There are plenty of parking but since there are multiple restaurants there, they get packed pretty soon. We went right at opening at 10:30am so it was pretty easy to find a parking spot and were seated as their first customers. We ordered the beef chow fun, pork cheek and beef with black bean sauce. All three dishes were well seasoned and flavored nicely. None of them were salty so we were able to finish all three dishes. The dipping sauce for the pork cheek was tasty with a strong flavor of ginger. It also went well with the black bean sauce. The rice that came with the beef with black bean sauce dish was slightly undercooked but I think it is because we were the first customers. Some parts of it was cooked but some were still hard. Other than that, they were great. Customer service was great as well with friendly staff and the restaurant was clean. Earlier this week, a much-needed break was in order, so I reached out to family if they wanted to grab lunch. I was thinking about some places in Chinatown that I haven't been to in a while but then it was suggested Yi Xin Café (YXC), the Hong Kong Chinese style diner at Market City Shopping Center. I have been wanting to come here, but more so for dinner to try their curry and chili crabs. I easily agreed where I wrapped things up and headed over here. YXC took over the spot previously occupied by Anytime Café, another HK style diner. I was the first to arrive and the restaurant was empty as it was before 11am. I checked out the picture menu poster on their window and the food looked promising with dishes from Hong Kong, Singapore, and Southeast Asia. It was a blessing to have the kiddies come along to justify my ordering of more dishes as I was keen on sampling an array of food and here's the breakdown of what we ate: Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Wings (4.5/5) I've seen photos of this appetizer and it sure didn't disappoint. Chicken wings were deep fried with a crunchy exterior coating and then tossed around in a salted duck egg yolk sauce that brought umami to the wings. The wings were delivered to our table piping hot. The sauce wasn't overpowering and paired well. I double ordered this dish and noticed the inconsistency of size of the wing flats - - some big and some unpleasantly small where it was overcooked and thus dry. Hong Kong Style Garlic Shrimp (4.5/5) Large shrimps on the shell were deep-fried and then tossed with flavorful garlic chips/sauce. It was highly suggested by my family as they ate this before. It was good but temperature wise, the shrimp were not piping hot. It sat out for a bit before being served to us. Sizzling Beef with Black Bean Sauce (5/5) Our waitress warn that the plate was hot and I'm sure glad it was because this dish lived up to the hype. Tender beef was cooked with perfectly executed bell peppers and onions in a tasty black bean sauce. You could also taste the WOK HEI. I really appreciated when the veggies are al dente in a dish like this. I am not a fan of overcooked, soft vegetables. Fried Green Beans with Minced Pork and Shrimp Paste (5/5) The chef here is talented as this dish also had WOK HEI. The beans still had a nice crunch, and it was flavorful. Solid dish. Shrimp Chow Funn with Runny Egg Sauce (4.75/5) I have fond memories of first eating this dish at Ken Fong, a long-time Chinese restaurant on N Hotel St in the 80's. This dish delivered and the WOK HEI was evidenced in the chow funn noodles. Loved the shrimp and egg sauce, sans the carrots and green peas. Is it just me but I really feel the usage of frozen vegetables like such downgrades the dish. Next time I'll ask to omit them when I order. Beef Bittermelon Chow Funn with Black Bean Sauce (5/5) Another well executed dish. Kudos to the chef for the WOK HEI presence again. Bittermelon was cooked al dente and the bitterness from the melon was tamed well. Dish was tasty but lacked heat, so we asked for chili oil or satay sauce but sadly YXC doesn't offer this to their customers. The sambal sauce on the table didn't pair well for our palates. Indonesian Chicken Fried Rice (3/5) My sister wanted to try this dish and it seemed promising, but it was just meh to me. Perhaps I was expecting for more when I saw "Indonesian", but the dish lacked depth and flavors that I associate with Indonesia. Szechuan Spicy Beef Fried Rice with Black Beans (3/5) Favorite nephew by default requested this dish and another disappointment. Dish wasn't spicy at all. Lacked flavor and depth. Chili oil or satay sauce would have saved this dish but as stated above, this condiment is not available. Our family is not a fan of sambal sauce. Baked Pork Chop with Tomato Sauce and Cheese over Fried Rice (4/5) BIL requested this dish, and this was good, but not exceptional. The pork chop was boneless and chopped up for easy consumption. However, a boneless pork chop doesn't taste as good as a bone-in pork chop. I also ordered their signature drinks of Hong Kong Milk Tea and Lemon Tea and had mixed reviews from us. The milk teas we've had at Hong Kong style cafes in Chinatown are better but the lemon tea here was better. Service was spotty at first but later during our meal the staff picked up their game. Restaurant was empty when we arrived, and it took forever to get a waitress to come to us. We were shocked Hot tea not served. With all the food I ordered for 5 people, we had to ask for individual bowls be brought to us as eating fried rice on small plates with chopsticks is challenging. But later when more food came, staff came to check up on us. Overall, an impressive first visit at YXC where I'm keen to add the to our rotation of restaurants. Next time I'd like to return for dinner to try their curry and Singaporean chili crabs, as well as other dishes on their menu. read more

I had heard lots of great things about the Chinese restaurant Yi Xin Cafe so I was eager to take my parents. Located in Market City Shopping Center, the restaurant specializes in Hong Kong, Malaysian and Singaporean cuisines and features many crab dishes.   Of course we had to start with their super popular and cute milk teas topped with an iced teddy bear. We also snacked on cheesy french fries while we waited for our main dishes: Beef Chow Funn, Sizzling Beef with Blackbean sauce, and Mapo Tofu. The food was tasty and the flavors were as expected so it provided us with that familiar comfort.  We really enjoyed our meal. Service was great and friendly too! I was very sad that I didn't get in highly coveted YEE spot on MLK Jr Day because date, time, and HK cuisine worked in favor of my leisure. However, it probably wasn't meant to be at that time and I stopped dwelling on hypothetical scenarios. My husband probably sensed my no tears, silent sadness. I was very surprised the night before he suggested and wanted to dine here for Saturday lunch. He admitted that entree photos on Yelp looked yummy. Elated wife all in for the drive and experience. Yi Xin pronunciation is "Yee Sin" or "Yee Shin." For those fluent in Mandarin, please enlighten me if I'm pronouncing the word incorrect or wrong. Tall, attractive female, one of the Owners welcomed and led us to the table near tank of live crabs. Menu consisted of family style dining and ala carte selections. Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Wings: Crispy, crunchy, flavorful, not oily, coated egg yolk amazingly complemented moist, cooked chicken wings. This would be my carb less meal and I would be perfectly content consuming all six pieces. Beef Chow Funn: Soft, succulent, tender, well marinated, thinly sliced beef married best, flavorful chow funn. The best and first chow funn I love! I'm not a big fan of chow funn because I've never found one that satisfied my palate until now. However, we're firm believers of Chinese ancestry that consuming noodles during Chinese New Year brings longevity. Curry Beef: A bit spicy, bold curry flavor enhanced soft, succulent, tender, well marinated, and thinly sliced beef, onions, and bell peppers. Shrimp Won Ton Egg Noodle In Soup: My son and I especially loved the steamed shrimp inside ground pork. This is the first moist, steamed shrimp that he enjoyed with the pork wrapped in won ton. Thin egg noodles are light, complemented choi sum, light and comforting broth. HK Style Iced Milk Tea w/ Frozen Bear: Beverage and frozen teddy bear is served with evaporated milk. My fave beverage! HK Style Iced Lemon Tea w/ Frozen Bear: Loved this beverage too. Non dairy option. Iced tea complemented sliced lemon. Drink and frozen teddy bear are made with iced tea. Aesthetically pleasing to the eyes. Creative concept. These are my fave beverages served in Mason glass jars with a handle. Used a metal serving spoon and soup spoon to break frozen ice. Each scoop reminded me of consuming slush. Our son was entertained and fascinated with prime view of live crabs in the tank. He expressed to us, "One of the crabs want to escape." Just climbed up on top of two for a couple of minutes and suddenly stopped. Top notch customer service. Three servers were very approachable, helpful, provided extra plates, extra bowl, extra utensils, water refills, and napkins. Male server was very kind to offer a plastic take out bag at no charge to carry our reusable bowl of beef curry and container of beef chow funn plus chicken wings. We loved our entrees and beverages. Free parking in Market City Shopping Center. Restroom for dine in patrons located inside the restaurant. Highly recommend arriving without res during non peak hours. A friend invited me to try this place out and it was on my list to visit this year. Yi Xin Cafe is located in Market City Shopping Center near Cafe Kaila. There were available seatings during lunch hour rush and they have restrooms in the restaurant so you don't need the code for the public Market City restroom. Salted egg chicken wings: The chicken wings were hot and crispy. The salted egg sauce was delicious. I wished there were more of the sauce on top of the wings. Curry beef stew: The beef was very tender and soft. It wasn't too chewy and has the right amount of fat and tendon. The curry was thick and rich. It has more coconut milk than we would like but it was still good. We couldn't finish the curry so we home the left over. The curry goes so well with a toasted baguette. I prefer bread over rice when it comes to curry. Singapore rice noodles: The rice noodles were delicious. It has the right amount of seasoning and curry flavor. HK style iced lemon tea with frozen bear: The lemon ice tea was good. It tasted like the Aloha Maid Ice Tea can but with more in depth flavor of lemon and ice tea. Super refreshing. The bear ice was cute and it was made with the ice tea. However it was huge and it takes a while for it to melt. HK style iced milk tea with frozen bear: The milk tea was not bad. The tea flavor was more stronger than other boba tea shops. Overall, great HK-style place. The foods were delicious. Will definitely return to try their recommended crab curry dish. Winding down on O'ahu for the 2023 holiday season and came here to catch up with a couple of old high school classmates, Kara & Sarah, who LOVE to eat as much as I do. I'm was super excited to see that HI finally has a small family run Hong Kong-nese restaurant that they can boast about. I put my full gluttonous trust into my friends and let them do all the ordering since they'd been here more than a handful of times between the two of them. Here are the dishes they dazzled me with: Curry Crab w/ Naan - curry is made from scratch, it's a nice and thick, super flavorful but not heavy on the curry curry-ness, which suited me well. There's a REALLY nice coconutty sweetness to it. I believe there were pieces of lemongrass in the sauce that added brightness and great aroma to the dish. The crab is separated from the shell and the body is chopped into pieces with the legs still attached. Everything is coated and flash fried, creating that great skin for the sauce to stick to. I love that they flash fry EVERYTHING and present it with the whole shell. We flipped the shell over, threw in some rice and curry sauce and gave it a good stir. For those that have no idea what I'm talking about, try it, you'll never ignore that shell again. Fried Green Beans w/ Minced Meat & Sambal Shrimp Paste - Ooo, their wok has been seasoned well! Good burnt wok flavor on the finished dish. The sambal fish paste mixture provided a good saltiness to the green beans. Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Wings - I love salted egg yolk everything. They don't state it but I'm curious if they use authentic duck eggs. The wings were fried well, no heavy batter, which I appreciate. Personally, I would have liked more of that salted yolk flavor. HK Style Lemon Tea w/ Frozen Teddy Bear - super cute, great kitsch for Yelp & IG photos! This was refreshing and by no means bad, however I'm used to a little more lemon flavor in my HK lemon tea. HK Style Iced Milk Tea - fantastically heavy on the tea. (It's a good thing in my book.) I think I'd like a little more condensed milk flavor. The restaurant is tucked into the inside corner or the building near (maybe next to) Cafe Kaila. The staff and owners are extremely nice and friendly. The food comes out quickly as the dishes are cooked. Looking at and perusing other peoples reviews, it looks like the menu has been evolving. They've definitely added a couple of different ways that they prepare the whole crabs and dishes I thought I'd like to try have been removed. In any case everything my friends choose was extremely satiating! The space isn't that big but looks like it might seat 50 ish people at once. As I'm sure you all know, parking typically SUCKS at Market City. There's usually a lot of cars coming and going but there's always a lot of other cars waiting for cars to come and go. We went to this restaurant after picking Jonathan up from school today. Pretty expensive but Oooh it was so good. We settled on garlic salt and pepper shrimp and their beef friend rice, and shared the lot bear iced milk tea- super cute btw. He had us take pictures of it. After Jonny's first bite of fried rice he was like "ITS SO GOOD! Mommy, they even made their cabbage taste good!" He ate half the plate of fried rice and a good portion of the shrimp. It means a lot when he serves himself. He had this big pile of shells and it looks like he sucked all the breading off of it. His face was a mess but his plate was super clean aside from the shells. Looking for a place to eat lunch at 1:45 was a bit challenging since most places close at 2;00 if they are even open on Sunday. Luckily my friend remembered Yi Xin which I hadn't revisited even though I loved it the first time. Today we repeated one dish and got to try other dishes we didn't get to last time. We loved that all the food came fresh and hot right out of kitchen without having to sit and wait to be delivered. 1)fried green beans- bummed it didn't come with the tiny shrimp I so loved last time, but still very flavorful with pork and black beans 2) Chef's special fried chicken wings with shrimp paste -crispy without too much batter on the outside, moist on the inside. So good! 3)baked meat sauce with spaghetti- Who would have guessed this would be on their menu right?! The sauce was brown and covered with melted cheese. We thought it wasn't bad but decided we prefer the tomatoey sauce that we're accustomed to. 4)shrimp wonton in soup- big dumplings stuffed with pork and a generous sized whole shrimp which is normally chopped up at other places. Broth was good. Served with a nice amount of Choy sum. We decided to have it without noodles. 5) Singapore shrimp cracker-huge light orange crackers different from the colorful styrofoam like "chips" you get with duck at Chinese restaurants. These were crispy and more wafer like. 6) Hong Kong style iced lemon tea-with frozen bear. So happy I finally got to try this! It is not only adorable but tastes good too! I thought it had just the right amount of sweetness (not too much) and lemon to complement the black tea. The bear stayed frozen for the entire meal and I finally dunked him in at the end. Neighborhood Gem, conveniently located at Market City in Kaimuki. Ample parking (although parking can be a challenge, it's a very busy strip mall and some of the stalls are very small.). Have been here about 7 times, everything we've had on their menu was awesome. Can get a little pricey, as most of their menu items are "family style dishes". That just means yummy leftovers the next day. The waitstaff is very attentive and knowledgeable of the menu items. The restaurant is nicely decorated, pleasing atmosphere. Tucked in the corner of Market City Shopping Center, Yi Xin Cafe was a place I've gone by many times and wondered what it was like. We did not have a reservation but we were easily seated at 5:30. After much pondering and seeing the specials, our group ordered the following; Beef Omelette Rice- 5/5. The price, taste, and size were all great on this dish. The egg and Beef are both not overcooked and there is plenty of flavor throughout. It is one of their recommended dishes and we see why. Honey Walnut Shrimp- 2/5. Plenty of places serverl Honey Walnut Shrimp and there are always differences in the batter, walnuts, or even the mayo. This one came with slightly stale tortilla chips and a very light mayo. We all agreed that it was not our favorite but we still ended up finishing it. Probably would not order again next time. Sizzling Beef /w Black Bean Sauce- 4/5. As all sizzling plates, this one was nice and sizzling. The Beef and the veggies were not overdone and well timed with the hot plate. It was quite good but, not the best we have tried on island. A good go to dish! Thai Style Beef Cheek- 4/5. Personally, I enjoyed this more than my eating mates. It was nice and tender with a thai- style marinade and dipping sauce with a little kick. The portion is also pretty good as we have some leftovers. Singapore Shrimp Cracker- 2/5. Our poor server thought we ordered this instead of the Honey Walnut Shrimp. Unlike other Shrimp chips that tend to stick to your tongue and absorb oil- these crackers crumble and have a very savory Shrimp taste. It was interesting to try but I personally enjoy normal Shrimp Chips better. The Lemon Tea /w Frozen Bear- 4/5. A vast majority of pictures of these guys are the reason we came here. They are really cute and the drinks are good with them. The two downsides are- you need to drink a little bit before you dunk them in otherwise it'll overflow. Also, in our 70ish minute dinner, the bears did not melt more than maybe a quarter. I tried to take a bite but they are pretty solid. All in all- these guys get all the instagram pictures. Long post summary- good dishes and great prices. There is lots of flavors and variety of dishes to try here that not every Chinese Restaurant has. Once, I saw those milk tea ice bears on Instagram, I had to try them out. Of course, I also wanted to try their asian fusion restaurant with Singaporean, Malaysian, and Thai food. We went on Sunday around 1:30pm, which wasn't busy suprisingly. The pot of lemon grass chicken, no thank you. Too much soy sauce, and way too many tiny chicken bones, I could barely taste the lemon grass. In all honesty, the best part of this meal was the beef chow funn + chicken wings. Both had authentic "wok-eh" flavors. #iykyk Everything else needed a little work...the tonkatsu was overcooked, the spaghetti sauce was too sweet for my liking, the won ton noodle soup was bland, the fries were crispy but the curry powder on top just wasn't doing it for me. And if you don't make reservations beforehand, find yourself some patience because you'll wait for at least a good 30-60 minutes, depending on what's going on in their shop. There's about 4 chairs lined up against the wall when you first get in to wait, and the list to put your name down is at the counter on the right. In the restaurant there's mainly 4-tops, so if you have a larger party, you need to wait a bit for some tables to clear for your group (we had 5 people that squished on top a 4-top and had someone sitting on the end cap). Place is very clean! Saw a YouTube video featuring this restaurant and my own personal experience TOTALLY lived up to the hype of all the food! Can't wait to go again and try some of the same things, but explore more new items as well. The Curry Crab was good; the flat bread that came with it went well with it; curry wasn't too spicy and it was nice and creamy--took home the leftover to pour over a rice dish. The salted egg yolk fried chicken--will order more next time. Chow Fun noodles with beef and sizzling beef was so delicious as well! Will be back for sure. And the Milk Tea with Teddy Bear was cute. I enjoyed the Lemonade Tea more since it was just the right amount of sweet and so refreshing to clean the palate between each dish! Service was great too! read more

Yi Xin is wild on weekends-located in Market City center with limited parking. Would recommend a slower weekday evening. Reservations unless you like to live on the edge. The restaurant has gone viral due to YT foodie spotlighting. The bear tea is cute but the bear is an ice cube, folks. Ok. It's a cute mascot and girls carry their teddy bears into the restaurant for kicks. Food was ok-mapo tofu watery with little flavor, bitter melon with beef could have had a bit more melon and a better grade of beef and tenderloin with black pepper was not bad but could have used less tenderizer. The touted duck egg chicken wings were interesting but not stellar...If you're going to be a hot restaurant- give us Chinese food that wows us. Of note:It's really loud when crowded - don't go on first anythings here. Can't talk. When we ordered a bear ice tea, it never arrived. So, we had to remind the server. read more

Went with another couple and finally got to try the curry crab. Delicious sauce but the crab is not pre-cracked and we would not get again because of the effort and mess involved in eating it. Honey walnut shrimp was fresh and delicious and we tried Hong Kong Pork Chop Tomato rice which I often make. Would get those dishes again and next time we will try the shrimp curry rice plates to get that delicious curry. Finally and my besties know... Having a Elite Event to see the Manoa Valley's Play Once Upon One Noddah Time at Kaimuki High School Auditorium and though this would be a great place to have dinner prior to the performance. Arriving early we had no problem with getting seated though Yi Xin Cafe is Hong Kong style dishes which includes spaghetti is something fun and different from the other usual dishes. Speaking of different I already knew my bestie would enjoy what I've been waiting for is the frozen bear drinks, and of course we both got it iced lemon tea for me iced milk, tea for her and as it arrived we both were just so excited how cute it was...cheers! As we took a bunch of pics of our cuties here comes our dinner Baked Meat Sauce Spaghetti for me and Tonkatsu Omelette on rice for her, as there are a lot of dishes with shrimp I'm delighted to find a bunch of dishes I'm still able to enjoy and being a tonkatsu lover my bestie just loved hers. Soft scrambled eggs of rice with a giant piece of tonkatsu drizzled in sauce was a heavenly dish that had her defeated not being able to finish it all. My spaghetti came baked and under all that cheesiness is a meat sauce that's a touch sweeter than I'm used to but it was a nice and saucy, the next time I could use some hot sauce maybe but I thoroughly enjoyed the dish. Where is that was at the front of the restaurant right beside the air conditioning vent so I was very cold as my friend didn't feel a thing. The ambience here is nice and casual. 4.5/5 This restaurant is pretty spacious and the interior is nice and open. The service here is quick and the staff is super friendly. We got to try most of their menu as we went as a large party. The Hong Kong Milk Tea w/ the Ice Bear was alright, definitely good for just the photo op. The Beef Omelette on Rice, Sizzling Beef, and Beef Flat Rice noodles were definitely the favorite. The wonton soup and chicken wings were alright. We also tried the baked spaghetti which was interesting. Would definitely return! read more
