Very average to below average and overpriced sushi. I found the crab mixture for their California rolls very off putting. Their spicy tuna roll and shrimp tempura roll were fine, but again, average at best. The two of us split those 3 rolls because we weren't super hungry and didn't want to spend the money on their premium rolls, so I can't comment on those. The service was good, and it was a comfortable and inviting place to have lunch. Our table was freezing and I don't know if that was the whole restaurant. In a city with lots of great food options, I wouldn't say this is one of them. read more

Ate dinner @ Shinsei Sushi restaurant located @ Cascade Village in Bend, Oregon. I ordered the Bento 3-items: spicy tuna roll, Teriyaki Chicken, and Chicken Katsu. My wife ordered the grilled salmon (two nice sized pieces). We were both surprised how plentiful the portions were but we did our best to finish our meals! The service and food were top notch. Location was easy to find and there was plenty of free parking in the parking lot. Atmosphere was comfortable and casual. We would certainly return. read more

Way overpriced and nothing great about the sushi. I ordered 4 rolls & 1 yakisoba. Total $90. spicy tuna roll was 3/4 or 75% cucumber spicy salmon roll was also 3/4 or 75% cucumber. I've been going to Shinsei for last 10 years or so and I must say on this most recent visit, it's really went downhill. The rolls are all 20 bucks (good ones) apiece and they were a lot less than fresh. The crab (with a C not K) was all dried out and kind of gross to be honest in the California roll. Great meal and good service! The ramen bowl was so large it could feed two people. I had the Spicy Salmon roll and it was so fresh. It was also fast service. I thought the Sushi was better than average. The ambiance is nice and they have good wine. With Ramen a Salmon roll and glass of wine the bill was only $43 which I think is reasonable. read more

This is probably the worst Japanese food I ever had. There is about an inch of rice on the sushi rolls(see photos), apparently this restaurant doesn't know how to make sushi, Sushi rolls should only have a thin layer of sushi rice, the worst part is they are absolutely no flavor, we ordered tempura and they taste pretty weird, definitely did not use tempura batter which is made of Rice flour, these are just drenched in baking flour and called in Tempura. Save your money and just buy grocery made sushi if you are planning to come here, The service is great and the ambiance is not bad. Food is awful! read more

Sushi is decent. Service is decent. Ambiance is decent. Every time I've gone it just feels like the restaurant needs to be cleaned. One thing that bothers me so much is when I sit down at a table and it's sticky, floor around the table is dirty. Just not appealing. I have only been here once but that was enough to leave an impression. The restaurant was clean, organized and peaceful. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. In authentic Sushi restaurants I expect language barriers and some cultural differences which I welcome as part of the experience, this was not the case here which is not a good or bad thing. It is a more Americanized restaurant with very good sushi. The food was very good, I recommend the jalapeño appetizer as it is not too spicy but does explode with flavor. My only issue (an extremely small on) here was the menu, it has short hand for some of the ingredients which can be found on the bottom of the menu, or in the photo i have supplied. I don't know if the rest of the reviewers just don't know what sushi is supposed to taste like or if they were paid to leave these reviews because this was by far the worst sushi I've ever had. Neither me or my partner were able to finish any of our rolls that had crab filling, both real and imitation. The taste and texture were extremely off putting and I actually gagged from one of the rolls. I'm not a sushi snob by any means but this sushi was just horrendous. My husband and I love Shinsei Sushi. We stop in whenever we're at the mall. Great selection of creative rolls and beautiful nigiri sushi at reasonable prices. The servers are all pleasant, courteous and professional. The restaurant and facilities are clean and comfortable with lots of natural light through the picture windows. read more

The sushi here was delicious. It seems a couple of the limited sushi places in Bend are closed on Mondays. We were happy to find they were open. The service was friendly and quick. They have you check off the sushi rolls you want with a dry erase marker. It made the ordering very simple. The sushi was delicious! However the amount given for each roll was about half a roll. My boyfriend and I have been here on two dates and have loved everything we have tried, from the crab stuffed jalapeños, to every traditional and crispy roll we have tried, down to the sake. March 2024 review. Twice before 2024 I ate there and was it was ok although ordering prime rib for the main protein in bento box was a mistake, never good to order PR recooked and this proved why. So I learned. This time I ordered chicken katso that was too dry. The sushi rolls were below average and the miso soup not hot enough. Waitress was tops, however, bus male clearly fresh off the boat, brought me a glass of water by placing off of his fingers firmly around the rim. Told waitress the water was unacceptable & she said it would be replaced and the busser would be given education. To me, the place has gone downhill with the owners not taking notice or nor caring. Shinsei was recommended to us by friends who knew the owner so we came here for lunch today. The lady that sat us was nice and friendly. It was not crowded yet when we got there. We were seated at the table by the wall heading to the restroom which I found out later because of the traffic. Wasn't too happy but I didn't complain. Our server was a little off although she tried to be nice. We ordered the Sushi Combo D which included 7 nigiri and a choice of sushi roll. Since my kiddo only likes salmon, I asked if we could just do 7 pieces of salmon nigiri. She answers yes but there is an up charge. When I asked how much, she says $4 because the fish is expensive. I didn't care WHY, I just wanted to know how much. 7 salmon nigiri and a spicy tuna roll is what we ended up getting. Food wise, I was surprised how fresh the salmon was and how generous they are with their slices. The ratio of fish to rice was so off, it's like eating sashimi. I'm not complaining but my nigiri loving kiddo didn't appreciate it. The sushi rice was so crumbly it was falling apart before you could even pick it up. The tuna roll although good and fresh wasn't spicy at all. I have to say though that so far, they have the best sushi in Bend. We found out later from the nice lady that a server called in sick so they are understaffed. Still, that does not excuse the other server's attitude. It wasn't our fault you're understaffed so don't take it on your diners. All in all, liked the food, the service not as much. Might give them another try one if these days. read more

Worst tonkotsu ramen ever, which was very disappointing as we desperately need good ramen in this town. Mediocre broth, not remotely spicy even though ordered that way, green and red bell peppers don't work, broccoli doesn't work, canned sliced mushrooms! Fried instead of soft boiled egg. No nori. Terrible ramen. Tan tan ramen (off the special menu) was also very bland. The description says spicy but it's about as picante as milk. Nigiri sushi is good, however. You get two per order and they don't skimp on the fish, which seems high quality. Good sake list. Good beer list. Good service. Restaurant is nice, not loud. read more

Went for dinner on a week night. I was impressed with the quality of the sushi. The Red Dragon roll was delicious and had sizable portions of fish. I was didn't enjoy the four veggie roll, and will be opting for another fish roll next time. The ramen was so good, even my picky kid devoured it! read more

My colleague and I both love sushi, and since she doesn't have many people who will go with her, we decided to come here for lunch one day. Ended up getting a couple of mussel apps, 4-5 rolls, and a tea/soda, and the bill (pre-tax) was about $100...meaning that this is not a place to go to if you're looking for a cheap meal. Not sure if all you can eat sushi places are a thing around here, but I usually go to only AYCE for sushi in So Cal. In any case, the rolls were pretty darn good..with the exception of the scallops. My colleague and I both had some, and we thought the taste was completely off. I had to spit out what I ate, because I couldn't stomach it, and we left the rest of it completely untouched. It was that bad. Dry, tasteless sushi served with rice which just isn't right. To add insult, the menu I ordered from turned out to be the lunch menu. Consequently my overpriced Combo D sushi wasn't just $25.95 but $31.95 instead. The waiter apologized and said "we'll make it up to you next time bud." So I was treated to a miserable meal for $37 and a future promise of maybe something? Yuck, sorry correct that "very yucky" in every sense of the phrase. A lousy experience all around. This is not a bad place to eat by any stretch of the imagination, I certainly would not avoid going here again but as far as sushi goes it wouldn't be my first spot to pick in town. The ambience of the restaurant is relaxed yet upscale, the staff are all dressed sharply and are for the most part, pretty friendly. Having dined here on three occasions, I can say that one of them was a very good one was so-so and one wasn't that great. I would deathly give us 3 1/2 stars if I could. Again, this is not a bad place to eat and I feel bad that I'm only able to choose three stars as I do believe it deserves better than that. For the price, I can get a lot more at other places in town that has a little higher batting average for me. read more

This is an honest and fair Japanese restaurant here in Bend. Everyone at Shinsei have always been friendly and the food and sushi constantly very good. Happy hour is Monday to Thursday and they offer a nice selection but get there early as it fills up quickly around 5pm. Weekends can be busy but getting there around 4:30 pm is great and in good weather they have nice seating outside. read more

Anyone old enough to know what I mean when I say this may be the "Howard Cosell" of sushi places in Bend. For those younger ones reading this, you either love it or hate it! As is repeated often, the service is S. L. O. W. I would think the owners would be aware of this by now and train the underworked staff to be more attentive. We like the sushi. Tonight we went very early as we had another engagement. The Happy Hour menu is great. We shared 3 really nice rolls, edamame, miso soup and beers -under $50. We live on the NE side so this is closest for us. Not sure it's worth the trip if ones lives in Bend proper. I'll be trying all the options downtown soon, but leave the door open for this nice place. read more
