This place has an old fashioned pizza parlor feel to it. Clearly loves by locals, it was cheerfully busy on a Saturday afternoon. They easily accommodated our party of 6 and were nice about the fact that we had a baby with us. We order 2 extra large pizzas and an arugula salad (excellent, by the way). Everything was delicious and we would come back.
Apartment hunting made me pretty hungry, so stopping at Zachary's came in clutch. Grabbed one of the lunch slices and it was yummy. This area of rock ridge is pretty cute and conveniently located near Bart. Nothing like a cheap and easy pizza lunch. I especially enjoyed that the toppings were underneath the cheese.
It's been over 30 years since my first time here. The deep dish pizza is pretty much the same as I remembered it. Crunchy crust, loaded with meat and cheese and covered under savory and thick tomato sauce. We went to town with two large pizzas split so we basically had four different pizza varieties. As a meat lover my favorite was the carne. Friendly service and fair prices. Can't wait to return again.
A friend recommended this spot as one of the best pizza places in Oakland, so I stopped by before heading to Trader Joe's next door to grab a slice of cheese pizza. The slice was generously sized and reasonably priced, but overall, I thought it was just okay. I wasn't a big fan of the crust. Maybe next time I'll give their deep-dish pizza a try.
Zachary's makes the best pizza in the world according to my good friend who travels the world and eats pizza everywhere. We have enjoyed Zachary's pizza for decades. Our favorite is the large stuffed double cheese pizza. The cheese is so thick and stretchy that when brought to the table and a slice raised above the table, the cheese will stretch over 5 feet high. The pizza is delicious. This location is only a block from the Rockridge BART station.
Delish THICK pizza that hubby enjoys and one of the few spots we have been that had anchovies available for our little dude. The Caesar salad was chefs kiss and I wish I had ordered the family size. They boast about natural and great ingredients and they did not lie. We could only finish a slice a piece but it was well worth waddling out of the store. Service was meh but friendly ( we had to ask for refills and the drinks came back with no ice on a hot day so turned warm and tepid real quick)
I'm down here in Oakland along College Ave at the original Zachary's pizza. This is about the most iconic pizza place serving a unique to the Bay Area at the time kind of pizza. Chicago Deep Dish Pizza! Since it's inception, this place has super grown on popularity, like there's always almost a wait to get in. The original owners have since left the business and it's been made in to an employee owned co-op. As far as the pizza goes, nothing has changed ... well except for the prices, but what hasn't? This deep dish pizza is a little different than the real Chicago deep dish like what you actually get in Chicago. I actually like this west coast version better. The crust is the main difference. Here at Zachary's they don't use so much corn meal in the crust and the crust is more flaky and pastry like. I like this way better then the "real" Chicago stuff I've had. One version of the real Chicago pizza has a solid disk of sausage on the bottom the the pizza ... they don't do that here. After waiting to get in, the deep dish will take 45 minutes to make and cook, so you might as well get some salads or drinks while you wait. Service is fast and efficient. We went with the Zachary's classic combo pizza. When it came out our server dished out the first slices. Wow, I can tell she's done this a lot before by how she moved and sliced off the cheese stretch! I gotta say this is the best deep dish pizza I've ever had. With that first bite, I can tell that cloud of happiness descends down upon my head as I close my eyes and feel that wonderful pizza in my mouth! This is the best and the original location. Too bad parking is a pain around here! We'll try the Berkeley location on Solono next!
I can't believe I never wrote a review for Zachary's! This is one of my favorite pizza places in the Bay Area, and is a Rockridge staple just a block away from Rockridge BART and across the street on the corner from Trader Joe's. I can't imagine College Avenue without Zachary's! Their deep dish pizza is the draw that makes them stand out among other pizza establishments. Ambiance is laid back and cozy, with large windows looking out in College Ave. Service is awesome. The staff is very friendly. It talks roughly half an hour for them to bake the pizzas, so hopefully whoever you're coming with are great conversation partners. It does get crowded during peak hours, but I've been lucky to come here with plenty of seating.
Tried the Pizza Blanca which states it was a thin style pizza but seems to be standard crust. I assume thin for Chicago style is in comparison to their deep dish so I get it! This pizza had garlic, fresh herb and was olive oil base topped with mozzarella and ricotta de latte cheeses, garnished with fresh lemon. If you love ricotta and lemon you'll love this one. It was light and lovely. Lots of cornmeal on the good crust. Bomb house made ranch with herbs. I look forward to trying other pizza flavors.
I first discovered this well-known East Bay institution at their location on Solano Avenue when I was an undergrad at Cal. Revisiting this pizza was a triumphant return for my tastebuds. Zachary's is a comfortable, casual spot with great food & fun pizza art from contest winners displayed on the walls. This corner location is close to a Trader Joe's with metered street parking. It's clean & bright with a window view of the neighborhood shops. Tables are set with plates, forks & knives, napkins, parmesan, red pepper flakes, & oregano. Pizzas are set on stools next to the tables. There is ample bar seating by the entry for quicker bites. Music plays in the background. Restrooms are located down a hall close to the entry & were satisfactorily maintained. We called our order in & it was ready & boxed at pick up. However, it was an early weekday evening & there were many tables available, so we were able to select a table & eat in. We were met with friendly & helpful staff. We ordered a small Thin Crust Pepperoni Pizza & a small Stuffed Carne. At first bite, little one literally burst into song about how "very delicious" her pizza was! (Gotta love that as a parent.) So many things to try to say to describe the tastes & textures... You instantly taste the quality of the ample ingredients. Each component--the crust, cheese, sauce, toppings--hold their own. Bites are packed with flavor & full of savoriness. These are hearty & very filling. The crust of the thin pizza is still substantial with a lot of cornmeal coating on the bottom. The crust of the stuffed is buttery with a crunch. The Carne had a good amount of meats without eating like it was meat overload or a salt bomb. The tomato sauce on the Stuffed is just glorious-- sauce has some sweetness, chunks have acidity, & it's all seasoned & bursting with such impactful flavor!!! Simply put, if you're a pizza fan, you need to stop here when in the area!
Located on the corner College avenue in Oakland. Near the Trader Joe's. -Street parking only, bit difficult due to many cool businesses along this Main Street. Ample dining tables with single booth seating avail. If you can, call ahead of time, for dine in as Deep dish takes about 30-40 minutes to bake. Deep dish pizza hits the spot when you are used to the "regular style " pizzas. And after 1.5 slice you should be good to go.
I've been coming to Zachary's for over 25 years since I was a student at Cal. It holds up: I was as excited to eat it last night as I was as a starving poor undergrad. The deep dish pizza is exceptional: we got the spinach and mushroom. The tomatoes in the sauce are fresh and ripe, with a nice light sweetness and tartness that cuts the thick and delicious cheese that stuffs the pizza. The crust is also memorable: it's buttery almost like a pie crust, but also crisp. We also got a very good Caesar salad, and a thin crust pizza that was also very good and featured a nice cornmeal crust. But if you come, get the deep dish.
I love Zachary's. It's a must everytime I come back home to visit. There's a place in Long Beach who has tried to knock off Zachary's, even down to the pizza art on the walls. But there is no comparison. This Zachary's is slightly bigger than the one at the top of Solano in Berkeley but it's always busy. I tried one of their non-alcoholic Fieldworks beers and it was pretty good. Although I haven't had a drink in 2 years so I'm not really sure what beer tastes like anymore. :) We ordered the Medium Stuffed Mediterranean ($37.40) and a Small Stuffed Good Health ($31.60). Plus a Spinach Salad with Mustard French to share ($17.25). Bacon on the side since one of my friend's is vegetarian. Of course everything was delicious. Of course we pigged out and fought over who got to take home the leftovers. Of course we had a delightful time catching up like old friends do, like no time has passed at all. read more
We came here last Saturday after being at the Memorial Stadium since 8:45AM. It was 1:30PM, so we were both very hungry. He told me ahead of time that he wanted to try this place. After carefully selecting the location that is convenient for us, we were fortunate to find parking less than a block away. You can order at the counter if you want but if you want to dine there, you will get seated, and order from the server. We had one server but it felt like all of them were helping us - refilling our drinks, bringing out our appetizers, serving our pizza, and everything. GREAT SERVICE! We ordered the meatballs and their rustic stuffed pizza. The pizza takes roughly 25-35 min. so be prepared to wait. This was perfect since we had leftovers. The meatballs were tender but still springy and juicy, the pizza was dense, heavy, and so savory. We ordered their stuffed so we expect it to be dense and heavy. The sauce was mildly tart. Not sure when we will return but it's a hit for both of us. read more

Hands down the best deep dish pizza in California. Or as they call it stuffed pizza. Take out or eat in, there is no wrong way to go here. If you eat in, grab a craft brew while you're enjoying your pizza as they have a nice little selection. They have slice deals for lunch tine and of course they also sell thin crust but the star of the show are the Chicago Style deep dish. They have a delicious hot link pizza with chopped cilantro and mozzarella. You can get the pizzas half baked and take them home to finish yourself as well! Zachary's is the best! read more

To be fair, if you like Chicago style, then you may rate it higher than me. But here's how I see it. We ordered Caesar salad, the Zachary's 10" stuffed, and one slice of cheese and sausage thin. Two of us. Thank goodness for the slice and salad because the stiffed took almost 40 minutes. The Caesar was very good. They have a nice. Albeit white garlicky, dressing and anchovies. Crisp lettuce. And the thin slice was pretty good, but the crust is pretty hard. Maybe in my head I was imagining it'd be like New York style since they called it "thin". But it was tasty. The stuffed was pretty for sure but the massive tomato is just not my thing. At least the tomatoes were on the sweet side, not sour at all. When you finally make your way to the crust, it's quite doughy. Tasty, but doughy. And filling! I only ate two pieces. We left with about half the 10" stuffed to go. The wait service was good. They were very nice and only the one pizza took forever. Everything else was quick. And I really like the ambiance. It's a nice pizza place/restaurant vibe. They also have a to go counter to order by the slice, or pies I'm sure. read more
This might be a hot take... but I wasn't that blown away by the food at Zachary's. However, aside from the food, amazing vibes and environment -- especially loved the art and history of the place! We ordered the Zachary's Special (stuffed) and Arugula Salad. Neither of the two wowed me. For the pizza, the tomato sauce was a bit sweeter than my liking. It may be because I remember the Chicago style pizza I had a couple of years ago in Chicago was saltier. Or I just forget what deep dish is supposed to taste like. Anyways, I loved the crust! Also, it felt like a relatively longer wait for the Chicago style pizza. I think that overall makes sense for deep dish. I want to come back to give some other pizzas another chance! I love the general ambiance and employee owned aspect! read more

We craved some hearty pizza on a chilly January evening and knew we had to drop by Zachary's in Rockridge. Walking in, you immediately sense it's a local favorite--it's warm, welcoming, and has a neighborhood vibe to it. And of course, it offers some fantastic deep dish pizza. Service: The staff here is always friendly, efficient, and attentive. After we entered, the front of house employee quickly greeted and seated us. After we sat, our server was on top of things, and she also served us the first slice when our pizza came out--a nice touch. Throughout the meal, she checked in just enough to make sure we were enjoying our experience. Salad: The salad portions for whatever reason are generally massive here and perfect for sharing. We split a single salad, and it was more than enough for two. We made the mistake of getting the next size up last time--it was humongous. This time we got the mixed greens with French mustard dressing, and it was solid. We recommend getting some greens to cut the heaviness of the pizza. Pizza: This is where Zachary's shines--especially the high-quality sauce. We could drink it, it's that good. With just the two of us, we ordered a small half-and-half, getting half Spinach Mushroom and half Zachary's Special. She loved the Spinach Mushroom the most, but I loved both equally :) The deep dish is phenomenal, easily among my favorites in the Bay. Drinks: The house white wine was a little flat but that's standard for a casual pizza spot. That said they do make up for it with huge pours (seriously, I think they gave me a 7oz serving, though not sure if it was a one-time thing). Their craft beer selection is small but well-curated, with options that pair perfectly with pizza. She opted for the light Kolsch, which went well with the meal. Pro Tips: - They do half-and-half pizzas, which is great for trying a variety of combinations. - A small is perfect for two with a single salad, but if you're feeling ravenous or want leftovers, go for a medium. - It's generally a bit cold inside, so bring a sweater or layers! Overall, Zachary's is a great local establishment that nails the food, service, and atmosphere. It's our go-to in Oakland! read more
Zachary's pizza has been my favorite pizza place for years. It's their sauce! So incredibly fresh and delicious. Their tomatoes taste like they're imported from Sicily Italy. Their deep dish is to die for as well but takes longer to make. I highly recommend trying their whole wheat, deep dish crust vegetarian with mushrooms and pesto. It is so good as a vegetarian pizza you don't even miss the meat. I've also had the Zachary's special as a deep dish and that is very good as well. But my favorite overall pizza is the Zachary special. Their Spinach salad is also very tasty and their croutons are garlicky and crunchy. At this location the service is great and your food comes out pretty fast. They feature local artist pictures of pizza and they are fun to admire as they switch them out. The vibes are casual and family friendly. They have street parking and a Trader Joe's parking lot near by. Can't say enough good things about Zachary's pizza. In my opinion they are a local legend when it comes to pies and especially in the East Bay! read more

It's a cozy location with great service and it serves good deep dish that's cheaper then booking a trip to Chi-town. My Overall Rating - 3 Stars Atmosphere - Zachary's is in quaint, cozy part of Oakland. The pedestrian friendly neighborhood welcomes you in. But inside Zachary's is showing its age. There's a dedicated space up front to place your order and a sizable dining room if you want to sit and eat. Plenty of tables and poster art but it feels a bit dated. 1/2 Star. Service - The entire staff was super nice, always smiling, and helpful. There are a few Zachary's in the area, but it feels more like a mom-and-pop shot. Nothing but excellent service. 1 Star. Food - The one feature I look for in a Chicago style deep dish pizza is the crust. Unfortunately, Zachary's lacked the buttery crust that packs rich flavor that cuts into the tangy/tart tomato sauce. The ingredients were high quality, the tomato sauce was thick, and the generous mozzarella cheese created the stringy pull away effect. The staff also served us our first slice, but I couldn't help but return to the crust. Two slices made me full, and we had plenty of leftovers. And while full and happy, I couldn't say I was satisfied. 1 Stars. Will I Return? - Probably not. If you're looking for a Chicago style deep dish pizza, Zachary's is your place in Oakland. But if I'm comparing it to Chicago style deep dish from pizza places from Chicago, it's just ok. 1/2 Star. read more

The sauce and the cheese are great. I experimented with the butternut squash. It's not bad but it almost felt as if I was eating super soft pieces of potatoes. My family got a regular type of pizza (deep dish - they loved it) and I got some of their sauce to add to mine as I felt it didn't have enough red sauce to make up for the starchy and goat cheese flavor. Getting past that the pizza was really good for what it was. While it wasn't ultimately to my personal liking I will say that I could enjoy it still. read more
I went here with some friends from out of town, and we had such a great time! We had a party of 8, and waited about 30-45 minutes before getting a table. There was a nice seating area for us to chill, and the waiters encouraged us to order prior so we would get our pizza immediately when seated! The place is super cozy, there are a lot of posters and plays into the wooden, surfer (?) aesthetic. We got three pizzas: Zachery's Special (Deep Dish), Thin Barbecue Chicken, and Thin Mediterranean. They all came out about 20-30 minutes after being seated. My favorite was the Barbecue Chicken, it was so flavorful and was not too heavy. I also asked the waiter what their favorite pizza was, and it was Barbecue Chicken too! I also like the Deep Dish, the sauce was fresh and every bite warms up your mouth. I didn't like the Mediterranean as much, I think it needed a bit more freshness, but I ordered it in the past with a smaller size and that was delicious. We ordered XL's for the thin pizza, and the crust was actually pretty thick still. I would recommend getting a smaller size thin pizza, because those have been delicious in the past. Overall, I had a great time and will be coming back to try their other items! read more
What's there to say that hasn't been said? It's the same consistency that it's been for 30+ years. The pizza here is as good as any deep dish spot in Chicago. I always opt for the chicken or the mushroom pizza. Next to cheeseboard, it's one of the best pizza places in the Bay. A must stop for pizza lovers. $12 corkage fee (BYO) - how can you go wrong? It seems less crowded these days then it was 20+ years ago. Most likely it's due to the UberEats/Netflix world in which we find ourselves living this day. Great spot, always fun. read more
Easily one of the best deep dish restaurants in the Bay Area! Can't get enough of their pies and they also have a great beer selection. It is a great location and right next to Bart. The staff is always very friendly and the service is excellent. You can't go wrong by coming here and you will not regret it! read more

It's great! The pepperoni regular crust pizza is probably on of my favorite regular pepperoni pizzas! My mom doesn't like deep dish, so we often get one deep dish and a regular, I'm never bothered by it, Tastes just as good!
