We were visiting Dothan and while looking at Yelp for a restaurant, saw Zack's. Many years ago, I used to go there when they were located in Slocum Alabama and remembered their food was delicious. And this was delicious also. Friendly people. Very good food and it was topped off with pineapple cobbler - never had that before and it was so good. Very nice waitress. Amazing little place! First time here today and the gentleman at the front showed us what to do! Walked us to the back where they start the buffet line. I was shocked at first because the line was long but it moved fast! Amazing home cooked food! Will definitely eat here whenever we come to Dothan. Great staff. Super friendly. Zacks is consistently 5 stars every time we go. It's my go to lunch spot for family and friends. Friendly staff, generous portions, and OUTSTANDING FOOD makes for a great lunch. It's farm to table and you can tell by the popularity of the place that they're doing it right. I crave their country fried steak and fried green tomatoes every day. Lol To be honest, a disappointing lunch at a local place to my area here in Enterprise prompted me to write this review. Might just be me! The Zacks in Dothan will NOT be getting my business no more! I ordered a to go order and they left my desert out then my fish was Luke warm temp! The owner got on the phone and begins to explain how he doesn't see how the fish could even be cold then I told him about my desert was left out, he says oh those sort of things happen with to go orders! Well, I will gladly take my 11.00 to go money some where else next time! Not everyone is looking for a handout! This is a crazy fun place to eat! Cafeteria style place that is crazy packed all the time. The food is very good, although very "comforting" which means it will make you fat like most of the other people eating here. I love that there are all walks of life here with one thing in common; everyone seems to be enjoying themselves and the food. Definitely a fun place to come. If you like Southern salty flavorless food, this is the spot. Not a fan of this, so did not really like. The people were nice, but the food was bland and laden with salt. This is a hidden Gem. Since being in Dothan for a couple of months, we were told about Zacks. The first trip we had their fried chicken, absolutley wonderful. The best I've had, also had cabbage and mashed potatoes. Went back today after church and gained more weight with the favorite, country fried steak with white gravey. Man it was good. Theservers and attenants are so friendly and helpful. If ever in the Dothan area don't miss this great eatery. The only day they're closed os Saturday. read more

The food is sometimes not as good as some days. Too much sugar at times. Worst of all is the owner, Zack, he is one of the most horrible business owner's. I saw a guy complain about his food that wasn't completely cooked, and this Zack talked to this paying customer horrible. He told him that he didn't give a F***! My mother and I ate at the Zack's in Slocum and we were glad we stopped there, because the food was great and the service was wonderful. The only suggestion we have is to provide the names of the prepared dishes. Most of the dishes were obvious, especially to anyone who has eaten Southern cooking, but wasn't sure about whether one of the dishes was steak or pork chops. read more

Super busy only because its has really good food. They had an extensive menu that slightly changes every day of the week with traditional southern foods. There was a pretty long line. At first it was a bit confusing because it was buffet style but they dish it out for you , the service was extremely polite. Some of the food obviously is fried and fattening but Zacks gets a big pass and well worth the wait. I can say the fried chicken is now my in my top 3. Up north the sides at the soul foods places here are sloppy and always spilling over in the container. But their portions were actually very moderate enough for you to sample more than a few things from what they have to offer.Its super busy but a server consistently checks and makes sure you're okay and that your drinks are filled and your napkins are replaced. I noticed that even though it was super crowded the owners and some of the employees had a walkie-talkie system and there was a nice system in place so that people can get to their food in an organized matter.This pis definitely one place that I can 't miss my next visit here. Try the chicken the fried chicken and the cheddar biscuits for sure and obviously a large sweet tea. Its also farm to table. read more

2.5 stars would be my rating. Ate here thrice for lunch while working in Dothan for a couple of weeks (the folks i was working for controlled the repeats, not me). I hate when someone from another region critiques the food of a region they don't know anything about so i can tell you that if there's one type of food i DO know, it's southern country cooking as i have been cooking & eating it for 50 years. Here's my honest take on Zacks' food: First things first. I love eating at a campy place but i still expect it to be clean. Zac (sic) needs to give his cleaning crew a bucket of degreaser and let em have at it on the tables, chairs, and anything else they can get to 'cause this place is greasy! Keep your elbows off the table unless you consider grease a moisturizer. Here are the foods i had during my trips and what i thought about them compared to the same items i have eaten my whole life at home and at hundreds of places across the south. Country fried steak - bleh...not really steak but hamburger patty breaded and fried. Mushy on the inside and soggy on the outside. I like mine crispy chicken-fried on the outside and pounded-to-death tender on the inside. No amount of gravy could save this one. White Gravy - bland but edible and at least it wasn't too thick and was not lumpy. Fried Chicken - decent but bland and soggy in places. I don't like my chicken extra crispy necessarily but i do like it seasoned some. A bit of garlic powder, black pepper, salt and pinch of paprika or Cayenne in the coating and soaking the pieces in buttermilk for a couple of hours at least would help this a bunch. It wasn't bad, just not great. Breads - They gave me a little cardboard tray with a couple of pieces of bread in it at the end of the food line. One turned out to be a small, flat round piece of cornbread which was cold, tough, and tasteless except for the sugar. Keep the word "sugar" in mind because it will become a central theme when i get to the vegetables. The other nugget i am pretty sure was bread also but i have no idea what kind it was supposed to be. Cabbage - Steamed cabbage... i really couldn't detect any seasoning to speak of other than SUGAR. Man was it sweet and i don't mean in the "SWEEET!" way, i mean sweet like candy. Didn't taste any meat seasoning or even see any pepper specks, but if you like cabbage and sugar..... It was at least not overcooked or mushy. Collards - They said these were collards but they were chopped more like turnip greens to me but either way not enough smoked meat seasoning to bring out that awesome smoky flavor of collards and i did notice a tiny bit of fat on the surface for seasoning but once again the primary seasoning was, you guessed it,,, SUGAR. I occasionally have to add a pinch or two of sugar to greens when i get a slightly bitter mess of greens but whoa....Sugar Greens! Rutabagas - One of my favorites, either smashed with butter like potatoes or cubed into medium cubes and boiled then braised until just fork tender and seasoned with chicken broth and just a touch of pepper. These were cubed too small so they were very over cooked and, you guessed it again, SWEET SWEET SWEET. At first i wondered if they had given me candied yams by mistake but nope, just that much sugar in these too. The wonderful flavor of rutabagas ruined by way too much sugar. Fried Okra - frozen breaded okra fried. served cold. 'nuff said. Fried Green Tomatoes - too small of tomatoes and sliced too thin to have any of that wonderful tangy green tomato flavor. They were over cooked so they were mushy and didn't have that wonderful cooked but firm texture and the coating didn't stay on during frying mine were mostly bald. Fried catfish - Nice size whole cat on the bone like i like 'em but the coating that managed to stay on the fish was bland. I have seen this same symptom (fish loosing it's coating) at a lot of places and over the years i have figured out what causes it, the dredge used before coating the fish is too thin, and the temp of the grease is too hot. You have to fry whole fish longer and lower anyway to cook it through without burning the coating and it also keeps the batter on. They need to cook this at 325 degrees, no more, no less, not 375 degrees. All-in-all this was the best item i had there after i added some salt. Mixed kernel corn - white and yellow corn done pretty well. Again, too sugary for my taste but with corn i can tolerate it. Mashed Potatoes - don't even count my opinion here 'cause i am picky, picky, picky about my creamed 'taters. If they're whipped with a mixer to get them smooth i don't like them. If they aren't done with a potato ricer they are too starchy and mealy for me. These were OK but not awesome. Brown gravy - adequate gravy-mix gravy. Fried Chicken livers - Another one of my most favoritest foods - Over cooked and under seasoned and once again almost bald. Wished i had gotten the fried chicken again. All in all,OK but not outstanding read more

It is what it is so I guess in that regard maybe it deserves 5 stars. I think my body is still mad at me for eating here. Although I would never go back I'm glad I went the first time. I had pulled pork, turnip green, boiled cabbage, fried green tomatoes, cornbread & a salad (you can opt out of dessert for another veggie which is what I did). Zack's is a small family restaurant in an out of the way part of town. They usually have a long wait during peak lunch times, but it is well worth the wait. They have traditional southern cooking with great combinations of main courses and sides. The quality is great and so is the service. They even offer full trays and catering. Our first time was today. Right off the bat, we were fussed at about trying to go through the "wrong door." When we got inside, it was chaos. We had no idea where the line started, whether or not we needed to wait to be seated, etc. Since we have a toddler and my parents were with us, my wife found two tables and merged them and sat down. She was gonna keep our little one at the table. She was approached by the staff and embarrassed for "skipping ahead" of people and finding a table. There were no signs anywhere or staff telling folks in the line where to go or what the protocol was. They kept asking my wife very loudly and rudely, "What is this? You can't do that? Where will these people sit when they come through the line?" Needless to say, we left and won't ever go back. I was appalled by how they treated my wife.
