Very easy ordering process, recently ordered assorted cookies for Valentine's Day. Order was packaged securely, cookies were very fresh and everyone was happy to see the familiar Bovella's box of treats on our kitchen counter. Fudge filled American butter cookies and rainbow cookies are still our family's favorite!

We were greeted as soon as we walked in... and then I quickly realized there were THREE people behind the counter. We were the only ones there for a few moments before another family walked in behind us. They had gone there before so generally knew what they wanted. Me? Not so much. Despite how many people were working at the time, there were no explanations or help... but they do respond to questions. They have a few small tables but it's a relatively small store. There are display cases filled with cookies, pastries, cupcakes, and cakes. Lots of character in there, but nothing is labeled and there are no prices other than the cookies (they're purchased by weight... 1 lb is 10 cookies). I sort of ran with it, but since I don't know the names of half the items, this will be a more general review. I grabbed a lobster tail and a sfogliatelle. They look similar at first glance... but when I asked, they are definitely NOT the same thing. In fact, she sounded a bit offended I asked. Hahaha. She mentioned something about the sfogliatelle being baked? It also comes in two sizes and I got the large. I later ate them and... I'm not too sure what the difference is because they're similar in shape. The lobster tail seems to be a flaky pastry that was cut in half and the cream piped in. The sfogliatelle was not cut but it was filled as well and I'm pretty sure they added orange zest to it... I liked that. The lobster tail didn't have any citrus that I remembered. I enjoyed them... but we ate them the next day. They weren't the crispiest then. Also got two large cannoli's filled with the regular cream. Plus a cream puff filled with "custard" (you can opt for ricotta instead). And an interesting beige white tart and a teeny fruit tart (I actually wanted the bigger fruit tart but they got the mini one instead... I didn't notice until we got home since everything is packed behind the counter). Cannolis were pretty good! Lots of cream and the shells were still crisp, but you could taste the oil since they're deep fried. I should have gotten the smaller size so the proportions would have been more balanced. The cream puff was a cream puff? Nice and light with the thick filling inside that wasn't too sweet. The fruit tart was good with a standard sweet tart shortbread crust. The mystery lattice tart thing was good as well! Not sweet and had very interesting flavors... fairly certain almonds were a part of it. Probably a version of frangipane? My daughter got a Spider-Man cupcake. Their cupcakes have a thin icing type topping instead of your typical piped frosting on top. They're also filled with a buttery frosting that isn't too sweet! I was pleasantly surprised. I was apprehensive when she was adamant on getting that cupcake because they're often overly sweet. I would like to note that a lot of their creams/custard filled goodies use the same filling. And it's not what I expected. Custard, it said. The filling was definitely more dense, not too sweet (a great thing), but also slightly grainy. I can't say they were eggy and they were far from the consistency of pudding. I'm thinking they might be ricotta based? The most loose "filling" we ate was probably the cannoli cream. Overall, I'm not sure exactly what I ate since they never really went the extra step or elaborated when I asked questions. Very to the point for a group of teenagers who were behind the counter. They were nice? But sort of uninterested. They seemed a little more enthusiastic about the other family. Oh yes. I also ordered a coffee for my husband... which wasn't rung up. I went back wondering where it was and it turns out it was forgotten about but we did eventually get it. He got a large and it is a HUGE cup. So... the goodies were pretty good. I was surprised in several ways - the fact I'm not too sure what I ordered and that they were perfectly sweet. But I found service lacking a bit. I will likely go back again if I'm in the area but I'd probably be just as clueless. We would have tried the goodies there and stayed longer but one of my kids has multiple food allergies and the place doesn't seem great for that (or for non-regulars) so we ate them later when our kid could have something as well. The pastries ended up being about $4-5 each and the cupcake was $4.50 - so the total adds up FAST. There is an automatic 3.75% service charge that was added on... not sure what that's about? The total was about $40 at the end, not including tip. My rating is a 3 because though I generally enjoyed the treats I got, I have mixed feelings due to the experience on this first visit as a whole. I'm hoping my future visits will be better.

Park out front, or on residential streets around the corner. Get fresh daily baked baguettes, French boules, Italian breads and rolls, and whole wheat loaves. Especially known for their hamburger and hot dog rolls, or "longs" as they are called, sausage and pepperoni breads, and ring-shaped pizza breads. Also, butter croissants, sfogliatelle, and Italian cookies. Also cheesecakes, cannolis, tarts and other pastries when the baker is so inclined. They also sell fresh pizza dough. The people in the shop are kindly, and prices are cheap. Walking in here is like a time warp which takes me back to my childhood. My aunt and uncle lived a block up from this place, and one of my earliest food memories as a kid was summer cookouts in their backyard. My uncle made great Newark-style deep-fried Italian hot dogs w/peppers & onions on these rolls.

It wasn't too sweet either. I also got hot chocolate which I think was some of the best I've had. It tasted so smooth, light and rich at the same time and kinda of like chocolate marshmallows! The place can get crowded and it's small, so you end up waiting cramped inside for your drinks. As you wait though you can watch the bakers decorate the cookies which is pretty cool. Service is friendly, got our order wrong initially and had to refund and do it again. It's crowded and loud so understandable. Plenty of parking in the lots across or on the street.

The bakery can get a bit crazy and crammed, it's fairly small, and there's a lot going on, especially on the weekends. The staff move quickly to get orders ready and out, everyone works efficiently. As for the treats, my fiancé has enjoyed a variety of goodies from there, especially the cupcakes. I usually opt for a box of the gluten-free (also vegan) raspberry bars. The box is definitely pricey, so it's absolutely a treat for me to splurge on myself. Overall, the spot is worth a visit to while near Maplewood if you have a sweet tooth or need a caffeine fix.

I brought the decorations and even met with Joe Murphy himself. Joe took down my order, sketched the design of the cake, reviewed the colors, and theme personally. The theme of the party was born 2 ball and I asked for a basketball themed sheet cake with orange and green frosting. First the frosting was pastel pink/orange (see photos) and sea foam green. Clearly nothing like the colors discussed - then the drawing he created was supposed to have the ball decorations cascading down the side. As you can see in the photo it looks like my 2 year old son haphazardly placed them with absolutely no care of design whatsoever. On top of the above disgraceful items when I called I was assured I would be contacted to rectify and discuss that they gave my husband at pick up a cake with THE WRONG COLORS, NO DESIGN, AND DOUBLE THE SIZE ORDERED. I was never called back, there was zero respect or apologies. When I called the girl even said "oh the basketball theme cake" - please take a look and let me know, do you see a basketball theme cake or any care taken at all? Disgracefully disrespectfulI
