Yuupduk is my go to place to get tteokbokki (rice cakes in spicy sauce). I believe they are a chain from S. Korea, and they are known for their very spicy tteokbokki. The texture of the rice cakes are nice and chewy - more so than other restaurants. I used to get their namesake tteokbokki which can be made to be extra spicy. And when I say spicy, I mean really, really spicy. These days, I've been getting the rosé tteokbokki, which is much less spicy because of the addition of the cream. Unfortunately, they can't seem to make it very spicy (which was the original reason why I craved tteokbokki from here specifically), but the rosé tteokbokki is addictive in its own way. I always add an extra order of the sausage; they have a good snap and the flavor complements the tteokbokki very well. I've had the other dishes here before - the udon, mini kimbap, tuna rice balls, tempura, donkatsu, etc. Everything is pretty well done. The only dish that I do not like from here is the soondae, which is unfortunate because tteokbokki and soondae is such a classic Korean bunsik combo. But alas, I would not recommend getting that dish here. The flavor and the texture of the dish is not up to par with their other menu items. read more

I love Yupdduk's tteokbokki so I came again to introduce my friend to their food (I come to Yupdduk often whenever I'm having a craving for tteokbokki haha). Please refer to my previous review for more thoughts. We came right at opening at 11:30 am on a Saturday and shared a large rose tteokbokki that was delicious as always. The rice cakes are tender and chewy & the sauce is as addictive as usual with its balance of savory umami, sweetness, and spice. I haven't had the large size tteokbokki in awhile as I usually come alone & get the small size but the large size is a great option for when you eat with someone else. My friend really liked the tteokbokki as well, I'm glad to convert another person to be a Yupdduk fan ;) We also ordered the kimari/gimmari/deep fried seaweed rolls filled with glass noodles. It's my first time having this dish and this was also very tasty. The glass noodles inside are well seasoned and savory & the deep fried seaweed is nice and crispy. It's a great appetizer to pair with tteokbokki! The music they play is always nice and chill & usually the restaurant isn't very crowded. There's wifi as well! I really enjoyed my meal here! The food is the kind of stuff you find at street vendors in Korea- rteokbokki, kimbap, fishcake, etc. They have two menus- one with different types of tteokbokki, and one with an assortment of different foods such as budae jjigae and oden tang. I love that they have small sizes of food thats usually a huge portion, like budae jjigae- those big pots sometimes feeds 3-4 people! They were able to serve our large party quickly and the staff were very nice I got the rose tteokbokki and I loved the flavor. I will say the mild is still pretty spicy! This place is more of a 3.5 but rounded down for a couple of reasons. I came here excited since cheese covered and fried foods, much like a lot of things in life, are bad for you but delicious and exciting. Ordered the combo dinner set which came with the kimchi fried rice and cheese, the mixed rice cake and a katsu, more than enough food for two people honestly. The cheese kimchee fried rice came out first and was immediately disappointed with how lukewarm the dish was and how underwhelming it was because of that. I wanted to mix my cheese with the other ingredients there but couldn't since the cheese would just clump together and go nowhere, the dish overall was average at best. The cheese mixed rice cakes were another item that was just average at best, nothing really popped out at me, nothing really struck me as excellent, again just another dish that was not really noteworthy. The best thing here, surprisingly was the katsu. It was prepared extremely well, the meat was tender and the coating was super crispy, it's probably one of the best katsus I've tasted anywhere. Still a top tier spot! Had the mini rice balls and the mini kimbab again, because they're delicious! For my main dish I went with Yupgi Ramen and added two eggs along with assorted oden(fishcakes). Decided to go spicy with the ramen - was told the options are either Mild or Spicy. Ramen was super flavorful on its own, but the fishcakes added an awesome texture along with some more awesome flavor. The same young lady attended me today and she was just as attentive and nice as last time. This place has yet to let me down. Everything i've had is delicious. Where do I start. I ordered for pick-up, which included tuna mayo over rice, curry over rice (lunch special), spam mayo over rice, and the signature dish Tteokbokki extra spicy. It did not come with the cheese on top, which is a standard to Yupik, which was disappointing. The portion size seemed fine for the cost of the food. The taste, however, is something to be angry about. The tteokbokki tastes absolutely bland, too fishy, and not spicy at all. How does rice cake have a fishy taste! The tuna mayo over rice had 0 flavor. The curry had 0 flavor. The spam over rice had 0 flavor. The total cost for the entire meal was not justified as I could not finish my meal. Ordered the rosé mild dukbokki, the assorted spicy dukbokki, kimbap, fried seaweed rolls, donkatsu, and odeng soup. Honestly their rice cakes made my day. It's the best dukbokki I've had in a long time in NYC. This is THE PLACE to go for spicy flavorful not just sweet dukbokki. Yes the rice cakes weren't perfectly cylindrical, but frankly they were just as bouncy chewy. There is a disclaimer saying that the rice cakes might not hold their shape because they come from Korea and need to be thawed. I had no problems with their shape. If anything some of the cracks held MORE of the flavor, and it was awesome. I enjoy eating the spicy fire chicken noodles, and Yupdduk's spicy was just about that level. It was the type that adds. Curious to try their spiciest level next time and give their chicken feet and rice balls a go. Spicy cheese ribs (5/5): these ribs are great! So much meat and it damn near comes right off the bones. The sauce is great and the bit of spice was a good addition. Then there's cheese, chips and corn. And once you add the cheese to your rib bite, then it's just amazing! Rose tteokbokki (5/5): as great as regular tteokbokki but with a creamier sauce. Very tasty and you can add other ingredients such as noodles or rice balls. Pork cutlet (5/5): can't go wrong with pork cutlet. Theirs is lightly battered but very crispy. Best topokki in the flushing area! If you can handle a little spice, go with the spicy version. It's about as close to a bowl from Korea as you can get. It burns but burns so gooooood. I ordered for delivery two bacon kimchi fried rice. Both of them didn't come with cheese. I don't know if they forgot to put it or it just doesn't come with it. I checked the reviews and all of them had cheese in the kimchi fried rice. So I assume that mine rice was supposed to come with cheese too. But for some reason they didn't put it. We ordered the Moddem Yupdduk (the ddukboki with everyone on it) in the Mild flavor, because I heard that even their mild has a kick to it. I would recommend that if you're able to handle a bit of spice to go for the Spicy (the levels are Very Mild, Mild, Spicy, and Very Spicy) - I think it would've been more *fun* to eat. The Mild level DID have a bit of a kick to it, but being someone who likes eating spicy food, I enjoyed it but I would've enjoyed it more with a little more heat! It comes with glass noodles, an egg, fishcakes, little plump sausages (2), cabbage, and lots of cheese. We got it in a small size, which was adequate for splitting with the other food we got, but if it was the only thing I ordered for myself, I would've been able to finish it. I'd say the portion wasn't HUGE, but it definitely wasn't too small. Enough to make 1 person pretty full. We also got the kimchi fried rice, which was served on a cast iron pan surrounded by melty, crusty cheese and topped with a runny egg. This was also well-seasoned and delicious, and I'd definitely get it again. So....I was thinking about how much I liked the food, and I'm wondering if maybe I liked it so much because of the ample amounts of melty cheese that topped the food. Would I have liked it as much if it wasn't so cheesy? Probably not. But unless you're crazy, you'd be eating these items with cheese as well, so I guess this line of thinking is moot! Oh....unfavorable mention: the boneless chicken feet. LISTEN. Do not order this. This just didn't work. I think because it was boneless, you didn't have any of the bone to act as a foil to the fatty, cartilage-y goodness of chicken feet..so it was just mush...totally just mushy and sloppy and snotty. On top of that, even though the dish was spicy, it was totally bland - like they'd forgotten to use any salt to season the dish. To me, it was difficult to eat, and most of the dish was left. And at $23, that really sucked. However, overall, I'd recommend this restaurant. Their ddukboki was pretty good, the kimchi fried rice was good, and the cheesy goodness just can't be beat! It breaks my heart to update my review for this spot, but I have to agree with some other Yelpers that the service here has gone down since the new management took over. Now I'm not an unreasonable person. I understand how hard it is to work in the food industry, as well as the insane real estate prices along Northern Blvd in this area. I'm also very easy to please. But pleased I am not after several repeated visits in the last few months, which is a damn shame because I used to come here extremely often, including for takeout, for years now. And I've definitely been leaning towards more takeout, if that, recently. First the good news is they have a nice TV and some good K-Pop choices playing in the background. Food seems a bit saltier and spicier across the board than over a year ago, a subtle but noticeable level change, but it's still consistently good K-comfort food and taste-wise is great. Staff has done a bit better with the greetings and the basics, which is a positive change. But there's significant and reasonable room for improvement here. First and foremost, a restaurant needs to be hospitable or else why even come here? We've been going here for years and recommending the food to others, but the general atmosphere here seems chilly and standoffish, and we still don't feel like regulars. But the biggest issue here, and a huge red flag, is the absolute unwillingness to reasonably make the food as the customer prefers and the stubborn refusal for any accommodation (allergy, preference, or otherwise), even for something simple and already there, such as ordering chicken katsu over the pork katsu for dishes (which is the same price and categorized the same in their toppings section). The reason they gave last winter was that the kitchen was busy. Sure, it's only half full, but okay, understandable. Now that the place is empty, I'm told that this is the manager's rule, and he's not even here working. Yikes! At this point, why even bother having a table service at that point then? Just do takeout and pay fair wages to your staff if there's going to be a lack of service. A restaurant should never want you to go home and make the food yourself, especially since I can make a ridiculous amount of curry for the same price. It's just a huge shame and disappointment, as well as frustrating as this type of treatment fuels prejudiced stereotypes and hurts the AA community at large. It can't just be about pretty pictures and presentation - a human touch is crucial in the hospitality industry. This is a difference between your regular customers only spending $200 a year instead of $2,000 a year. It's unfortunate, and reminds me why it's so easy to appropriate K-food, whether it's our KFC being marketed as clean double-fried southern Asian-fusion chicken or the #1 Korean BBQ chain in the world being Japanese. But welp, I digress - that's a story for another day. Listen, I'm only upset for them because I think this place deserves more than being the current Plan B to the "Oh man, this place is packed, guess we'll settle for Yupdukk" situation. Otherwise, the food is decent, just management needs to step up with the service. They have a great new menu book, by the way. read more

I was in the Flushing area and was not sure what to get but I knew I was feeling some sort of noodles. I walked by Yupdduk and saw some Yelp reviews saying this place was really good so I decided to give it a try, and it did not disappoint! The staff was very friendly and greeted us right away. Each table has its own hand sanitizer bottle which I really like since it is important to make sure we are staying clean and healthy. The water comes in it's own frosted glass bottle which is a nice touch. I ordered the Oden Udon Pot which comes with an assortment of fish balls and tofu, and an egg. One of my favorite spots to grab some korean food. I also LOVE their deokbokki here. I've tried to replicate it myself, came close, but it just isn't the same. We ordered the deokbokki in mild but warning: mild could be very spicy! I normally come here with a couple of friends, so instead of ordering one dish for myself, we all order 3-4 dishes and share. The portioning is pretty decent and if you order this way, you get to try more of their menu. I've tried their curry pasta, spicy deokbokki, and their cheesy kimchi fried rice. We come mainly for the spice especially when we need to destress. We get the couple set for two which is served with tonkatsu, teokbokki, potatoe salad, rice balls and kimchi fried rice with egg. It is very filling and delicious. We did try the regular spicy at first but it was not as spicy as we expected. If you can handle the spice and normally like spicy foods we recommend you go with the extra spicy. But as you keep eating, it will eventually start to burn!! We did try the extra spicy chicken feet and jokbal. They were delicious too. It would pair greatly with a bottle of soju. Unfortunately, we couldn't handle the spice and had to take it to go. The prices are fair and for a couple set amongst two people it'll run you around 30-35$ which is not too bad. The service is pretty good too. There's usually only one waitress so when it gets busy, you should expect some wait time. The store is located on the Main Street of of northern so expect some parking when you go towards the residential area. Nice Korean Cafe in K-town Flushing. The atmosphere here is pretty modern. Located on Northern Blvd and 157th st. I've had this place bookmarked for quite some time. The hamburger steak itself had a slightly sweet sauce and an egg on top. It was a good size and pretty filling. It unfortunately didn't come with rice, so I had to order that as a side, at an additional cost. Although it's nominal, I'm not liking this trend, of charging for rice.
