I always thought 5 Guys was the place to go for a burger. Then, I went to Z-Burger. I was initially skeptical - how could anything be better than a 5 Guys' burger? Well, Z-Burger has done it. I like a lot of toppings on my burgers - I'm talking, mushrooms, pickles, onions, lettuce, tomato, mustard, mayo, ketchup - the works. When I get that at 5 Guys, the bun always falls apart. At Z-Burger, the bun is more substantial (and tastier, I think), and held together throughout the last bite. I think the burger itself was just as flavorful as 5 Guys' burgers. The fries are great, too. They're crispier and not as greasy as the 5 Guys' fries, and you get just as many (an entire bag) with a "regular" order. Then, there are the milkshakes. I got the mocha milkshake and it was thick (but not too thick - I could still drink it through a straw), creamy, and all around delicious. The only thing 5 Guys has that Z-Burger doesn't is the box of free peanuts. But really, I'd take a milkshake over peanuts any day. First, this place filled a much-needed void along Wisconsin -- that Chipotle, Popeyes, Domino's, 7-11 stretch above Van Ness was a wasteland. Second, it's better than Five Guys. Nearly identical burger, only less greasy. More topping choices. Z Sauce (like Russian, only with some red pepper or chili powder). And the onion rings are real good -- not too heavy with a good consistency (and come in giant portions). Plus, the service and quality control are WAY better here than at many Five Guys locations (I'm looking at that uninspired, anti-social bunch at Dupont). Only downside is no peanuts. Everyone is on the Rays bandwagon. BUT, has El Presidente been back since? Nooooooo, it's because he's out looking for some fries, milkshake, and whatever else. I was going to write this review as I was just eating at Z-Burger, but while I was there, the Presidential family (sans dad) was picking up an order to go (so I definitely have to now). I was waiting for dad to come in, so missed out on the fact that mom and kids were already standing in line as I was playing with my phone. Not really the point with who eats here and who doesn't. That shouldn't be why you pick a place. . . the food should be the reasn. I've had the burgers here, and they're good. A bit messy, but still good. A "regular" order of fries or onion-rings will clog your arteries until 2010 (if I'm eating them. . . I'll eat about 1/4 of what they give me. . . don't know what a large order consists of, but I imagine it's about 50lbs of potatoes). Tonights review is on the cheese-steak. I realize if you're not in Philthy, it's supposed to be called a "steak and cheese". . . but, sh-, this was one good mf steak 'n cheese!!! :-) I'm all pommes-fritted out, and will be tasting them for the next month before I return (I figure that's how long it's going to take me to work off the calories I just consumed). If you're in the mood to get THAT much closer to a heart-attack, Z-Burger is the place to go. My husband and I go here for delicious burgers, fries and thick milkshakes whenever we've in the mood for a 'cheat' meal. The staff is always friendly and helpful, even letting me sample a shake flavor before ordering an entire shake. The portions are huge, so I would suggest ordering on the conservative side (especially the fries). It's just a great place for a simple burger and fries. I ate the chicken sandwich for the first time and it is delicious! I've had the chicken sandwich at Chick-fil-A and I prefer the Z-Burger sandwich. I'm a huge Five Guys fan, but I do love burgers in general, so I was pretty excited to finally try this place out. I tried their Single Bacon Cheeseburger with 'Everything' - which included mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickles, fried onion, sauteed mushrooms, ketchup, and mustard as the toppings. The beef patty was fine, and it was a solid 3-star burger. I was more impressed with their onion rings, as it was wonderfully battered and beautifully fried - nice and crispy and it was quite tasty! The Z-Style fries were just lightly salted, regular hand-cut fries, which were also pretty good. I wasn't a fan of their Cookies 'n' Cream milkshake, as it had a funny aftertaste. It was cool to learn that their patties are hand-formed, always fresh, and never frozen. Not bad at all, but it's no Five Guys or Elevation Burger. I do like that they are opening a non-burger place right there under the same roof. I think that's smart business because when one or two people want the greasy goodness of a burger and fries for lunch but the rest of the crowd is thinking more like chicken or anything not-a-burger, this place is a winner for the bunch--or at least it will be as soon as they open Sandwish just across the dining area. There's certainly nothing BAD about Z-Burger, but for some reason, my first though when I bit into my cheeseburger was "school lunch" and I haven't thought that about a burger in many, many (too many) years. The burger patty itself (I think) had this slighty school cafeteria-like flavor that I can describe in no other way than school-lunch-like. Maybe it was the girl behind the counter. I definitely had a crush! ;-) So, you will probably like this place if you like burgers and fries. They don't overdose you on fries here as they do at Five Guys, but you get plenty and they are well above average, thicker cut and cooked just right. Again, the burger patty was very institutional or something. I can't quite place what it was other than not quite up to the freshness par that I think I must be accustomed to getting at Five Guys and Elevation Burger which are superior. The chocolate malt I had at Z-Burger was very chocolaty and they score big points in this department but it also does not beat Elevation Burger's malt. If I am in Tenley and craving this anti-health food, I will consider stopping here again. In the war between Z Burger and Five Guys, I think I have to take Z Burger's side. The burger is delicious! It tastes a lot like an In N Out burger. This is no surprise since they both go for the never-frozen beef, fresh vegetable, fresh bun model. It's great! The shakes are incredible as well--better than In N Out, and obviously better than Five Guys since Five Guys won't stoop to serving a milkshake with their burger. But what's the point of a burger without a shake? Move over Five Guys, a real burger joint is in town. The one disappointment was the onion rings. I know lots of people are raving about them, but I thought they were gross. They are battered, not breaded, making for a gooey, thick consistency made up of more batter than onion. No thank you! So I dont like giving bad reviews because it brings up my angry side which I am not too fond of but nothing fires up my belly (in bad way not the metabolic way) more than bad service and people who are rude. This time the guy take me order and rips my credit card right out of my hand , literally swipes it out of my hand without me offering any kind of gesture that the transaction was complete. No thank you. Just rips it. He is so grossly rude and innapprprpate the way he looks at women and it just ruins the appetite to deal with it. As for the onion rings, they also made me sick. I think there is something in batter that did it or perhaps batter was old. The man who made them was so nice and hard working as is most of staff i am sure. Our journey to the one and only Z Burger wasn't a spur of the moment scheme. This was a well-planned out assault discussed on a late Saturday night in a dark watering hole in the District. For when we rise, we will dine like kings in Burgerland. Dilly Dilly! We knew nothing could satisfy this hankering like a hand crafted loaded Double Bacon Cheeseburger from Z Burger. When it was show time, it was just as we planned and expected. Clean, quick and attentive service, it is how I am treated every visit and is what has kept me coming back. The customer service makes me feel as I am the only one dining, but the room is packed and it's the primetime lunch rush for these hungry Washingtonians. The classic rock and roll on the speakers had me dancing through the line. As I ordered my burger to my liking, I was informed of the newest menu item, a Crispy Chicken Sandwich. I thought, could these guys really follow through with their dedication to quality with this new sandwich? For the rock bottom price of $4.99? I wasn't going to wait to find out. I was then informed the Crispy Chicken sandwich comes with not just one crispy piece of chicken, but two. SOLD. My chicken sandwich was ready before I was. I still wasn't mentally prepared for this journey I was about to embark on. The sheer size of this sandwich made me wonder, am I stealing? Is this my order? Is this the sandwich I traded just 5 American dollars for? (tax not included) The first bite made me wonder, do I need to call my priest? The second bite, the pope. After the third bite, I was down on my knees begging Jesus Christ himself for forgiveness. The tenderness of the never frozen chicken rocked my world. I was full of chicken and guilt halfway through. I knew I had been on the winning end of this barter. This sandwich is packed with everything you would want in a Crispy Chicken Sandwich. A fresh baked, soft, toasted bun. Crisp and juicy pickles. The sandwich has just the right amount of spice, which makes everything nice. Now, don't let the dressing take away from the real champion of this sandwich, the chicken. I received the inside, possibly secret, details of the preparation of each and every chicken patty. If I recall correctly, each never frozen chicken breast is marinated for 24 hours in over 20 different herbs and spices. Imagine how you might feel after spending 24 hours at the spa. That is how good your two chicken breasts have it, as they wait for you to make the smartest investment of your life. Z Burger has proven they are the kings of Burgerland, but now we know who the prince is. I look forward too many more pleasurable experiences with our friends at Z Burger. Definitely not as good as Five Guys and not worth the price at all. The ingredients were all fresh, but the burger really was nothing special. After taking my first bite, a giant piece of my burger patty fell off from the opposite side of the burger. Fries were decent, not too greasy, but Five Guys' cajun fries are far superior. A regular cheeseburger was $4.59, regular fries were $2.99 plus $1.89 for a drink came out to $10.42 with tax. Two weeks ago when I was in California, I had a better quality double-cheeseburger with fries and drink for only $6.50 with tax. Paying $4 more for something of lower quality is hard to stomach. I dislike how places like Five Guys and Z Burger charge you $3+ for a "regular" order of fries which would are so large that they would likely cause one to have a heart attack if they ate the entire order. One regular order of fries is easily enough for three people. There should be a half-order or fries available, it's both a waste of food and a waste of money. Boo! Speaking of being wasteful, I was appalled that my single burger and fries for dine-in came in a giant bag with handles, with another regular-size bad inside of it that contained a bucket of french fries. More than harming my wallet, I feel like I'm harming the environment by eating here. Why not just use one bag like Five Guys, or even better just use a tray like In-N-Out or most other fast food restaurants for customers who are dining in? The styrofoam cups don't help either. They may be a little pricier than the meals you can get at traditional fast food restaurants, but the quality of their food is worth it! This is hands-down the greatest burger place in DC. My family and I go there often, and it is our kids' favorite restaurant. The burgers are amazing, as are the onion rings and fries. And don't even get me started on the milkshakes, of which there are something like more than 50 varieties. This isn't fast food. It's a great burger joint in the best meaning of the phrase. The staff is terrific, and I have to give a special shout out to the guy who just recently started making milkshakes with more panache that I've ever seen anybody make a milkshake. I love burgers and fries. It's one of my favorite things of eat and you really can't beat a well cooked burger and hot french fries right out of the fryer. I came here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon and it was pretty crowded. It also didn't help that their credit card machine was down and were only taking cash for orders. Nevertheless I got a since bacon cheeseburger and my bf and I shared a side of regular fries. This place is great because you can get all the toppings that you want free of cost. Sadly I am not adventurous when it comes to toppings so I simply added barbecue sauce. My bf on the other hand and he will get the works on his burgers. A regular order of fries is A LOT and between the two of us we weren't able to finish it. The prices here are reasonable as well with all of our food costing about $16, which I think is good. They are also known for their milkshakes. This time I didn't get a milkshake but I get one the next time to check out what all the hype is about! This place is close to the AU Tenleytown campus so you will find a lot of college students hanging out. But regardless of the patrons a good burger is a good burger. read more

This place probably doesn't really deserve a full 5 stars -- but I can't give it 4 1/2, and I gave Five Guys 4. The menu is a virtual clone of Five Guys', burgers, hot dogs, and fries (their own style or Cajun-seasoned), though they also have Philadelphia cheese steaks, and their burgers and fries are about the same as Five Guys' (the burgers, I think, are a bit smaller, but also a bit tastier), so why do I want to give this place another star? In a word, SHAKES. This place has FIFTY different flavors of shakes, including such exotic ones as amaretto and maple walnut, and I don't know of any other place with so much variety. And although when I first came here they didn't use enough syrup in the shakes, the amaretto shake I had yesterday was so delicious, I'm sure they've discovered the way to do it now. Ah, the great burger war between Z-Burger and Five Guys continues its path of destruction leaving nothing but pieces of tin foil with globs of leftover mayo and bags from fries that are so greasy that they are clear in its wake. These are both great burger places, but my vote has to go to Z-Burger. The burgers at Z are slightly tastier in my opinion and not as squished and greasy. At Five Guys, they pack your burgers so tight into those pieces of tin foil that then when you go to eat it you have an incredibly dense tiny burger. The bun at Z felt a little fluffier, and less like "balloon bread". I guess, a double cheeseburger at Z-Burger just feels more like a traditional burger to me. I find that a bigger difference in the two places comes in the fries. Five Guy's fries are delicious but tend to be soggy. I'm a fan of crispier fries, which seems to be one of Z-burger's strong suits. Also I find that the canjun fries at Five Guys are seasoned fairly lightly with standard medium spice seasonings. I find that I still want to put vinegar on them or use ketchup. At Z-burger, the seasoned fries are outstanding and are great by themselves without any vinegar or ketchup. These are both great places and you're not making a mistake going to either. The difference is I would give Z-Burger 4.25 stars and I would give Five Guys 4 stars. read more

This has become my go-to place after a bender the previous night and tonight was no exception. There's just something about the combo of grease, messy burgers and a Diet Coke that hits the spot. The burgers here are great - always moist, cheesy and gooey - and come with a lot of toppings as standard, including onions, mushrooms and pickles. Good deal. Plus there are more toppings you can get for free and a few premium ones. The onion rings are out of control here. I have yet to actually finish an order, not because of taste but lack of sheer willpower to push my stomach that far. Every time I've ordered them, the rings come out piping hot and cripsy with fun little jagged onion ring jags, nooks and crannies - the mark of homemade onion rings. I've never been to Z-Burger in non-post-drinking mode, but I anticipate my willpower will fail me again at some point. I purchased the $7 Living Social deal for $15 worth of food at Z-Burger. Picked the wrong location and was kind of irritated that the "fine print" prevented me from going to the Glover Park location which is nearer to my home. However, it was my mistake. I definitely enjoyed the food, although my need to use up the whole deal caused me to over eat in a massive way ... I had the double cheese burger, 1/2 fries 1/2 onion rings side, and a large strawberry shake all of which came in right above the $15 deal. Huge amount of food. Highlights: Burger itself was very large and sloppy with all the "standard" ingredients. Enjoyed it very much although if I go again I would have a single hamburger which would be more than enough and I didn't really care for the cheese used. Fries were very similar to Five Guys fries - solid and very good. Onion rings were outstanding. Shake was just alright - it was extremely sweet and I would not find value in it at a price of $4.59. Much inferior to a Chick-fil-a shake, as a reference point. Overall, it was a heck of a deal for a little over seven bucks. And I think the place is a good value since the price of the burger itself is less than Ray's Hellburger, Five Guys, and Big Buns. It was a good thing the location was far from my home as it gave me an opportunity to recover from my food coma as I opted to walk four miles home rather than take the metro back. Serviceable alternative to Five Guys, and just as good - in fact, burger and fries-wise, barely distinguishable. I haven't investigated the other sandwich alternatives, but I get their burgers on a semi-regular basis, and they are generically representative of the thick, greasy, griddled, though unseared variety, which has its place in the pantheon of burgers in the same way that different types of pizza enjoy relatively non-hierarchical, concurrent status. Good choice of toppings, but I tend to be a purist, and usually go for the "Z Sauce" and maybe onions, although Z-Burger's (available either raw or grilled) are diced, where I prefer thin-sliced rings. Burgers are best wrapped in waxed or butcher's paper, with foil maybe on the outside to hold in heat, but Z-Burger only goes for a skimpy piece of foil, which not only offers zero structural protection, but, owing to its size, also assures that the bun gets squished. The bun itself is seeded and acceptable, but not distinguished. Fries are just the way I like them - dense, well-browned and relatively limp - although, as with Five Guys, unless I'm dining with someone, I am given no alternative but to pay for fries for two (at least) and throw half of them out. Z-Burger offers fries either "seasoned" or "Z-Style", where Z-Style means just salted - an option confusingly unworthy of trademark distinction. Their onion rings, sadly, are not great - battered and heavy. The lightly-floured, crispy variety would be just the ticket here. Shakes are too small for their price, and uneven. Consistency is good, but a lot of the flavors utilize Italian latte-type syrups when they could be much better with real ingredients. I got a caramel one once, and it tasted as if it contained about half a bottle of caramel syrup (no real caramel) - literally undrinkable. I generally stick with a chocolate variety or my favorite, peanut butter, which they do well. The place is well-managed and adequately staffed, even when busy. It is architecturally pleasing while sturdy, and the well-designed, all-weather dine-in areas are a commendable plus. read more
