deal! Authentic flavor and texture! I only wish they served more pork belly and cabbage as I felt there was too much rice in comparison. I have been here multiple times with both friends and family. The place has a great atmosphere for hanging out and I'd definitely recommend it as a date spot as well. The employees here are all super nice and have no problem helping you order or if you have questions about the menu. Their best milk tea is the Oreo Milk Tea; really good tea flavor and has lots of oreo pieces! I would also recommend any of their fruit teas at 50% sugar, really refreshing but regular sugar can be too sweet. Food - ordered the 3 meats over rice for 14$ which was a decent portion which fed my partner and I. Personally I liked the roast pig the most of the three meats (roast duck, char siu, and roast pig. The milk teas, we ordered Thai tea and the classic milk tea and ehhhh it didn't really give me that wow factor when I usually drink milk teas. Delicious food options, but the bubble tea was just okay. I was walking out of H-Mart when I saw all of their meats outside the window. I could smell the crispy juiciness of the pork and that is exactly what I got, along with some potstickers and a drink. The girl that was taking my order, I think her name was Winnie W., did not want to be there. She seemed tired and didn't have a positive attitude about anything. I was kind of stressed out cause I still hadn't decided on a drink (so many options), so I ended up getting a brown sugar milk tea. They use lactose-free creamer in their "milk" drinks, which was the only positive. The boba wasn't cooked all the way, you could still taste the rawness from the tapioca flour and it had that texture from it as well. The pork belly was SUPER crispy and juicy. It came in a plastic to-go container which I loved because not everyone can finish such a large portion. 10/10 loved the concept. The potstickers were also really good. I also had the shrimp dumplings, which I forgot to take a picture of, but it was steamed fresh to order. Only thing I was surprised from of was the fact that I got a whole shrimp shell while eating. Crunchiness from a steamed dumpling was not expected. I would highly suggest just getting the food here. Finally!! Another Chinese bbq place in Katy! Walking in, the order counter is immediately on the left with 3 huge TV displays as the menu overhead.
