    Bento Box (3-items)

Ate dinner @ Shinsei Sushi restaurant located @ Cascade Village in Bend, Oregon. I ordered the Bento 3-items: spicy tuna roll, Teriyaki Chicken, and Chicken Katsu. My wife ordered the grilled salmon (two nice sized pieces). We were both surprised how plentiful the portions were but we did our best to finish our meals! The service and food were top notch. Location was easy to find and there was plenty of free parking in the parking lot. Atmosphere was comfortable and casual. We would certainly return.

Spicy Salmon and Korean ramen bowl.

Great meal and good service! The ramen bowl was so large it could feed two people. I had the Spicy Salmon roll and it was so fresh. It was also fast service. I thought the Sushi was better than average. The ambiance is nice and they have good wine. With Ramen a Salmon roll and glass of wine the bill was only $43 which I think is reasonable.

This is probably the worst Japanese food I ever had. There is about an inch of rice on the sushi rolls(see photos), apparently this restaurant doesn't know how to make sushi, Sushi rolls should only have a thin layer of sushi rice, the worst part is they are absolutely no flavor, we ordered tempura and they taste pretty weird, definitely did not use tempura batter which is made of Rice flour, these are just drenched in baking flour and called in Tempura. Save your money and just buy grocery made sushi if you are planning to come here, The service is great and the ambiance is not bad. Food is awful!

I have only been here once but that was enough to leave an impression. The restaurant was clean, organized and peaceful. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. In authentic Sushi restaurants I expect language barriers and some cultural differences which I welcome as part of the experience, this was not the case here which is not a good or bad thing. It is a more Americanized restaurant with very good sushi. The food was very good, I recommend the jalapeño appetizer as it is not too spicy but does explode with flavor. My only issue (an extremely small on) here was the menu, it has short hand for some of the ingredients which can be found on the bottom of the menu, or in the photo i have supplied. My wife and I will be returning, hopefully soon.

Excellent food and sushi. The service was on point. Tough for me to grade the ambiance, being I came in for an early Monday lunch.

It got busy with a packed front part of the shop with multiple people. Food: I ordered the wild salmon bento. It was a little on the fishy side. That is my only comment. The macaroni salad and the cucumber salad was good. The chicken Katsu was pretty good in my opinion. I do miss my bentos I would get when I ride the Shinkansen. Ambiance: small, cute, clean shop. I liked it. I feel there are limited ingredients in Central Oregon. This is pretty good for what we get in Central Oregon. I am happy that there is a small Japanese community in Bend. I can't wait to join it!

However, LA is competitive so it…read moreisn't fair and mainly rating it accordingly to the area and palates of a much less asian community. So if comparing on Oregon alone, giving it a 4. In general alone without comparisons: - chicken teriyaki flavors and sauce was perfect and not overwhelming BUT it was very charred. Loads of scattered chars on chicken which spread throughout rice made it difficult to eat without having the thought of eating a bowl of high cancer risk. (See pic. All the black areas, sauce and rice had specks scattered like pepper all over but is char). Unless you love a great char bbq flavor, then this is for you. Again, had it not been so overly charred, I actually really liked this. - the gyudon bowl was good. No char here. Descent portion and meat to rice ratios (same as the chicken). One thing i like is they used lean beef instead of the traditional fatty beef belly short plate type slices. Easier for me so I don't have to pick out the fat strips. Flavor is not bad but this compared to chicken teriyaki sauce is much stronger. More saltier and sweet than what im used to. I actually prefer the juices from yoshinoya instead which seems more brothy. In addition, unsure if its my taste buds but if i taste it correctly, it was missing dashi base. Although i also feel its catering to local taste buds and preferences which I could completely understand: so if you prefer more flavors (salty and sweet) and less or no dashi flavors then this is for you. - We also got spam musubi (this is quite generic and cant really go wrong). So this is definitely a safe one to get. Service: there were a skeleton crew of 3. They were all super nice and sweet. I can tell they take a lot of pride and care in making your food. They made our chicken to order, as I saw one lady literally just cutting strips of chicken to cook. So I will also add that it took awhile to get our food. So if you are coming hungry, expect a wait and be patient as they are a small crew especially during busy rush hrs. Or call in your order ahead of time. Ambience: like many Japanese establishments, they are usually small. Just a long table along each side of a long hallway. However, there are sooo many nice parks and malls around that we took it to go and did a small picnic nearby. It was amazing. Cost: definitely much more costly than LA. Oregon doesn't have sales tax but exchanged with the spiked price tags (more tourists vibe prices).

Our food and drinks also came in a timing manner. I really appreciated that we could see all the way back into the kitchen and there was transparency between the kitchen and the consumers. The bar looked gorgeous and I would definetly like to sit there next time for the vibes. I also loved that they provided self-serve boxes, napkins, and utensils but still had a sign asking patrons to be concious of how much they're using. I tried the Chicken Paitan Ramen. Very good, not to spicy, Chicken was tender, the sprouts and bamboo shoots worked well together. Another good thing was the portion size. I took half of it with me. Overall a very good experience. The vibe was very cool. It was the standard, eclectic Bend vibe. I liked they happened to be playing 70's disco, Motown music. However, the place is kinda small so I wouldn't recommend for groups bigger than 6 imo. Parking: we came on a Tuesday afternoon and there was plenty of parking in the plaza to the right of the restaurant. My only concern for this place was that I saw one of the servers switching between taking orders at the register and preparing food with her bare hands without washing her hands in between nor wearing gloves during food preparation so that was a bit concerning for me.
