I've been to the other Jang Guem Tofu location in Bellaire and loved the food there so I decided to give the in-house food court at Hmart a try. I came on a standard Sunday evening to order after a careful and deliberate scan of the menu. Mind you this was 6:00 pm, the heart of dinner time. I saw some patrons earlier ordering so I figured I would order. However there was nobody at the counter and the register had a closed sign at the front. Thinking they may have just went to the bathroom, I continued to wait. A guy came out to the front to unload a few to-go boxes and then went back into the kitchen. Nothing was said to me even though we made eye contact. After a few more minutes of waiting I decided to just go to the other booths. I look back 5 minutes later, to see the guy back at the counter taking orders much to my chagrin. I figured this is what happened: They had a lot of orders to where the kitchen staff couldn't handle it so the register guy went back to help, thus putting up a "CLOSED" sign right around when I stepped up. My issue is at least TELL ME when they made eye contact to come back in X minutes. The dude didn't care. NGL this is an OWNERSHIP issue and they need to hire better and more people for the kitchen. Asians be cheap tho. I won't be back. How the heck are you going to close in the middle of a meal time? Think thats good for business? SMH read more

The WORST Korean soup I've ever had. The owner had one poor little Hispanic man working behind counter. We waited 10 minutes to order bc he was hurriedly trying to wash dishes. He was cooking, serving, working counter and washing dishes all by himself, no one else was there to help him. After us there was several other frustrated people in line all waiting to order. The side dishes had no taste, kimchi was sweet and the soup had zero flavor. My beef soup had 3 or 4 pieces of meat. The soft tofu wasn't soft, very firm and in chunks floating around in my soup. The broth wasn't blended, the red spicy sauce was separated from broth. Will not be ordering from inside this Hmart location again. Food took about 15-20min to come out, cashier also messed up my order and I ended up missing an order, however the manager was very nice about it and fixed it for me I got the Korean bbq combo + tofu soup and it tasted really good. More rice would be nice but the meat was flavorful and tender as well as my soup being perfectly seasoned although it looked a little bland. Weren't much beef in there but it's not like I would of finished. $18.99 is a bit steep because that's the price at an AYCE Korean buffet but if you compare it to most places, it's actually a deal because they charge you $18.99 already for the galbi and that's without the soup! I also got the bulgogi combo + curry tofu soup and it also tasted really good! The bulgogi was very flavorful and they gave me a lot of meat and there was even some sauce at the bottom mmMm. I would probably get just the beef next time though because it came with one shrimp (which I didn't eat) and a few clams that didn't taste very fresh so I only had one. I chose the spiciest level and I was pleasantly surprised by how spicy and flavorful the broth was. There was plenty tofu in the soup and the overall dish was better than I expected. This place is located inside the H-mart food court. We ordered the Tofu soup and the pork belly combo. I appreciated that there was no extra charge when you chose what kind of tofu soup you wanted (we got the seafood one). You do have to request for an egg in your soup, but again, no additional charge. They were the only place that provided free water station in the food court. The prices were pretty comparable to other korean restaurants. The tofu soup was super good (and hot!), but the pork belly was a little bland. I do wish there was more seasoning on the pork belly or that we ordered a different meat. I also wish a few more sides were included. Overall, though, I did like this restaurant and would return to get another tofu soup! read more

AMAZING FOOD AND STAFF. Went last Sunday to eat here. For some reason the cook was alone, attending customers and cooking, and he did great!! even though there were so many people asking for dishes. All plates we asked for tasted great (as always here) and the guy took less time serving than in many restaurants that have 5 times as much staff. This seems to be an express version of Jang Guem Tofu & BBQ, with it being tucked inside the latest HMart in Katy. Having visited the Bellaire (ChinaTown) & Sugar Land locations, I have always liked their food and menu options. Service at this location was a bit dull and lackluster. I ordered a tofu soup with mushrooms and asked for kimchi in my soup. When my soup came out, it was not bubbling, as it typically does in these cast iron bowls. There was no kimchi in sight and the flavour was not as spicy and sharp as it normally is. I also noticed that my soup did not come with a side of egg. Typically, you crack the raw egg into your hot soup and mix it well. For this reason the soup was very watery without the creaminess of the egg binding factor. Normally it has a stew like consistency with lots of ingredients. My friend went up to the register and asked for an egg; in which case the lady said they don't have that as an option. Although, when I finished up my meal and went up to the register, a small sign mentioned that you can ask for an egg upon request. That was a bit strange considering she said "no" to my friend. The typical banchan was limited to three items. At the other locations you are given a full tray of six banchan items. Given this is the express version, some of your favorites my not be included. The seafood pancake was surprisingly crispy and made well. Not too soft and doughy as it is with the other locations. The ingredients in the pancake were balanced nicely and the overall texture was crispy, even after 10 minutes. It was probably my favorite item while dining here. Overall my meal was just okay. At least it was healthy? Many of the restaurant options inside the cafeteria are limited. You'll find pop-ups serving fried food and other greasy items. That is not my cup of tea. Think i'll just stick to visiting this particular HMart for grocery and not for grabbing a snack/meal. read more

I would like to begin expressing this post is my opinion and my opinion along based on the experience we received. Everything we ordered came out at a reasonable time. I ordered the classic Bibimbob and my wife ordered the combination BBQ and Tofu soup. The bibmbob was a bit under seasoned for my pallet but they did give you plenty of go chu jang sauce for additional seasoning w/ heat. The rice was soft with bits of crispy ends along the heated stone pot. The Korean ribs came out a bit chewy, I think the cut was select grade. The tofu soup was nice with a classic raw egg added right before serving. The sides of kimchi, I think tofu cake, and potato salad were that came along with the dish is always a nice compliment. Overall, the meal was satisfying and remain one of our go to place when we shop in Katy Asian Town. My rating is based on the following criteria: 1. Food quality (4/5) The food wasn't fantastic; however it was simple in flavors to meet general expectations. 2. Service/cleanliness (5/5) The service is friend and since they are part of the food court in H-Mart the overall area is very clean. 3. Value (5/5) For the money spent on the quality of food, they have a lower than market price point so you get what you paid for.
