Was craving sushi and this really hit the spot. We started with the tempura and it was really good with two of everything, which made it a great appetizer to split. I ordered the Christmas roll after seeing the Yelp reviews and it was everything I expected and more. It's not listed on the menu since it's a seasonal item but they made it for me anyways. We love it here! We eat here very often (since the kids were preschoolers). Now that they are no longer "kids", one of them wanted to have a dinner party for her milestone teen birthday with her friends and chose Genki. There is an area beside the sushi bar to the right as you enter the restaurant that was perfect for them. They had that area all to themselves, away from the main dining area. Li was absolutely awesome!! She made it such a wonderful experience and took care of my daughter and her friends like they were family. She checked on them often and made sure they had all they needed. We sat at a booth on the other side while the dinner party was going on and had dinner ourselves. Li would come by and let us know how they were doing. You can't go wrong with their hibachi dinners - my go to order. We also order the sushi, bento boxes and appetizers. The hot food comes out piping hot and fresh and the salad is chilled & delicious. The sushi is FAR SUPERIOR to the $5 deal in the supermarket next door. It is a night and day difference. We often call in an order just for the sushi, stop by and pick it up - no more supermarket sushi! It is important and a pleasure to support local business owners like Li and Jack. They work hard to provide excellent food and customer service. I've been here a few times now and I've tried a few different things. I probably wouldn't have tried them again if it weren't for my husband who loves this place. I tried their teriyaki chicken and would give that two stars, it was two pieces of very bland chicken breast drenched in teriyaki sauce, with rice and frozen vegetable medley in some translucent sauce that made them even more soggy. Next up, sushi. I love sushi and love a nice tuna or salmon roll. Presentation here is a 5/5 but flavor is 1/5. This was not good sushi at all. I can't really pinpoint what was wrong with it but it was so hard to enjoy, I threw it out. The one thing I enjoy here is their hibachi lunches/dinners. Ok, I had hibachi steak and chicken - steak cooked medium - even my wife who's not been in a steak eating kinda mood (blame pregnancy) was like, "wow, that's great steak!" How is this place in business? Let my start by saying no sushi is bad sushi except for this place. I got the Philly roll, Las Vegas roll, fisherman's catch and spicy sashimi maki and paid ~$42 for it.... what a huge disappointment when I got home and opened the box. Take a look at the pics. Would you pay $42 for what I got? Grocery store sushi is better than this!! Now I've never been here before but I was able to distinguish which rolls were which by order of elimination. My spicy sashimi maki was literally shrimp tempura wrapped in nori with rice on the outside and sesame seeds. What??? They got the rest of the order right I am assuming but it all tasted meh. I paid in cash and was in a rush so I didn't ask for an itemized receipt but didn't get offered a regular receipt either so I have no idea whether I was overcharged. We have ordered many times from Genki and enjoy to support local restaurants. How disappointing is it when we order 13 rolls for a dinner with family and they drop the ball. We ordered with specifications because we had someone with Celiac's. They made errors in the order and they also made sub par rolls. I called the manager to let her know things didn't go well with our order. She was full of excuses and explanations and did not care to hear about the errors in our order. As a restaurant manager and chef (husband) in our house, it blows my mind the customer service we received. I always give the benefit of the doubt to local restaurants and give them the opportunity to right a wrong, but they weren't interested. I was visiting my sister from California. She's goes to this restaurant monthly after saving lives with a platelet donation! We were greeted warmly by the staff. Lunch special included two rolls (I went with the Snow Mountain roll and the Las Vegas) and salad for $12.99. Everything was delicious and the service was great. The fish was sliced pretty thin as topping. My friend's teriyaki rice was too salty, although the veggies was not flavored well and too hard for chewing, probably needed another few minutes of stir fry and get the sauce distributed more evenly. We usually go to a basic sushi place in Durham, but we were around the Apex Cary area and wanted to try something new with our friends there. They suggested Genki. The service was really great; the waiter was friendly and nice. She knew her sushi really well and was really helpful when we were asking about popular rolls and suggestions. We went around 7:30ish on a Saturday and it was quite busy. There were only two sushi chefs making all the sushi for the entire restaurant...which made the wait for the actual food really long. I was impressed with the sushi and extremely hungry. I truly liked all the rolls minus one. I wouldn't recommend getting a roll with fried oysters because we bit into pearls and it was a little spicy for me. Fuji Yama has to be my favorite followed by the Sweet Dragon then Super Rainbow then Fireman. The basic rolls were cheaper but still tasted delicious like the scallops roll and eel roll. read more

I came here on a Friday night and it was so busy that the wait for a table was 25minutes, which wasn't too bad since you have access to the bar. The service was good. The bartender, hostess, and waitress were nice. The food is bad. - chicken yakisoba: Panda Express makes better noodle. Also, the chicken was old and overcooked; it would crumble when you bite it. - fried spicy tuna roll: tempura was underdone so it wasn't crispy. Spicy tuna was cooked and pink, rather than red - couples platter: nigiri fish were unevenly sliced and had gristle still left on it so they were tough to eat. Spicy Tuna roll wasn't spicy and didn't taste like tuna. Again, tuna was pink and looked like it was cooked or just bad. Overall, it was a letdown for a 4 star restaurant. read more

Our overall experience was pretty positive. The sushi selection is wide and the fish is fresh. There was no wait and our waitress was pleasant. The house specials are unique to the place, the rice consistency was just right, and the individual pieces were also wrapped tightly...they did not fall apart when I was trying to eat it. The only issue we had was the wait time for our food. Granted it was 7pm on a Saturday night. However, there was only two sushi chef and it took us around 30 minutes to get our food. We might go again on less busy place. Now for our favorites: We LOVE the Fuji Yama. It is the best bang for your buck. It has salmon, tuna, yellowtail, masago, topped with delicious scallop. If you love raw sushi, this is the one to get. If you are looking for a cheap roll, scallop and eel are basic but solid for $5ish. I was disappointed with the the Genki Special. It had too much tempura for my taste. If you love eel and raw fish, the super rainbow roll encompasses everything. Plus, I had my mind on dumplings all day and wanted to extinguish the yearning that was penetrating the deepest parts of my very soul. Too much? Okay, I'll reel it in a bit... It was dark inside at lunch time and I was the only one there. Instead of taking my customary seat at the sushi bar, I opted for a booth and ordered the Yakisoba Chicken and pork dumplings. To the uninitiated, Yakisoba is "thin egg noodles cooked in our house soy-ginger based soba sauce. Each comes with your choice of soup or fresh tossed salad with our secret ginger dressing." I ordered the soup and it was pretty damned good for garden variety miso. And the service was obviously prompt (it was just me) and friendly. The noodles were pretty good, nothing to brag about nor trash. Just pretty good. But I was very unimpressed with their dumplings. The pork filling was fine, but the casings were flimsy and broke too easily for my tastes. I've yet to find awesome dumplings in the area, but I'm hearing that David's Dumpling and Noodle Bar is a good bet. I plan to one day try their Bento Boxes because the photos online looked great. Also, the sushi chef said they often carry Sea Urchin, which is a favorite of mine. I may end up calling ahead to check before venturing out. read more

Very fresh, great preparation Sushi - the place has to have a high turn-over - Genki does. Sushi grade fish is deep frozen at -31°F until use. So anytime you see a place with pre-cut fish (red bowl for example) you really are not getting Sushi grade fish and you run the risk ofd picking up a nasty parasite. Don't eat Sushi on a buffer (anywhere!), anyway back to the review : look at the pic I put up - it really gives you a great idea of what you get. This place has good fish, good portions, artful preparation AND good service. So glad I found this place! Especially since it is kinda hidden, but its right across from Harris Teeter in the small plaza. Off ten ten road. A hidden gem if you ask me! We went here on a Thursday night for dinner. The place was pretty empty but I wasn't complaining! We were seated in a comfy booth. It's a rather small restaurant but the place was nicely decorated with a nice sushi bar and was clean. My server was good but never mentioned any specials. That's all right though because listed on they had it on the wall. We ordered spring rolls, the sweet and sour sauce it came with was great. 3 small spring rolls for 3.99, a bit pricey, I'd say. We also ordered the sashimi appetizer with salmon, tuna, and whitefish. It was amazing!!! I loved the salmon, it had a beautiful buttery taste. I'm drooling just thinking about it. My fiancee favorite was the tuna. We both wanted seconds. For dinner we both got a roll Bam, Bam and the philly roll both. Both were fresh, new, and delicious. Wife and I ate here last night. Ordered Tuna and Salmon nigiri along with multiple cut rolls and tuna hand rolls. Fish was "fishy" smelling, color of the meat was not right (pale ...like hamburger meat that is going bad in your fridge - see attached). We have been looking for a good sushi bar close to our home in Holly Springs and this is NOT it. Best sushi we've found is on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh (Sushi Tsune).
