I love Zachary's. It's a must everytime I come back home to visit. There's a place in Long Beach who has tried to knock off Zachary's, even down to the pizza art on the walls. But there is no comparison. This Zachary's is slightly bigger than the one at the top of Solano in Berkeley but it's always busy. I tried one of their non-alcoholic Fieldworks beers and it was pretty good. Although I haven't had a drink in 2 years so I'm not really sure what beer tastes like anymore. :) We ordered the Medium Stuffed Mediterranean ($37.40) and a Small Stuffed Good Health ($31.60). Plus a Spinach Salad with Mustard French to share ($17.25). Bacon on the side since one of my friend's is vegetarian. Of course everything was delicious. Of course we pigged out and fought over who got to take home the leftovers. Of course we had a delightful time catching up like old friends do, like no time has passed at all.

I love Zachary's. Pizza is delicious and the staff are friendly . My family always order pizzas to go. We usually order the thin crust BYO. Tastes amazing! Ordered a large thin BYO with onion, sausage, pineapple, garlic and mushrooms. ( sooo good) Ordered a small thin Chicken special ( sooo goood ) My dad loves pineapple ,so I called in to ask for extra pineapple. The pizza looks pineapple-ly. Thank you! Been coming here for over 15 years and we will continue because there is no better pizza than Zachary's.

We came here last Saturday after being at the Memorial Stadium since 8:45AM. It was 1:30PM, so we were both very hungry. He told me ahead of time that he wanted to try this place. After carefully selecting the location that is convenient for us, we were fortunate to find parking less than a block away. You can order at the counter if you want but if you want to dine there, you will get seated, and order from the server. We had one server but it felt like all of them were helping us - refilling our drinks, bringing out our appetizers, serving our pizza, and everything. GREAT SERVICE! We ordered the meatballs and their rustic stuffed pizza. The pizza takes roughly 25-35 min. so be prepared to wait. This was perfect since we had leftovers. The meatballs were tender but still springy and juicy, the pizza was dense, heavy, and so savory. We ordered their stuffed so we expect it to be dense and heavy. The sauce was mildly tart. Not sure when we will return but it's a hit for both of us.

This place has an old fashioned pizza parlor feel to it. Clearly loves by locals, it was cheerfully busy on a Saturday afternoon. They easily accommodated our party of 6 and were nice about the fact that we had a baby with us. We order 2 extra large pizzas and an arugula salad (excellent, by the way). Everything was delicious and we would come back.

Apartment hunting made me pretty hungry, so stopping at Zachary's came in clutch. Grabbed one of the lunch slices and it was yummy. This area of rock ridge is pretty cute and conveniently located near Bart. Nothing like a cheap and easy pizza lunch. I especially enjoyed that the toppings were underneath the cheese.

After our random fish trip we got hungry and I have been craving Chicago deep dish pizza for a while now. I am absolutely glad I came here. The pizza was EXACTLY what I wanted in a deep dish pizza. The guy with the curly hair glasses I think named gerard ? So sorry if it's wrong .. absolutely amazing service. His service and the food is definitely going to bring me back again! The inside is very laid back and creative. For it being a "pizza joint" it's actually very quiet. Not to loud. Let's just say I will make a 2 hour drive down here just for the pizza and service !

Zachary's makes the best pizza in the world according to my good friend who travels the world and eats pizza everywhere. We have enjoyed Zachary's pizza for decades. Our favorite is the large stuffed double cheese pizza. The cheese is so thick and stretchy that when brought to the table and a slice raised above the table, the cheese will stretch over 5 feet high. The pizza is delicious. This location is only a block from the Rockridge BART station.

well....Zachary's huh...Zachary's what more can you say ? Unique & it's delicious. Sometimes I get a mini deep dish 2/salad on the lunch special. It's divine and consistent throughout the locations

It's been over 30 years since my first time here. The deep dish pizza is pretty much the same as I remembered it. Crunchy crust, loaded with meat and cheese and covered under savory and thick tomato sauce. We went to town with two large pizzas split so we basically had four different pizza varieties. As a meat lover my favorite was the carne. Friendly service and fair prices. Can't wait to return again.

A friend recommended this spot as one of the best pizza places in Oakland, so I stopped by before heading to Trader Joe's next door to grab a slice of cheese pizza. The slice was generously sized and reasonably priced, but overall, I thought it was just okay. I wasn't a big fan of the crust. Maybe next time I'll give their deep-dish pizza a try.

I'm down here in Oakland along College Ave at the original Zachary's pizza. This is about the most iconic pizza place serving a unique to the Bay Area at the time kind of pizza. Chicago Deep Dish Pizza! Since it's inception, this place has super grown on popularity, like there's always almost a wait to get in. The original owners have since left the business and it's been made in to an employee owned co-op. As far as the pizza goes, nothing has changed ... well except for the prices, but what hasn't? This deep dish pizza is a little different than the real Chicago deep dish like what you actually get in Chicago. I actually like this west coast version better. The crust is the main difference. Here at Zachary's they don't use so much corn meal in the crust and the crust is more flaky and pastry like. I like this way better then the "real" Chicago stuff I've had. One version of the real Chicago pizza has a solid disk of sausage on the bottom the the pizza ... they don't do that here. After waiting to get in, the deep dish will take 45 minutes to make and cook, so you might as well get some salads or drinks while you wait. Service is fast and efficient. We went with the Zachary's classic combo pizza. When it came out our server dished out the first slices. Wow, I can tell she's done this a lot before by how she moved and sliced off the cheese stretch! I gotta say this is the best deep dish pizza I've ever had. With that first bite, I can tell that cloud of happiness descends down upon my head as I close my eyes and feel that wonderful pizza in my mouth! This is the best and the original location. Too bad parking is a pain around here! We'll try the Berkeley location on Solono next!

I can't believe I never wrote a review for Zachary's! This is one of my favorite pizza places in the Bay Area, and is a Rockridge staple just a block away from Rockridge BART and across the street on the corner from Trader Joe's. I can't imagine College Avenue without Zachary's! Their deep dish pizza is the draw that makes them stand out among other pizza establishments. Ambiance is laid back and cozy, with large windows looking out in College Ave. Service is awesome. The staff is very friendly. It talks roughly half an hour for them to bake the pizzas, so hopefully whoever you're coming with are great conversation partners. It does get crowded during peak hours, but I've been lucky to come here with plenty of seating.

Tried a stuffed spinach and cheese pizza slice (EXCELLENT) which was a special for the day, and also their pepperoni thin slice. The thin slice was okay but I think their stuffed slice is where it's at. Plenty of seating inside and love that they serve slices and not just whole pies. Casual atmosphere. Friendly service. I would come back!

Hi, thanks for asking. We use Follow Your Heart vegan cheese.

I just wanna know how many slices does it have the small one?

Hi Stephany, Our small pizzas are cut into 6 slices. Hope this helps!…

What do you think about their regular crust pizza?

At least I got to go a couple times before they closed and was able to try all the unique flavors that I wanted to try. The first time I went was with my family. We got a whole Ube pizza. The taste was good, and love the uniqueness of it. Even the dough is purple! There weren't that many people there when we went, so the service was quick. My second visit was closing weekend with a group of friends. I got to try two more flavors recommended by the server during my first visit - blackberry and longanisa. Both were very good in different ways. I think I preferred the blackberry slightly over longanisa. They had a lot of take out orders that day, and we got the last white dough (there were still Ube). Good thing we got what we got. Even though they were super busy, the service was still quick and pizza came out fast. I heard they opened up again in San Francisco but for take out only. So glad they reopened because after having the amazing pizzas right before they closed on Oakland, my friends and I were sad that we didn't go sooner. Can't wait to try again in the future.

Miso mushroom - new to me, savory and bright flavor. Yuzu and lemon acidity cuts into the savory of the mushroom and miso. Might be one of my new favorites. Soppresata - an OG item on the menu and one of my favorites. Simple classic pizza with soppresata topped with scallions and honey. Savory, sweet. The honey is perfect on this pizza. Longanisa - Filipino inspired with longanisa, baked egg, and tomato. Savory and sweet. Heaviest of the three pizzas. Comes with a side of sweet vinegar to drizzle on top. All three of these pizzas easily are favorites for me. They're super large and best to share with 2-3 people. All thin crust. 6 of us had these three pizzas and were able to finish it but were super stuffed. Wishing the best to Jeff and Spinning Dough's next adventure.

Their pizzas are already reliably delicious, but this deal is genuinely outstanding value since you get a large 18" pizza, your choice of a Caesar or dinner salad, and four very large sea salt chocolate chip cookies, all for $35. We grabbed two of these specials for a group of six and still had leftovers, so I'd say one combo easily feeds three people and could probably stretch to four as long as no one is absolutely starving. The pizzas themselves are ultra thin but still hold up structurally since you can lift and fold each slice without everything collapsing, which is exactly how I like to inhale my pizza. I personally wish the crust were just a touch more burnt and crackly on the edges, but even without that extra char, the flavor and bouncy chew of the dough were spot on. We ordered the Hot Italian and the Sausage & Roasted Garlic pies and absolutely loved both, especially the housemade sweet Italian sausage that appears on each, which is savory, slightly sweet, and super satisfying in every bite. Their house tomato sauce deserves its own shout out because it hits that ideal balance of sweetness and acidity and ties everything together perfectly. On the Sausage & Roasted Garlic it plays beautifully with the rich roasted garlic purée, and on the Hot Italian it stands up nicely to the Calabrian chilis and chili oil without getting lost. The sea salt chocolate chip cookies that come with the special are huge and packed with chocolate chips, and that little hit of salt really enhanced the flavors but the something about the texture was a bit off for me as it wasn't quite chewy or crumbly but rather something in between, which left me a little confused. Another big plus is that Violetta has a full bar so you can pair your meal with a beer, a glass of wine, or a cocktail to match whatever pie you are in the mood for. Between the quality of the ingredients, the thoughtfulness of the flavor combinations, and the generosity of the Restaurant Week deal, Pizzeria Violetta is an easy recommend and a spot I would happily return to with a group (or by myself with plenty of leftovers!).

I don't know why the pies cost so much, but they are only a few blocks from our place, so I want to support the few restaurants that set up shop in West Oakland. However, I'm starting to sour on this place. I don't mind overpaying for pizza; that's just edible, but on a few occasions, I've been appalled by what these folks try to get away with. A couple of months ago, they gave us a pie that was so burnt I had to call to complain, and they replaced it with a less burnt pie. Perhaps they don't know that extremely burnt food is full of carcinogens. This week, we ordered our usual 18-inch pie. This pie was a Frankenstein pie; half of it tasted like it had been sitting under the lamp all day. A telltale sign is how stiff the cheese is; the old dough feels as if I'm chewing on rubber, and the slices are stiff and salty overall, though some slices taste a bit fresher and crunchier. I was disappointed. If you're going to overcharge for mediocre pizza, the least you could do is give people what they are paying for. If I wanted old, stale pizza, I would've asked for the slices that sit under the lamp all day. Moving forward, if we order from this place, I will walk over, place the order, and wait for it, so we don't get cheated again. This place is a reminder of why certain restaurants often fail. The food is overpriced, and they are inconsistent with their service, if not disrespectful, in how they sometimes treat and feed their customers. We're not pigs; we just like eating the sweet little pig.
