I usually don't Yelp in the heat of the moment, but I'm making an exception in hopes that I save you from yourself- and from your shrunk clothing. I have been going to this place, which is on the block where I live, for 2 years. Many of my items have come back smaller than they went in- but I blamed myself- thinking that I must have been bloated/or packing on the pounds with that late night Columbia Law reading. Until now. I've been losing weight and my clothes have been shrinking at an even faster pace. When my favorite Banana Republic black skirt suit came back 2 sizes smaller than it went in, I finally put my foot down. I went in and very nicely and calmly expressed my sadness at losing my favorite skirt because they shrunk it. The man who is always there told me he would RE DRY CLEAN IT. What? That is not a solution. After I made clear that this would make the problem worse, not better, he said his manager would need to look at the skirt before they could pay me. PLEASE NOTE: THERE IS A REASON THIS IS THE FIRST CLEANER YOU EVER SAW WITH A SIGN ON THE PAYMENT COUNTER ABOUT SHRUNK/DAMAGED ITEMS POLICY. ALSO NOTE: THEY DO NOT FOLLOW THEIR OWN STATED POLICY!!!!!!!!! I came back after a week (ridiculous), and he told me the skirt had not shrunk. After telling him all the reasons I was CERTAIN it shrank, including because I held it up to another skirt the same size, also from banana, in the same cut, and it was smaller---he LAUGHED AT ME. I asked to speak to his manager who had made this ad hoc determination, and he just giggled again. I told him his own policy said they paid up to 10x the price of cleaning the item for shrunk clothing (luckily their prices are so high it probably would have covered the value of the skirt.....), and he still maintained that the skirt had not shrunk.... My roommate warned me that her stuff had shrunk, others did as well. Yelp did too. I made the mistake of valuing the convenience of this location over finding a business that does QUALITY WORK and has the INTEGRITY to admit when they fuck up... AVOID AT ALL COSTS, INCLUDING THE HASSLE OF A WALK TO A FURTHER AWAY CLEANERS! Would give 0 if that was a possibility. Sent a couple shirts in for dry cleaning more than a week ago. Told to come back in 3 days. Not ready. A week later, I called and asked to have it delivered to our house. They said it would come between 8 and 9AM. Had plans today so needed to get out of the house by 10 so said that would be fine. Come 10:20...still not here. I all them and they say the earliest they can come now is 1PM. WTF? Why say you'll be here ridiculously early if you can't come till the afternoon at the earliest? THEN, the shirts come back and SOMEHOW they've managed to crack all the buttons on the front of the shirt. They must have held the iron on them too long or something. Never had that happen before. Bring your clothes here at your own risk--there's a good chance you will never see them again. A year ago this was a decent, reliable cleaner; but since then, it's plunged into the 10th level of hell. Not only are they *regularly* 2-3 days late returning my clothes, often the staff are so disorganized that they can't find clothes their own records indicate are on the premises, so you still have to wait 1-2 days more for the ones that showed up on time. On 2 separate occasions they lost some of my nicer items (and refused to replace them)--and even when I do get them back, almost half the time they smell of riper B.O. than when I dropped them off. With my best stuff missing and my "clean" stuff rank, I jokingly wondered whether this place was running some sort of racket with my stuff. Seeing now that others have had similar experiences, I'm starting think this thesis has some merit. But whatever the explanation, they clearly aren't doing their job and can't keep track of their volume. It's awful. My advice: avoid this place. Go to Grace Cleaners over at 123rd & St. Nick. They're organized and take their work much more seriously. They're worth every second of that extra 5 minute walk. But whatever you do, don't go here. read more

I went to them to have a new zipper put in a winter coat. I would NEVER go back. The job was ok but they said it would take a full week. When I called the morning after a week I was told it would be ready the following week. It was only when I insisted that all of a sudden I was told it would be ready that afternoon. When I went to pick it up, I struggled opening the zipper and thought it was misaligned. I was then mocked in Chinese as one staff member spoke to another. Though I was wrong about the zipper and it was fine, it's never a great feeling to be mocked, in any language. STAY AWAY -- LATE, DIRTY, MISSING! This used to be a reliable cleaner until the past year. Zero star rating. Ex: several suits smelled like horrible B.O. after they "cleaned it"... But my clothes weren't smelly or that dirty to begin with. I had to get it cleaned again (and they tried to charge me again) but it still has a residual funky smell. Ex: they lost some very nice clothes of mine worth hundreds of dollars. The staff refuse to give me the owner's name and number, they keep saying he'll call me but it's been months and I haven't gotten a hold of him. From what I read in the other reviews, other customers also are experiencing the same problem..I wonder if it's only because they're disorganized or if they are stealing my designer clothes to resell. read more

AVOID! They lost my most expensive dress shirt the first time I had it laundered. I gave them weeks to find it and they never did. Then they told me they would reimburse me, but they jerked me around and avoided my calls for literally 5 MONTHS until I finally threatened to file a complaint with the BBB. All of a sudden they told me insurance wouldn't cover my shirt, even though they had previously told me the insurance check was on the way, and they would have to pay out of pocket. I did finally get a check, and I would be more appreciative if it hadn't taken half a year of being treated like a chump and the threat of a formal complaint to finally get reimbursed. I also have a friend who has had TWO SUITS lost by them. He similarly said they didn't reimburse him until he threatened to take them to small claims court. My (now ex-)girlfriend took some clothes there and they stained two of her blouses the first time. I know this sounds like a joke, but I am 100% serious about all of this. Send me a private message if you want. To top it off, the dry cleaning isn't great in general. My shirts often came back with creases in the shoulder and collar. I only used them because they were right around the corner. I'm really not sure why this place gets such a bad rep. Both the manager as well as the tailor were friendly, and the service was perfect. The tailor may come off as being a bit brusk, but he's still polite and does his job well! The bridesmaid dress I got tailored (because I couldn't fit into it) now fits perfectly (with just enough breathing room too). I can't speak to the fairness of their prices because I've never gotten a bridesmaid dress tailored before so I'm not sure if what I paid was an outrageous amount. Should be called ye olde IRREPARABLY STAINS YOUR CLOTHES shop. I have never written a review on yelp for any store, but ye olde cleaners has inspired me to write. A few months ago I purchased a custom tailored shirt from downtown. It was by far the most expensive clothing purchase I have ever made (aside from a couple of suits), and as a graduate student I do not have a lot of money to throw around. I bought it specifically for upcoming interviews and was very excited to have it. My tailor told me to have it pressed before wearing it and he gave me specific instructions to tell the cleaners. I decided to go the Ye olde cleaning shop because it is close to where I live. So I brought the shirt and and gave them the instructions as communicated to me by the tailor. I received the pink return slip and all seemed well. I picked up the shirt a couple of days later and cheerfully brought it to my apartment to try it on. Uh oh. There was a small but extremely noticeable dark black mark on the left front breast of the shirt. It was as if someone had taken a pen and rubbed it a few cm.. in either direction. I had that sinking feeling in my stomach because this shirt was suddenly no longer interview worthy. I immediately returned the cleaners and very nicely suggested to the man behind that counter, who had helped me both at drop off and pickup, that perhaps something had gone wrong in the cleaning process. I explained that it was a brand new shirt, never worn outside of my tailors shop. In fact I had taken it directly out of the tailor's box and handed it to the dry cleaners. I told him that it was a custom shirt and very important to me. In response, the man behind the counter hardly said a word, but rather took the shirt, examined the mark, and stated, "That's not a pen mark." Then, he ran up something in the computer, gave me a slip and somewhat harshly exclaimed, "three days." Now at this point I should have grabbed the shirt back and gotten out of there. Any establishment that will stain your garment, and then seem annoyed that you brought it to their attention, should be avoided. And i knew it then. but I thought that maybe they could fix the stain. Heck they are a dry cleaners right? So three days later I show up, and the same man tells me the shirt is "on it's way," but hasn't arrived yet. Ok. Fine. So I leave, and come back the next day. The same man searches for the shirt for a few minutes, and guess what, he can't find it. He looks bewildered. He tells me to give him my phone number and he'll call me. At this point, I'm still acting extremely polite because I really want it all to work out, as the dry cleaners is so close. Of course, hours later, I still hadn't received a call. So I call them. And this time a lady picks up and tells me she found it. Great! So I go down the next day to pick up the shirt, but again the guy can't find it. Pretty ridiculous. So same thing over again. I call later that evening and the woman tells me it is definitely there.The next day I go back and indeed, this time, it's there. I take it back to my apartment and check it out. Quite unhappily, the stain is still in the breast pocket, but now there's a new addition to my interview shirt: red stains all over the cuffs! At this point I'm quite frustrated and bring the shirt back to show them what's happened The guy hardly says a word, sort of smirks when I explain that I have to bring it to another dry cleaners to try and fix the damage they have done, and then merely offers to try and fix it again. ha! Fooled me once! I never received an apology, or an offer of reimbursement for another dry cleaners. The other dry cleaners I brought it to has been unable to remove the stains. Ye Olde cleaning shop stained my shirt and did so with little remorse. If you have any interest in your clothes, steer clear of this place. read more

Used this place all year for dry cleaning and the tailor since it was the down the street from my dorm. The service was very nice, they are very efficient and I've never had a problem. In fact, I even once had to have them do a rush steaming job and they were extremely accommodating. Also brought a shirt to get cleaned (that has been properly cleaned before for way worse levels of dirtiness) and they couldn't get the minimal wear marks out. This dry cleaner and tailor is horrible. 1. I brought a shirt in with a makeup stain and after cleaning it the employee said he was not able to remove the stain. I tried this dry cleaning place because it was conveniently located down the street from my dorm. It's kind of hit or miss. My peacoat came back smelling like some weird chemical. They cleaned my almost-new sweater (the first time it was ever cleaned), and introduced stains all over. After 3 iterations of trying to get these stains off, they are unable to do so, are now accusing me of lying (saying the stains were mine), and are refusing to compensate me. Dropped them off on a Tuesday, they said come back Friday---the pants weren't done. I came back Monday--pants weren't done. Tuesday! The pants were done (1 week later). The stitching was loose and horrendous (one little snag and the entire hem would have come out) and they never pressed down the hem. It looked very sloppy. I asked them to re-do them. They said come back tomorrow (Wednesday). I arrived on Thursday, THEY WEREN'T DONE. I do not know how this place is still in business. GO ELSEWHERE. I lived in the area for four years, and Ye Olde was often the most convenient dry cleaner due to proximity. For four years I used them off and on--more off than on as time went on--and I can definitively say that the service stinks. They are expensive, rude, and mess stuff up. Whenever you go in--despite what appears to have been a total staff change in the past two years--the people are very rude. I've had work that has been given over to be tailored actually lost by Ye Olde for months. I've had a pair of pants that had been resized fall apart after one or two uses because something like one thread was holding the work they did together. Many times dry cleaned shirts would be returned with new very small black smudges. Also, twice during my four years using the place, the store opened or closed very late or early. I remember when I first moved in the area no one showed up for the 9am opening until 11 or noon. Then just this past year, they closed fifteen minutes early when I had called just before and told them I was coming to pick up my wash and fold. ONE MAJOR CAVEAT: Despite once losing something I sent to be tailored and once my pants falling apart, they in other instances did decent work hemming and narrowing pants. I didn't really find a place that was better in the area for this type of work, so Ye Olde may sadly be your best bet in the area. Slim pickin's. Although it is a hike, I would recommend Columbia Cleaners (see my review: http://bit.ly/12SbDga). They're very nice, family operated, and they are an awesome value (dry cleaning a dress shirt is something like $2-3 and wash and fold is 80¢/pound). read more

It's a shame that zero stars is not an option in Yelp. This place has the worst quality of any dry cleaners I have used in my life. After ruining a few of my shirts I made the big mistake of sending in a bed cover that they completely ruined. I understand that sometimes these things can happen, but they did not want to accept any sort of responsibility. All they said and I quote, "Sorry, we did our best and there is nothing more we can do to help." I am a Columbia student and used this place for proximity reasons, but after the multiple things they ruined it would have been cheaper to pay a cab and go to the next closest cleaners. I've used this place for the past year or so and have had consistently good service. The wash and fold laundry is generally a 24 hr turn around, and wash and press/ dry cleaning is 48 hr. The staff is really nice and speaks clear English. I disagree with most of these 1-star reviews that say the people are unhelpful when there are problems with the clothes. I had one issue where a suit button fell off while being cleaned and they happily replaced it as well as took the suit in question off of the bill. It's a well run place that is inexpensive, consistent, and reliable; what more can you want from a cleaner. read more

I can't even say the customer service here was terrible--it is nonexistent! At this soul-crushing dry cleaner, expect to be confronted with a barrage of unhelpful, rude, and inflexible staff. As a further disincentive to visit these guys, they also do not provide a remotely quick service: it takes 5-7 days for any given item to be cleaned, when other places have turned it around in 2-3. Bottom line: your clothes will be clean, but no guarantees they won't lose your item, be generally rude to you throughout the process, and/or pretend like they don't understand you when you express an opinion about anything. I've had enough with this place, finish. When you drop it off always check the price on the ticket. Last time, I was in rush so I just put the ticket in my pocket thinking there will be regular service price. I was shocked when I pick it up. Simple stitching cost $20, and dropped several items for cleaning well over $50. Service is not good either, always come back even dingier than before. So what's the point? Wash n' fold is outrageously expensive and they don't offer any same day service. I looked thru the neighbor and found one on 121 St. Broadway, they do same day service and price is 2/3 that of ye olde. Or there is one on 124 St. St. Nicholas Ave. very friendly service. Also not sure why the place gets poor reviews. Both managers I've worked with are very friendly and helpful. I had a stain that wouldn't come out and they re-did it for free. Another time, they accidentally lumped a couple items with someone else's order and were super apologetic about the mistake and had the missing items in the store that day, so it was like they weren't lost at all. Definitely honest compared to other cleaners that shrug off those mistakes and don't even offer to compensate for lost items. They also are familiar with the customers and it definitely seems like a local place, which is rare with a lot of businesses like this so close to Columbia's campus. I brought a suit jacket here that I'd gotten paint on (thanks a lot MTA) and they cleaned it up for less than ten bucks. It took twice as long as they said it would, but with the amount of paint on the jacket I wasn't shocked or angry. It is only the fact that they kept telling me "come back tomorrow" for about 6 straight days that keeps this from being four stars. Awful! I didn't want to believe the reviews. How bad could it be, right? I dropped off four shirts to be laundered and pressed and a bag of clothes to be laundered and folded at 7:30 AM. I asked if I could pick them up at 6:30 PM. No. They do not have same day service. I would need to wait until mid-day tomorrow. OK, a drag, but not a big deal. The employee processed the four shirts ($20) an then dumped out my bag of laundry and started picking through my underwater and t-shirts, pants socks. I was confused. I repeated that I wanted it laundered and folded, the employee looked surprised, then said OK and put my clothes back in the bag. He did not weigh the bag, which I found odd. ($10) I came back in the evening of the next day (Friday), one of my four shirts was bit ready. Again, odd. They wanted me to come back Monday. I was leaving town on Sunday, so they agreed that I could come back on Saturday. OK, no problem. My bag of laundered and folded clothes was open which I thought was odd. I got back to where I was staying to change into my freshly laundered pants...they weren't there! They lost my pants! When asked about it the employee blamed the service that they use. Said, "I have no proof" and refused to refund my $10 for the laundry service. After much arguing, they did not charge me for the shirt that was returned to me late ($2.50). I really hate this dry cleaners. They always leave staples and safety pins in my clothing, even when I've requested they make sure not to. I hate getting back an expensive silk blouse or cashmere sweater to find it has holes in it from their careless treatment. The woman who works at reception can also be really curt. I live close by and used to love this place. It has gone downhill since new management/ownership. They are rude, expensive, and don't even try to work with you when they ruin your clothes. I recently had two silk shirts "dry cleaned". I took the shirts out of the plastic and saw huge ink spots on both items. When I went back with the items I very calmly said we need to find a solution. The guy behind the desk simply said he thought I did this to my own clothes and that he "disagreed" that they had anything to do with it. I had literally just taken the items out of the plastic the night before. I got very upset and he simply said, after repeatedly saying I disagree, I disagree, I disagree, that they can't just give money out every time clothes are ruined. That alone made it clear that this happens frequently. I will never go again and suggest the same for you. They are terrible and a very irresponsible business.
