Both my fiance and I truly enjoyed our special Valentine's Day dinner. We were greeted by the owner himself, who was extremely hospitable and interactive with all the guests. He led us to a quiet, candlelit table & we started off our night with their famous calamari -- super fresh and it was like having nostalgic bites of Monterey. I got the Chicken Zahir entree and my fiance got the Seafood entree, and they were both standout dishes. The Chicken Zahir entree was really prominent in its tender and juicy chicken, which I find hard to master personally, especially when it comes to breast. We also found our meal to be a fair price point given the quantity and quality of the dishes and attention to detail all around. I can't say enough good things about Zahir's. This is a family owned and ran bistro. The food is amazing and the staff is like family. I've come here enough to get to know Zahir himself, and he is all about his customers. If you have a chance to chat with him, I hope you get to hear some stories. Last night they opened up for a private party, our manager was retiring. Zahir drive home from his vacation so he could come say goodbye to a friend and customer. And the food. Wow. I had seafood risotto. It was so good. It came with 5 scallops, shrimp and 2 prices of salmon. So much food. The person next to me had steak Zahir. It was huge and looked amazing. I booked valentines day here with my significant other and was pretty disappointed overall. We each ordered a three course valentines prix fixe for $40. The first course consisted of a beet salad. There were only two slices of beets the size of half-dollars, and the presentation was sloppy, with beet juice smeared across one corner of the plate. I don't mind too much that the salad was small, but it tasted like a standard oil and vinegar salad. For the entree, my date ordered salmon and I ordered the new orleans chicken. They brought the order out wrong (a completely different dish), so I ate mine first. The sides of vegetable/rice were cold, like they had been sitting out for a while. The salmon came out hot and perfectly cooked, so I'm happy about that, but it came out long after I had finished my chicken. For dessert, we ordered a creme brulee and bread pudding. They came out and told us there was no more creme brulee, so we were stuck with two bread puddings. Initially, I was kind of glad to hear it because I loathe creme brulee. But when the bread pudding came out, I was very disappointed. It was half cold, half warm, like they had just taken some and microwaved it for a few seconds. I came here on valentines day hoping to have a great time, but left a little unhappy because of the way everything turned out. Perhaps it's because they had too many people on this occasion, but something I've learned is that good restaurants turn down people when they know they can't handle any more. Eventually, I'd like to give Zahir's another chance because I feel like they can do better. The restaurant was pretty empty then, and we were promptly seated upon our arrival. - the bread was really good, came out hot and it was crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside - The daily special New Zealand rack of lamb with peanut butter sauce was cooked perfectly - The temperature of prime ribs that we ordered seemed to be off... I wanted to like this place, and in a sense, I do...but if only.... We came here for lunch, wife and I, and we had Toscana soup and stuffed prawns for starters, followed by a Prime Rib Salad and Fillet Mignon as mains. Overall, the food tasted good, not 5 stars but close to a 4 star rating, but if only...more about it later. Service was attentive, if you could get their attention - it was a busy lunch hour - so much for the recession! I like our server, but if only .... The reservation I have about this restaurant is not the food nor the front service, but the overall approach to customer service. It started with the soup coming out about 10 mins before the stuffed prawns. I understand that soup is easier to make/serve, and stuffed prawns have to be stuffed and all, but not having the dishes come out at the same time makes the diners having to eat at different times.Not wanting to create a fuss I had my soup first before it got cold, and eventually the stuffed prawns came. In the middle of my wife eating her starters, I was told that my dish was ready and they wanted to serve me my dish ahead of my wife's. I asked that they waited and serve both the mains together. I understand the kitchen is busy and timing could have messed up but a restaurant supposedly at this level should not make the mistake twice. Strike one. However, when the mains eventually came out, the fillet Mignon was done very nicely and warm and all that, but the Prime Rib on the salad had gotten lukewarm and toughen up as meat would when they cool down. I noted this to the restaurant, and they did fix it by taking it back to warm the meat back up - after trying to explain to me that the meat would be dryer because it was grilled, blah, blah blah - a simple slight reheat of the meat would have done the trick, as was shown when the food came back out. The fact that they mistimed the dish and let the food sit out for 15 mins more before serving was the root cause, not because it was grilled! Strike two - trying to explain a mistake is a mistake - your customers are not new to cooking and eating steak! The biggest "if only" that got me was when we left, the owner (or manager, not sure) thanked us on the way out, but again tried to justify the whole thing about grilling vs roasting, etc, and then after being told about the "warming trick", disappointingly noted that he had to step out for a bit earlier, and things went downhill then ...maybe he meant it as a joke, but it is never nice to denigrate your staff in front of your customers - it reflects badly on the manager! Strike 3 - own up to issues, and fix the issues, the explanations to justify mistakes just leave a bad impression in the service industry. So food was good, service was OK when you get their attention, mistakes happen, but the response to the mistakes is what sets one apart. - it tries hard to be "upscale" but something intangible is missing in the whole experience of dining there - like missing a tiny bit of salt, or spice in the recipe, the dish served, looks good, tastes good but is missing the "oomph"... read more

Found this place on Yelp and came here with a friend for dinner one night. Nice place. Upon walking into the restaurant, we were greeted and seated right away. There were prob only 2 other couples there in the fairly big restaurant. The restaurant was a little dead for a Thursday night. The restaurant also had a smell that wasn't really pleasant...or it can be just me... I'm really sensitive to smell. Our waiter greeted us momentarily and asked us what we would like to drink and told us about their daily specials. He also made a few recommendations. We started out with the Cream of Artichoke soup and Fried Calamari. First time having the soup and I have to say that it was quite yummy. The cream wasn't too heavy and you can taste the artichoke flavor. The fried calamari was one of the best I've had. The batter they used to fried this was pretty flavorful and the calamaris were not chewy. Both highly recommended. I was about to order the Filet Mignon, but the waiter suggested that I order the Steak Zahir...Good recommendation. This dish was glazed with peppercorn sauce and served with a cone shape mash potatoes and grilled asparagus. The mash potatoes was lightly fried on the outside and was soft on the inside. Pretty unique and flavorful. The filet mignon was also one of the most tender filet mignon I had. When I took the first bite, the meat literally melted in my mouth.....YUMMY. I don't know if it was just the piece of meat I got or all their Filet Mignon was like that. Very good. My friend ordered the Artichoke Chicken. The chicken was moist and pretty tasty. This dish had a really strong taste of olives and I am not a big fan of olives... therefore, I didn't like the taste too much. The experience overall here was good. Our waiter checked on us often to make sure we are satisfy with our food and our waters were filled. He even had a few small conversation with us that made the experience more enjoyable. We had dinner at Zahir's on Oct 13th. It's been a few years since I last visited Zahirs but nothing much has changed. Dining area had a nice quiet room feel to it, perfect for a date, celebration or business meeting. The food was excellent! We started with the Cajun Prawns and clam chowder. The prawns were juicy, tender, and not very spicy. The chowder was creamy and not too salty as most restaurants chowder tend to be. My wife had the Chicken and Prawns ala Parga and I had the special of the day: Chilean Sea Bass; both served with vegetables and rice pilaf. I went for lunch and the new orleans chicken wasnt on the menu but they cooked it anyway for me. it was so nice and hot when it came to the table. the cream sauce was so good, rice was cooked perfectly with great flavor,the cooked spinach and bacon wrapped around the chicken was so tasty, the chicken cooked perfectly hot but still moist. and the filling of the mushrooms and sausage was very good as well. the veggie side dish was carrots and squash, i only ate the carrots. my mom didnt like the squash. she had the chinese chicken salad which i had some bites of and eventually finished off. it was very good too, it seemed the dressing was homemade which was good, it had a little spice to it at the end which i liked. the chicken was moist and well seasoned and tasty. so the food was very good. The inside is decorated very nicely, a little bit minimalistic, but u knew u were at a nice place. i kept getting my ice tea and water refilled. the waiter was cool. went on a tuesday at lunch at about 11:30. didnt get too crowded. Overall i would go back in a second, I want to try the filet mignon. but the new orleans chicken didnt disappoint and i would recommend. I would recommend this place for anyone looking for an upscale meal. They have a banquet room in the back for meetings or a party, maybe like a retirement party, could be for a b-day party, or a business meeting. there is a bar that looks very nice and is fully stocked. they are planning to have seating outside also at some point. It is a hidden restaurant in the area : I'm really pleased to have some good decent Italian restart in Milpitas. One plus, they have happy hour from 5-10pm if I recall correctly - with a drink menu and some bar food . There is a bar area and TV is avail. I came for a dinner before movie so didn't have time to check it out . We order some drink to start : Cosmo and the sauvignon white wine are just fine. Nothing too special but it does the job. Appetizer: there are not that many options but the portion is huge . We went for the fried calamari - decent quality , just like how you expect what it tastes like from a dine in. Entrée : Chicken Marsala - really good sauce over one good big piece of juicy chicken breast . I am really happy about it. The side of vegetable & pilaf are alright - not too impressive to my taste. Prim rib - per my boyfriend , it is 8 out of 10 as it is his dish. I took couple bites and it is definitely juicy and well season. Side dishes are alright: with the vegetable and croquette - the croquette is pear shape with a bunch of rosemary as garnish - cute ! Environment: they offer a dining area, a bar and super cute outdoor dining . Pretty nice and hidden spot in Milpitas . One more note: the bread is so fresh and great . Ok, reading a bunch of 5-star reviews makes me suspicious. Friends of the owner, family members, whatever. Happy to say I was wrong in this case. Unbelievably good food. And I say this as a former SF resident food snob. The food is innovative, well-proportioned, tasty, and just fantastic. Four of us had appetizers, salads, mains, and dessert, and everything was unbelievable (well, the dessert could have been better, but 3 out of 4 in San Jose?!), and usually a restaurant screws one of those up with the South Bay area managing to screw up 2-4 regularly--almost like they can't help themselves. Anyway, we've found our new foodie retreat. It's in the middle of nothing, far from chi-chi restaurants, where it's a jewel among gravel, but that only makes it shine more. Our special place. We ended up here on our first date after we ran away from Dave and busters. This place made the night great! I got the steak zahirs and it was simply amazing. We both got clam chowder for appetizer and, though it has more veggies than I like, it also had plenty of clam and a wonderful flavour. He had... Uhm.. Shrimp and noodles? I can't remember what it was called, but it was great. For dessert we had bread pudding. Since that night, we go every time we have a big celebration. We've never had a problem with service, and find everyone delightful. We've tried the prime rib and, though I found it a bit more fatty than I prefer, the taste was gread. Awesome customer service! I did a last minute birthday surprise for my husband and they were super accommodating! They let me decorate our table and even hang signs no the wall! It was a complete surprise for my husband. We have ordered numerous items on the menu and have always been pleased with the quality and taste of the food. A hidden gem - great for large groups or work functions. I found Zahir's Bistro on Yelp looking for a place for my work team holiday dinner. I have to admit I was worried driving over because it is not on the best street, but once I saw the beautiful old house it's in, I knew the place was nice. We were pleasantly surprised by the service and amenities. It's difficult to time meals for a party of 12, and they did a great job. We ordered everything from appetizers to wine to main courses to desserts. They were all delicious, especially the bruschetta, pecan chicken, and tiramisu. I loved that they have a separate vegetarian menu! Makes it easy for everyone to enjoy. Mr. Zahir came out a couple times to greet us and thank us for coming, which was sweet of him. He told us they even have a room with a projector that can closed off for private parties or meetings. We will definitely be returning! read more

My family and I decided to try a gourmet restaurant for my mom's birthday for the first time. We found Zahir's here on Yelp the day of, and was simply one of the BEST restaurants we have ever been to. Although there was an event in the hall of the restaurant, it did not stop Mr. Zahir, the waiters and staff from providing us the most exquisite experience. Everything from the fabric table napkins to the lemon waters, to the tasty warm bread and butter appetizer was intricate and meticulously prepared and served to us. The ambience is peaceful and classy with the dimmed lights and tone of the furniture. I ordered my first Filet Mignon and the flavors and texture of the meat simply melts in your mouth! The garlic fries are perfectly seasoned, and the vegetables are fresh and vibrant in flavor. The restaurant was quiet and extremely clean, and the staff were kind and welcoming to us--we were greeted and served as if we were regulars. My husband and I had dinner there tonight. I've been there years ago for a company function when they were at a different location. We started off with stuffed mushrooms. The cheese topping was so yummy! Then, Greek salad, which was just fine. For the main course, I had the Prime Rib and hubby had a New York Steak. The prime rib was really juicy and tender. I'm used to eating Japanese beef, and it almost reminded me of a good Kobe steak. The au jus was a bit on the salty side. My husband said the New York Steak was cooked just right and it went very well with the horseradish. I had Tiramisu for dessert. It was slightly frozen (thus 4 stars), but tasted good. We liked the fact that the prices are not as high as Alexander's. They had a personable service. Our overall experience was pretty good and we definitely will go there again. read more

We ordered the stuffed mushrooms (super yummy) and our main course was delicious. Zahir treated me to a complementary dessert of my choice to round out the evening. How thoughtful! My second visit was last Friday for Happy Hour. Do y'all know they have happy hour? If not - you should check it out. They have an amazing happy hour menu (sliders, chicken wings, cheese steak sandwiches, potato skins, etc) This is not your normal happy hour food. The potato skins = heaven. They were prime rib potato skins that melted in my mouth. The prices are less than the dinner menu and well worth it. This should be the new Milpitas hot-spot for happy hour on a sunny day because the outdoor seating area is super chill and was great place to relax after a long week at work. Don't be deceived by the business hours on yelp and their website (I think they are going to update them) The happy hour is from 4-6pm (It might even be until 6:30) you won't be disappointed! Yesterday we went for dinner at Zahir's Bistro. The place is spacious, has a nice ambience with ample parking. I would say it is a hidden gem if you want to really taste authentic Italian cuisine. We ordered veggie soup, house salad and pasta primavera with garden vegetables. All the items were served with complementary bread. The food was very delicious, presentation was awesome and the quantity was perfect. The service was top notch and the staff was very courteous. We ended the dinner with a dessert i.e Tiramisu which was again awesome. All the food items are reasonably priced as well. First time diner at Zahir's. I was skeptical at first coz hardly anybody was there. My kids ordered the prefixed menu. The food was amazing. We had their perfectly cooked prime rib (melts in your mouth), very tasty chicken Marsala and my favorite chicken & shrimp carbonara (to die for), raspberry slab cake (can't get enough of this) and the cheesecake brownies. A happy find via Yelp 7:15 on Tuesday while in this area. The property has a large car park and is well maintained with an outdoor patio that will be good in warm weather. They probably have excellent happy hours here. We were warmly greeted and seated immediately as the restaurant was very quiet. We had two very attentive and friendly people wait on us and made us feel comfortable. Service was excellent and read and menus were quickly provided. For appetizer we shared some bruschetta which which was very tasty. Our choice of wine (Dry Creek Zin) was out of stock but we were offered and accepted a good alternative (The Federalist). We had Chicken and Prawn a la Parga and also Cioppino. Both were excellent. Extremely tasty indeed. Portions were large so that we left with some for later. On leaving we met Zahir which was nice. He specifically asked whether we enjoyed our mean and certainly seems to care about his restaurant's reputation. I would not hesitate to visit Zahir's Bistro again. Great and fast service. Clam chowder had a nice consistency; wasn't too thick. Asked for my steak zahir medium rare and it came out nicely. The sautéed mushrooms and top were cooked well. The vegetables could've used a bit more seasoning, but they were cooked perfectly with the right amount of crunch. I always think it's weird when restaurants garnish plates with something that's not really edible. They could've just not had the rosemary leaf sticking out of the mashed potatoes, but the potatoes were nice and buttery. And the mango panna cotta was a nice refreshing dish to finish the meal. Overall had a great experience here. Initially had low expectations because it's a little hole in the wall in milpitas (not really any upscale restaurants here). But I'm happy there's a nice restaurant that me and the lady can treat ourselves out to every once in awhile now. read more

The menu items are specialized and static, not a pick you side type of place. The prices are a high, which is my only real knock on the place. Went with my GF and we wound up spending $130 (w/o tip) between the two of us...but we also had 5 drinks, two appetizers, two main courses and dessert. On a normal night, without alcohol, I'm guessing we'd have spent $80. As others have stated, it's a family ran restaurant and everyone is very friendly. Zahir found his way to our table a couple of times to make sure everything was going well, and we had a brief but engaging conversation with him on our way out. Very nice guy. While the wait staff was also friendly, there were several times they stopped by our table to see how things were going, but didn't remove any of the used dishes...or neglected an empty cocktail glass, instead of asking if we wanted another. We had the calamari and stuffed mushrooms for appetizers, and they were OK, nothing great. My GF had a steak and I had the new orleans chicken, both of which were fantastic. We also had a mango sherbet dessert which was incredible. Overall, we were definitely happy with our experience. Took my best friend here for her birthday recently. There are so few places to have a truly great meal in Milpitas. Zahir's is an oasis of fine dining in the dessert so to speak. The staff are always friendly and accommodating. They make each visit a personal experience. We both had steaks that were seasoned and cooked to perfection. The waiter selected a nice wine to lair with it. Everything came out of the kitchen hit and fresh. After the meal they brought out a dessert with a candle and they sang with us. My boyfriend decided to surprise me for our Valentine's Day date by taking me here. The place was really classy to the point that I regretted entering the restaurant with jeans on. The waitresses were super nice and accommodating. They really took special care of us and even made genuine interactions with us. I got the Crab Rigatoni, and it was REALLY good. The rigatoni was stuffed with crab meat, and crab meat was mixed in with the sauce as well. So it's perfect for crab lovers. The sauce was perfect. Tasty and not too over-bearing or thick. The noodles were perfect as well. The portions and quality were reasonably priced. For dessert we got the Triple Chocolate Cake. It was the best dessert I've ever eaten so far. "wow" doesn't accurately describe this gem. I cannot agree with the negative reviews posted here. The owner and his daughter were extremely friendly; the service was perfect (she even repeated the specials twice for us). I'm not a fan of fried calamari, but my son (his birthday) loved it. We had prime rib (perfectly cooked and seasoned!), the rack of lamb special (yummy!) and the New Orleans chicken (surprisingly tasty). All three of us were COMPLETELY satisfied with our meal. My sister's fave dessert is chocolate mousse, and she gave theirs a 10. Oh, and the decor was beautiful! I can understand problems that diners might have, but I saw no reason to not return here.
