I actually had to create a Yelp account because I felt I had to leave a review. I just moved here recently from the East Coast. I popped in one day to try the pizza. I asked for a slice of cheese, and if they could just warm it up a little bit. They left it in for a very long time and it came out super hot. Burn the top inside of my mouth a bit, But everyone makes mistakes so that was fine. What was not fine is when I gave them a $10 bill to pay for my one slice of pizza that cost $6!!, The guy asked me if I wanted change back. I was a little bit taken back because the slice was to go, and I didn't even want it wrapped. Sure, I might leave a dollar or some extra change for a slice of pizza, but who the hell likes to feel hustled like that. So the pizza is not very good. I would give it maybe a 2.5 out of 5 stars. This is such a wonderful and special place. I used to live somewhat in the area and when I moved I had forgotten to bookmark it, so I couldn't remember it until we drove by in an uber on my fast weekend trip. The pizza is delicious and they are so kind. Even when it's extremely busy the find time to make your visit pleasant. We ordered 3 slices and a salad (they split the salad up for us in generous portions and we were thrilled). The pizza is so good, not greasy or mushy and the atmosphere is lovely and exciting especially on a busy night. Prices are more than affordable especially for the quality. There are places to sit (a bar and some tables) but you may end up needing to sit outside on a stoop to eat your slice. Overall, ten outta ten and won't break the bank. Delicious!! read more

Ordered for pick up on a busy Saturday night and it was ready in around 30 minutes. We were going to do delivery but we were told it would take an hour. On the bright side, they did say delivery is free! The inside is pretty small and hot. We picked up the pizzas and they were HUGE! It is easily one of the top spots on my list. My favorite is the Potesto. It is topped with roasted potatoes and roasted garlic, with a fresh pesto as the sauce. It is rich, comforting, and packed with flavor. My second favorite is the Vincent Van Dough. This one is made with tomatoes, basil, and roasted garlic. It was love at first bite when I first tried it about 20 years ago, and the flavor is still just as good today. I usually add chicken to this, but today is I ordered just as how it is. Prices for a whole pie have gone up a bit over the past years, but you can still get a large pie for around $35, which comes with eight big slices. If you are ever in the neighborhood, or simply craving a solid New York style pizza, this place is definitely worth a try. They actually stopped taking new orders right after mine because they were fully booked with orders for the next three hours. That says a lot about how popular this neighborhood gem is. read more

It wasn't terrible but not good. The crust doesn't have a solid texture, crunch or softness of a great Za. There's not much sauce and the cheese isn't stringy. The ingredients in general were a bit too bland for my taste. As soon as you need ranch/sauce to enjoy a pizza, you realize it's not a good pizza - and at $30 for a medium pizza it might not be worth it, especially with all the great options nearby in north beach. Za pizza is a neighborhood gem. Located in a real sweet spot where you can't get a slice anywhere else in the area. Za does solid Za. Plain and simple. It's not going to knock you off your feet but you are going to be very aware that you are eating tasty pizza. I got the Da Vinci palate recently and oddly enough it does look like an original Da Vinci if you squint when you're looking at it. A real piece of art. They go real heavy on the toppings here. It's hard to complain about that, but I liked the sauce so much that it didn't get to stand out as much amongst the 43 pounds of toppings. Also, with so many toppings it's hard for the structural integrity of the pizza to stand up upon pick up. But who am I to complain about too many toppings? That sounds absurd. So pizza in Cali has a cap at 4/5 this gets a solid 3.2 for me. When I'm in SF this is one of the spots I always visit as it's a local joint with a great vibe. The pizza has quality toppings from the meat, to the cheese, and the crust. I enjoy the full pie but for some reason ordering the slice gives the pizza a better stiffer undercarriage. Za's is great but can definitely be busy even midweek around dinner time. We stopped by to grab some pizza, beer, and salad. We stepped in line to order but it tool quite awhile to even order with a few parties ahead of us. Some of the customers were camping out at the tables as well post meal. Yes they have crayons if you want to get your color on. But then another group took our table, they didn't know we had been waiting for it. We ended up sitting at the bar because of this which is okay but not ideal. Onto the food. It took awhile to get our food and I was heading to a concert after. We had left plenty of time to grab pizza but due to the delay in ordering and receiving food it took more time than you would think. They have seasonal offerings for pizza which is fun. We tried two different kinds and both were good. One had squash blossoms and one was spicy. We shared a salad and they split it up for us which was super nice. I was in town for the weekend and decided I wanted pizza for lunch so I spent about 90 minutes looking online for the "best slice" in SF. I narrowed it down from 10 to 5 to 3 and ended up at Za. And, I'm pretty impressed with myself, because it proved to be an excellent decision. First, the owner has a big personality, and greets everyone and makes them feel welcomed. I had a Caesar salad, which was very large and incredibly fresh. Then I had my usual... A slice of plain cheese pizza. I am originally from the East Coast and I just like it plain no toppings. Why is it that the simple things in life can be some of the best things in life? Frills and hype don't necessarily equal greatness. We sure found that to be the case at "Za Pizza." Either their pizza/people combo beckons you here or you simply pass right on by their humble establishment. While I was attempting to secure one of the aforementioned tables outside, he was apparently chatting it up with my wife inside. When he met me outside he said he didn't realize the weather was so nice today and that I must have brought the nice weather with me from San Diego. When I asked how he knew where I am from he said, "Your daughter told me when I met her inside." Came here around 7pm on a Thursday and this place was popping! Super long line full of locals so that was a good sign. As I was ooching closer to the front of the line they announced that the only single slices they had left were the potesto, and when I got to the front they told me they ran out of single slices all together. Ultimately I ended up ordering a medium pizza 1/2 pepperoni, 1/2 potesto. Took about 20 minutes to make. The pepperoni was salty and satisfying. We stopped by for a late night slice, and I really wasn't expecting the store to be cool as it was! A super local spot, with tons of children doodles all over the walls. We got a sausage scallion slice, and overall it was good. Super crispy, almost cracker style crust, so basically no chew whatsoever. The crust basically serves as a way to deliver the cheese, sauce, and toppings to your mouth. Not quite my style; I prefer the dough to have a bit more chew and flavor to it. Everything was pretty good; the sausage had a bit of a gamey taste which threw me off a bit.
