Newer is not always better. They have a beautiful new, very clean building. Health Dept score I saw was 97. Lots of staff and all working hard to take care of their customers. But, it was so disappointing! You now order from a menu at your table. The waitress was in too big a hurry to let us order all we wanted. I'm sure that saved us money, but didn't help Zach's sales. Monday was catfish. They don't mention that it was bone in and tasteless. Fried Okra was over cooked and tasteless. Mac and cheese could have come from a box. Tomatoes and okra was great! Choc pie was good too. If you can get the waitress to slow down enough to order it. Husband said country fried steak was good. As was mashed potatoes and green beans. Not great just good. Starting with Food; my wife and I had lunch and it was outstanding nothing more to say. Second the service was slow compaired to self service line of the past. I know this all about change, but it's not working at this time. Third, if I'm going to pay $29.89 for lunch I would like a real plate and utensils. Paper plates and plastic utensils is what one use on a picnic. Needles to say we were not satisfied with paper plates and plastic forks. The building and dining facility was very nice, but again paper plates, forks, and customer service you need to rethink. See you again in a few months when you reconsider paper wear. read more

The service was good friendly and helpful. The food was so so. I ordered the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese. Also Banana pudding. The meatloaf was in on the drier side and in pieces. The mashed potatoes were good. The Mac an cheese had no flavor. No seasoning on it. I didn't get my banana pudding. Today May 18 2025, in a first timer to Dothan and to this restaurant. It was self seating, I arrived at 10:55am and left at 11:15am. I sat at table 29 and in that 20 mins not one person stopped by to great me, ask for more order or acknowledge I was sitting there. The manager in jeans and a green stripped shirt, stopped at tables around me receiving food asking if they received everything they ordered, he Also stopped at his families table multiple times checking on them. I may have been 10 ft from them yet never acknowledged me. Food smelled great, seemed to be a good system as customers were receiving there food quickly however a I cannot expand on the quilts or flavor. Big disappointment for me today read more

The best fix for Southern country cookin' in Dothan! They're packed usually depending on what time of the hour you head there for lunch. Lines and queue are worth the wait. Once you get in you grab a tray(almost cafeteria style) and you pick your protein for the day along with 2-3 sides of your choosing. Anything extra can be added on also. Once you get to the table then you'll get a waitress that'll ask for your drink orders. Love the friendly atmosphere and the food is definitely worth it! Zack's food was amazing! I had the country fried steak and it was so tender and flavorful! It melted in my mouth it was so good. The sides I got was sweet potato casserole, macaroni and cheese, fried pickles and pecan pie. I loved the fried pickles and pecan pie! The Mac and cheese was kind of dry and the sweet potato casserole was ok. I tried some fried green tomatoes which were so good and the creamed corn was surprisingly good! The only problem with the place was that it was so busy! They try to be set up for it though. They have a zig zag line for people to wait in by going in the back door. It moves pretty fast but it was still about a 20-30 minute wait until we got our food. Then you pick your food in a cafeteria style line. This is a five star down-home country cooking experience for sure. It is served cafeteria style and in huge portions so don't worry about leaving hungry. It was voted best "meat and three" place in the state of Alabama recently. After-tax it is still less than $10 for a regular plate which includes a meat, three sides, a dessert, and a even a drink. You can trade the dessert for a salad or side. There are plenty of choices for everything. It's not like they just have fried chicken and one other thing to choose from for the meat. Last time I went they had fried chicken, beef tips, catfish, chicken fingers, or country fried steak to choose from. Plenty of variety for the sides as well. Oh my goodness, this place reminded me of spending time with my grandmother on Sunday . The fried chicken was juicy and crispy! The cabbage was perfect. I am from the area and gone to Zack's in Slocomb for years. I was glad to hear the first time that they were opening a location in Dothan. I have been to this location numerous times over the years, and never been disappointed. Zack's is the definition of great, down home, country cooking. I have only gone for Sunday at lunch. But I hear it is the same all the time (maybe a little worse on Sunday's). Crowded. Get there early or be prepared to wait. Which I always see as a good sign. I wish I could give a recommendation, but everything is so good. Chicken and dumplings, country fried steak, fried chicken...all incredible. My wife has even gotten that baked chicken and said it is fantastic. All veggies are great. I love the creamed corn and the butter beans are outstanding. Greens, mashed potatoes, dressing...you can't go wrong with the veggies either. Desserts are great. Along with the bread that comes with it. By the way, did I mention that you get a HUGE bang for your buck. The quantities for the price do not even measure up. Was in town meeting with the City of Dothan and was brought here, this is southern soul food at its finest. I had a salad, country fried steak with white gravy, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes with brown gravy, hush puppies & apple cobbler. The country fried steak was so tender you could cut it with a straw. Mashed potatoes were on point. Mac & Cheese was good not my favorite but I generally would never order this anyway. The hush puppies were perfect balls of fried goodness. Last but not least the apple cobbler made me wanna cry tears of joy after each bite. I'm usually not much on eating what I would call "home cooking" when I dine out(because I get that at home), but some friends picked the place and it wasn't disappointing! The line was stretched through the restaurant and almost to the back door, but the server promised it would move quickly....and it did. There must be 6 choices for meats and over a dozen for sides! I had a fried pork chop, Rutabaga, okra& tomatoes, baked sweet potato & fried green tomatoes. All very fresh and delicious!! There were about 6 options for dessert, which I passed up for another side. The helpings were plenty generous and I'd return for sure...even though it's good ole home cooking!
