I was originally recommended Artichoke Basille's after a concert in Berkeley, but the massive line scared me off. I finally made it back on a Saturday afternoon, and luckily, there was barely a wait! I ordered their famous Artichoke Pizza, and it definitely lives up to the hype. It's rich, flavorful, and they heat your slice back up right before serving, so it comes out piping hot. The only minor downside is that it's a bit oily (I had to use a few napkins to pat it down) but the flavor makes up for it. The setup is a quick grab-and-go counter service with some patio seating and standing tables outside. Artichokes is one of Berkeley's most popular late night food spots! They're open until 2am (Sun-Thurs) and 3am (Fri and Sat) making it a great spot to go to after a night out or if you're just craving pizza later in the night. The line does get pretty long on busy nights after big events like concerts, but it tends to move pretty fast. I've tried their Artichoke, Margherita, and Vodka slices which are all solid choices. Each of their slices are huge and great for the price of ~$8! Personally, I find their pizzas to be a bit on the heavier side with their generous amounts of sauce, but great if you're in the mood for some mouth-watering greasy saucy pizza. Conveniently located across the street from the Graduate, hotel and down the street from Top Dog. We were going to go to Blondies, but this just popped up next to us so we gave it a try. It's set up like Blondies, a counter with all the pizza's on display for you next to the cash register. I was surprised at how conscientious they are about cross contamination that they used a different pizza cutter with each pizza to do the initial slice off the pie. They had a few to choose from. Deep Dish Sicilian, sausage, probably peperoni, and artichoke with a white cream sauce. I almost got the artichoke, but I was afraid the cream sauce wouldn't agree with me so we got the one with basil and cheese on it. To be honest the pizzas don't look very appetizing just sitting there behind the counter. They are cold and have some grated cheese just on top of them. The slices also look small for $7.95. We picked out the basil with cheese slice and he slid it into the over. He asked if we wanted it in a box to go or on a plate. We opted for the plate as we were going to eat it right there at the walk up counter in front of the register. After about 4 minutes our pizza came out of the oven. He sliced it in 2 length wise and handed to us on a double plate as it was so long. Well, it looked bigger and much more appetizing after it came out of the oven. We each took a half, it was hot so we took our time. As it turns out the pizza was delicious. It was a very think crust and the cheese was gooey. I'm happy with our purchase. It was a good snack before we started our service project in downtown Berkeley. I recommend this pizza joint. The pizza is good size and comes out hot and delicious. It's creamy, buttery, savory from the artichokes, and topped with soft artichoke hearts. The crust is crispy yet chewy, and pairs harmoniously with their divine cream sauce. I also love their Margherita and Sausage pizza, but nothing beats the experience of tackling a slice of the creamy artichoke pizza at 1:30am. They also have a small area outdoors where you can sit and enjoy your pizza. By far my favorite grab and go pizza shop in Berkeley, and it's not even close. Artichokes is a college staple for Cal. Founded on the East Coast, the spot is one of the places you can find a traditional and authentic NY Slice! My fav piece, of course, is the artichoke. Tastes like eating hand held spinach artichoke dip. The sauce oozes from the crust and becomes this melty monster that I absolutely love. There are large slabs of fresh mozzarella, and a generous spread of artichoke hearts adorned on each slice. The slices are also the size of your head, so for about $8 you get stuff and happily satisfied. My second favorite is definitely the meatball slice. This competes for #1 at times for me. The meatballs are so so tender and flavorful. This beats sausage on pizza by a long shot. Delicious. The cheese gets perfectly melted and the tangy red tomato sauce is a perfect pairing. Truly delicious. You usually see lines out the door for this place starting at 9 pm. But don't be fooled, service is quick and easy! You order your slice, they heat it in their pizza ovens, and they call you! Matter of minutes, but for this flavor it would be worth any wait.
