With covid being as big as it is you'd think an establishment would have a better upkeep. There was a cleaner, older guy, who was in charge of clearing the tables, who continues to scratch his scalp (bald spot). Due to the open design of the restaurant you could clearly see he didn't wash his hands afterwards, jst wiped them on a dingy rag. He also was the one who brought out the glass pitchers and cups to our table. Very disgusting. I was immediately turned off. Our waiter focused too much on up selling us than getting my order right. So this location used to be Grandma Sally's and every now and then I would come here for breakfast sometime ago. For what I learned Grandma Sally's was the mother and she had retired from the restaurant business doing breakfast and lunch. Her son had purchased the restaurant and called it yolk. There's even two or three other locations so I assumed that the sun is doing good and expanded the business after her mom retired from Grandma Sally's and only having this location for such a long time. Anyways I'm glad that the sun still has the menu where their signature sausage is what I like about them that no other breakfast place can make it it's a big sausage. I had ordered a special with French toast one strip of bacon and originally it was two eggs and two sausages but I love their sausage so much I ordered an extra and an extra egg and I had it sunny side up I usually order scrambled. Anyways I am very happy and satisfied that they were open and despite that I thought it was a different owner it was actually just transferred from relative and they changed the name.do come to this location I don't know if I'll try the Chicago location due to the parking in the one in Chicago avenue but this is a very good place especially do try their delicious chunky sausage. for breakfast they're French toast is also delicious as well. read more

Food and ambience at Yolk was great. We were here for a celebratory brunch and enjoyed our time. All the entrees tasted good. The only complaint was that the tables are too close and there was an extra chatty group next to us which was disturbing. My friends and I came into this restaurant today and were extremely disappointed. The first problem we ran into was when I received my food. I ordered the cinnamon french toast and I wasn't impressed with the quality of my meal, but then I found a hair in my food. Safe to say I lost my entire appetite and didn't order again. Though I can say that our waitress was kind and accommodating to our larger group, and she is the only reason this review gets an extra star. At the end when my friend got her check she tried to pay with apple pay through the qr code. Our waitress then informs us after many attempts on our end to fix the problem that we cannot leave because the restaurant did not receive payment, even though it was confirmed on her end. As someone who has been a returning customer over the past decade, I can confidently say this establishment has gone downhill since the rebranding to yolk. The food here was pretty good and service was good up until we paid. Now, you are not required to tip anyone anywhere. Yes, it is something that is pretty standard and I always tip based off service I receive. After I paid cash and left a $15 tip the server comes up to my group (4 people) complaining that we are supposed to leave 20% tip because she has to tip out bussers. Excuse me? I don't have to tip at all if I want to. I don't know how tipping out works here but I left $15 and you come up to me demanding more. So unprofessional ! read more

This is my second time coming here and overall it was a good experience. Personally I prefer their sweet dishes over the savories. The savory dishes don't have as much taste as I want them to have and the seasoned potatoes are a little too soft for me. I've ordered from here several times because I wanted to give it a chance, as it's a local business, but I've been at least slightly disappointed each time. As a note, the in-house service is good, so this review is solely based off of food. In my final and most recent visit, I tried the avocado toast, and the smoked salmon had a strong 'fishy' smell/taste (generally a sign of improper handling or lack of freshness) and was very mushy. As for the other items I've tried here prior (BLTSMA, Countryside Skillet) they weren't particularly bad, but definitely not cause for excitement. I haven't tried their sweet options and don't plan to, so l cannot speak on their quality, but in terms of savory, this Yolk location is ok at best. If you're looking for a more consistent breakfast spot in the area, maybe try Madison Park Kitchen or Cozy Corner instead. read more

According to the hostess/employee that answered my call, their location does not know how to work with online apps. First time patron. I used come here when it was Grandma Sally's and was always satisfied. My favorite was egg sausage combo with choice of pancakes where I could get crepes on the side. So for my first order a the Yolk I chose Walfle Benedict with ham . Sounded wonderful and would have been if they hadn't undercooked the walfle. If your going to put ham. eggs and a sauce over a walfle it should be crispy. I mean extra crispy not mushy and barely cooked. I thought your establishment had a test kitchen. When a walfled sticks to the roof of your mouth, that's not a good sign. You need to try harder. read more

Went on a Sunday morning at 9 as a party of 4. Virtually empty restaurant and the hostess tried to seat us in center of the restaurant directly in the path of the servers accessing the kitchen. Nobody else was placed at that table all the time we were there. We asked to be moved and were begrudgingly accommodated. Restaurant remained less than 1/3 occupied. Sourdough bread wasn't, but served white bread without apology. My wife asked for extra cheese on her scramble, even the waitress questioned the kitchen if it was there. Food cold when served. I had lunch with my daughter yesterday at this location. After receiving our food my daughter is sitting accross from me. As I'm watching her enjoy her food a HUGE Cocaroach came passing her on the wall. I slowly got up asked my daughter just to move my way as I grabbed her coat from the seat. She looked over saw it and screamed!. I didn't want to make a big deal. A bus boy came and saw roach and grabbed it with my napkin. Doesn't compare to the restaurant it replaced! first time eating at yolk. Wait was reasonable given it was a Saturday morning. Our waitress was friendly and pleasant. i ordered the El Torero Scrambler. Which the waitress said was a very popular order that day. Somehow in my mind i thought that was a skillet lol so i was very surprised when i saw my food. That scrambler was the most unattractive looking food i ever seen. That's why i didn't take a picture lol. It reminded me of green eggs and ham .. the scrambler was green.. likely from the avocado. The scrambler was supposed to have chorizo in it and i didn't taste any at all is was very bland. For a side i order the cheese grits. Now they should know not make any restaurant grits with water... so it wasn't creamy at all. The pancakes ... i don't even know how to explain them but they were dense and seemed old. now the price was a bit expensive for breakfast. it's was a lot of food but i left a lot of it there.... i would go back , probably will try a different location and definitely not eat that meal again. read more

Hello Foodzies, yesterday we had breakfast at Yolk at 7301 w North Ave in River Forest. This is where Grandma Sally used to be. Yolk opened here in February. They charge the interior to be more of an open concept. It is nice and clean and had a comfortable atmosphere. Our server Joe was very upbeat, friendly and knowledgeable. Glenda went with the Yolk all star combo consisting of 2 eggs, 4 turkey sausage and 2 crepes. Eggs were nicely cooked, turkey sausage had a nice spice to it and the crepes (a little too dense for me) were prepared well. I went with the California omelet made with mushrooms, onions, tomato, garlic and Swiss cheese. That was blended with smashed avocado which gave it great flavor. The omelet was a little loose for me a couple more minutes would have firmed it up perfectly. This was accompanied by sautéed potatoes which could have used a little more seasoning. All in all we had a nice meal. We will definitely return. I give this restaurant 4 stars. Try it out and let me know what you think. Ciao Ciao for now. read more
