There were about 6 or 7 different selections of sashimi, and the cuts were wonderful! Let me break it down for y'all: Ramen noodle soup: 4.5/5 To be totally honest, it's really competitive here in the Rockville-Gaithersburg area when it comes to noodles. The Chinese have their "guoqiaomixian", spicy noodles, and zhajiang noodles. The Japanese got their fair share of great ramens, and the Vietnamese are meticulous with their pho. Of course Yiku Sushi's noodles aren't the best in the area, but it was very good. It's price and presentation brings something that is not new, but has enough substance to challenge its competitors. Boyfriend and I wanted a light lunch and thought we'd try out this place. We were one of 2 people in here at 12 pm on a Saturday so service was very attentive and quick. We ordered a sashimi regular and a lunch combo of 2 rolls for $6.95 (we got spicy salmon and eel with avocado). The rolls were a good size with a decent amount of fish. I liked them. The sashimi were cut in some of the thickest slices we've ever seen! It was definitely a nice surprise. The sashimi seemed pretty fresh. All in all, it seems like a pretty good place for lunch. The rice they use has good texture, but lacks seasoning and flavor (a common failing), and thus doesn't contribute as much as it could. Our fav sushi place is closed on Tuesdays. What's a girl gotta do to get sushi? Venture out. Their Lunch Specials are very decently priced and reasonably portioned. The Teriyaki Beef Bento Box came with 3 large, well-rolled California rolls, a salad, rice, and the teriyaki meat of course; hubs said meat was a tad on the chewy side. The miso soup was hot but the seaweed and tofu tasted a tad too mushy/soft. The rolls were well-presented and taste was there. Some things I didn't quite enjoy about their rolls? The shrimp tempura rolls (while they use actual Japanese batter and the shrimp were decently sized) were on the oily side. The spicy tuna roll didn't look like one slice (as I'm used to); it was more diced up tuna mixed with spicy mix and rolled into the roll. The place is new, but was so clean. Kind of wish miso soup or salad was included with the sashimi deluxe, but we ordered two miso soups and a salad on the side and they were ok. It was a pleasant surprise to find a sushi restaurant that piqued my interest in the Rockville/Gaithersburg area. By no means is Yiku comparable to high end sushi joints that I reviewed. For the location, price, taste, and portion size, I think Yiku is a solid restaurant. The maki rolls are ~$4-$5 each and the specialty rolls are in the $8-$11 range. This is definitely on the lower price range in this area and the maki/rolls are ~25% bigger than most restaurants. To me, this is a great bargain given the taste of the rolls. I have also tried the Unagi-don (marinade eel with rice). The marinade on the eel was very well done. For $12.95 I don't think you can find a mid-level restaurant in the DC area that serves that quality in that price range. I highly recommend this dish at this restaurant and I will be visiting Yiku to satisfy my immediate cravings for eel. Recently, my visit to Yuraku was a massive disappointment and I have been having a very tough time finding a substitute. I think Yiku is a fantastic place to get decent rolls on a budget. read more

I ordered two specialty rolls: the white fish tempura and the OMG Maki (cali roll with baked scallops on top). The white fish tempura was the better of the two, in my opinion. Large chunk of fresh fish with crab stick and masago, deep fried and topped with a sweet sauce. Pretty good. The OMG Maki roll was okay, but I've had much better versions of this roll at other restaurants. The scallops were pretty good, but I didn't really like the california roll that was under it-- it was a little off and fishy tasting to me. It was one of those meals where I felt like it was okay when I was eating it, but as soon as I got home I didn't feel too good about what I ate. The service was pretty average. Austerely decorated fairly small venue, a dozen tables and 6 seats at the sushi bar. I ordered my usual chirashi. While it was being prepared, my green tea arrived in a mug with a bag tag hanging out. It turned out fairly decent after long steeping, but not worth the $1.99. The chirashi was served in a small bowl, with properly seasoned rice. The tomago was sweet but not caramelized. The shrimp had good flavor and texture. The surimi was as close to fit for human consumption as that industrial pseudo food gets, I just ate it because I was starving. The snapper,albacore, ahi, and yellowtail were served as single very large slices, requiring two bites. The salmon was in the usual smaller slices, average quality. The yellowtail and albacore were quite good, the snapper a bit chewy, and I think Jiro would have aged the tuna a couple of days longer. Not a great deal at $19,95, so I'll leave this one for the maki munchers. read more

The brown rice was warm, the fish was sour and it was slightly wet too! How nasty. Lastly, I got their Thai tea which was really really orange. Most Thai tea is pretty orange but this one was super orange. And, it was REALLY sweet. If ever a meal could earn no stars, this one would absolutely qualify. The restaurant was fairly busy, with seemingly happy customers - but we simply cant figure out how anyone would be happy here. The food was terrible and the service was sloooooooow, although friendly. Mistake #1 - Early on, we noted that the table next to us had left several pieces of sushi behind on their plate and assumed they had just over-ordered. Instead, we should have heeded this warning sign as we were about to follow in their footsteps. Mistake #2 - we ordered the chashu ramen. When we asked to add an egg to the ramen, they said they don't do eggs. We, again, ignored the warning sign and continued with our order. The "ramen" is really just noodles in broth with every vegetable they could find in their kitchen. Corn (despite the fact that we requested no corn), BROCCOLI, cabbage...you name it - it was in it. This lacked all the subtlety of flavor that ramen is known for. We also ordered a few simple sushi rolls. Each one worse than the last. California rolls are usually unmessupable, and yet...these were large and tasteless. The shrimp tempura was still warm, and not the least bit crunchy. And I have no words for the spicy crunchy tuna or the spicy salmon. Sad? Maybe that's the word. So, so sad. We ate a couple pieces of each, and left the rest behind - something we only do in the worst cases. Our search for halfway decent sushi in the area continues. It is, sadly, not found here. read more

All three had a huge chunk of fish and a good amount of avocado. They don't skimp on portions here. My philly roll also had avocado even though it wasn't advertised, and the pieces of eel were warm and very good. However, the ramen was a bit bland and didn't impress. Probably wouldn't order that again. The second time we came with a large group which was probably a mistake. They struggled to get our orders to us all at the same time and I waited about 10 minutes after my food was brought out for the rest of the table to be served. We had the chicken teriyaki bento box and (~$9) chirashi bowl. The chirashi bowl had a lot of fish on it, and there was also a lot of chicken teriyaki. The flavor was good but not spectacular. Also, we ordered the eel roll with cucumber and there were pieces of bone that you had to chew through this time. Not too appetizing. On a good note, we got 2 pieces of scallop nigiri (~$5) and that was very fresh and yummy. Overall, come here for the lunch special. I've lived in the area for a while but never tried this place until today. We came around 6 and the place was empty, but the food definitely did not disappoint. We ordered the Love At First Sight Maki, Playboy Maki, and Dynamite roll. The presentation of the Love At First Sight Maki made it adorable and the salmon, shrimp and crabmeat made it absolutely the best thing we ordered. We also got the Yaki Soba with beef, which was incredibly tender and the vegetables were cooked perfectly. Service was great and the wait staff was very attentive. We even got mango pudding at the end, on the house! It's only a bit more expensive than Yoyogis, but the menu selection is definitely worth it.
