I was not a fan of change fen ( rice noodle rolls) served in most Cantonese dim sum restaurants around here. I felt they were too greasy, the rice wrappers were too thick. They are not my childhood memories of chang fen. One day I walked by Yinji Berkeley. I saw several plaques on the wall, which indicate this is a famous old specialty restaurant chain from Guangzhou, China. This likely is the authentic one. They have other stores in the Bay Area and beyond. I decided to give it a try, and I am so glad I did. What I liked about them is their specialty rice noodle rolls AKA chang fen. They are famous for their thin super smooth transparent rice noodle wrappers, the tender, and delicious fillings. The menu is limited, simple, and straightforward. It has Cantonese-style porridges, change fen with choices of fillings such as chicken, pork, beef, shrimp, vegetarian or combinations. In addition to porridge AKA congee, there are also few noodle dishes and limited dim sum. I had marinated pork and shrimp chang fen, pork and preserved egg congee (porridge), and a Chinese donut stick. Chang fen was a pure delight! Light rice noodle rolls were filled with tender, tasty meat and shrimp, made to order. A lettuce leaf added an even more refreshing taste. The Chinese donut that usually accompanies the porridge, however, is an extra cost of $2.5, which I think is a bit more for what it is. They are hard to chew. It is used to soak in the porridge to add more flavor and texture to the intentionally bland porridge. Overall, I like the food. It is authentic, perfect for a light, quick comforting meal or snack that you can have any time of the day. Service was prompt and quick. Inside was clean and cafeteria-like. What I didn't like: the plastic utensils they served the food with. They are disposable to-go plastic ( not biodegradable) utensils. The spoon is so small and so flimsy. It is difficult to eat and enjoy hot porridge with it. The fork could hardly pick up the food. For the time being, I would order food to-go and enjoy it at home with proper eat-ware until they serve their food with a decent utensil. read more

Really enjoyed eating the shrimp chang fen fresh at the spot! I've been a couple times now and have been more recently ordering my rolls without the lettuce in the rolls. The rolls are just so thin, not super greasy, and I could control the amount of soy sauce to pour in. I've had it taken to go, but fresh in person (they have outdoor seating) was even better of course. Some hightlights: - Shrimp chang fen (no lettuce) - Pork and Preserved egg congee- could use a little more salt but great addition of scallions and cilantro - crispy donut chang fen- great contrast of textures - soy milk - not too sweet, and fresh tasting! Whenever I'm craving chinese food worthy of my grandma, I come here! The food satisfies cravings 10/10 and is super filling. We've been meaning to try this place out after seeing it on the delivery apps, and we finally were craving dim sum and picked out a couple things! Came here on a visit to NorCal while craving dim sum. It ended up being really good and all of the food felt like it just came out of the steamer. We were seated outside (let me warn that especially during COVID season, seats are extremely limited). We were told it would be a 30 min wait inside so we settled for outside seating which on the flip side is much more precautionary for the pandemic. We ordered quite a bit but by the end we were still itching for more. The rice noodle rolls were definitely the star of the show. They came out super soft and had great sauce. The other dishes were just as delectable and did not fail to impress. For future visits I recommend calling in to get a table or at least gauging the wait time! read more

Ordered take-out via DoorDash a few times from this place during the pandemic. Their rice rolls are great -- maybe it seems a little pricey compared to a hole-in-the-wall dim sum shop, but the rolls are actually a good size, and their quality is better (quality ingredients, not as greasy, no msg detected). We usually get the chicken & mushroom (sliced shitake) rice roll, and shrimp rice roll, and have also tried the beef, and dried shrimp one -- this latter one we were ok with, but the others were all tasty, with good amount of filling including some veggie leaves (wasn't really sure if they were lettuce leaves, or "A" vegetable leaves, haha), there's a good amount of shrimp & they are a good size, and the chicken/beef are so tender. We've also tried their chicken porridge, fish porridge, and pork & thousand-year-old egg porridge -- all were flavorful, with good texture, and no msg detected. Be aware that there is construction on the opposite side of Center so one of the lanes are closed and they have put signs that limit traffic flow through this part of the street. I prefer the pork to be grounded and smaller in my porridge so I don't have to chew as much. Chunks of egg were also large. You get plenty of pork and egg. I'm pretty surprised that Yin Ji Chang Feng is a chain, and even more surprised that an establishment with such poor food could have such a high rating on Yelp. I feel sad to write this review but it must be done for the sake of Yelp integrity. This is another example of what I call chinoiserie food - foods that are ultra-processed / machine-made Chinese-like foods but are an imitation and not the real thing. The reviews and menu photos made everything look delicious, but the quality and taste were unbelievably bad. We ordered: Two porridges - both were thin, watery, grey, tasteless with rubbery pork and yellowed cilantro garnish that should never have been served Cha Siu Bao and Nai Wong Bao - both were rubbery, machine-made, and previously frozen, with food coloring and tasted plasticky for lack of a better word One cheurng fun (Chang fen) - this was the most edible dish as the noodle was actually silky but the shrimp were not fresh; and were overcooked, tough and poor quality. Two coconut waters that were served in the original box. The box label was misleading, saying there are no artificial additives, all ingredients are natural, yet one sip tells you this doesn't taste right. The ingredient list shows sugar, and less than x% of preservatives, a processed casein (cow's milk), and other processed food additives. We didn't drink it beyond one sip. The staff all speak Mandarin as well as Cantonese. I hope this trend of passing off ultra-processed foods as authentic Chinese cuisine goes away for good. Authentic Chinese food is lovingly made by hand, following old traditions, is wonderfully delicious and does not taste like this. It may save time and improve profit margin to have everything premade by a machine, but quality, nutritional value and taste should never be sacrificed. I do not recommend eating here. I hope YJCF will reconsider their approach. YJCF has an amazing business concept - fresh cheurng fun (Cantonese) / Chang fen (Mandarin) made the old-fashioned way, served fresh alongside a classic selection of fresh rice congee, and a curated selection of dim sum. I liked that they included the Hong Kong version of cheurng fun - with hoisin sauce and sesame sweet sauce. In short, the best of Cantonese breakfast, made friendly for an American and international audience. If they executed their original vision with authentic food items and flavors their business chain would be ultra successful, and they would accurately represent the flavors and culture of Chinese cuisine. Ordered dim sum here hoping to satisfy a craving. It wasn't bad, but I got dim sum again two days later. We ordered online for pickup and service was quick. Price is a little higher for the portion sizes and food was okay. If I had to order just one it'd be the lotus leaf sticky rice, which was actually super flavorful. The siu mai was good, but didn't seem better than the kind of thing you could microwave at home. We also got the dried shrimp rice roll. It's a good place for an early type of dim sum. Most open later. I was a bit let down that it wasn't cart fare but it's pretty much the same foods you would find at a dim sum. Overall 8/10- it's a no frill, unpretentious rice noodle roll spot perfect for a quick meal just outside of UC Berkeley campus. Here's what I got: 1. Brisket rice noodle roll (牛腩肠粉): They got some lettuce rolled inside the rice noodle, topped it off with generous amount of brisket chunks, and finally poured some sauce over the whole thing. It was good! The rice noodle roll was soft yet chewy, the brisket was juicy and tender, the sauce was sweet savory soy sauce which married the whole thing together. The portion didn't look like much but it was actually enough to fill you up just as it is. 2. Shumai / Steamed Pork Dumplings (烧卖): I ordered this thinking that the rice noodle dish wouldn't be enough, but I honestly should haven't done it. This is a great place for a quick lunch or just even a snack! I grew up eating plain rice noodle rolls in dimsum restaurants cause that's usually the only veggie option, so I definitely appreciated a veggie one specifically! It was filled with lots of veggies and that sweet sweet soy sauce makes it perfect. My partner enjoyed his meaty orders and said the spare ribs and shiumai were okay. Specifically, I selected the rice noodle roll with dry shrimp and scallions. The price of $8.50 + tax + tip suggested that I was taking home a full lunch. There wasn't all that much to eat; I'm glad that I had some handy leftovers in my fridge. The Yelper who said that she could have eaten three rice noodle rolls is definitely someone I should follow. This restaurant is conveniently located across from the Residence Inn . Service was very good - waitress was very attentive. Ambiance was nice- seems to cater to students at Cal . Prices were very reasonable- Food was very tasty- I really enjoyed the rice noodle roll with Pork BBQ . This was my favorite! Its very light , so the roll is just a side dish . i recently came to visit my sister in berkeley who always raved about how amazing YJCF's food is, so we finally made plans to eat here for my first time. we had the pork and preserved egg congee, stuffed sticky rice, youtiao, shrimp + beef chang fen, and the hot soymilk. the congee, soymilk, and chang fen were good and tasted fresh. the sticky rice was okay, but it tasted like premade frozen one that you can get anywhere. they sounded very annoyed when speaking with us for some reason but sounded fine towards a different customer who came in. we also felt rushed as they tried to take our order when we barely sat down and opened the menu. service was average--they made rounds walking near us but never asked any customers if they need anything which was uncomfy bc it's like we were constantly being watched... my BIGGEST issue was when my sister signed the payment slip: the aunty there looked at it, and came back up to us with an attitude to tell us that we didn't leave a tip (my sister said it's not the first time this has happened). it also sounds like other people have experienced this from them. i've heard about places that demand tips or chase you out for one, but this is the very first time i've experienced it for myself. after telling them i was tipping in cash, they switched up and seemed kinder; kinda sad bc it's like we had to pay for some basic respect :( i wasn't feeling well especially after driving here from santa cruz, so i was excited for some comfort food, but while we were full, we also left disappointed. the food MIGHT be good enough for my sister to keep returning, but as a first-timer, i'm not sure if it's good enough to come back and be treated like that again. i probably would eventually, but that might be a while :/ read more

Generally, this place is a great place to eat especially if you're a student who wants to save a couple bucks on meals. Congee may not be for everyone, but the taste is quite exceptional. Flavorful and light, the pieces of fish are also soft and flaky. The cilantro adds a nice freshness to every bite. I wouldn't recommend the beef stew lo mein mainly because for the price, the portions are quite small and the taste is quite bland. Overall, if there's no meat to eat with the noodles, there's little to no flavor. The amount of leftover oil doesn't exactly satisfy my appetite either. I forgot to take pictures of the Chang Fen, but they're the establishments specialty dishes if you ask me. The rice wrap is decently thin and very "smooth." The texture is quite different from how most dim sum restaurants make and prepare them. I highly recommend it. Overall they had good service and great food. The food here is pretty classic and comforting, I always get the pork egg congee and sticky rice in the lotus leaf. I'm pretty sure the dim sum dishes like har gow sui mai and sticky rice are all ordered frozen and steamed, so most of them are subpar but the sticky rice is good regardless so I always order it. The dough stick was soft but crispy and had the perfect texture :) Their rice noodle rolls are fresh and made in house. Average service, nothing special but what u can expect from casual dining. One thing I don't like is that they're one of those Chinese places that will CHASE YOU DOWN for a tip :// Last time I dined in with my partner (at their old location) he paid and signed, but after we walked out, they literally ran out after us chasing us down, to ask (basically force) us to tick off a box and sign them a tip. Like at this point just make it a mandatory service fee, because tips are optional for a reason, we tip for good service. This time I went with my sister, and I paid but we wanted to leave a cash tip. The employee brought the bill back to me and kept asking to check off a tip box and that I forgot to tip, until I told her we were gonna leave cash. After that we still sat finishing up our food and it felt like they were watching us like a hawk until we left. You can get a standard carb-y bowl of wonton noodles, here, but I say go for their specialty rice noodle rolls, rice porridges and add a plate of their delicious Fried Milk Buns in for good measure. I was in Carb Heaven with every single one of thee dishes! ***SHRIMP RICE NOODLE ROLL ($6.25)*** WINNER! WINNER! I love me some good Cantonese rice noodle roll (aka"cheung fun" in Cantonese) and these were GREAT!!! These silky thin rice crepe-like wraps were stuffed with plenty of shrimp and greens. Greens aren't typically included in shrimp rice noodles, but I enjoyed this mix. The shrimps​ are marinated, but it wasn't noticeable to me. The rice noodle rolls are NOT made from a powder mix, which is often the case when you get these for cheap prices at "inexpensive" dim sum take out spots found all over San Francisco's Richmond and Sunset district dim sum delis. At the end of the day, you always get what you pay for. ***LIWAN CONGEE ($6.95)*** A solid rendition of a classic Chinese comfort dish. What I enjoyed about this was the combo of toppings. Although the BBQ pork was meh, I especially liked the fish stomach and the fine ribbons of egg. It was a bit of a let-down that presentation-wise, it didn't quite resemble the menu photo. I had to fish around at the bottom for the BBQ pork, which displayed prominently on the top of the menu photo. Towards the end, the porridge also became a bit watery. Nonetheless, I'd come back for this combo. ***Fried Milk Buns ($4.25)*** Who doesn't like deep-fried​ bread? Probably weirdo​s who don't like doughnuts. Yes, they're a bit greasy, but hey, these are deep-fried! I ordered these thinking, "I'll be good and just have one". Well, it's like saying, "I'll just have one potato chip". Impossible! I lost all willpower after just one bite! These buns came out warm with the outside ​ever so slightly crisp and the inside was deliciously light, soft and fluffy. You can see how this story ends...I ate ALL four of these. It comes with a sweet thick dipping sauce, but I happily ate these plain. Resto is clean and new. Service is ok. The food is what I'd return for. This is another branch from a chain based in Guangzhou, China, where thes ​rice noodle originated. I've visited Chinatowns all over the world​ and found these rice noodle rolls even a bit better than one of my favorite rice noodle roll spots in Flushing, NY's Chinatown. I was happy to get in on their whopping long-lived 2-day (sarcasm) grand opening offer of 20% off the entire menu. Honestly, I'd return even without the discount because I REALLY enjoyed the food. I liked the shrimp more than the beef, but both were delicious! Porridge with preserved duck egg and pork is yum! Not known for their pork dumplings, but it sufficed on the cravings. I recently came across this eatery that specializes in cheung fun (rice noodle roll)! I haven't seen too many places like this. In fact, one of my favorite meals in HK was a shop that served only rice noodle rolls made-to-order and had a menu of 30 different fillings, so I was excited to see what Yin Ji offered. We tried the basic shrimp roll, the BBQ pork roll and the donut roll. We also tried a pork and century egg congee and their har gow and sui mai. At first glance, we liked how translucent the rice noodle was. That's a good sign. We don't like it when the noodle roll is too thick and you get a few pieces of filling. Here, you don't have to worry about that. You can see all the fillings clearly through the noodle and they give you an ample amount. The jook tasted ok. We liked the amount of egg in it, but the slices of pork were too large and thick at times. The sui mai tasted good, but the shrimp dumpling wrapper was a bit took thick. But back to their specialty, I'd come back just to get my fill of rice noodle rolls. One odd thing. There were no plates or bowls given to you to eat your food. They actually give you to-go plastic containers to eat your food. The food itself is served on plates and bowls though. We liked that they have a few outdoor tables too. Their casiu baos and you tiao chang fen are the best!! Never had anything you tiao in chang fen before, and it was so delicious with the soy sauce. Would definitely get it again, and I didn't even think I was a huge fan of you tiao! The crunchiness on the outside was so good with the soft inside. The casiu bao is so flavorful and fluffy! Must get, it will change your life. The fish congee needed some soy sauce, but it was perfect for a cold day. The shrimp chang fen was also very good. Wanted some dim sum for dinner and came across this place on Yelp so we decided to try it. The rice rolls pictures looked amazing on the menu so we had to try some. We ended up ordering bbq pork with dried shrimp rice roll, shrimp rice roll, Shumai, Hargow, fried dough and pork organ congee. The rice rolls were both very flavorful, light and very soft. One of my favorite yet since it wasn't as thick as some dim sum places make them. The shrimp roll had decent amount of shrimp and they were all very good size. The shumai and Hargow wasn't great. It was just average. The fried dough was crispy and light, which was great since I hate sensed ones. The pork organ congee was great! I enjoy congee on the more soupy side rather than thick, so the texture to me was great. It wasn't bland but it wasn't very flavorful so we ended up adding some white pepper, chili and soy sauce. With some seasoning, it was great and the organs were perfectly cooked! Overall, I would recommend this place. Sometimes a bowl of lo mein 捞面 or cheung fun 肠粉 or porridge 粥 is all you need after a long day. My go-to restaurant in Berkeley anytime I wanted food that reminds me of home and China (after Famous Bao closed down). The prices are very fair. Yes, I'm definitely a fan of this restaurant. So far we have tried the one in Berkeley and LIvermore. Both serves delicious congee and dimsum. But I like the one in Livermore more since parking is much better there compared to Berkeley location. What we always order: 1. Shrimp Congee with Chinese Doughnut. Their congee is a bit runny texture, however, it's still delicious for us to eat during winter time! Congee is always a comfort food for us to warm our body. They also give fair portion of shrimps in one bowl of congee 2. Beef Congee with One Raw Egg. I know the raw egg can be intimidating for some people who are not used to eat raw egg, however, if you mix it with how porridge, the egg will cook by itself. So it will give the extra protein aside from the (cooked) beef that's already mixed with the congee. 3. Bbq pork bun. I love this dish! Especially if the pork is sweet and flavorful. So delicious to dip it with the congee. 4. Chicken feet. I know it can be gross from some people. It's like either you love it or you hate it. And if you love it, you will get more! 5. Shu Mai & Ha Gao. These two dimsum dishes are must order every single time we go dimsum. One indicator to know if Ha Gao is good is from their skin. If the skin is too thick, then they put too much rice flour, and you end up eating just flour mostly. If the skin is not too thick and it doesn't break easily, that's the best Ha Gao. Also the filling must be juicy and flavorful too. Will always go back to this chain. Most likely we will go to the one in either Milpitas or Livermore. If you're looking for a cheung fun (rice noodle roll) place you should check this place out, if you're looking for noodles then you're better off going somewhere else. Per usual, parking first! This place has their own parking lot in the back of the store which makes parking extremely convenient--not too hard to grab a spot. You could alternatively opt for street parking but depending upon the time of day that you choose to visit it could either be a little bit difficult or extremely difficult (the store is located quite literally next to a huge university). We visited around noon (11 ish) on a Saturday and we were seated quickly. Server was quick to respond and very friendly as well. Menu is expansive (had pictures which made visualization and choosing what to order so much easier) and although Rice Noodle Rolls are their specialty they also offer other items such as congee, dim sum, noodles, even milk tea! We got the Shrimp Rice Noodle Roll, the Beef Noodle Soup, the Wonton Noodle Soup, and their Fried Buns. Yi Ji Chang Fen gives mom and pop shop vibes, and has decent rice rolls but I wish they gave us real plates/bowls. I was surprised to see BBQ pork as an option for rice noodle rolls since I usually only see shrimp options! They give us a sauce for the rolls which paired really well.We sat outside to dine and were given a plastic to-go lid to use as a plate and two to-go small sauce bowls which was really odd to me since it was literally a plastic lid. We got the BBQ pork and rice roll, shu mai and BBQ buns. The rice roll was pretty good (8/10), the shu mai was alright (6/10) and the BBQ pork buns were a bit underwhelming because the bao itself was a bit dry (5/10). Service was good, made pretty quickly (only a 5min wait). I ordered the shrimp rice noodles, my favorite thing at any standard dim sum meal. The shrimp were nice and big, there was a pretty good portion of food. I subtracted a star because of the lettuce. I've only ever had cooked lettuce in desperate times (when they're about to go bad) and I throw them in a stir fry dish. Looking at the photos, I expected bok choy. The lettuce subtracted from the meal, even though everything else was good about the dish. I probably wouldn't get a rice roll again because of the lettuce, but I may get some congee if I were to come back.
