So yep, my rating is going from 4 to 2 stars because of my experience last night. I even had time to start writing this review on my phone while we were there. My friend Mike N. was able to submit his updated Yelp review while we were there! After being seated at a table, it took us over an hour to receive our entrees. In a group of 4, one person got their sashimi plate about 30 min into the wait, and then 2 got their entrees about 55 minutes, and I received mine last, at least 1 hr and 10 min since we all placed our order. About 45 minutes into the wait we had to ASK for our salads! You might be wondering, "Well was it busy?" Uh yes it was, every table was full, and that was the reason why this was so terrible. I wouldn't have been as annoyed if someone in the staff took the time to acknowledge they were behind. Once we did get the food, it was only meh. The service really did a number on how much we enjoyed our food. It's sad we were there for like 2 hours, 20 minutes of which was spent eating. I really don't know if I'd come back again any time soon. So be warned: don't come when it's busy, because you'll be waiting forever!! read more

I love this sushi place! I have been living around in Covina for two yrs and struggled to find a sushi place that is close by and is fresh. Well... Search no more! The sashimi is fresh all the time. The sushi roll is good. Btw- if you want to make it worth ur $- order rainbow roll- 12.50- 8-10 pieces of fresh fish on top of a california roll. This is the absolutely wierdest place to find the fresh sushi. An ex-coworker showed me this gem off the beaten track east of LA. Best time to go is Thursday night when they get delivery for the weekend. Just order from the check list and find out that the real measure of freshness is how good the uni is. I have only gotten takeout here so I do not know how their service is. I got the salmon sushi with the salmon and yellowtail hand rolls. The sushi was really good and the hand rolls were okay, everything tasted pretty fresh. AYCE is a better deal, especially if you like sushi more than rolls. Great secluded place. It is an intimate setting with wonderful sushi chefs. The sushi is always tasty, fresh, and large amounts!

I can't comment on the sashimi, so I'm just going to comment and review my own dishes. Orderd the 3 bento combo special as well as some appetizers for a lunch meeting I had here. From the outside, this place looks tiny, a complete whole in the wall, but to our surprise, it was actually a lot bigger than we had imagined. We came here to eat because of the 4+ star reviews, and from what people said, sounded pretty decent. But the food presentation, quality, and taste, was just very very average. And to a certain degree, it was disappointing for the price. Perhaps its my own taste palate , but to pay around $37 for a lunch tab featuring a chirashi bowl that was very average, and not too fresh, as well as a 3 bento combo, and some nibblers for the table, just felt like a teribble waste. This is our go to Japanese restaurant. We used to drive to little tokyo but thank goodness for Yashima. Their combo meal offers so much quality cooked food such as bbq ribs, salmon/beef/chicken teriyaki, tonkatsu and etc at VERY reasonable price. If sushi/sashimi is your thing, look no further in the area. This is it! Salmon/tuna/yellow fish/ uni are all my favorite here. Sometimes when I sit and compose these reviews, I am suddenly hit by the memory of some long-ago experience or life lesson that, mysteriously, relates quite well to my dining experience. So here's the one I'm having right now after dining at Yashima. Years ago, I lived in a zen monastery in Japan. In the beginning I was quite ignorant of the rules of etiquette. Poor me. At my first breakfast, I found myself quite hungry after the previous night's journey to the temple. As food was being passed around, I took good, American-sized portions, and unceremoniously began wolfing it down. A few minutes into the meal, I looked up to find that the rest of the monks were done eating and were quietly starting to pack up their bowls. In a kind of panic, I picked up the pace, hoping to somehow catch up. It was no use. The head priest, taking no pity, banged his gavel on an old oak stump, signalling the end of the meal. Everyone got up, bowed and left the dining hall. The last monk flipped off the lights, putting final emphasis on the lesson for this poor American kid sitting all alone in the dark, wondering what in the world he had gotten himself into. I believe the monks were trying to tell me that this could very well be your last meal, so you better savor every bite and take nothing for granted. I try to remember that these days. When you come to Yashima, you will eat and eat well. But you will also linger over your meal, gazing in wonder at the fresh and delicately crafted sushi, every grain of rice in its proper place. You will take slow bites out of crisp tempura, the contrasting textures of batter and shrimp melting in your mouth. You might try their chicken teriyaki, as carefully prepared as any you've tried before. Everything is well thought out, prepared and served, with no loose ends. At Yashima you will be served and served well. The owner and staff will make sure that, as you typically leave your shoes at the door upon entering Japanese homes, you symbolically leave the trials and tribulations of the world outside. Yes, they might be busy, but not too busy to stop and chat with you for awhile about Japan, about how you discovered the restaurant, whatever. At Yashima you will not be rushed out the door. So have some more tea or sake and savor the moment, it is precious. read more

I came to this establishment for lunch because a family member of mine raved about this place. Walked in right when it opened and ordered the sashimi platter to start. Thank god that's the only thing I ordered because the fish wasn't fresh at all. The salmon lacks the fatty flavor that it should have, the tuna felt like it's been sitting in the refrigerator for a few days or weeks. It was not good. I've been coming here for years. I love its quality (fresh), location (very close), and staff (actually japanese and friendly).

My friends took me to eat here for my bday. We got there a few minutes after they opened for the lunch specials. I got california rolls (6), and teriyaki chicken. Overall I liked the place. Food was good. It kind of reminded me of Tokyo Lobby. I wanted to try the green tea ice cream but didn't have enough room in the tummy. Only negative thing was that I had to return my plastic soup spoon because it still had someone else's lipstick on it (guess it wasn't washed properly). :o( read more

I have been coming to this place for nearly 10 years, the portion are huge, food is excellent. Just ask the chef's to make you something special off the menu. The price is very reasonable. Hideo and Masao are the chef's who have been there since the place opened over 20 years ago. I have drank so many sake shots an beers with them, I think I forgot. If you purchase a bottle of sake and don't finish it just write your name on it and they will save it for your next visit. LOVE THIS PLACE! Sushi is always on point! The have the best Baked Lobster Roll around! The staff is friendly, although if you are there when it's busy, dont expect too much attention so have your order ready, that's the case with most restaurants. Atmosphere is pretty chill, nothing fancy about the joint, they have a TV and will have sports on most of the time. Thier 911 Roll is great as well, we can never leave without getting the stuffed jalapenos as well. I've had a few other local places and this one is always our "go to". This is my favorite sushi restaurant, I have tried many, but none can compete with the portions and flavors. The portions are so much bigger than any high end sushi place. I have been coming here for years! The stuffed jalapeño, fire crunchy, lobster dynamite and albacore carpaccio are amazing! We were looking for a new Sushi place in Covina since Bishamon, another Sushi place we use to frequent, started serving sushi with fish that didn't seem fresh. This place had great reviews and definitely holds up to their reputation. The Nigiri sushi is so good. It melts in your mouth. Miso soup is so tasty too. We've been here maybe 10 years ago and it's still here. Kinda small dining room, but lunch fare was fresh and well made. I also loved the Japanese wall art and overall ambiance. Waitresses became chatty after I told them I watch KWAI-DAN Japanese movies. The food was served after a little wait but OK and satisfying. We will be back, sooner than 10 years. I wish I could give this place less than a 0. The food was very mediocre and the service was terrible. Just terrible. Wow. It was like we weren't even there. We could have served ourselves and it would have been faster. My wife and I get there and are seated relatively quickly. We order and I get my food, (this is no joke), 45 minutes before my wife ever sees any of hers. During this time, our waitress never comes to check on us. I try making eye contact with her as she continually walks by our table. She avoids making eye contact with me. While this is happening, there are a couple of other tables who are getting their food way quicker than we are getting our. Their plates come, one after the other. Rapid fire. I think the chefs were taking their time making all the items for one table rather than making certain items for tall the tables. If this is true, this is a terribly stupid way to run a restaurant. My wife eventually gets her first plate. Then about fifteen minutes later she gets her second plate. As she is eating, we hear waitress talking to each other about our order. They are trying to shoo us out. We know this because they are speaking English. Then, as soon as my wife is done with her final bite, BAM! The check is on our table. They couldn't wait to get us out of there. Worst of all, they charged us for something they never even gave us. We had to tell them to take it off the bill. No apologies on their end of course.
