I went to this salon after hours, I was coming from upstate to the city and had a mix up with another salon. The owner ( I think) who was really cute and nice stayed late just to administer my Japenese straightening procedure which no one in the capital district does. I've been coming to Yo-C Salon for almost a year now and it's been great! I see Yoshi and he is wonderful. He was recommended to me by my former stylist in DC, and I have not been disappointed. I always get a cut and allover color, and it took Yoshi a couple of tries to get the color dark enough, but that often happens since my hair is so light naturally. After two times though he got it to the nice chocolate brown color that I prefer, and since then everything has been perfect. Also, I'm now trying to grow out my hair, and he is so understanding of that and only cuts off a quarter of an each time. Then he exclaims about how long it has gotten when I come in again! Everyone at the salon is so nice and friendly, and one of the assistants gives me a neck and shoulder massage each time they wash my hair! Amazing. As if the quality of the haircuts wasn't already great, that is a really nice added touch. I had a wonderful experience in the salon. I usually did my hair back in Taiwan but I'm desperately need someone to redo my highlights for my upcoming wedding. It is no time for mistake!! I scheduled a short visit with Yoshi san. He showed me the colors that he will helped me covered match with my old colors. He is very patient letting me know how he is going to do it. Also being frankly about the price and additional hair treatment and such. On the day, he helped me highlights all the hairs not the assistant!! I got my hair done at Yo-C for the first time last weekend. First of all, the salon is incredibly clean and orderly! I'm always wary of salons that are not kept in good condition. How can I expect someone to take care of my hair properly if they don't even sweep and dust? I was greeted by the owner, Yoshi, who was incredibly nice and friendly. He listened to my complicated request (I have unruly hair) and told me exactly everything he was going to do before asking for confirmation from me. I felt really comfortable and relieved to be putting the fate of the next 3 months of my appearance in his hands. Yoshi really took his time with my hair and made sure that I was completely satisfied with it before I left. He even gave me some really simple and effective styling tips! Oh, I must also give a shoutout to his wonderful assistant (whose name I didn't catch, unfortunately). She was very attentive - offered me something to drink and my pick of magazines to read! I just experienced one of the WORST hair cuts and colorings I've had in my life. This was the second time I'd gone to see Yo-C. The first time was about seven months back. In any case, the first time was a solid experience. Well, the second was an entirely different story. He basically didn't listen to a single thing I said -- the results speak for themselves. First off, I have a short cut to begin with (an assymetrical bob). I told him that my plan was to grow it out. Thus, he should try to take off as little length as possible. Well what did he do? .... He CHOPPED IT ALL OFF. Now I have something that looks like a cross between a mullet and Hillary Rodham's hair. Disgusting. The coloring .... I'm Asian, and I told him that I wanted to go brunette, but wanted to avoid any red or orange tones. What color did my hair turn out? BRIGHT, basketball orange. It looked fine inside the salon, but once I walked outside and looked in a mirror, it was terrifying. It is bright orange. How I am going to walk into court tomorrow, I have no freaking idea. I'm extremely pissed off by the results of both the cut and color. read more

After growing out my pin-straight hair for far too long, I called Yo-C for an appointment with Reiko (who had previously given me a solid $10 bang trim) and was booked for the same day. After my $50 Student Cut, I left feeling both sexy and hilarious (the latter being a direct result of my pocket-sized stylist laughing after everything I said--I can only assume she was laughing with, not at, me, but who knows?). I printed out a picture of a dull blonde celebrity and asked for her bangs (thereby embodying a "helpful hint" from Cosmopolitan magazine), but I got exactly what I wanted: choppy side bangs and lots of layers. I'm definitely a Yo-C fan now, as I like my stylists cute, my cuts sophisticated, and my prices moderate. Today was my first time going to Yo-C salon. My last hair cut was half a year ago and after extensive research on Yelp, I finally made an appointment with Yo-C salon for hair cut and color.I have really fine and flat straight hair so it's actually best to avoid too much layering. Yoshi was really nice and he listened to all my concerns with my hair. I know you will have to tip at the end but I wasn't sure how much I should tip. I asked the girl at cashier, she told me people would normally tip 20% of the total. The total of my hair cut and color ended up to be $230. The tips alone was $46. In total, I spent $276. Even though I like my cut and the hair color but I think the hair cut wasn't worth $110 because it really wasn't a fancy cut or anything. I feel like with the price, I can probably go for a higher end salon. read more

So a very sad but true story.... I found a hair dresser I LOVED LOVED LOVED in NYC named Yo-C who straightened my hair into a shiny glossy long silky mane of gorgeousness and then almost immediately I moved far far away to San Francisco. Where was I going to go get touch ups?!?!?! How could I ever trust anyone else to touch my hair!?!?! Would I ever be able to get the same results else where?!?!? What was I going to do?!?!? WAIT. and WAIT. and WAIT until I could finally return to NYC and see Yo-C again of course! Totally worth it. My hair is now shiny glossy gorgeousness and the world is right again. The end! Under the radar awesome. I first went to Yo-C salon over 3 years ago for a cut and hair dye with Reiko. I was going through my emo black-blue hair phase and thought it would be good to go to a Japanese salon, so that you know, they can make me have shiny Anime hair. Anyway, it was an enjoyable experience and all - massage, chat, etc - but when I left it started pouring ass outside and I couldn't really tell how nice the hair cut was (or wasn't). Fast forward to December 2012. I went back to Yo-C salon and had the good fortune to be with Reiko again. By this time, I had lived in London for 3 years and was a cold and hardened hair veteran - due to crap haircuts in London, horrible hard water that has damaged my hair, and general hair menace whilst being away. I was cynical. Was this going to look like every other Asian haircut I'd ever received? With layers up to there, bordering on a Cockatoo Mullet that Bon Jovi used to have? You know the one. We started with a conversation. I told her about my concerns about my round basketball-shaped head and getting the right hair cut to frame it, the dullness of it after years of hard water, my minor twinge of shame when I confessed I sometimes cut my own hair because I didn't want another crap stylist in London touching my hair. She listened, eyebrows furrowed in intense empathy and looked at my hair while nodding. She then went to work. She first dyed my hair (to even out my hair color and to slowly lose the blue-blackness of it - what can I say I couldn't help myself!) and did it gently and smoothly with semi-permanent. Hear that? Always go with semi-permanent to avoid hair damage. It was a quick and painless process - and she didn't leave any dye marks on my face, ears and neck. When she washed my hair, it was so soft I almost fell asleep - and her massaging finger tips were amazing. Further, once back in the chair, she set us up with some hot tea, and proceeded with a gentle neck massage... I'm such a sucker for those - but I know for a fact that can be a make or break for people, so ladies take heed... it was GOOD. But now to the hair cut. It was amazing. She took her time, really made sure everything was even. Listened to my requests - not too many layers, just enough to lighten the weight of it, soft shape in the back - and voila. I walked out with shiny, bouncy, healthy hair - and a little thank Travel Shampoo and Conditioner kit. The ultimate test was how it looked after washing - and I have to say, even after washing, the shape kept to what it looks like when it was in the salon. All in all, I'm a very happy girl with it. Tips for you, their next customer: Definitely ask for Reiko. Ask for any specials or offers before booking. If coloring, ask for semi-permanent. Ask for discounts for paying with cash. Ask for the hair magazines they have - they are great references. Ask some questions about hair maintenance - Reiko gave me some great tips on how to dry my hair and style it at home. read more

So here we go - 5 stars for the haircut but 3 stars for the Japanese Hair Straightening. I loved my haircut with Reiko but after I washed my hair (and yes, I waited the standard 2-3 days), it was not super straight (and I don't have curly hair at all to begin with). I have gotten my hair japanese straightened twice before at other places and really loved the effect - no frizz, no need to blowdry but this left me with kinda frizzy hair and my ends a little bent. I went back to ask and was told this is the new stuff where it doesn't make your hair super-straight. Really? That sucks. read more

I've only been here once & it was in April of 2009, but I absolutely loved the entire experience @Yoshi's salon. Totally got pampered & felt so good after leaving! Yoshi himself worked on my hair along w/help from the other stylist (I think her name was Reiko). I had the Japanese Straightening/Thermal Reconditioning treatment done (Most people think because I'm Asian I automatically have pin-straight hair, but this Asian does not & I've been getting this treatment done @Korean salons every 1.5-2 years since 2005). It was a little pricier than I usually pay @Korean salons in Flushing, but it was TOTALLY worth the extra cost for the service I got. They were both super nice & made me feel like a princess. I even got a nice little massage during the process, woohoo! :-) The salon itself is small, but very, very clean & very chic. I got a lot of great compliments about my hair from total strangers as well as friends (my best friend said she thought the Yo-C treatment came out better than the ones I had done earlier @Korean salons) & I raved about Yo-C to everyone. I referred my supervisor @work there & she loved it, too. Oh & having little discounts definitely were a nice plus! I usually get my haircut in Flushing, but I decided this time to go to a nice salon to get my hair done and chose Yo-C due to the great reviews on yelp. In the end, I got a decent cut but it was really just OK . My hairdresser was Yoshi, the owner. I requested for a cut that gave me more volume because I have fine, straight Asian hair - I probably should've been more specific and told him I wanted to have a more "edgy" look because he just added some more layers to the top part of my hair and the end result was kind of plain. I guess this guy is a conservative cutter, but TBH I was a bit let down. Everyone was nice, but the experience wasn't particularly special. I wasn't offered water at all during any point of my cut. The woman washed my hair and hardly gave me a scalp massage, which made me go "Really?" since even my budget hairdresser in Flushing gives me a longer massage than that. The actual haircut seemed also pretty abrupt. The cut and blow-out was finished in basically 20 mins. The finished look wasn't bad, but it really didn't look like I got a haircut. A plus here though is the student discount, which is $50. It is a very good price given the other Japanese salons in the area. I don't think me being given a student-rate cut was the cause of my experience because I only told the receptionist when I was about to pay. Decent cut and ok-experience, but based on the results, I'd rather go get a $18 cut in Flushing. Unfortunately, I will not be back because I'm sure I can find better given the many salons in LES/East Village and I'm fine paying more for a better cut and experience. read more

The last time I had a haircut and didn't regret it was the first time I got my hair cut at Yo-C. And that was only a few days before this review. I was mainly motivated to choose Yo-C because they offer a student discount. Yeah, the pricing is still pretty steep, but I can't be too picky about New York. I decided that if I wanted to go shoulder-length, a pretty tricky cut on my intractable Asian locks, I should probably get someone good, not an impatient barber who charges $6/cut yet doesn't speak my language and therefore cannot respect my suggestions (based on a true story). Yoshi, the director, cut my hair pretty late at 5 or so on a Sunday. Prior to my cut I had a soothing shampoo; the assistant even asked me what I would like to drink. I said I would like some tea, but Yoshi interjected that 5 was their coffee hour and that the shop would pay for my Starbucks. I was pleasantly surprised, but I guess that's just his classic Japanese hospitality, so I asked for a tall black coffee. I definitely have shown previous stylists specific pictures from three angles (front, side, back) of what I would want, but I did not bring printouts for Yoshi. He asked me many questions before getting to cut my hair, and while he probably has a preferred style, he was very respectful of what I wanted: minimal layers, one length, slightly past the collarbone. At first he didn't cut enough, but when I asked for half an inch shorter, he obliged. After drying and styling my hair, he asked me if I would like my hair thinned. In retrospect I should have said yes, but I'm not complaining about what I have now. Finally I can wear shoulder-length hair without having to straighten wild flippy layers every morning. The last star goes toward service. Overall, the assistants are attentive and even hang up coats near the waiting area, and Yoshi made friendly conversation. read more

He's a really pleasant guy and does GREAT cuts. I'm pretty low-maintenance when it comes to products. That is, I don't really use products because I'm either a) too tired or b) too lazy or c) too tired and lazy to do anything to/for my hair in the mornings. I went in to see Yoshi hoping that he could give me a decent style while I grew out my hair. Yoshi did me one better - he gave me a great cut and added some layers that took off a ton of weight in my hair. You know that glossy, flouncy hair that's featured in all the hair commercials? I came to Yoshi's salon because of the fabulous reviews here. I was not disappointed. Yoshi is AWESOME! My highlights are beautiful and perfect with my skin tone. I feel like it's finally summer. Yoshi does spend a good few minutes examining your hair - he really cares about the job he's doing. He brought out a book to make sure i knew what colors he was putting in. Furthermore, he suggested a leave - in conditioner for my ends. However, he is so polite - he didn't push the product at all, he just suggested it once and then at checkout I asked if he sold it. It is the best product ever, and I never use products. it makes my hair beachy, not greasy (i have thin hair this is why I never use products.) The salon is adorable, and they really gave me the royal treatment. I was in there for 2 hours alone on a Friday night and Yoshi and his 2 assitants were all waiting on me the whole time. Also Yoshi had his assistant give me a shoulder massage just because I enjoyed the head massage so much. To top it off, it's 20% off new client services, and very reasonable tpo begin with. My services came out to the following: $100 Highlights $30 Toner (my previous job was botched so he actually put toner in between all of the highlights to make it more 3D) $85 Cut & blow dry =$215 20% off $172+tax awesome!! worst experience so far in NYC. I had a very disappointing experience in this little japanese hair salon. The stylist who cut my hair was a young woman who had long hair- I don't remember her name, and she was a most awkward hair stylist I've ever experienced. She didn't seem understanding my guidelines, and I tried to make a conversation about hairstyle what I wanted and it was a almost one-way conversation. After all, my hair looked like a one that I got with 5 bucks spent in neighborhood salon in Korea. It was not something that you'd expect in mid-level salon spending over $50. Director of this salon might be better. But I don't think I'd wanna go back to this salon when I have tons of other options in five blocks away. read more
