My view on sushi as a whole has completely changed...in an absolutely amazing way. Omakase Style: basically translates over as "I leave it up to you." The chef curates a multi course and highly personalized tasting menu. My wife and I had the pleasure to partake in this unbelievable experience for our 21st anniversary, and it was hands down one of the best meals we've ever had. Not this month, not just sushi, not just in NC...but one of the top meals of all time anywhere. We had the Grand Omakase, which came out to 10 courses in total. I won't go into detail on each and every course, but let's just say that each and every course was of the highest quality fish, sushi or meat we've had anywhere. From the sushi flown out straight from Japan, to the beluga caviar and A5 Wagyu, and everything in between. We've had sushi across the nation and overseas, 100s of times. This has taken the top #1 spot out of all of them, especially with what we were served in the Grand Omakase package. Impeccable service, 8 sushi chefs all working efficiently at once in an open style sushi kitchen, all within a classy (but not pretentious by any means) establishment. M Sushi is probably one of the best sushi establishments in the Triangle area. They offer a few different Omakase options as well as a la carte services. They are not cheap but the sushi is great quality. We had a reservation and it was fairly busy the night we came. We had gone to a few Omakases before so we're familiar with the process but our server did a great job at explaining everything and explaining the different cuts of fish. We didn't sit at the bar for the full experience but everything else was very good. They also offer a variety of drinks as well. The inside can be a bit crowded during peak dinner times so plan for that. It's a bit dark inside and goes for kind of like a night bar vibe. The bathrooms are nice. Once the Omakase is over you can order a la carte. Definitely one of the best if not best sushi options in the Triangle. They also have a location in Downtown Durham. read more

Grabbed dinner here for a recent celebration and had a good time. First, I was a little disappointed that no one was present at the front desk when we walked in, and we had to wait a couple of minutes for someone to greet us. Just seems a little odd for a restaurant as nice as M Sushi to drop the ball on something this simple, but whatever. Otherwise, the staff were super nice throughout our meal, including our server. We were seated at a standard table (one booth seat, one chair) and I immediately noticed how long the table was between me and my wife. Nothing crazy but it did make the meal slightly less intimate somehow, and it also made it a little harder to hear each other. The tables were also quite close together, so it felt a little bit "NYC" somehow :) Not terrible but I guess I wouldn't consider it a super romantic spot. The all-black vibes were pretty interesting, though, and the walls kind of looked like volcanic rock or something. We booked the Grand Omakase for our table of two, so we were served a whole bunch of courses :) I was actually surprised at how quickly the food was brought out. I was expecting our dinner to last at least 2 hours, but we were there for only 1.5. I think I would have preferred a slightly slower pace, but the amount of food wasn't too overbearing at least, since each dish was quite small. My absolute favorite was the caviar with the fatty tuna tartare, but the sashimi and nigiri were also super tasty and fresh. Drink-wise, the beer menu was OK - I got something light to avoid overpowering the food, but I probably should have ordered sake instead. My wife got a glass of Riesling and I thought it was kind of yucky but I'm not a big wine person so take that opinion with a grain of salt :) Our bill ended up being nearly $500 after tax and tip, as the Grand Omakase was $165 a person. That's a little steep for me, but I do understand that top quality fish is expensive :) I enjoyed my dinner at M Sushi but I'll probably get a couple of rolls next time instead. read more

I was overnight near Raleigh and asked the hotel front desk for a list of recommendations. He gave me a printout of restaurants nearby and I noticed one named M Sushi. Since I love good sushi I asked him about it. He smiled and said it was great, reasonable and had wonderful food. I tried it and he was absolutely right on! M Sushi is a gem located in the Fenton District near Cary. The food was very fresh, I had Yellowtail Nigrini and the M Sushi special roll. It was outstanding! In addition it was after 8 when I arrived, the place Closes at 9:30 but I was never rushed. I ate at the bar, being by myself, and the bartender was very courteous and friendly she took very good care to make sure I had everything I needed. I got plenty of soy sauce, wasabi and ginger root! Final bill was $37 with tax, which is very reasonable and the food was really more than I could eat(but I did anyway because it tasted so fresh). One of the celebratory events that we planned for my daughter's graduation from college was to have dinner at M Sushi. My son heard about them on social media and made reservations a couple weeks back. My daughter's graduation was yesterday so our reservation to M sushi was last night. Our original reservations were for 8:00 pm, but due to graduation activity delays, we called in to have the reservation changed to 8:45 pm. We didn't have any complications changing the time. We arrived a bit earlier than expected; however, our table was not yet ready, so we went across the street to another restaurant to have some drinks. We came back at exactly 8:45 pm, but our table was still not ready. We ended up waiting another 15 to 20 minutes before our table was ready. The ambience in this restaurant was nice and had a modernized feel and look. It is not a spacious restaurant. We ordered several things from the menu: Small Plates - Edamame and Scallops; Maki - Truffle Seared Tuna, M Special, Spider Roll, Dynamite Roll, and California Roll; Nigiri - Shime Saba House Cured Japanese Mackerel; Specialty Drinks. No one in our party liked the scallops. They did not taste fresh and did not have the seafood flavor. It was a bit bland and the texture seemed off. It was a little better with the sauce but still nothing that was appealing to anyone at the table. The edamame was good, but needed some sea salt on the top or mixed in consistently as only the ones on the bottom had the flavor of sea salt. The Maki we enjoyed. While they all tasted good, our favorites were the Truffle Seared Tuna, the Dynamite Roll, and the M Special. The Truffle Seared Tuna was unbelievable. It tasted fresh and was the most flavorful of all the other Maki. My ultimate favorite dish of the night was the Nigiri Shime Saba House Cured Japanese Mackerel. This was hands-down the most flavorful and best tasting dish. The texture was perfect, and it almost felt like it melted in your mouth. It was incredibly good. Overall, we enjoyed all the dishes we ordered with the exception of the scallops. Pretty solid sushi spot with nice ambiance & service when we visited for lunch! I came with a party of 5 and we had made a reservation ahead of time so there was no wait, but the restaurant wasn't too busy during lunchtime. Unfortunately, two of the people in our party accidentally went to the Durham location so they had to trek all the way over to this location in Cary which delayed them by quite a bit. Our server was so gracious when we explained what had happened, and we didn't feel rushed throughout our meal at all. We shared the tuna crispy rice and crudo to start and both were tasty. I really enjoyed the combination of flavors for the crudo, though I have had better tuna crispy rice at other establishments. For my main entree, I got their M special roll which came with a sea trout / avocado roll as well as part of their lunch combo. The fish here is definitely fresh and high quality, and I like that their specialty rolls aren't too over the top -- it really lets the ingredients shine! Another M restaurant down in the book, M Sushi! This was obviously one of the first restaurants I wanted to try post-pregnancy, and typical of the M restaurants, it did not disappoint! I loved the modern decor, especially the back wall made of rock. Our server was upbeat, knowledgeable of the menu, and had great recommendations. Per our server recommendation, we started off with the crispy rice and scallop small plates, which may have been my favorite part of the meal. The scallops were lightly fried so that they were still raw in the middle - the crunch on the outside was exceptional paired along with the smooth bite from the inside. Same dark and chic vibe, but I prefer the aesthetic in Durham a little more, it feels more intimate, if that makes sense. M has consistently good sushi. I'm always happy with the omakase. To the point that, that's pretty much all we order. You can add on à La carte if you want, so we usually add uni, but you don't really need to, as it is plenty of food. My preference is to sit at the sushi bar, but they have table service too. You're in for a lot of food, during a dinner rush it can feel very leisurely, but it is just really well timed out. That said, I would not come here for a quick meal. It's more of an evening out experience. *So* sorely disappointed...sigh. I only recently heard about the Fenton development in Cary. I had a midday class very near there and was encouraged to see the many restaurants that were part of the community. Always open to trying new places, I thought I would head over for lunch after my class. I *love* sushi; reasonably enough, then, I selected M Sushi as my lunch destination. I was also swayed by the rave reviews they garnered on Yelp and elsewhere, as well as a first-person thumbs-up from an acquaintance. I arrived shortly after they opened for lunch and in fact was their first customer. As you'll see from the enclosed photo, seating is limited to a row of tables against the wall and at the sushi bar. (As you'll also see, the pic was taken after a few more guests had arrived.) I was seated at the corner table closest to the front of the restaurant. That was fine. My first issue was with the ambience. I think this was a case of there being a difference between what kind of space works for lunch vs. dinner. The dining area at M Sushi-Cary is a small, subtly lit space; there is no natural light (i.e., no windows to the outside world). That probably works just great at dinnertime, but no so much at lunchtime. I thought it made the small-ish room seem borderline claustrophobic. The next issue had to do with my server, a very friendly young woman whose name I will not share in the hopes that my issue with her was not attributable to her personally, but perhaps was due to the restaurant requiring certain behavior of their wait staff (although I can't imagine why it would be). My server repeatedly called me "my dear" and "my love." I am 65 years old. If anyone is going to call anyone "my dear" - let alone "my love"! - the roles should be reversed. I find that behavior incredibly unprofessional - especially in an upscale restaurant - not to mention patronizing. Yes, I could simply have said, "Please don't call me 'my dear' or 'my love'," but I think that would just have made the rest of the meal awkward. Onto the food! I had a perfectly fine glass of prosecco, the seaweed salad and the tuna roll with cucumber. I thought the seaweed salad was overpriced. Although it may appear as a generous portion in the photo, I believe that was due to its sitting on top of a bed of lettuce leaves. Other than that, it was a typical, fine seaweed salad. I was a bit disappointed in the tuna roll, but that was probably my own fault for not ordering something more adventurous/flavor-forward. All in all, I felt let down by M Sushi. I perhaps could be persuaded to return for dinner sometime, but will rule them out for future lunches. read more

We sat at a table for 6 on a Sunday at 1:30 for a friends birthday. Even though some of our party was late they were very accommodating. The place was not very crowded and we attend to well. Our server was so kind and efficient. We started with some small plates of crudo and crispy rice which were both sooo good and tasty. Our first rolls were the rainbow and maguro futomaki. Then some traditional maki with yellowtail and a dynamite roll. Dynamite roll was not very spicy if at all by itself. I recommend some wasabi if you need a lil extra heat. The Chirashi was delicious - the amount of fish was very generous, the quality was great, and the price was very much worth it. It also came with a miso soup. My wife's Sushi Deluxe Combo had 6 pieces of nigiri and a sushi roll, and also came with a miso soup. The food was great, the service was friendly, helpful, and prompt, and the space is nice, new, and clean. Parking at Fenton is convenient, but may be a bit of a walk depending on where you park. BLOWN. AWAY. Absolutely floored. What an incredible sushi experience from beginning to end at M Sushi in their newer Cary location. The nigiri omakase journey has officially set the bar for what sushi can be in my eyes, and is now the major leagues. Every other experience I have ever had just got sent down, not to say that any of them were bad, but this was just so exceptional. From the jump, walking into M is like walking into a little slice of Jiro Dreams of Sushi mixed with almost a modern speakeasy. The sushi bar is the focal point of the restaurant, and the activity behind it is constant and buzzing. A half dozen chefs minimum, honing their craft and meticulously crafting their orders, including Peter, who I am told is the head chef and the artist behind our omakase experience. Somehow, even in this most modern and high end setting, there is nothing pretentious about it. The food is the center of the experience. Every step along the way, your meal becomes more and more "worth it" and you begin to appreciate the intricacies. I could wax poetic about each individual piece of nigiri, but there are a few that took me to a special place. The most surprising was the mackerel. A fish that I don't usually like because of it's oily nature, they completely turned that on its head for me. The right balance of vinegar, soy, and attention to ideal thicknesses and temperatures made it a totally different fish. Snow trout was a first for me, and we all agreed this was a favorite. The tour of the bluefin tuna, from the more typical bright red akami, to the slightly more fatty side (chūtoro), and the ultimate in decadence... the fatty tuna underbelly (ōtoro), is hard to beat as a favorite. They delighted us at the end with an ōtoro handroll, that I will absolutely never forget. If this wasn't enough, we were invited into the test kitchen side of M to indulge in a couple unique dishes by Connor (I believe the executive chef). Now, all of the staff at M were very professional, excited to share the experience with us, and engaged, except for Connor... ... who was also very funny, and displayed a real desire to elevate M to the highest level it could be. In the test kitchen, I had my first caviar experience. Caviar on top of homemade sweet cornbread and honey butter. NECESSARY PAUSE. Yes. It was an out of body experience, as you might imagine would be the case. After our caviar treat, we indulged in a dessert of chocolate ganache cake with cherry blossom ice cream and granola to add a crunch. The cherry blossom in the ice cream hits your senses immediately, like the best version of a seasoned perfume. There was no way to write a short review here. This was not only my top sushi experience, but probably a top 5 restaurant experience of my entire life in any category. All the applause to M Sushi and what they have built, and continue to build, in the Triangle. Fish taste fresh and of great quality. Service - not the best. It took a long time for our waitress to come back to get my drink order. Small plates were not provided when the food came out. I ordered a sake and was given a rose (as stated in the receipt too) but I couldn't get it fixed as she never came around. I had a wonderful experience at M sushi - service, ambiance, and the food were all excellent. I sat at the sushi bar and ordered the nigiri omakase. Both the server and chef were attentive and the dishes came out at the right time. The fish were fresh and high quality, and I particularly enjoyed the vinegar rice. It really felt like a true omakase experience with the chef explaining each fish and checking in to see if it had the right amount of wasabi. In addition to the 12 pieces of nigiri, I was given an option for an additional piece of my choice which was a very nice note. The value was amazing as it was $85 for 16 courses. Highly recommend getting the nigiri omakase!
