    Nigiri lunch special
    Jill W.

Cozy, calm space where beautiful food is served by a helpful and courteous team. Everything we tried was simply delicious. Different than other sushi spots we've tried: there was no dollop of wasabi on the plate and there was a ginger sauce with texture similar to a salad dressing (it was very good).

Ordered their aburi oshi and every bite was divine! It is a bit on the pricey side as well, but well worth it! Great service and waiter was really great about coming by to fill our tea (which was superb green tea!). Would recommend if you're looking for good aburi

Restaurant Yugo is an upscale Japanese French fusion restaurant that serves premium quality sushi as well as some less common, sophisticated offerings such as Foie Gras Donburi. I ordered some sushi for takeout from them recently. Featured here: Hamachi Nigiri Sockeye Salmon Nigiri Gluten Free Avocado Oshi Sushi Not the most exotic ingredients as Hamachi, Sockeye Salmon, and Avocado are all ingredients that you can find in pretty much any Japanese restaurant. The difference however is in how the ingredients were prepared. Restaurant elevated these ingredients to another level. Most other restaurants use more rice for their nigiri and the fish lies flat on top of the rice. I love how the salmon and hamachi draped over the rice, with some extra fish hanging over the sides of the rice. The Avocado Oshi sushi was also sublime. Confit Tomato Sauce and Lemon Zest were brilliant additions which made the flavours pop in our mouths. My picky eater who usually just loves to eat a standard Avocado roll was most delighted with this new version of Avocado sushi! Open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner which is another plus for me because at the time that I ordered from this place, I'd been struggling to find a good sushi restaurant where I could order for lunch on a Sunday! Service: Good Parking: Free parking on the side streets Location: 4265 Main St., Vancouver

Ambience: It's cozy and nice, good for a corporate lunch or a comfy date night. Higher scale than a regular sushi joint but not bougie or fancy. Food: Regular Miso Soup - Had mushrooms and they were generous with tofu pieces. 9/10 Salmon Aburi - Comes with 6 pieces, not at all disappointing. 8/10 Mongo Ika Karaage - Star dish! Must order. The squid is lightly battered, fresh and just the right texture. A decent sized portion as well. 10/10 Lobster Rissotto - Maybe I'm not a rissotto person but this can be missed. Too rich, needs some acid to cut it down but it's a decently prized dish. 6/10. We also ordered the Uni Pasta but unfortunately the server forgot to put the order in. Blessing in disguise though because we were quite stuffed by this time. Service: They were damn fast, the soup, salmon Aburi and karaage came within 4-5 mins. Value for money: decently priced for a good date. Our bill for two was $75 without tip.

House Bento and Aburi & Sashimi combo
    Cecilia M.

I've heard good things about Yugo so decided to order take out delivery this past Friday. Ordered the House Bento and the Aburi & Sashimi combo. I loved the variety of the House Bento as it is unlike what us offered at other Japanese joints. The chicken karage was cooked perfectly - light in batter and not oily. The tamago was also well done and I really enjoyed the spinach gomae. The salmon aburi nigri was also quite good. The largest portion of the Bento box was grilled salmon with rice and sadly, the salmon was overcooked and a bit dry - this was quite disappointing. The Brussel sprouts still had great crunch to it, which I appreciate. The Aburi and sashimi combo was solid and of pretty decent price point at $25. Sashimi was of decent quality and the salmon aburi, as mentioned above, was tasty. Hopefully the dine-in experience at Yugo is better as the prices are a little higher than your average Japanese restaurant. May need to go check it out in-person to do a follow-up review.

    double tiger shrimp aburi

Came here for New Year's Eve dinner as we wanted something good, but not a set menu like other places. We ordered 1) scallop ceviche 2) albacore tuna aburi oshi sushi 3) le motown roll (spicy tuna tartar, tiger shrimp tempura, avocado, tobiko, green onions rolled with soy paper) 4) double tiger shrimp aburi oshi sushi 5) Haru special roll (salmon, albacore, white fish, tobiko rolled in cucumber) 6) Mongo ika karaage (fried squid, onion rings and truffle mayo) 7) tontoro (pork neck with pepper just, scallions and spicy yuzu) So damn good. The haru roll was better if you ate the inside without the cucumber sheet as the cucumber altered the taste a little. We liked the albacore tuna aburi roll, mongo ika karaage and le motown the most as the flavor blended well for each one. The service was great. The servers were walking around the restaurant, asking if people needed anything like tea, more soy sauce, etc.

Stumbled upon this restaurant for Friday night dinner. The interior is simplistic but classy. The ambiance was nice and there was also a sushi bar. The restaurant wasn't particularly busy so we were seated right away. We ordered only a few items to start but weren't particularly impressed by the quality. What we ordered: Sockeye salmon sashimi ($10/3 pieces) Salmon aburi ($16) - it was good but nothing special. The flavours were not especially distinct and the presentation could be improved. The torching was uneven as well. Chicken karaage ($13) - the portion size of the karaage was quite generous. The batter was not oily and the chicken was cooked well. The service was rather attentive and they had great tea. Overall, it was an alright experience. You'd probably need to order 4-5 plates for a comfortable 2 person dinner.

Tasty spot for amazing Japanese food. Love the decor and cozy vibes. Enjoyed the aburi sushi as well as the uni pasta. Service was prompt and friendly.

Premium nigiri selection (left to right; squid, hamachi yellowtail, hotate scallop, skipjack, maguro, king salmon)

Decided to finally try the long awaited Restaurant Yugo after seeing it many many times on my Instagram story. Bf and I came in the Sunday before V-Day and all the parties dining were tables of 2 haha. The menu is quite comprehensive, there is a variety of appetizers, sashimi, sushi, and main dishes. We decided to keep it simple and ordered just the items that really caught our eye. Appetizer Sashimi - This is a selection of salmon, albacore tuna, and hamachi yellowtail with a light sauce over top and garnish. Tasty, good quality fish, sauce was okay (I felt like it lacked more sweet/sour punch) but nothing super special. $20 for 8 pieces though is pretty sweet. Foie Gras Don - Bf is sucker for foie gras so this was a must order. As he ate most of it, he pointed out the nicely sized pieces and the good flavour/fattiness. We liked how the flavour had seeped into the entire dish and even the mushrooms and rice were rich with umami flavour. Very fatty though, you'll need to rinse your mouth after eating this if you plan to eat sushi or anything else after. $29 for a large bowl - there's two average sized pieces, decent price. I ordered the same thing from another local Japanese tapas near my house and it's $22 but way less foie gras...and chicken mixed into it. Premium Nigiri Selection - Good sushi! The fish is of adequate quality, really wish there was uni on tonight's selection but none the less the maguro red tuna was really hitting chutoro medium fatty tuna quality. The scallop was fresh, the hamachi was smooth and delicious. $30 for 6 pieces is also pretty fair price in my opinion, definitely check out the selection with the server in advance though to ensure the selection meets your requirements. Black cod (soy maple syrup, stir fried soba) - I made the sad mistake of digging into the rich foie gras don before eating this. Needless to say, it may or may not have disrupted my ability to taste the soy maple syrup because even after chugging tea and eating ginger, the flavour never really got to the peak I thought it'd reach. The soba was also really disappointing, oily and peppery is the only way I can describe it. I also found a few bones in my cod - I know it happens but I really expected more out of the dish. $29 isn't bad for the portion but flavour town on this dish was lacking. Overall, service was quick and prompt despite how busy it was. The server was also really kind to offer us to move from a small table to a booth when it became available. This restaurant is good for when you're craving a bit more quality in a casual setting for a decent-ish buck. Would probably return if I was in the area!

Ironically, after visiting the Yugo stall in Brentwood a few times, I visiting this Yugo for the first time recently. There is a simple elegance with Yugo which I appreciate - small interior, fairly simple and minimalistic, and the presentation of the food follows a similar theme. Yugo labels itself as 'Japanese-French fusion' and while I see the Japanese more than French, there are some subtleties which I do think make it unique. The uni pasta was a good example example of that uniqueness; so simple and creamy but hits just right. The black cod with noodles and beef sashimi were also good, and the dessert menu perfectly compliments the entrees. My fave was the black sesame ice cream and mochi. I would love to try Yugo out again on a future visit!

I was walking along Main and decided to try out Yugo spontaneously. Because we had walked in, we were limited with our sit time (1.5 hours) but it was such a great experience, I can't wait to come back. The ambiance of the restaurant was really nice. Very COVID friendly with the cubicles the shape one of the perimeters of the restaurant. COVID protocols: All staff wore masks and would check for your vaccination records. What I loved: - Le Motown Roll 4/5: This was such a unique roll. It had spicy tuna tartar and was wrapped with soy paper. I found this much lighter than your typical roll which is what I prefer - Uni spot brawn pasta 5/5: The pasta was great, just the amount of al dente I prefer. The ratio of sauce to pasta and uni was perfect. The uni was really fresh. This uni pasta trumps the ones I've had at other restaurants. - Black Cod Soba 5/5: The black cod was so well done. It was so flavourful and perfectly seasoned. The soba noodles paired nicely.

We arrived around 2 PM for our reservation and were greeted warmly right away, which made for a great first impression. The restaurant itself is beautiful. The bamboo divider running through the middle of the space gave it a cozy, modern Japanese-inspired feel, and the overall atmosphere was probably my favorite part of the experience. As for the food, unfortunately it didn't quite live up to the hype for me. I ordered the seafood sizzler bowl, and while it wasn't bad by any means, it felt underwhelming for the price. The bowl was mostly rice, with a few small prawns, tiny scallops, a little roe, and some crab mixed in. I was expecting something more seafood-forward, so it ended up feeling more like a deconstructed fried rice than the premium dish I had envisioned. Same with the unagi bowl, couple small pieces of unagi cut up... The appetizers were actually the highlight of the meal and ended up being more memorable than my main course. I kept waiting for a dish to really wow me, but nothing stood out enough to make me crave a return visit. Maybe I just ordered the wrong items, because I know this place has plenty of fans. Overall, I'm glad I tried it, but based on this visit, I don't see myself making a special trip back.

Maybe it's an American thing to linger and enjoy a dining experience. To stay longer than needed to…read moresoak up the ambiance and give a good moment some extra time for memories. But in other parts of the world the meal is what's important and so is a quick turn around. Guu with Garlic reminded me a lot of the Izakaya restaurants I found under the train lines of Tokyo in many ways, including the amount of time it felt right to stay. The food came out quick, the servers took orders quicker, and the alcohol came out chilled and as nice contrast to the hot food. Looking around and you see the hand written menu on blackboard surfaces on the walls and this feeling of authenticity. The heat of the flames from the kitchen can be felt and seen if you sit at the bar. And the flavors just hit all the right notes. Starting with appetizers, a section izakayas shine at, the first dish we got was their scallop and mayo pizza. With a crispy crunch on the bottom and crust, this reminds you of the flavors of a baked volcano roll or scallop roll you can find in almost any North American sushi restaurant. Just like that dish, it's important to eat it while it's still hot so it doesn't get gross and 느끼 에. Then came the yellowtail tuna "tempura" pieces. Thick pieces of yellowtail tuna flash fried for just the right crisp on the outside with slight pink of the fish inside. It is meaty without being oily or fatty. Great bite. The beef tongue after was interesting. From the color of the sauce it accompanies it you would think it would be heavy in flavor but it is actually light and citrusy. A good cut into the richer tones of the beef tongue. The yaki udon was one of the best I ever had. It was smokey without being overpowering. The beef was thin and tender and balanced well with the mushrooms it also came with. The udon noodles stayed bouncy and chewy which I didn't expect from being grilled. Very tasty and highly recommend this dish. For our final bite we shared a hot stone bowl of their pork and cabbage rice. With the hot stone bowl constantly cooking even after this dish arrived it was imperative to stir the ingredients together constantly for the first two minutes. It allowed for the runny egg to meld with the rice and the crispy texture of some ingredients was a nice bonus. All in all, I loved eating here and if my appetite was bigger I would've tried more on their menu. A solid place to eat with a great atmosphere, if you're looking for delicious food that won't take too much of your time but still lingers in your memories you have to check out Guu with Garlic.

Me, I know nothing about Izakaya or what is or isn't authentic Japanese cuisine, so this review is coming from someone with zero knowledge or expectation of any specific foods or experiences. Despite it being a weeknight, the place was packed. It was good that we had a reservation. There was a couple in line before me and they were walk-ins, and there were no available seats for them. I noted how small this place was, and crowded, with the tables close together and a long bar with a counter and barstools there (also close together). Our reserved table was right by the front door - literally, - so every time the door opened, we got a gust of cold air (and it was a cold February night when we were there). I kept my coat on. Truth be known, I was not very comfortable. Also, it was loud. Very loud. I like how the staff shout Japanese greetings to diners whenever they enter but between the frequent shouts and the sheer volume of chatter from all the diners, all sitting close together in close proximity, it was kinda hard to hear what my friends were saying during our dinner. That said, the environment was super vibrant and, again, my friends said this was very typical of an Izakaya in Japan. Food-wise, I have no idea what my friends ordered. The menu was primarily available by way of a QR code and I had no idea what the dishes were, so I deferred to my friends' knowledge. But I can attest that all the dishes were DELICIOUS. We had some sort of Japanese street food "pancakes" (they were wonderful). We had some sort of stirfry beef with noodles (amazing). We had two types of sashimi (omg both were so fresh and so so good!). We had a few other dishes that I can't recall, but I remember I loved them. So.... the food here was GREAT. Service was also attentive which I hadn't expected, being as busy as the restaurant was. I really liked this place but I'll probably go back in the summertime when the weather is nicer as I was cold there, and I'd dine at an off-time, when the volume wasn't so loud. (I'm too old for the loudness!).

We picked up the 16-piece Premium Cut Rolls (toro, yellowtail, scallop, and truffle lobster), and the quality really showed in the taste. Everything was clean, fresh, and well-balanced -- no heavy sauces, no distractions, just really good fish. The toro was rich and smooth, the scallop was buttery, and the truffle lobster added a nice depth without overpowering the roll. Pickup was quick and seamless, and the food was packaged well for eating on the go before a flight. Portions are standard, but the flavor and quality are absolutely the highlight here. If you care more about how sushi tastes than flashy extras, Hello Nori is a great choice. Would happily come back next time.

The unagi was flame-torched right in front of me. Prices are on the expensive side with small portions, but everything tasted fresh.

Even on a Thursday night, the restaurant was nearly full, which speaks to its popularity. I ordered the Tako Sunomono and the Premium Chirashi Don. Tako Sunomono: The octopus was perfectly tender and the vinegar dressing was refreshing--exactly what I needed to wash away the fatigue of the day. Premium Chirashi Don: The presentation was stunning and immediately worked up my appetite. Every piece of seafood was incredibly fresh and of high quality. You can really taste the difference here. If you're looking for healthy, fresh, and beautifully presented Japanese cuisine, Shizenya is a must-visit. Highly recommended!
